5 out of 5 stars A Thorough Text on Inorganic Chemistry.......2000-09-05

"Concepts and Meodels of Inorganic Chemistry" is neither an encyclopedia of descriptive inorganic chemistry nor a textbook of structural inorganic chemistry. The book is organized into six major parts: Basic concepts, bonding structure, chemical reactions, coordination chemistry, organmetallic chemistry, and selected topics.

This text distincts itself from Cotton's "Basic Inorganic Chemistry", Shriver's "Inorganic Chemistry", and Misseler & Tarr by the amount of information and details presented in each chapter. Inoformation regarding chemical reactions is presented within a framework of concepts and models that help readers organize and retrieve chemical knowledge. Descriptive chemistry is woven into almost all chapters and is the subject of special topics chapters.

Atomic and molecular structure, symmetry and bonding are discussed n very thorough and detailed manner. Almost all the topics in DeKock and Gray's "Chemical Structure and Bonding" are included in this volume. Topics that are usually discussed briefly or omitted altogether in many inorganic chemistry texts are given special attention: stereochemistry models, spectra and bonding, and inorganic mechanisms. Section on organometallic chemistry can serve as an ideal supplement for an organic course. "Concepts and Models of Inorganic Chemistry" will suit a two-semester inorganic chemistry sequence. While no major texts can cover all the topics in bonding and structure, main group elements, transition metals and spectra, this text has fulfilled all the above purpose. The text is written in a more advanced level than Shriver and Cotton. Well-written book!

            Book Description

The goal of this Volume "Conceptual Foundations of Materials: A standard model for ground- and excited-state properties" is to present the fundamentals of electronic structure theory that are central to the understanding and prediction of materials phenomena and properties. The emphasis is on foundations and concepts. The Sections are designed to offer a broad and comprehensive perspective of the field. They cover the basic aspects of modern electronic structure approaches and highlight their applications to the structural (ground state, vibrational, dynamic and thermodynamic, etc.) and electronic (spectroscopic, dielectric, magnetic, transport, etc.) properties of real materials including solids, clusters, liquids, and nanostructure materials. This framework also forms a basis for studies of emergent properties arising from low-energy electron correlations and interactions such as the quantum Hall effects, superconductivity, and other cooperative phenomena.

Although some of the basics and models for solids were developed in the early part of the last century by figures such as Bloch, Pauli, Fermi, and Slater, the field of electronic structure theory went through a phenomenal growth during the past two decades, leading to new concepts, understandings, and predictive capabilities for determining the ground- and excited-state properties of real, complex materials from first principles. For example, theory can now be used to predict the existence and properties of materials not previously realized in nature or in the laboratory. Computer experiments can be performed to examine the behavior of individual atoms in a particular process, to analyze the importance of different mechanisms, or just to see what happen if one varies the interactions and parameters in the simulation. Also, with ab initio calculations, one can determine from first principles important interaction parameters which are needed in model studies of complex processes or highly correlated systems. Each time a new material or a novel form of a material is discovered, electronic structure theory inevitably plays a fundamental role in unraveling its properties.

This text has alot of good and useful information although it probably could be better organized. One issue I take with the author is that he references other books in the series throughout his text as having much more detailed information on topics (e.g., "discussion on the stability analysis of a guidance loop is discussed in the first book of the series"). Where are the other books. There are 5 books identified but only two have been published. I purchased Volume II and would like Volume I but as far as I can tell it still does not exist! Volume II was published in 1991! Will Volume II ever be published (i.e., Modeling, Design,Analysis, and Simulation of NGC Systems)? In the software business marketing practices such as this were called "vaporware." I know alot of other folks in my industry who would be interested in purchasing some of the other books that are supposed to be part of this series.

5 out of 5 stars Applied Min-Max Approah To Missile Guidance And Control .......2007-05-31

