    Book Description

Conceptually unsavoury, airway mucus is vital to homeostasis in the respiratory tract. In contrast, when abnormal, mucus contributes significantly to the pathophysiology of a number of severe bronchial diseases, including asthma, chronic bronchitis and cystic fibrosis. This volume provides wide ranging and in-depth coverage of the scientific and clinical aspects of airway mucus. It commences with introductory chapters which address the biochemical and molecular biological basis of airway mucus and continues with comprehensive coverage of the various physiological and rheological aspects of respiratory secretions. The clinical aspects of the topic are then considered, with chapters discussing the involvement of mucus secretions in bacterial infection and in hypersecretory diseases of the airway. The volume concludes with a discussion of the therapeutic aspects of the topic, both in terms of the possible approaches to the treatment of mucus hypersecretion and the interaction of these drugs with airway mucus. Written by leading experts in the field, each contribution provides a comprehensive review of its particular subject. Reflecting the latest advances in this important area of respiratory research, this volume will be of great interest to scientists and clinicians working in the field of airway secretions and related areas.

    Book Description

Building on the success of its 1993 predecessor, this 2nd edition of Geochemistry, Groundwater and Pollution has been thoroughly re-written, updated and extended into a complete and authoritative account of modern hydrogeochemistry. Offering a quantitative approach to the study of groundwater quality and the interaction of water, minerals, gases, pollutants and microbes, this book shows how physical and chemical theory can be applied to explain observed water qualities and variations over space and time. Integral to the presentation, geochemical modeling using PHREEQC code is demonstrated, with step-by-step instructions for calculating and simulating field and laboratory data. Numerous figures and tables illustrate the theory, while worked examples including calculations and theoretical explanations aid the reader in gaining a deeper understanding of the concepts involved. This book is intended for students in hydrogeology, geochemistry and civil engineering, while professionals in the water sciences will find inspiration in the practical examples and modeling templates.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must have for hydrogeologists!.......2007-02-18

This is a great book for students and professionals alike. Starts with the very basics of water chemistry and covers almost everything that one could think of. What sets this book apart from other chemical hydrogeology books is the extensive integration of PHREQC and the many links to free useful applications and graphing tools. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Important Reference, and a Good Read.......2007-01-24

The second edition of Appelo's textbook / reference volume is among the best written and enjoyable books available on groundwater. The figures are original, clear, and appropriate, and the text follows an intellectually solid, but very readable format. Definitely a requisite book for the student and professional.

The latest edition of the bestselling Groundwater Chemicals Desk Reference contains double the amount of data found in the original edition. Hundreds of chemicals and chemical compounds are easily located in this latest edition. New material is included on environmental fates, particularly on transformation products, and several new tables have been added. Four new appendices are included, providing access to conversion factors, bulk density values of soils and rocks, porosity values of rocks and sediments, and solubility values of various organic compounds not profiled in the text.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Reference Text.......2001-11-07

This is a great text full of useful information on over 400 chemicals. The text offers information on melting point, density, Henry's law constant, soil sorption coefficient, octanol/water partition coefficient, solubility in organics and water, vapor density and pressure. The text includes a section on each chemical discussing environmental fate, toxicity, drinking water standard and use of each chemical. I've found this book very helpful over the last 10 years.

The topic of the symposium is the development of electron beam ion sources and traps and their applications, so far in basic science and research, but with prospects for extending them into other areas. Potential readers would have an interest in atomic physics and applications to accelerator physics.

                  Book Description

This book provides an introduction to advanced manufacturing processes using new energy sources, with an emphasis on the energy-beam processing of materials. The advantage of this technique is related to several factors: alternative machining equipment may be unavailable, especially for
brittle substances; they offer very high precision; they may be the only way to achieve certain effects, for example the doping of semiconductors with ion-beams. The authors review the fundamental energy considerations for any energy-beam technique, then examine the techniques and their
                  applications individually.

                        Book Description

The Handbook of Ion Sources delivers the data needed for daily work with ion sources. It also gives information for the selection of a suitable ion source and ion production method for a specific application. The Handbook concentrates on practical aspects and introduces the principle function of ion sources. The basic plasma parameters are defined and discussed. The working principles of various ion sources are explained, and examples of each type of ion source are presented with their operational data. Tables of ion current for various elements and charge states summarize the performance of different ion sources. The problems related to the production of ions of non-gaseous elements are detailed, and data on useful materials for evaporation and ion source construction are summarized. Additional chapters are dedicated to extraction and beam formation, ion beam diagnosis, ion source electronics, and computer codes for extraction, acceleration, and beam transport. Emittance and brilliance are described and space charge effects and neutralization discussed. Various methods for the measurement of current, profile, emittance, and time structure are presented and compared. Intensity limits for these methods are provided for different ion energies. Typical problems related to the operation of ion source plasmas are discussed and practical examples of circuits are given. The influence of high voltage on ion source electronics and possibilities for circuit protection are covered. The generation of microwaves and various microwave equipment are described and special problems related to microwave operation are summarized. Book Description

The emphasis on practical experience over ideology is viewed by many historians as a profoundly American characteristic, one that provides a model for exploring the colonial challenge to European belief systems and the creation of a unique culture. Here Jim Egan offers an unprecedented look at how early modern American writers helped make this notion of experience so powerful that we now take it as a given rather than as the product of hard-fought rhetorical battles waged over ways of imagining one's relationship to a larger social community. In order to show how our modern notion of experience emerges from a historical change that experience itself could not have brought about, he turns to works by seventeenth-century writers in New England and reveals the ways in which they authorized experience, ultimately producing a rhetoric distinctive to the colonies and supportive of colonialism.

Writers such as John Smith, William Wood, John Winthrop, Anne Bradstreet, Benjamin Tompson, and William Hubbard were sensitive to the challenge experiential authority posed to established social hierarchies. Egan argues that they used experience to authorize a supplementary status system that would at once enhance England's economic, political, and spiritual status and provide a new basis for regulating English and native populations. These writers were assuaging fears over how exposure to alien environments threatened actual English bodies and also the imaginary body that authorized English monarchy and allowed English subjects to think of themselves as a nation. By reimagining the English nation, these supporters of English colonialism helped create a modern way of imagining national identity and individual subject formation.

From the author: Art galleries use special media formats to authorize what they display. The Art Gallery of Ontario's 1996 Art for a Nation exhibition exemplifies the use of print-based, modern means of authorization. It presented the Group of Seven as famous artists, constructed an historical narrative of their development and provided expert opinion on their work. The Gallery's accompanying Oh! Canada Workshop used multimedia, postmodern means of authorization. It distributed exhibits randomly without an historical narrative, and allowed visitors to create their own art and to be art critics. A survey of visitors and observations of their activities revealed an overwhelming preference for the Art for a Nation exhibition. Visitors wanted the authoritative media formats that art galleries have traditionally offered, rather than an unauthoritative, multimedia environment that parallels what they experience in everyday life. For them, the museum should remain a place where one can be deferential to authority and anti-popular.
