Catalogue of Unbalanced Chromosome Aberrations in Man
ASIN: 1402013035 |
Book Description
This book is not a panacea. However, it does provide, for the first time in one place, a comprehensive view of human chromosome heteromorphisms, their applications, and their often speculated roles in aberrant chromosome behaviour relating to abnormal phenotype, pregnancy loss and cancer. More significantly, the book is a pictorial atlas for common and unusual heteromorphisms and euchromatic variants as they have been studied both by classical banding techniques and by newer molecular or FISH technologies. To facilitate its use as a laboratory or clinical reference, plates in a pictorial section are organized by chromosome number with the most recent ISCN ideogram, summary and extensive list of references for each chromosome. A final pictorial section is devoted to FISH variants. The book is a work in progress, with submission of new variants encouraged for future editions

Turbulence: An Introduction for Scientists and Engineers

An Introduction to Fluid Dynamics
ASIN: 0262200198 |
Book Description
The subject of turbulence, the most forbidding in fluid dynamics, has usually proved treacherous to the beginner, caught in the whirls and eddies of its nonlinearities and statistical imponderables. This is the first book specifically designed to offer the student a smooth transitionary course between elementary fluid dynamics (which gives only last-minute attention to turbulence) and the professional literature on turbulent flow, where an advanced viewpoint is assumed.
Moreover, the text has been developed for students, engineers, and scientists with different technical backgrounds and interests. Almost all flows, natural and man-made, are turbulent. Thus the subject is the concern of geophysical and environmental scientists (in dealing with atmospheric jet streams, ocean currents, and the flow of rivers, for example), of astrophysicists (in studying the photospheres of the sun and stars or mapping gaseous nebulae), and of engineers (in calculating pipe flows, jets, or wakes). Many such examples are discussed in the book.
The approach taken avoids the difficulties of advanced mathematical development on the one side and the morass of experimental detail and empirical data on the other. As a result of following its midstream course, the text gives the student a physical understanding of the subject and deepens his intuitive insight into those problems that cannot now be rigorously solved.
In particular, dimensional analysis is used extensively in dealing with those problems whose exact solution is mathematically elusive. Dimensional reasoning, scale arguments, and similarity rules are introduced at the beginning and are applied throughout.
A discussion of Reynolds stress and the kinetic theory of gases provides the contrast needed to put mixing-length theory into proper perspective: the authors present a thorough comparison between the mixing-length models and dimensional analysis of shear flows. This is followed by an extensive treatment of vorticity dynamics, including vortex stretching and vorticity budgets.
Two chapters are devoted to boundary-free shear flows and well-bounded turbulent shear flows. The examples presented include wakes, jets, shear layers, thermal plumes, atmospheric boundary layers, pipe and channel flow, and boundary layers in pressure gradients.
The spatial structure of turbulent flow has been the subject of analysis in the book up to this point, at which a compact but thorough introduction to statistical methods is given. This prepares the reader to understand the stochastic and spectral structure of turbulence. The remainder of the book consists of applications of the statistical approach to the study of turbulent transport (including diffusion and mixing) and turbulent spectra.

A First Course in Turbulence.......2006-09-16
This book is a "classic" in the field of turbulence. However, I cannot recommend it to anyone who is not a collector. The content is not particularly useful to the fluids engineer who must deal with practical issues of turbulent flow. Nor is this book the best reference for a PhD student or research scientist who must dig into the details. A much better choice for any reader in fluid dynamics is the the book on Turbulent Flow by Pope.
Interesting.......2006-08-05
Although it was my first book about turbulence, It was very easy to read.
Excellent and refreshingly brief discussion of turbulence.......2001-11-22
This book ranks among the classics for people who actually work with turbulent flows. It is a brief but well composed discussion of many of the most fundamental concepts describing turbulence. It is approachable and accurate. It is slightly dated and does not provide as many modeling details as would be useful, but it is excellent as a conceptual discussion.
Excellent Introduction to Subject of Turbulence.......2001-10-31
This book is an excellent introduction to the subject of turbulence for any newcomer in the field. The book is focus on the true heart of turbulence with the emphasis on the physical insight. Justified by physical simplification, the scaling argument/similarity methods are basic tools to solve turbulence problem in the book. The solution from such methods give you the impression of the key physical mechanism behinds turbulent flows and hence the better understanding of the flows. Follow the way authors solve the problem closely, you will know how to do a hand combat with a real world turbulence problem.
The book requires only a knowledge of basic calculus as well as tensor notation. You only need a simple tensor operation. There is no requirement of statistical/stochastic tool knowledge. You can start this book right after you finish reading a advance fluid mechanics book e.g. Batchelor(1967), Panton(1996) and White(1991).
With my long experience in turbulence subject, I would say if I have to choose only one book for general purpose, I will defintely have "A First Course in Turbulence by Tennekes and Lumley". I have been reading the book more than 3--4 times but I find the book never ceases to give me a new insight of turbulence everytime I read.
Nonetheless, if you are looking for the bible of turbulence. I really mean the bible. You might consider having "Statistical Fluid Mechanics Vol 1 and 2 by Monin and Yaglom".
Introductory level textbook.......2000-09-04
A good basic textbook about turbulent fluid flows, recommended for undergraduate and early graduate students. Not a high-level reference (should look at Hinze's for that) and a few topics, ideas, etc. are somewhat outdated now.
Book Description
This dynamic book offers a clear insight into the field of fluid mechanics, taking an approach toward analyzing fluid flows that develops each subject from the theory of its basic laws to the illustration of actual engineering applications.
The Fourth Edition features the most up-to-date applications of essential concepts as well as new coverage of the latest topics in the field today.

