Book Description
This book is designed to provide students in a first or second GIS course with a solid foundation in both GIS concepts and the use of GIS. The book retains the same comprehensive coverage of GIS topics as featured in the first edition. This edition is organized into five parts. Part 1 (Chapters 1 to 7) explains the fundamentals of GIS including coordinate systems, data models, data input, spatial data editing, and attribute data management. Part 2 (Chapters 8 and 9) includes data display and data exploration. Part 3 (Chapters 10 and 11) examines the basic tools for GIS analysis and their applications. Part 4 (Chapters 12 and 13) covers terrain mapping and analysis, and spatial interpolation. Part 5 (Chapters 14 to 16) deals with GIS models and modeling, regions, and network and dynamic segmentation.
This book stresses both concepts and practices. GIS concepts from fields such as geography, cartography, spatial analysis, and database management explain the purpose and objectives of GIS operations and the interrelationship among GIS operations. For example, a basic understanding of map projection explains why we must project map layers to be used together with a common coordinate system and why we need to input numerous projection parameters. Each chapter in this book is divided into two main sections. The first section covers topics and concepts addressed in the chapter. The second section covers applications, usually with three to five problem-solving tasks.

Book Description
The Broadview Anthology of Victorian Poetry and Poetic Theory, Concise Edition is less than half the length of the full anthology, but preserves the main principles of the larger work. A number of longer poems (such as Tennyson's In Memoriam) are included in their entirety; there are generous selections from the work of all major poets, and a representative selection of other work; the work of Victorian women poets features very prominently; and a substantial selection of poetic theory is included to round out the volume.
Customer Reviews:
Thoughtful, innovative anthology.......2000-06-15
It's raining Victorian poetry anthologies--*heavy* Victorian poetry anthologies. Collins and Rundle have produced an intriguing textbook that combines selections from both famous and lesser-known figures with Victorian writings on poetic theory. The selections are well-chosen, including good chunks of *The Ring and the Book* and *Aurora Leigh* along with all of *Modern Love* and *The City of Dreadful Night.* (It is particularly nice to see the latter.) Women are nicely represented by poems from Augusta Webster, Amy Levy, Michael Field, and the Bronte sisters, among many others. Teachers thus have the flexibility to construct anything from a traditional course, focusing on the major authors like Tennyson, Arnold, and the Brownings, to a course on women, later poets (the 1880s and 90s are well-represented), and so forth. Moreover, the double-columned text is set in a readable font (a feature not to be underestimated!). The anthology's primary failing, however, lies in its virtually non-existent annotation; what *is* there is often spectacularly unhelpful. Headnotes could also have been fuller. Overall, however, this is a notable achievement.

Family of Poems, A
ASIN: 1563053136 |
Book Description
To be read aloud before bed or during a quiet moment, this book introduces a literature of delight to the whole family. In the Victorian era, the best poets and literary minds created a special world for children. Today these poems, with their rollicking energy and old-fashioned values, are still brimming with charm, whimsy, and truth.
Here are offerings from Amy Lowell, Edward Lear, James Whitcomb Riley, Lewis Carroll, Emily Dickinson, and Robert Louis Stevenson combined with treasures hidden for a century or more in scrapbooks, anthologies, and dusty copies of The Youth's Companion and St. Nicholas Magazine. Poems on the virtues of home and family, the seasons, animals, patriotism-and silly poems that mean nothing at all.
Charming full-color pictures of the period decorate each page, and for parents and older readers, there is marginalia on the poem or poet.
30,000 copies in print.