This book is concerned with dynamical systems under a large uncertainty, and uses a min-max approach to achieve worst-case design. The book consists of two parts. The first part deals with robust control. It begines by developing linear controls to achieve relative stability (pole clustering) under parameter uncertainty. Surprisingly, the largest robustness radius in the parameter space is sometimes discontinuous (fragile) with respect to the control parameters. Then, the book discusses the control of nonlinear uncertain systems under matching conditions.
The second part uses differential games to develop optimal guidance for homing missiles against maneuvering targets. The target maneuver is bounded, but otherwise, arbitrary. Using miss distance as the cost, the book develops closed form guidance laws, as well as miss distance formulae. In this way, the control loop (autopilot) and the guidance loop are coupled. A parameter study reveals the basic difference between minimum phase (canards) and non minimum phase (tail control) missiles. It also shows the influence of the autopilot parameters on the miss distance.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A170793. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This study is a continuation of a previous work concerning the Affordable Guided Airdrop System (AGAS), a parachute structure that integrates low-cost guidance and control into fielded cargo air delivery systems. This thesis sought to integrate the previous studies and algorithms into developmental prototypes for test and evaluation (DT&E). Several objectives and tasks were completed in the course of this research and development. A realSim(registered) executable on an Integrated Systems, Incorporated (ISI) AC- 104 real-time controller integrated actual Vertigo(registered), pneumatic muscle actuators (PMAs) into the MATRIX(registered) environment simulation model used in the previous work to validate, analyze and improve the simulation model. A ground station utilizing the model's control algorithms, a downlink of platform position and attitude data, and a Futaba(registered) Pulse Code Modulated uplink demonstrated controlled guidance of a round cargo parachute (G-12). This system evolved as an RS-232 serial control RF modem uplink replaced the PCM signal. After evaluating, validating, and improving the algorithms from ground station control the model was written in C-code for incorporation into an autonomous system. The results from the drops were then analyzed again in the MATRIX_X(registered) model to improve the model and further qualitatively evaluate optional control strategies. Conclusions and recommendations for further study were drawn from this project.

                            Book Description

Written by an expert with more than 30 years of experience, Modern Missile Guidance contains new analytical results, obtained by the author, that can be used for analysis and design of missile guidance and control systems. This book covers not just new methods nor is it merely a compilation of older methods, although it includes both. The book discusses, in a logical progression, with its clear elucidation of the guidance laws, the entire field from missile dynamics to modeling and testing missile guidance and control systems. In contrast to existing books that discuss very simple and often unrealistic guidance system models, this book presents missile guidance models that describe more precisely the dynamics of the missile flight control system, making analytical results more effective in practice. The analysis of missile guidance system models in the time-domain and in the frequency-domain allows the generation of different guidance laws that supplement each other. Taking modern, rigorous approach that leads to improved performance in missile guidance applications, the book examines new guidance laws, and corresponding algorithms for generating and testing these laws, and includes effective new software programs developed by the author. The author provides an innovative presentation of the theoretical aspects of modern missile guidance that quite possibly cannot be found in any other book. It delineates new ideas that, once crystallized, will significantly improve missile systems performance.

From the supplier: The rapid execution and combat targeting (REACT) system is a $632 million system that cuts the time needed to retarget intercontinental ballistic missiles. The system provides more adaptability than is realistically required and is a waste of money.

More than the memorable adventures of a young boy, an elfin fairy, and a swarthy pirate who gives new meaning to the phrase "right hook," Peter Pan is an enduring tale that speaks of magic and innocence, fair play and personal virtue. The timeless artwork of such masters as F. D. Bedford (the original illustrator), Flora White, Alice Woodward, Mabel Lucie Atwell, Arthur Rackham, and Gwynedd Hudson captures the classic story's dreaminess as it follows the adventures of the boy who wouldn't grow up. From the immortal Wendy and Tinker Bell to Captain Hook and the lost boys, make Neverland foreverland with this beautifully illustrated book that reminds the child in all of us how good it feels to fly.

                                      5 out of 5 stars I Believe...........2007-03-16

This review refers to the Great Illustrated Classics of "Peter Pan" by J.M. Barrie, adapted for young readers by Marian Leighton...

Great Illustrated Classics is a great way to go when introducing young readers to the great literature out there. The stories are timeless, the print is large and there is an illustration on every page next to a printed page. It makes it a real treat, instead of a chore, and kids may be more inclined to pick up the books with this easier read.

Peter Pan is a classic kid's adventure(although reading it again recently, I found I still get caught up in the story and the marvelous characters myself), that has all the elements needed for a fun and exciting read. You know the story, Peter, the boy who never wants to grow up(I know how he feels), takes Wendy, John, and Michael to Neverland, home of the lost boys, where no one every grows up and adventures with scary Pirates, Indians, Mermaids, and a brooding fairy named Tinkerbell, fill the pages. I love the part where the readers are asked to clap their hands if they believe in fairies, to help Tink recover from the poison she drinks to save Peter.

It's a book that is a great to read together and out loud. There is some violence, so may not be suited for very young children, but a classic that should be read by all who want to be taken away to Neverland...even if just for a little while.

It's a wonderfully adapted edition for kids and the illustrations are marvelous. For another must have illustrated classic for kids, try Frankenstein( ASIN:0866119817), see my review of that edition dated 11/28/06.

Adventure, Fantasy and a few life lessons to be learned with the read.

If you believe..clap your hands..don't let "Tink" die!....Laurie

                                      4 out of 5 stars Peter pan.......2006-11-15

Peter pan is a great book. It's about a boy that doesn't want to grow up.There is a little girl named Wendy and she has two littler brothers named John and Michle. The setting takes place in Neverland which is a beautiful world filled with fluffy clouds .Also there is a mean pirate named Hook and one of his hands is cut off and is a hook now.His hand is a hook because once when Peter pan and Hook were fighting Peter pan and it chopped off hooks and and he replaced it with a hook.Thats everything you need to know about Peter pan.