OK.......2005-02-06
I used this book as supplementary material for review during a graduate course in marine hydrodynamics. I liked that it was compact and cheaper. But it's not really comprehensive enough for an introductory class.
Terrible Fluids Book.......2003-12-17
This book was used in my fluids class and was no help at all. The explanations are unclear and confusing, and there are very few examples. This book does not make a good class text or reference text. Do not buy this book. If you are an undergrad then buy Fluid Mechanics by Young et al. or Crowe et al., or if you want more buy Viscous Fluid Flow by White.
Save Your Money --- Don't Buy This.......2003-05-29
I bought a paperback version of this textbook a few years ago. There were many printing and typo errors (the top few lines on many pages were lost),and the quality of explanations in the textbook is disappointing for a group of authors from a supposedly distinguished university. Wanted to sell the book to recoup my loss but there was no market for it. Doesn't that speak volumes about this book?

Fluid mechanics for mathematicians.......1999-10-29
I would not recommend this book for any introductory fluid mechanics course because there are a lot of derivation steps as well as background information assumed by the author.
This is more of a mathematical approach to fluid mechanics as opposed to the more classical engineering approach.
Book Description
With rapid shifts between subject and tone, sometimes within single poems, Dean Young's latest book explores the kaleidoscopic welter of art and life. Here parody does not exclude the cri de coeur any more than seriousness excludes the joke. With surrealist volatility, these poems are the result of experiments that continue for the reader during each reading. Young moves from reworkings of creation myths, the index of the Norton Anthology of Poetry, pseudo reports and memos, collaged biographies, talking clouds, and worms, to memory, mourning, sexual playfulness, and deep sadness in the course of this turbulent book.

To not read Dean Young is a serious disease..........2003-07-31
To not read Dean Young is a serious disease, something like never tasting ice cream. The poems in First Course in Turbulence have helped me in my life and my own writing. If you are a lover, read Dean Young. If you are a poet, read Dean Young. If you are suffering from some vague, psychosomatic illness, read Dean Young. These poems will help you heal. These are poems to read aloud, preferably after a huge meal. Alternately, I suggest reading these poems in bed, with the man or woman you love, or perhaps on the beach, with a few friends and a few beers.
This book saved my life!.......2002-11-07
I read my first Dean Young poem on the Poetry Daily website, and fell in love with his wonderfully true yet strange voice. He weaves together timeless themes with current cultural references in a seamless way that will immediately have you thinking, "Yes, that's exactly the way it is." I covet his poems; they are on my refrigerator and my office bulletin board. They should be on billboards and in airports and perhaps even beamed up to the moon. Especially if you love the NY School of Poetry (Koch, Ashbery, Schuyler, and O'Hara), you will love Dean Young, too.

Dean Young -- LIVE.......2001-06-22
Anyone who likes Dean Young should seek out an opportunity to see him read. He is hysterical.
A great discovery.......2000-04-08
Reading Dean Young for the first time, I felt the way I felt upon discovering William Matthews or James Tate. Young is a major new poet, one who uses language and stream-of-consciousness in consistently interesting ways.

Book Description
This is the first book to describe a family of plasma techniques used to modify the surface and near-surface layer of solid materials.
Customer Reviews:
Review of Handbook of PIII and PII&D.......2002-05-07
This book is a very good in discussing Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation (PIII). It falls down somewhat when discussing Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation and Deposition (PIII&D). The chapters on plasma generation and plasma-surface interactions are very good. There are some interesting treatments on bombardment over complex surfaces. The chapters on Technology are quite good. A limitation of PIII is the rather shallow depth of material modification (~100nm), unless there is appreciable temperature to allow diffusion. The addition of concurrent film deposition to PIII (PIII&D), either from PVD or CVD sources, allows thicker layers to be built up. This also introduces nucleation, interface, film growth and gas incorporation effects to the process. In Chapter 3, "Ion Implantation and Thin-Film Deposition" the authors attempt to discuss these effects though they limit the discussion to the IBAD (Ion Beam Assisted Deposition) process and essentially ignore the large amount of work that has been done on plasma-based ion-assisted deposition (ion plating), particularly that using pulsed biasing, that would seem to be more akin to the PIII&D process. This is overcome somewhat in the discussion of applications since plasma-based ion-assisted deposition is much more widely used in industry than is IBAD. The Application section has a number of interesting examples of development work on PIII and PIII&D for application but few examples of actual use in industry though I am sure that they will follow. The book is unusual in that it cites a number of patents and even has a section on "Survey of PIII&D Intellectual Property."
My feeling is that some of the authors were not very well acquainted with the PVD literature. For example, they use the term "ion hammering" for film densification by ion bombardment whereas the PVD community has used the term "ion peening" for that effect for quite some time. Overall I highly recommend the book as one that points the way to new methods and applications for the vacuum coating industry.

