Book Description
A successor to A Geologic Time Scale 1989 (Cambridge, 1990), this volume introduces the theory and methodology behind the construction of the new time scale, before presenting the scale itself in extensive detail. An international team of over forty stratigraphic experts develops the most up-to-date international stratigraphic framework for the Precambrian and Phanerozoic eras. A large wallchart summarizing the time scale at the back of the book completes this invaluable reference for researchers and students.
Download Description
An international team of over forty stratigraphic experts have helped to build the most up to date international stratigraphic framework for the Precambrian and Phanerozoic. This successor to A Geologic Time Scale 1989 by W. Brian Harland et al. (CUP 0521 387655) begins with an introduction to the theory and methodology behind the construction of the new time scale. The main part of the book is devoted to the scale itself, systematically presenting the standard subdivisions at all levels using a variety of correlation markers. Extensive use is made of isotope geochronology, geomathematics and orbital tuning to produce a standard geologic scale of unprecedented detail and accuracy with a full error analysis. A wallchart summarising the whole time scale, with paleogeographic reconstructions throughout the Phanerozoic, is included in the back of the book. The time scale will be an invaluable reference source for academic and professional researchers and students.

Curiously Defected.......2006-08-02
This is titled as '2004', and published in 2005: Then we expect explanation of the Ediacaran Period just proposed to IUGC and ratified in Spring 2004. Nevertheless there is no chapter for this new and curious Period, and more surprisingly, no discussion is made on Cambrian-Ediacaran boundary which should have been a grave subject for International Commission of Stratigraphy (This book is formally written by members of the Commission). A truly disappointing feature for the 'latest' book.

Seminal work.......2003-08-08
A thorough survey of state-of-the-art components ca 2000. The quality of the writing varies from article to article, but is on the whole excellent.
splendid optics.......2003-05-23
I really enjoy reading this book. It is very high quality book. It tries to cover all the aspects for the optical components for the fiber communication. The different chapters are covered by real experts in their own field. Many chapter author are actual pioneers for the field they covered. I like this point very much.
reading this book, I feel go through the history of optical component. There are so many ideas developed in the past and there are so many progresses made in the past ten years. It is such a splendid and brilliant optics. Given the optic industry is in very bad shape now, I would say this book really show the spirit of optics.
This book also cover many newer area, such as gain clamped amplifier, not only for EDFA, such as very high speed receiver, not only common detectors.