5 out of 5 stars Why Classics are Classics.......2006-10-09

As one reads Peter Pan, one doesn't have to do much thinking to figure out why its story has achieved such worldwide acclaim. I had ridiculously high expectations of Mr. Barrie's imagination before purchasing this title, and he has fulfilled them completely.

Many parts of the story are nothing but nonsense, which I enjoy above all else. Mr. Darling, the head of the Darling family, commands his children to take their medicine after he hides the medicine he's supposed to take. He brags about how noble he is for drinking a medicine that tastes so much worse that theirs. Unfortunately for him, during his bragging his medicine is found, and the whole family agrees to take their respective medicines on the count of three. Sure enough, when three is reached, everyone except Mr. Darling takes their medicine, and Mr. Darling once again tries to hide his.

This kind of scenario is what I'd call Mark Twain nonsense. You can imagine it being true, even though it's quite high up on the ridiculous scale. Then there's what I would classify as over-the-top nonsense - AKA bull - which there is plenty of in Barrie's original story of Peter Pan. Going back to Mr. Darling, if we take a look at how he's doing near the end of the book, we find him going to and from work in a dog kennel. Ah, yes...grown men in pet taxis. What could be more fun than the "he-didn't-even-try-to-make-this-belivable" silliness of such a scene? To be honest, I don't know if I'd even read books if they all left out fun stuff like this.

Other silly parts of the book involve Wendy growing up a day quicker than most girls; the narrator claiming he hates Mrs. Darling only to call her his favorite character a few sentences later; the lost boys asking Wendy to change the characters her story just two sentences into it; the narrator using the phrase "woke into life" because Peter likes the word "woke" more than "wakened;" and my favorite, Captain Hook using a stale cake as a missle and then falling over it in the dark.

I believe the novel version of Peter Pan was written after the author had already established Peter Pan as a successful play. That may explain a lot about the colorful narration, which takes many, many literary liberties. We see everything from blatant narrator interference with the characters in the story to the shameless attempt at informing the audience that the narrator only chooses to make the events in the story happen a certain way so certain characters in the book won't be disappointed. Perhaps without these wacky (and maybe even insane) traits in the narration, there'd be no reason to read the book, since it would be no different from the play. After reading the Peter Pan novel though, I'd have to say it almost seems criminal to watch an adaptation of Peter Pan without any wacky narration.

Contrary to most adaptations of Peter Pan, the individual lost boys (of where there are six I believe) are actually more developed as characters than John or Michael Darling. Heck, at the end of the book they actually end up moving out of the Neverland to live with the Darlings and grow up to busy themselves in interesting professions.

I may not like the actual land of Neverland as much as I like the land of Oz, but Barrie's narration is unbeatable in my opinion. He could probably make a Jeopardy contestant's Friday night schedule sound exciting.

I believe Barrie has written another Peter Pan book as well, a prequel of sorts entitled "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens." It should be interesting, particuarly if it addresses what is contained in the dark dreams that haunt Peter throughout this book. Freud would have a field day with such dreams and the whole mother issue.

The only thing I expected to see in this book that I didn't see was "happy thoughts." That must have been a creation of Disney.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Darker than you'd think..........2006-09-06

Even though I knew that Disney movie and the various other adaptions out there were more sugar-coated than the original, this turned out to be a rather darker and more sinister book than I expected. Funny and charming and all that, too...but a little creepy in the way seemingly innocuous dreams sometimes are, when everything goes a little sideways and suddenly you aren't so sure everything is fine any more. Peter himself seems far less benevolent a soul than he is usually made out to be. In even the less flattering renditions of the story, he is usually only portrayed as childish, proud and a little selfish, but a stand-up sort of fellow nonetheless. The way I'm reading the book, he's practically a hedonist. The only thing that saves him is the fact that he has brief moments of chivalry and a memory like a goldfish. He and Dorian Gray should get together. Or maybe, on second thought, they shouldn't. Since that could lead to disturbing slashfic.

Seriously, this book made me sadder than I could ever have anticipated. Peter really is mercilessly heartless in his laughing, self-centered innocence. It really hurt my heart to think of Wendy and all her female descendants all giving their hearts' first love to Peter, one after another; the older, wiser women unable to save the girls from breaking their hearts over him in their turn.

Fantastic book, though, and a real treat for those who like to pick a book apart from a psychologist's point of view.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful classic version of this story.......2006-06-29

This version (Everymans Library Childrens Classics) of J.M. Barries Peter pan is a beautiful hard cover printing of the book. It has beautiful prints of Francis Donkin Bedfords (1864-1954) classic drawings, full page, in the book. The story is wonderful and the Illustrations are beautiful.
