Book Description
The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Human Paleopathology is a major reference work for all those interested in the identification of disease in human remains. Many diseases leave characteristic lesions and deformities on human bones, teeth and soft tissues that can be identified many years after death. This comprehensive volume includes all conditions producing effects recognizable with the unaided eye. Detailed lesion descriptions and over 300 photographs and diagrams facilitate disease recognition and each condition is placed in context with discussion of its history, antiquity, etiology, epidemiology, geography, and natural history. Uniquely, diseases affecting the soft tissues are also included as these are commonly present in mummified remains.

THE handbook for skeletal pathology.......2004-01-30
That's all that really needs to be said about it. This book is mind-blowing. It's huge and comprehensive for those who need a reference not only for diagnosis, but histology and pathology.
This book is a definitive text!!!.......1999-09-23
If you want to know anything about paleopathology, this is the book you want to use. It is easy to understand and great as a reference book. The authors cover every aspect of pathology from bone to soft tissue...definitely a must-have if you need the best pathology reference book out there.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Reference.......2007-07-20
You can read this book straight through as an anthropology primer or use it as a reference for anthropological concepts. It is excellent for either use.
Individual entries are tight and complete and include references throughout the text to other salient entries and a very useful reading/sources list at the end.
My only real criticism of the text is that sometimes the bias of the author towards the Gould/Lewontin viewpoint shines a little too brightly. (Their critics maintain that both Gould and Lewontin espouse theories that have more to do with their politically correct beliefs than good science.) Without some context to the furor over sociobiology and evolutionary psychology, the reader may be prematurely swayed the author's favored viewpoint.
Otherwise, I found it to be an excellent reference.

Book Description
This is a new and refreshing introduction to the human species that places modern humans squarely in evolutionary perspective and treats evolution itself as a continuing genetic process in which every one of us is involved. Over seventy scholars worldwide have collaborated on the Encyclopedia, which is divided into ten main sections. Following a keynote introduction asking simply "What makes us human?", the coverage ranges widely: from genetics, primatology and fossil origins to human biology and ecology, brain function and behavior, and demography and disease. Emphasis is placed throughout on the biological diversity of modern people and the increasing convergence of the fossil and genetic evidence for human evolution that has emerged in recent years. Because of the need to look at humankind in the context of our closest relatives, the Encyclopedia also pays particular attention to the evolution and ecology of the living primates--lemurs, lorises, monkeys and apes. It deals with the evolution and ecology of human society, as reconstructed from archaeological remains, and from studies of indigenous peoples and living primates today. It considers the biology of uniquely human abilities such as language and upright walking, and it reviews the biological future of humankind in the face of challenges greater than those ever before experienced. Boxes highlighting key issues and techniques are provided throughout the text, and there are numerous maps, photographs, diagrams, and ready-reference tables--all the reader needs in a single volume to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of how humankind has developed and how scientists set about investigating the origin of our species.
Customer Reviews:
Some interesting ideas, much padding.......2004-05-18
Anyone who is interested in understanding human origins is likely to be attracted to this book. It actually consists of a very comprehensive collection of articles by specialists - specialists on everything from "The structure of DNA" to "Tribal peoples in the modern world." Hidden away among all this specialised knowledge are some interesting conclusions, but they take a lot of searching for. There is one on page 358 - a three-quarter page box headed "Throwing". Barbara Isaac suggests that our ancestors, lacking sharp canine teeth or claws, made up for it, once their hand were freed from walking duties, by becoming good at throwing stones. There is another exciting idea on page 88. In another three-quarter page box, M H Day suggests that bipedalism involved a smaller pelvic girdle, which made it more difficult to give birth to a big-brained baby.
There are some more exciting ideas, but the great bulk of the text, whilst good background material for the specialised anthropologist, doesn't tell us anything very interesting. Some of it is downright irrelevant, merely filling up space. Why did we need an article on the New World Monkeys? They are nothing to do with our ancestry. And why must the book start off by trotting out the old chestnut about life starting off 3000 million years ago as "short stretches of nucleic acid floating in a chemical sea". Those who still believe that, do so on faith alone - it's science fiction. The truth is that no one knows how life began, if indeed it ever did begin.
What the book lacks, above all, is an intelligent overview, someone who can draw the strands together and tell us what it all means - the kind of overview that is attempted on the site evolution-of-man.info. Perhaps we should not expect this kind of overview. Certainly we don't get it.
The need for a new paradigm: intelligent design.......2002-03-06
The pieces of the puzzle simply don't fit. One doesn't have to go through the subjects of the prebiotic soup, the origins of life, the cambrian explosion, irreducible complexity of molecular machines, the fossil record, micro and macroevolution, the fine-tunning of the universe for life, to make that clear. It is already abundantly clear. That is one of the reasons there should be a place for intelligent design in science. The other, of course, lies in the fact that intelligent design has already presented itself as a viable research paradigm. It is not enough to say, as evolutionary theorists like to say, that, as Dr. David L. Haury puts it, "science has no statement to make beyond the natural world". The problem, though, is that science may be working with a flawed conception of natural world in the first place, by conflating nature with matter. The fact is that information may be a structural and internal part of nature, as it is a structural part of computer "hardware" and "software". It is impossible to deal with computers from a purely naturalistic or materialistic perspective that excludes intelligent design in advance. The same may be true about the "natural world", and science has certainly something to say about that. Naturalist "scientists" may want laugh and scorn of intelligent design. But theirs is a partial, interested and biased laughter, as is the laughter of a Republican towards a campaign finance reform bill proposed by a Democrat. This kind of laughter must not be taken seriously.
Cambridge Encyclopedia of Human Evolution.......2000-02-16
Excellent work. In depth treatment of the subject yet accesible to everyone. It covers every imaginable aspect of human evolution by the men and woman that are at the frontiers of this science.