Victorian era for sure.......2007-05-14
This is just what I was looking for. Beautifully illustrated and sweet old fashioned thoughts to share with children. Be careful not to share the sexist ideas in some of them, with the children. We don't want to loose any ground that we have made since the Victorian times. For the most part, just good messages. It's not a book about today....but a look back in time.
Victorian Treasure Trove.......2001-11-29
If you love Victorian illustration you will be in heaven with this terrific book. It is a treasury of over 100 Victorian era verses set up in sections about Childhood Years, Sprites and Goblins, Rules for Growing Up, Absurdities, and the World of Nature. The illustrations are full color and just as charming as you could possibly wish. The quality of the paper, printing, cover, and dustjacket are all top-notch. There are interesting margin notations that give the history and background of the verses and pictures. Here's a parting thought from the book. "Ride, ride the carousel, Reach for the golden ring, Never to finish, But begin again. Life is a circular thing."
An amusing and interesting book.......2000-03-14
I found this book a little different from other children's books of verse. It is a book of victorian verses that teach children of good manners, and others that are just plain amusing. Some of the verses are cumulative, which means a new line is added with each verse, such as "the little old lady who swallowed a fly" which are good for helping children understand the progression of the story, as well as helping them to learn to read because the words are repetitive. I also found interesting the notes on the side of the page that gives a little history behind the verse. The pictures in this book are beautiful and look as if they come straight from a victorian scrapbook. I think this is an excellent book!

Book Description
This Companion brings together specially commissioned essays by distinguished international scholars that reflect both the diversity of Victorian poetry and the variety of critical approaches that illuminate it. The volume opens with an introductory essay on Victorian poetics by Carol Christ that offers a commanding overview of the whole period. The remaining contributions are organized into three parts. The first surveys the variety of schools and styles in Victorian poetry; in the second, the focus shifts from the form and content of the poetry to the means of its production and distribution; the final part positions Victorian verse in its contexts and explores its interactions with dominant cultural discourses. The Companion as a whole does more than map the existing state of scholarship in the field; it sets out an agenda for future research.

Book Description
William Morris is one of the most admired figures of the Victorian era. Studies of his Art and his life fill the shelves of libraries. Yet, for all this accessibility, an air of uncertainty has always clouded his image. Since Morris's death, biographers and scholars have portrayed the artist as a victim, bound to an adulterous wife. In Art and Forbidden Fruit, John Le Bourgeois lifts the veil of appearances, and shows the truth about Morris's life. In a close analysis of Morris's poetry and biography, the Author asserts the early existence of an emotional attachment between William Morris and his sister Emma, and how she became the principal source of his inspiration. Le Bourgeois follows the paths of Morris the artist and Morris the man, and points out the links between the poet's love for his sister and his evolution as an artist.

Book Description
Arthur Hugh Clough is the great undiscovered genius of Victorian literature. The golden hope of his generation at Rugby and Oxford, he battled against the orthodoxies of his time to produce some of the 19th century’s most witty and original verse. Sexually and morally tortured, he died at a tragically early age, his health destroyed by his devotion to the cause of Florence Nightingale. In this study, Rupert Christiansen draws on newly discovered documents to present a dramatic portrait of a maverick figure, whose radical ideas about politics, religion, and women will make him vividly sympathetic to modern readers.
Book Description
Selections include works by Carlyle, Mill, Ruskin, Arnold, Pater, Wilde (The Importance of Being Earnest), Hopkins, and 100 pages each of Browning and Tennyson.
Customer Reviews:
Merits Its Undying Popularity.......2006-09-04
It's got everything you could ask for from an anthology of English literature, with excellent footnotes and introductory materials. A real treasure trove for students of the Victorian era. Comprehensive index.
Narrowly Outdated.......2006-01-28
...and surely we wouldn't want to find ourselves inadequately prepared for graduate study.
narrow and outdated coverage of the period.......2005-01-28
This anthology appears to have been transported in a time machine from the 1950s. It is narrow both in its range of authors and subject matter and completely out of step with recent Victorian studies. Students gaining their knowledge of the Victorian period from this anthology would not only have a distorted view of the period, but would also find themselves inadequately prepared for graduate study. See the review of this anthology on the Victorian web.
Comprehensive Collection.......2005-01-28
Victorian literature is vast, for the era it covers was long and complex. This collection of Victorian prose and poetry distinguishes itself with its range. Features a fine bibliography and is well indexed. Also recommended: the companion book, Victorian Literature: Modern Essays in Criticism, edited by Austin Wright, a Galaxy book GB 52. (Try zshops.) Victorian literature received careful and respectful study in the Twenties and Thirties. These anthologies show the fruit of that labor. Highly recommended.
