Lattice Boltzmann Modeling: An Introduction for Geoscientists and Engineers
Michael C. Sukop , and Daniel T. Jr Thorne Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:

ASIN: 3540279814 |
Book Description
Lattice Boltzmann models have a remarkable ability to simulate single- and multi-phase fluids and transport processes within them. A rich variety of behaviors, including higher Reynolds numbers flows, phase separation, evaporation, condensation, cavitation, buoyancy, and interactions with surfaces can readily be simulated. This book provides a basic introduction that emphasizes intuition and simplistic conceptualization of processes. It avoids the more difficult mathematics that underlies LB models. The model is viewed from a particle perspective where collisions, streaming, and particle-particle/particle-surface interactions constitute the entire conceptual framework. Beginners and those with more interest in model application than detailed mathematical foundations will find this a powerful "quick start" guide. Example simulations, exercises, and computer codes are included. Working code is provided on the Internet.

Upscaling Multiphase Flow in Porous Media: From Pore to Core and Beyond
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 1402035136 |
Book Description
This book provides concise, up-to-date and easy-to-follow information on certain aspects of an ever important research area: multiphase flow in porous media. This flow type is of great significance in many petroleum and environmental engineering problems, such as in secondary and tertiary oil recovery, subsurface remediation and CO2 sequestration. This book contains a collection of selected papers (all refereed) from a number of well-known experts on multiphase flow. The papers describe both recent and state-of-the-art modeling and experimental techniques for study of multiphase flow phenomena in porous media. Specifically, the book analyses three advanced topics: upscaling, pore-scale modeling, and dynamic effects in multiphase flow in porous media. This will be an invaluable reference for the development of new theories and computer-based modeling techniques for solving realistic multiphase flow problems. Part of this book has already been published in a journal. Audience This book will be of interest to academics, researchers and consultants working in the area of flow in porous media.

Dynamics of Heterogeneous Materials (Shock Wave and High Pressure Phenomena)
Vitali Nesterenko Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387952667 |
Book Description
This monograph describes the mechanical, physical, and chemical phenomena in powders and other heterogeneous materials under high-pressure dynamic deformation. The discussion does not take the traditional approach based on the Hugoniot equations, but views the topic from the point of view of nonlinear phenomena and materials science, emphasizing those aspects of the behavior that are sensitive to structural details. Based on experimental observations, the treatment: * focuses on strongly nonlinear phenomena, such as shock waves, solitons, and localized shear * takes into account effects of materials structure whose size is on the same order as the scale of parameter variation (such as the shock front or shear band thickness) * concentrates on situations not readily found elsewhere in the literature * presents experimental results in a manner that allows others to repeat the experiments or them for validation in analytical or numerical modeling * introduces models that can be verified by experiments Intended for graduate students as well as researchers, the book includes more than ninety problems at the ends of chapters to help the reader develop a deeper understanding of the material.

Dispersion in Heterogeneous Geological Formations
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792367790 |
Book Description
In spite of many years of intensive study, our current abilities to quantify and predict contaminant migration in natural geological formations remain severely limited. The heterogeneity of these formations over a wide range of scales necessitates consideration of sophisticated transport theories. The evolution of such theories has escalated to the point that a review of the subject seems timely. While conceptual and mathematical developments were crucial to the introduction of these new approaches, there are now too many publications that contain theoretical abstractions without regard to real systems, or incremental improvements to existing theories which are known not to be applicable. This volume brings together articles representing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art approaches for characterization and quantification of contaminant dispersion in heterogeneous porous media.

Dynamics of Surfaces and Reaction Kinetics in Heterogeneous Catalysis (Studies in Surface Science and Catalysis)
Manufacturer: Elsevier Science ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0444826092 |
Book Description
Many processes of the chemical industry are based upon heterogeneous catalysis. Two important items of these processes are the development of the catalyst itself and the design and optimization of the reactor. Both aspects would benefit from rigorous and accurate kinetic modeling, based upon information on the working catalyst gained from classical steady state experimentation, but also from studies using surface science techniques, from quantum chemical calculations providing more insight into possible reaction pathways and from transient experimentation dealing with reactions and reactors. This information is seldom combined into a kinetic model and into a quantitative description of the process. Generally the catalytic aspects are dealt with by chemists and by physicists, while the chemical engineers are called upon for mechanical aspects of the reactor design and its control. The symposium "Dynamics of Surfaces and Reaction Kinetics in Heterogeneous Catalysis" aims at illustrating a more global and concerted approach through a number of prestigious keynote lectures and severely screened oral and poster presentations.
