Book Description
In the Hellenistic period, the Greek world enjoyed great prosperity after Alexander the Great's conquest of the Persian Empire made vast resources of gold available for the first time. The various royal courts of Alexander's successors, including the Ptolemies in Egypt, comprised a wealthy
clientele with a taste for luxury.
The group of gold jewelry discussed here-including earrings, finger rings, bracelets, beads, and a hairnet-consists of seventeen spectacular pieces from the Getty Museum. The author takes us on a journey through three centuries, beginning about B.C. 350, from the empire-building Alexander to
the beguilingly ambitious Kleopatra VII. This sweep through the turbulent history of the eastern Mediterranean gives a picture of the Greek-Egyptian blending of religion and art. The author demonstrates how the symbolism of dynastic power plays a central role in the interpretation of each object and
in understanding the assemblage as a whole. Discussing their style, iconography, and craftsmanship, he convincingly places the jewelry in late third-century-B.C. Ptolemaic Egypt and argues for the original owner's royal connections.

Book Description
This is the first full-length study of personal ornament in use in Roman Britain. Written by Catherine Johns, a staff member at the British Museum and the leading authority on the subject, The Jewellery of Roman Britain emphasizes the presence of two distinct cultural and artistic traditions, the Classical elements introduced by the Romans and the native Celtic background. The interaction of these traditions affected all aspects of Romano-British life and is vividly illustrated in the jewelry, many pieces of which have only recently emerged from the soil of the British Isles.
The meaning and significance of personal ornament in various cultures is discussed, and the special problems inherent in the study of archaeological material are explained. Handsomely illustrated and accessible to the nonspecialist, The Jewellery of Roman Britain represents an important contribution to the study of British history and will be welcomed by amateurs and professionals alike.
Catherine Johns is Assistant Keeper, Department of Prehistoric and Roman British Antiquities, the British Museum.

ASTOUNDING!!!!!!!.......2007-05-22
I ordered this blind, generally liking Don McC's work. I ordered a dozen used photo books and this was the one I was most indifferent to BEFORE it arrived. As a lover of fine art landscape, still life, street/reportage I doubted that this work would really hold me. WOW!!!! The book is beautifully made and the image reproduction absolutely spot on (better than the vast majority of quality photo books I own). The shots are first rate from cover to cover and the mood conveyed throughout truly captivating and constant. The cohesion is amazing, yet the images for me did not become repetitive. For those with experience of Africa or the desire to go and get beyond the tourist trail, this book will resonate strongly. I got mine for $29 used mint. That has to be a steal for a book that leaves a permanent mark. The image on the front cover in no way conveys the far better quality of the content. This sort of stuff has been done time an time again and i thought that it would be typical of the work done by a 'retired' reportage guy, ie lacking in purpose and true insight. I am blown away.....

His Life That Illustrates Death.......2003-02-01
I came back to Don McCullin after accidentally coming across a collection of his photos many years ago. A photgraph he took of a starving albino Biafran boy had seared its self into my memory, though at the time I was too wrapped up in my college reading requirements to fully explore his work and autobiography. So five years later, while I couldn't remember McCullin's name, the power of that one picture egged me on until I finally, after digging through the university library's photo section for a few hours, found his books again.
The autobiography is amazing because of the incredible story and insanity of McCullin's career. It is all the more extraordinary because of the direct potency of the writing coming from a man who has suffered from dyslexia and generally avoided books. With this work McCullin shows the humanity of war and the morbid destruction thrust upon a people; the surreal insanity that must infect those living with and creating death.
With yet another large scale war impending this book is an illustration of the basic humanity that too often gets lost in politics.
Demons and Dirt.......2001-07-11
This book is more than just a description of one man's life. As one wades through chapter after chapter of Don McCullin's thoughts and reflections, it's plain to see that he is a fighter. From a harsh upbringing in wartime London, to his constant struggle to bring images of conflict and misery into the public eye and his resultant battle against the ghosts of his death-stained past, a theme of conflict courses through the pages of this book like hot blood from a unstaunched bullet wound.
Unlike John Simpson's hedonistic autobiography of his life hopping between the earth's hotspots, "Strange Places, Questionable People", McCullin dashes past the glorifying clichés of foreign correspondence and portrays the harsh reality of a life under constant pressure, whether it be the initial social stigma of being of an inferior class within the media sector, the fear experienced as incoming artillery comes whistling towards him, or being locked up in a foreign prison, where death lurks around every corner.
This is McCullin's way of exorcising the demons of a life filled with frightful images that most of us merely glance at from time to time, and acknowledges this in the final chapter. Although McCullin does not delve as deep into the psyche as Anthony Loyd's memoir "My War Gone By, I Miss It So", this book rates as being one of the most sincere accounts of life on the front-line as I have experienced.

Book Description
With a death toll that continues to mount obscenely, claiming both Iraqi and American lives, the fiction that the war in Iraq is over has long been laid bare. Instead, there is a new emphasis on uncovering the chaotic complexities of the situation, from the time it began to unfold in 2002 until the present day.
Few people can cast as authoritative an eye on the meaning of it all as veteran newsman Charles Glass, who has spent over thirty years covering the Middle East and who has had unique access to the players brokering power on all sides of the Second Gulf War and its endless aftermath. In these diaries, which blend thoughtful analysis with personal experiences from the field, Glass brings to life the political machinations that led inexorably to today's quagmire.

Compassion for the victims of war.......2004-06-24
This book is THE book for Don's work. I found it, and another collection of his work in a book store and this is the clear winner!
I read an interview with Don McCullin in a photography magazine recently in which he described why he is different to other war photojournalists. His response was that he learned to be compassionate about his subjects. Not to just take photos of horror but also try and capture that emotion that the victims of war feel.... all I can say is that he succeeds completely.
While looking through this book you are confronted with the reality of war. It's not CNN, it's not your standard major newspaper shots either - it's the real deal. Looking at dead bodies, or children starving to death, or women crying over the bodies of their assassinated husbands you can't help but want to cry with them.
This book will change everything that you believe about war...if you let it.
A Photographic Tour de Force.......2001-12-02
Don McCullin is one of the greatest photographers of our time and this 295-page book beautifully reproduces Mr. McCullin's work. The book includes stunning black and white images of England, Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, Cyprus, Biafra, Vietnam, Cambodia, Beirut and Bangladesh. For example, the book contains (at page 90) an exceptionally moving photograph of a Turkish woman discovering the body of her new husband, killed with his brother and father in Cyprus in 1964. On the lighter side of life, the book includes gorgeous landscapes of Scotland. And the size of the images is large enough to really do them justice. I highly recommend this book.
