          Book Description

This book contains 26 contributions dealing with the biology of aquatic oligochaetes and covers a wide range of topics including taxonomy, morphology, ultrastructure, embryology, reproduction, feeding biology, ecotoxicity, community studies, and species distribution. Descriptions of new taxa in tropical areas, including Amazonian forest soils, as well as overviews on the biodiversity of aquatic oligochaetes in Australia and European groundwaters, are presented. New morphological characteristics in both marine and freshwater species are described and interpreted. Laboratory studies contribute to the knowledge of oligochaete feeding biology and reproduction. The use of aquatic oligochaetes in ecological risk assessment is analysed in detail, and standardised experimental designs for studies on bioaccumulation and pollutant transfer by food are included. Finally, a number of papers present the effects of oliogochaetes on the performance of an activated sludge plant, and multivariate approaches to the spatial and/or temporal distribution and composition of oligochaete communities in many different areas of the world, from the scale of a river to the scale of the microhabitat. The broad scope of this volume is a reflection of recent rends, not only in oligochaete research, but also in general applied biological studies.

                        Book Description

Spectral Theory of Guided Waves represents a distillation of the authors' (and others) efforts over several years to rigorously discuss many of the properties of guided waves. The bulk of the book deals with the properties of eigenwaves of regular waveguiding systems and relates these to a variety of physical situations and applications to illustrate their generality. The book also includes considerable discussion of the basic properties of normal waves with quadratic operator pencils. Unique in its coverage of these subjects, the book will be of interest to engineers, applied mathematicians, and physicists with a working knowledge of functional analysis and spectral theory.

5 out of 5 stars great travel adventures in 15th century feudal france.......2001-01-02

One of the later Waverley novels, "Quentin Durward" is nothing short of great. I love it. It's full of adventure, couleur locale, action (Scott's romances seem to get more bloody as the series progressed--this one was published nine years after the first), and colorful characters.

I think this is one of the most engaging of all the Waverleys. The plot is not overburdening, and the romantic interest of the main character is even more impossible than in most of the others. Scott made the jump from Scotland (and later England) to the continent very successfully: I highly recommend this book.

Note: this review refers to the OUP edition, which is cheap and very well done--and hopefully available.

Sir Walter Scott's novel QUENTIN DURWARD, written in 1823, made his reputation in France. Nobody had ever written historical fiction about that country as Scott did. It would not be long before the Dumases Father and Son would go and do likewise in their novels.

The year is 1468, but events that take place years later, such as the killing of the Prince Bishop of Liege, are also compressed into that year. The nominal hero of the book is 20 year old Quentin Durward, a poor Scotsman of noble birth, forced to seek his fortune outside Britain after his family was slaughtered by rival Highlanders. He falls in love with the beautiful, vastly wealthy Countess Isabelle, age 16. She is an orphan and liege of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, the richest ruler in Europe, who yearns to be an independent King and no longer feudal subject to King Louis XI of France. Isabelle and a ditzy aunt have fled to Louis for protection. He sends them on to their relative the Bishop of Liege, in the charge of the latest addition to his Scottish Archers/Bodyguard, Quentin Durward, whose uncle is a veteran in that same unit.

King Louis, to make trouble for Duke Charles, stirs up rebellion in Liege and other Flemish possessions of the latter and schemes to have the Countess Isabelle kidnapped and married en route by William de la Marck, a dissolute nobleman nicknamed The Wild Boar of Ardennes. Quentin overhears his assigned Gypsy guide to Liege negotiating the ambush with a follower of the Boar, takes a different route and saves Isabelle. Stupidly, however, Louis XI, probably the cleverest King France ever had, places himself in the hands of Duke Charles and, to save his life or at least prevent abdication and retirement to a monastery, agrees to serve under Charles in putting down a rebellion in Liege. The Wild Boar of Ardennes had provided the muscle and led the rich burghers to rebel against their bishop whom he slew, despite the bishop's earlier personal kindnesses.

In a burst of chivalry, King Louis compromises the fate of the disobedient Countess Isabelle. Rather than marry a nominee of her feudal lord Duke Charles, Isabelle's hand and/or property (if she refuses to marry, she becomes an Ursuline nun), will go to whatever knight or lord kills William de la Marck during the planned storming of Liege. Although Quentin Durward engages and greatly weakens the Wild Boar in single combat, his guardsman uncle actually takes home the bacon, as it were. But uncle bestows the Countess on his nephew instead and they wed and have many beautiful sons and daughters.