Not bad, but not great either.......2007-08-16
As a high school teacher, I am always looking for interesting "coming of age" stories that my students might connect with. It was apparent within the first 40 pages or so that my students probably wouldn't like it, but I wanted to finish it for myself. I really enjoy Latin American literature. This is not quite as good as that, but I do enjoy Mexican-American culture and language, so I did like those elements of the story, particularly Antonio's struggles with religion and identity. Having been raised in a Catholic family, I understood a lot of the rites of passage being described, and was somewhat envious of the little boy's devotion; I myself never felt that religion played a large part in my life. I didn't see receiving communion or first confession as a life-altering experience. In the end, neither did Antonio, but the belief he had in something greater than himself was real and unconquerable. In the end, though Antonio was unable to completely reconcile his conflicted faiths, he was at least able to acknowledge that life is not as simple as we as kids would like to think. Understanding is a life-long pursuit, not something you wake up with one day. While this can be terrifying, it can also be beautiful. This, I believe, is the message of the novel. Not a bad idea...
Meh...not as bad as I expected, not as good as I hoped........2007-08-08
I was required to read this book for my English class and was honestly expeecting to hate it. It turned out that it wasn't awful, but wasn't great. It seemed to drag in parts and some of the descriptions bothered me, but the big problems I had with it were:
1) Religious overkill. I understand the religion was a central part of Tony's life, but there was a little too much of it for my tastes. A little editing out of it might have made me cringe a little less.
2) Tony's classmates. These 6/7/8 year old kids are constantly fighting, wrestling, and cursing. I'm all for a little blood and bad language, but seriously. I have a hard time believing kids this age act like that all the time. I did NOT like that at all. I really just wanted to give them all a good smack.
3) Was he really 6? Tony is supposed to be 6 when this book starts, but you would never guess it. He is WAY too contemplative and willing to please for a 6 year old. This kid is constantly questioning religion and society and is worrying about whether can please both of his parents and whether or not he'll be a priest or a farmer.
3.5) Nobody is that perfect. It seemed to me that Tony had no real flaws. Yes, he witnessed a lot of evil and wrong doing, but other than that the kid is an angel. Do you know anyone who is a perfect student, always kind and willing to put others before themselves, contemplative and concerned with the world around them, and always wants to please their parents? Do you know anyone like this who is 6?
Bottom line: Don't bother with unless you're really a fan of this type of writing.
Review of BLESS ME, ULTIMA.......2007-07-20
This is a book about good versus evil, witchcraft and spells. Mostly it is about a boy's self-discovery and internal struggles regarding Christianity and the gods of the land, river and wind. It was written in 1972 and considered a classic in Chicano literature. It is on many high school reading lists. It is a very easy read with few characters and can be read in a short amount of time. With that said, there are cliffnotes available to assist with the symbolism and the deeper meaning of the book. The stuff written between the lines.
Personally and unfortunately I failed to connect with this book. I hate giving a poor review of this book considering the author is so very much respected. I am not saying it was bad, but it was not my type of book. The action, what there was of it, was spread out among long stretches of Antonio's (the main character, a six year old boy)self discovery and internal struggles. The few parts in the book that I thought may be meant to be humorous I perceived as annoying. The ending, I will admit, was fairly exciting and gave more meaning to the book. Still, considering and comparing this to all the books I have read, I must give it two stars, although I am sure many of you who have read the book will disagree.
Like I stated earlier, this book is about self-discovery and the real meaning goes beyond the written word. If you enjoy those types of books then perhaps you may enjoy this. If you are a student that is required to read this book, take my advice and purchase the cliffnotes so perhaps you can get more out of the book than I did. Make the best of it and try to enjoy it. Other than that my feeling is that there are way too many better books out there and not enough time to read them. I would skip this one if given the choice again. I hope this review helps!
magical.......2007-04-10
As a Hispanic, I cannot believe that I hadn't read *Bless Me, Ultima* earlier. Once I started reading this book, I could not put it down. Anaya is a superb storyteller.
As it is in the Hispanic culture, elders are supposed to be taken care of whether or not they are family. So, in comes Ultima, an elderly curandera. A curandera is a faith healer, not a witch. However, some people may not see the difference between the two. The proper and respectful term to Ultima is Grande, meaning "wise one".
Antonio is the youngest boy in this particular family who has taken in Ultima. He is fascinated with everything related to Ultima. When he greets her for the first time, he calls her Ultima. He is scolded by his mother but Ultima intercepts. He's the only one who calls her Ultima throughout the book.
Ultima seems to have taken a fascination with Antonio. She selects him to accompany her to collect herbs and whatnots for her "practices". Also, when some people are curses with spells by the witches, Ultima takes Antonio with her to help break spells.
There are many things happening in this book. One thing that happened was that one of Antonio's uncles was afflicted with a spell that nearly cost him his life. When Ultima and Antonio break a spell, a local man and his 3 witch daughters vow revenge. One by one, Ultima encounters and breaks a spell, increasing Antonio's respect and curiosity of Ultima's powers. When a spell is broken, something terrible happens to the witch daughters, which increases their father's hatred for Ultima.
You just have to read the book. There is a lot of symbolisms in the book. The symbols are not subtle. You'll be reading but pondering over the symbols in your mind. Overall, Anaya tells this story wonderfully. There is no boring or slow parts in this book. Something is always happening which keeps you alert.
Insightful.......2006-09-02
A good read that reveals the aspects of Mexican-American Catholic culture in the 1940's.

Bless Me Ultima.......2000-03-28
This is one of the very best books I have ever read! When I was first assigned to read it for English I thought it was going to be very dull and boring, but I was proved wrong! When I started the book I was so taken up in Tony's world that I could not put the book down! The diction and Anaya's flowing use of words was absolutely amazing! He has become one of my favorite authors! Bless Me Ultima is such a wonderful book that I would reccomend it to anyone who enjoys reading!

