Book Description
The fast and easy way to get up-to-speed on alternative energy
Because of current events, geopolitics, and natural disasters, the cost of fuel is front and center in our lives. This book provides a concise look at all forms of energy, including fossil fuels, electric, solar, biodiesel, nuclear, hydroelectric, wind, and renewable fuel cells. You will get explanations, definitions, and analysis of each alternative energy source from a technological point of view.
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction .......2007-01-20
This book provides a good overview of present and future alternative energy sources. It discusses the fundamentals from wood stoves to nuclear fusion. Note, this is an overview book, NOT a HOW-TO book. You aren't going to get blueprints on building a wind turbine but you will get a brief discussion of the technology and an overview of some very basic design criteria. The material is well laid out and very practical. Because it is something of a technical book, there are a few very simple (junior high level) algebraic equations throughout the text. Most anyone with an interest in the subject will find the book useful and an inexpensive introduction to the subject. The end of chapter quizzes help cement core concepts. The book's title lives up to its claim.

Easy way to Earth Sciences.......2004-12-12
Good introduction on the topic. The description of different soils is straight forward. The info on topography is detailed
and concised. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting
to brush up or learn more about Earth Sciences.
A Great Way to Explore Science .......2004-09-20
This is a great book for an adult to get reacquainted with science. The writing is first-rate and easy to understand. Science has changed a lot since I was in school and I feel a lot more current about the world in which I live and how it functions thanks to this book. This book is a must-have for anyone, young or old, who isn't an expert in science but values or has a need to know. Good writing, helpful sidebars, and I passed most of the tests! Nice work, Dr. Williams.

Wondering about weather? Learn Mother Nature's secrets
Meteorology Demystified presents a complete explanation of essential physical and scientific concepts before delving into a more detailed look at various weather phenomena.
Customer Reviews:
A Washout.......2007-06-14
The purpose of this book is to demystify weather. But while the book begins with a promising use of physical equations, these serve only to pad the book with test questions that are not further applied in the text to demystify (i.e., explain in causal terms) why things happen in the atmosphere. For example, there is no explanation of the Coriolis effect, and thus the wind patterns presented early on make no sense at all. There is a great deal of talk about what to do in the event of a thunderstorm, a hurricane, a tornado, and so on, but this information is readily available from any disaster center and elsewhere on the web. I came away from this book more mystified than when I opened it. A tempestuous disappointment.

Demystifying one of today's key global issues
This important guide addresses the causes of global warming and its effects on the Earth's climate in bestselling Demystified format. You will learn about the physical science behind climate change, including the chemical processes that upset the Earth's thermal balance. The book makes a distinction between what is known for certain, what many scientists now believe to be true, and what is informed speculation, subject to further interpretation. It then presents a wide range of solutions which can be pursued by individuals, as well as society as a whole.

Book Description
The first true introduction to semiconductor optoelectronic devices, this book provides an accessible, well-organized overview of optoelectric devices that emphasizes basic principles.
Coverage begins with an optional review of key concepts—such as properties of compound semiconductor, quantum mechanics, semiconductor statistics, carrier transport properties, optical processes, and junction theory—then progress gradually through more advanced topics. The Second Edition has been both updated and expanded to include the recent developments in the field.
Customer Reviews:
suitable for undergrad but too easy for grad student.......2005-11-03
If you are an undergraduate, this book is pretty good and it covers a lot of funamentals.
If you are a grad student, get Coldren's book - "diode lasers and photonic integrated circuits" or Chuang's "Physics of optoelectronic devices" though the theory there is hard for undergrad. Another good, easier book is "Principles and Applications of Optical Communications" by Max Ming-Kang Liu. The most recent book on the theory is "Physics of optoelectronics"-- very good book.
There are some errors in this book such as the rate eq for lasers. The real strength of this book is that it contains a lot of real structures, materials, and applications. Also, the semiconductor part is very complete. However, an updated version would be ideal.
Excellent.......2005-07-06
This is an excellent book on optoelectronics. I think it is suited for undergrad and grad students and practicing researchers as well. With reviews on semiconductor fundamentals, junction physics, bandstructure this book contains almost everything that you need to know on optoelectronics. With the in-depth analysis of the optoelectronic devices you can come back to review some of the basic staff that you need to know. I think it is a must buy for optoelectronics/photonics engineers. It is somewhat dated though and needs an updated edition.
Well, it isn't worth the money..........2004-03-02
i have pallab as my teacher, and of course he's using his book to teach from. I find the book hard to follow, poorly written, and illogically ordered. He needs to spend signifigant time working on the usability of the book. The one redeeming factor is that he is an excellent teacher so it somewhat makes up for the book being in such disarray.
Weak book.......2000-04-22
Unfortunately my professor used this book for the class. The book is not clear, almost nothing is demonstrated, the index is very short and incomplete, the exercises are not concize, it lacks a lot of theory, and many important devices such as the second harmonic generator are not covered in the book. If I could turn back in time I would never spent a cent on this book.
Excellent resource material.......2000-02-23
Beginning of book reviews key principles of quantum theory and necessary semiconductor processes to understand device applications. The text is comprehensive in specifying ways to quantify all aspects of optoelectronics and caters to the beginning student as well as the researching professional

Customer Reviews:
This is a Gem of a book!.......1997-11-16
Anyone finding themselves intemidated by the works of Tolstoy should start off with reading this book. These three short stories, "Where Love Is, There God Is Also", "The Three Hermits", and "What Men Live By", are some of the most powerful words I have seen put to paper. Those troubled by today's problems owes it to themselves to read this book and absorb the relevance that in fact is timeless. Even those finding a lack of belief in God will be moved and questioned their beliefs. Any of Tolstoy's works are a must read in everyone's lifetime, but these stories remain special to this reader.

I loved these stories.......1999-12-27
These are wonderful stories. I read this book a long time ago. Whenever I think of the story with the three hermits it brings a smile to my face. They are fiction stories with a moral. I highly recommend this book!
avdeitch did all the things god want him to do........1999-11-04
martin adveitch is a shoemaker, and he can't accept the the lost of his wife,so he broke up with god,at one time he met a peasant, convincing him to reaturn to god,he find out that what the peasant said was true, one day he heard a voice saying that god will see/visit him at the window so he wait a long time, that time he helps people that comes by(please excuse my shortcut,i really know the story)and after all those, one time in his basement he heard a whispering voice saying it is I. he saw figures of person whom he helped, then at that time it made him so happy and realize that god is the answer to our problems
