4 out of 5 stars Lots of show, little substance.......2001-08-12

I found this book to have lots of great ideas for folding paper and putting together some cute books. But what I found lacking in the book was any real substance regarding the content of the children's books. The emphasis was clearly on the appearance of the projects, and the author had little to nothing to offer as far as how the books affected the writing level of the children, except for quantity. Quality was overlooked. I found a later book by this author much more informative. This was Literacy and the Book Arts. I bought A Book of One's Own to fill in the gaps about making some of the children's books he referred to in his later book.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked on Books! (book arts to develop literacy).......2001-02-24

This book is the first of Paul Johnson's 2 books on developing writing skills in elementary school kids through book arts. The book is useful in two important ways. First, it contains a good number of easy to follow instructions for a wide range of relatively simple paper folding and paper engineering bookmaking strategies. Someone with little experience in book arts can easily make these books. For that practical aspect alone, this book is an excellent resource.

But the second reason is perhaps more important. Johnson makes persuasive arguements for integrating the act of writing with the making of books. The book structures provide creative points of departure that tap into visual and spatial modes of learning. Johnson gives sound reasons to employ such strategies in "publishing centers" found in many elementary classrooms. He gives many practical tips about what one can expect from various age-groups of kids and the degree of facilitation required by the adults in charge.

For a day to day reference and useful tool for unit and larger curriculum planning this is a gem. Johnson's second book, Literacy Through the Book Arts expands the theory dimension of A Book of One's Own. For teachers who truely want to pursue integrated curriculum strategies I highly recommend both of Johnson's books.

I have used Johnson's book to explore possibilities for both my kids' book-making projects (and facilitating projects in their elementary school classrooms) and those of my college students (I teach printmaking and book arts at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)

Read Johnson's books and you'll be hooked!

    Book Description

Most architects who build do not make buildings; they make information that makes buildings. Making buildings requires acquiring knowledge not only of the world of information exchange, but also of the world of making things. It is an expertise that goes beyond the architectural drawing and an expertise that many designers cannot claim to fully possess or practice.

Design through Making is not only directed at architects, but engineers, educators, fabricators, machine operators, and anyone with an interest in the manifestation of ideas. It seeks to challenge outmoded notions that building production is preceded by design, and making is merely the cooking of the raw, or the end game where no further design ideas are explored. Here, a hybrid mode is recognised where the investigation of ideas is fully engaged with the tactile, physical nature of architecture and building processes. It is an issue that celebrates the re-emergence of making, not merely as an immense resource for ideas, experimentation and customisation, but as a critical resource that will redefine architectural practices.

This title includes the work of Block Architecture, Mark Burry, Thomas Heatherwick Studios and Walter Pichler; there is also a special feature on Japanese traditions in architecture. Contributors include: Iain Borden, Sarah Chaplin, David Dunster, Jonathan Hill and Mark Prizeman.

2 out of 5 stars It Promises Much...........2002-02-24

But offers little. There are some excellent ideas in this book, but there doesn't seem to be much pay-off. I guess I prefer a more step-by-step approach, in that when someone offers up an idea for making a tiara out of net and wire, I expect some diagrams and instructions. I understand the need for fast and dirty costuming - I don't have to like it! - but every costumer generally finds his or her own ways, and there don't seem to be any new ways in this book that I, or others that I have learned from or spoken with, haven't already passed on (or found in other books, picked up on the streets, heard of in dank bars, and so on and so forth....heh....).

Which is to say, a true compendium of all the tricks of the trade would be as thick and as heavy as the Unabridged Knowledge Of All Things Useful.

    3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2001-03-01

I have had this book for about 5 years - the length of time I have been sewing historic garb. It has some useful info, and nice illustrations. It is rather clear cut as well, but if you are looking for specifics and acurate costumes this wouldnt be the best choice. Sort of a quick and dirty guide. All in all, useful info for all kinds of costuming, but one can find a much more comprehensive, period specific book for a bit more money. Works well as a companion book.

4 out of 5 stars Great Resource for High School Theater!.......2001-02-10

Costumes frequently loom large in the production of high school theater: where shall we get them? We can't afford to rent! How the heck do I make period costumes?

This lovely book helps fill the gap and, when used in conjunction with Holkeboer's "Patterns for Theatrical Costumes," eases the problem of costume patterns and construction to a great degree. Highly recommended!

    4 out of 5 stars a concise overview.......2000-05-28

I was so happy to find this book and I've been doing costumes for twenty years. This is a concise overview of the historical periods- a starting point for doing in depth research if you're a beginner but also great as a quick reference if you already know the periods. The easy "cheat" way to sew costumes if worth the price of the book alone. Thanks to Mary Kidd for a truly useful costume resource

3 out of 5 stars Outstanding designs, but lacks of essential information.......1998-10-22

I found the designs and patterns in Ms. Kidd's book very accurate and easy to execute. Some of the designs, particularly those from the the Middle Ages were beautifully made and outstanding. Nevertheless, the summaries describing the periods were extremely brief. I also hoped to find essential information about the materials that were used in the original designs centuries ago, but I guess I'll have to keep on looking elsewhere. If you are a beginner, if you need ideas and already have fair knowledge of sewing techniques, this book is definitely for you.

I bought this book in 1999 and love it. I made a small quilt using blues for the sky and used rusts for fall leaves in the panes of the windows. It is a very well thought out book with good details to teach you to fold your own windows. I love it in my collection of books. I think I will make another Cathedral Window quilt.