Not consistent.......2001-10-17
I purchased this book to help me plan a unit for teaching Bless Me, Ultima to a class of 10th graders. It offers some wonderful suggestions for intro activities and ways for students to work through the book. For example, the author recommends using 4x6 note cards to summarize chapters and he outlines a unit portfolio for students to turn in at the end of the novel. However, the quizzes and tests aren't very good. The quizzes for chapters 1-8, for instance, have questions that require knowledge of chapters 9-12! The glossary at the back is helpful, but the information and glossary in the Cliff's Notes is far more useful as a teaching guide
AP teachers beware.......2001-06-01
Though I applaud an attempt at writing a study guide for this marvelous novel, I was very disappointed with the level of this guide. I had hoped it would be targeted at an AP or college-level audience, but clearly it is more appropriate for middle school readers. The questions provided are surface-level at best and the essay questions are not very probing.
One bright spot was the addition of a "translation" guide at the back of the book for the non-Spanish speakers.
Overall, I cannot recommend this book to any educator who teaches above 10th grade.

This fascinating and mystical novel follows the sociopsychological maturation of a Chicano boy in New Mexico in the 1940s. A story pitting good against evil, Catholic beliefs against the "old ways," and education against the gift of intuition, it ends with acceptance and new life challenges.

Bless me Ultima.......2005-05-27
This book was the most boring, dryest, and stupid book of all time. In fact the reason I didn't burned it was because my 10th grade english teacher Ms.Gomez suggested that i needed it to pass her class. As well as it not being my book.To all new readers i strongly suggest not buying this book, however, if your into reading books that in the end turn out to be a total waste of time and oxygen used to finish reading the book. Actually to be quite frank about this book it truly was work of endless stupidty by the insane Rudolfo Anaya. Thank you for your time.
The carp, the goddess, who's "she", la Grande..........2004-11-30
Recently, I've had the chance to read this novel through an english class which has brought out many new perspectives within the novel. This novel shows the importance of family and the balance and equality between life. The conflict with the Marez and Luna can be referred to a "Romeo/Juliet" Shakespearian drama. One of the good aspects of the book that I found was interesting engough was the mockingbirds that kept on appearing within and between the lines of the text. Well, that's all folks. Also, to help you with the understanding of the text would be to discuss and ask questions with fellow classmates or family members. *sparknotes.com may help too.... (^_^)
Absolutly Great Book.......2003-07-12
Bless Me Ultima was a wonderful book. I loved the fact that the author possesed so much talent to put such a vivid picture in my mind. There never was a dull or boring moment in the book. I was captured by the tale of a young boy from New Mexico. I absolutly adore this book it was well worth reading.

Very boring........1999-11-02
In my ninth grade English class we have read this book. No one in the class enjoyed it. The dreams that Antonio has are strange and the writing is very bland, not to mention confusing before class discussion. I could not help being bored during this book. I would dread picking it up and reading for homework. I did not enjoy this book at all, Im sure many others will agree. It is not what I call a "masterpiece" thank you.

MYSTICAL, HUMOUROUS, AND EXCELLENT!.......1999-05-23
ANAYA MYSTIFIES THE READER WITH HIS TALENT, AND KEEPS HIM ENTERTAINED AS WELL. I RECOMMEND ANYONE THAT HAS A LIBRARY TO HAVE THIS BOOK IN THEIR COLLECTION BECAUSE IT IS A CLASSIC. THIS TEXT IS BY FAR ONE OF THE BEST CHICANO WRITINGS OF ALL TIMES BECAUSE IT TELLS OF HOW CURANDERISMO AND RELIGION ARE INTERTWINED INTO ONE UNDERSTANDING. IT GIVES THE CHICANO READER ADDED KNOWLEDGE IN UNDERSTANDING THE BELIEFS OF OUR PARENTS OR GRANDPARENTS THAT HAVE BEEN LOST OVER THE YEARS OF ASSIMILATION.