The real hero of this novel is Duke Charles of Burgundy, a kind of hot-tempered Achilles. We see him at the height of his powers, when he has King Louis XI totally in his control, though the cunning King manages to slip out of his grasp. Less than ten years later in ANNE OF GEIERSTEIN, Walter Scott shows the hotheaded Charles the Bold humbled and killed by unlikely Swiss mountaineers after several pitched battles.

These two novels depict the decline during the late 15th Century of the Age of Chivalry in Europe, two or three generations before the Reformation. People at that time pored over products of newly invented printing presses using another new invention, reading glasses, which they may also needed for a new fangled game, playing cards. At the same time Louis XI believes strongly in horoscopes and the ability of quacks to read palms and forecast the future. Walter Scott brings a dazzling age back to life as it declines to its end.

                          Book Description

1905. Sir Walter Scott was a master of diverse talents. He was a man of letters, a dedicated historian and historiographer, a well-read translator of foreign texts, and a talented poet. Deriving most of his material from his native Scotland, its history and its legends, Scott invented and mastered what we know today as the historical novel. Quentin Durward is Scott's first European novel. The central character is a young adventurer and soldier of the Scottish guards seeking fame and fortune in the France of Louis XI. It was troublesome at first, said Durward, "but became more easy by use; and I was weak with my wounds and loss of blood, and desirous to gratify my preserver, Father Peter, and so I was the more easily kept to my task. But after several months' languishing, my good kind mother died, and as my health was now fully restored, I communicated to my benefactor, who was also Sub-Prior of the Convent, my reluctance to take the vows; and it was agreed between us, since my vocation lay not to the cloister, that I should be sent out into the world to seek my fortune, and that, to save the Sub-Prior from the anger of the Ogilvies, my departure should have the appearance of flight.

4 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic for Generations.......2007-04-12

When I was 13, I asked my father what his favorite book was when he was my age. He told me "Quentin Durward". The next time we were in a bookstore together, I found a paperback copy of this book and bought it...for 75 cents! When I read this book, I entered the medieval world of knights, kings, lovely medieval ladies, and chivalry. I later learned that Quentin Durward is about fighting to preserve moral order in a changing world. What book could be more relevant today? I just bought this book for my 13 year old son, and he has it on his list of books to read this summer. The generations in my family will be connected by this book and the themes it addresses.

p.s. When going through my father's library, I discovered the old copy my father had read. It had his father's name written on the first page, and his grandmother's name on a bookplate inside the front cover!

                          4 out of 5 stars Somewhat Borgesian.......2005-11-22

This is the first Sir Walter Scott novel I've read since 1975. I was struck by how modern -- or even post-modern -- its structure is. For one thing, the novel is a narrated by fictitious narrator named Sir Walter Scott, honest, who stumbles into a private library salvaged from pre-revolutionary France; for another, its annotations reference sources which may or may not exist, but which the fictitious narrator claims he read in the private library referenced above. Further, with the exception of the heroine (dish-water dull, I agree), the characters all behave as modern people would. Yet, as far as I can tell, Borges never wrote about Sir Walter Scott. Go figure.

                          5 out of 5 stars One of Scott's finest.......2002-12-14

I read this novel forty years ago in the Modern Library edition and I am amazed that it is out of print except in expensive library editions. It is one of Scott's finest novels, full of action and with a fine portrait of King Louis. It was the first novel to use a gypsy as a character. It was made into a movie in the 1950's. Scott of one of the most neglected geniuses in literature and the world is the poorer for it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent historical fiction with rich characterization.......1998-01-25

Quentin Durward is good reading, right up (almost) to the very end. It's excellent historical fiction with very rich characterization, especially of Louis XI. Excellent, that is, except for the women. While two of the minor female characters are interesting, the female lead is as dull as dishwater. My real complaint is that the ending is bungled. After the tremendous buildup full of exciting action and convincing sets, you turn the page and...it's just over! Misses the crecendo and the denoument. Still, I enjoyed it, and recommend checking it out of the library, as I did.