I bought this book in 1998 and started as a rank beginner to quilting. This book led me through all the twists and turns of the process and it was amazing that I could find confidence and eventually make such an heirloom. My finished project is on my site under Sewing Projects page: www.itsmysite.com/joannely

Because I am a beginner in English-studying, so I am not very clear about what it says. while I need such kind of information now , and what I can remember is little.I just know my teacher said it is a good book.I am now still not quite clear about what corporate identity is, and how it affect a corporation like Coca-cola.The more is better.

5 out of 5 stars a must read for anyone interested in their own identity.......1998-03-31

I read this book as a required textbook for a class on Corporate Identity. in my opinion Wally Olins is one of the top sources of information on CI in the world and this book pretty much covers the whole nine yards of CI. It's fun to read, easy to read and has enough depth for everyone. I've used the book as a step-by-step guide and as a source of information. I've even used it to convince my company's president our marketing plans were correct and we were on the right course. I can recommend this book to everyone, even people not so much intersted in CI. Book Description

Back in Print The first comprehensive overview of the work of Garry Winogrand, long out of print and difficult to come by, contains an eloquent and important essay on the life and work of the photographer by John Szarkowski and a lavish plate section presenting the photographs thematically. Grouped under the following titles-- Eisenhower Years, The Street, Women, The Zoo, On the Road, The Sixties, Etc, The Fort Worth Fat Stock Show and Rodeo, Airport, and Unfinished Work-- many of the 179 plates are works that had never before been published. The last section includes 25 pictures chosen from the enormous body of work that Winogrand left unedited at the time of his death in 1984. In his essay, Szarkowski, who knew the photographer well during most of his career, describes the development of Winogrand's pictorial strategies during his years as a photojournalist, the increasing complexity of his motifs as he pursued more personal goals, and the challenge posed for other photographers by the powerful and distinctive authority of Winogrand's best work, "with its manic sense of a life balanced somewhere between animal high spirits and an apprehension of moral disaster."

5 out of 5 stars Go For It.......2006-04-25

You won't regret putting this one in your collection. Garry probably lost the plot out there in tv land toward the end but Moma maestro plucks 20 or 30 pictures out of the dead zone to give us a treat. Frankly liked the post-humous stuff just as much and the book gives you a super buzz if you like that good ol' street stalker stuff. Don't even think about it ...whack it in the collection or send it as a gift...it's a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Winogrand: Figments from the Real World.......2005-07-28

Gary Winogrand came out of the generation of street photography inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson that included Diane Arbus, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, and Joel Meyerowitz. He worked at framing the "decisive moment" as he filled his black and white composition with split-second accuracy and detail. His subjects are caught mid-flight in candid moments of personal introspection, or engaged in social activity. There are photos of secretaries walking back to their Manhattan mid-town offices after lunch. There are photos of couples dancing, holding each other's gaze and unaware that the camera has recorded their intimate glance into each other's eyes. He shot the famous at night clubs, and took photos of passengers arriving and departing international airports. Wherever there were people on lines at movies, at airports, or walking down crowded city avenues, or stopping at store windows, or entering and exiting revolving doorways of skyscrapers, or of people waiting at street corners, kids hanging out, the elderly on benches, the young in love in each other's arms, Winogrand was there with his camera.

What you see through his lens is his version of America, of who we are, and what we look like, and how we fill in the spaces we inhabit from small towns in America out west, to the big city streets of Los Angeles and New York. He captures us as we work and play, he records how we gape as spectators at rodeos or at stippers at strip tease clubs, or at movies, or at square dances and Fourth of July parades in small-towns. He captures us at home, in our yards, in our cars, at zoos and at ball games and in our rooms isolated and alone.

Winogrand captures the soul of a nation. He is artful in his use of black and white in that he cuts a slice of reality and presents it as a full meal for our eyes to feast on. You can enter his composition from any angle and find a way into his image.

Winogrand is an American master, and this collection gathers the best of his many exhibits and shows and books of photographs and lays them out in chronological fashion, from the early 1950s to the the early 1980s in order that we can study the development of his genius over the course of his career.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Winogrand, you'll love this book.......2004-06-13

A very good retrospective of Garry Winogrand's career. All my favourite Winogrand photos are included, and the quality of the printing is excellent -- the images are not too dark nor too contrasty, with plenty of detail.

                  5 out of 5 stars winnogrand's eye.......2003-07-06

                          Book Description

The brown agenda or urban environmental issues became an important part of the international policy agenda following the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Rio de Janeiro, 1992). Urban environmental issues continue to remain a major challenge in the cities of developing countries. The World Bank strengthened its focus on urban environmental management with the adoption of this brown agenda as part of the Bank's urban livability program.

Urban Environment and Infrastructure reviews the World Bank's activities to improve urban environmental quality. It sets out the Bank's expanded brown agenda and emphasizes the crucial importance of infrastructure and environmental interventions in order to improve livability in cities in developing countries. The World Bank has more than US$12 billion worth of active commitments aimed at improving urban environmental quality. While the Bank's investments are directed at much needed basic environmental services especially for the urban poor, the challenge of improving urban environment or livability in large cities needs further attention. Increasing climate variability, its impacts, especially sea-level rise, and urban impacts of natural disasters are becoming more and more part of the daily challenges facing cities in the developing world, seventy percent of which are located on the coasts. The volume provides pragmatic recommendations on how to deal with the challenge of this expanded brown agenda.