Stunning Translation.......2004-07-28
This book was brought to my attention as a student of translation. I think that it is indeed a remarkable novel for a variety of reasons. Although a specialist on the history of this era might not be satisfied with the quantity of historical detail presented, I did not feel like the story itself was sacrificed for the purpose of allegory. The key aspects of the story were the act of presenting a story, in itself -- the language was sumptuous and the arabic translation was breathtaking. Descriptions were fabulously drawn. My impression of the novel was that it gently creates an allegory, while more importantly reiterating that people who live in an insular culture are always slow to change. I thought this book might be well received by Americans, who generally are not aware that the rest of the world does not move as quickly as they do, and who are not prepared to deal with too much character depth or historical detail.
not a historical novel!.......2004-05-15
I just finished this book for a class on modern arab lit that I absolutely loved. This book is meant as an alegorical statement of the experience of loss and defeat by "outsiders" so dominant in Arab consciousness, so it shouldn't really be read as a historical novel. But there is something disappointing about the lack of nuance in character development and depth in the story it tells (in fact, it reads a bit like an adolescent novel). It's too bad, because Ashour is a lyrical writer and the subject is a serious one. If you are looking for some serious fiction by women writers from the Arab world, I strongly recommend Huda Barakat and Sahar Khalifeh (Wild Thorns is a classic about why people in Palestine resort to violence even when they abhor it in principle).
Somewhat disappointing.......2004-04-06
This book was a pleasure to read at first thanks to Ashur's wonderful descriptions of everyday things and her ability to bring the scene alive. But as the story develops, I couldn't help but feel that the author was stereotyping her characters to make an all too predictable ideological point, and that was disappointing. The female heroine seems to have no flaws, a feminist twist, but at the expense of any sense of complexity in the story. There is also an akward sense of insularity to the novel. "Christians" do not enter the story at all except as villains and inquisitors, a one dimensional world that seems to have much in common with the demonized view of Arabs so prevalent in the US, only turned on its head. Too bad, because Ashur is clearly an accomplished writer. Her agenda simply dominates the story, producing an overly simplistic account of the human tragedy she seeks to describe.

Book Description
Secretly sure she is worthless to all but her cat, Eva falls into the hands of a man defined by his terrible scars. Now that her powerful family is destroyed, this pock-marked Moor's choices - once the subject of a childish fairy-tale - become personal: can the curse of rejection be broken, or will ambition win his soul? The response of ordinary people to the cruelties of a harsh time and the moral challenges of slavery and the Spanish Inquisition drive this heart-warming tale of beautiful, strife-torn sixteenth-century Granada. Animal characters are a constant in all M.L.E's fiction. Experiences with 'creature therapy' gained from years of sharing the family home with abused women and their children has shown that interaction between species, limited in the industrialized world, is a part of learning to be human. Fortunately for us, regardless of the century or the setting, a cat is always a cat.

A window in time.......2007-04-18
This is a great book with a gripping plot set in (a very well researched)renaissance era Granada after the spanish conquest. The author makes excelent use of the city's uneasy atmosphere and social and religous tension to pull you into her story and make you belive.
Captivating from the start.......2007-02-17
This book hooked me from the very first pages. I loved the character development, the plot twists, and the way the author weaves the story with historical facts. An added bonus is the author's quirky sense of humor, as well as her use of animal characters as important story elements. I am ordinarily a fast reader, but this book wouldn't allow me to read it quickly, which I loved! I found myself believing in the characters and their problems. I couldn't wait to start the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of historical fiction. You won't be disappointed.

Book Description
In 1841, Ferdinand and Isabella began the final attempt to wipe out the Moslem kingdom of Granada in southern Spain. After eleven years of fierce fighting they finally completed the Reconquista and forged a united Spain. Granada: The Fall of Moslem Spain is an exciting game for two players, placing them in the roles of the kings of Granada or Spain's dual monarchs. The object of the game for the Spanish player is to conquer the Moorish kingdom, while the Moorish player seeks to prevent this. Each player has knights, cavalry, and foot soldiers with which to carry out these tasks. In battle, both players place their units on a combat display and roll dice to determine how many hits are achieved.