Book Description
This textbook provides an accessible and comprehensive account of fluid dynamics that emphasizes fundamental physical principles and stresses connections with other branches of physics. Beginning with a basic introduction, the book goes on to cover many topics not typically treated in texts, such as compressible flow and shock waves, sound attenuation and bulk viscosity, solitary waves and ship waves, thermal convection, instabilities, turbulence, and the behavior of anisotropic, non-Newtonian and quantum fluids. Undergraduate or graduate students in physics or engineering who are taking courses in fluid dynamics will find this book invaluable.
Customer Reviews:
This is how textbooks should be written.......2005-11-10
This book is a page-turner. I originally picked it up while studying for a postgraduate course on shock waves, but soon decided that I wanted to know more about the various other topics Faber discusses: gravity waves, vorticies, etc. I ended up reading the majority of the book, just for fun! The pleasure of reading this book is aided further by some marvelous photographs of the various phenomena.
This book's great strength is that it presents the physics of the situations without getting bogged down in the mathematical details. (As for the symbol definitions, I was initially annoyed by that--until I realised that all symbols are conveniently defined on the inside cover. After I realised this, it was much faster to find symbol definitions in this text than any other I've used, where one usually has to flick through entire chapters looking for the definition.)
There are plenty of highly mathematical books on fluid dynamics; this isn't one of them, and I dare anyone to gain physical insight on how fluids behave by staring at chapters filled with partial differential equations. There is more to life than derivations. That said, all the results which I needed were fully derived, so it's not fair to say that this book presents the math poorly. It just isn't the book's focus, and rightly so.
Thus, I have to disagree with both of the other reviewers. I was using the book as an introductory text, and (although I had others) I found it made an excellent stand-alone source. For my situation (having little knowledge of fluid dynamics and wanting to get the necessary background to study a certain phenomena, shock waves, in great depth) this book was invaluable. I would highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in the physics of fluids.
A Book With A Different Purpose.......2003-12-04
I felt compelled to write a more favorable review of this book after reading the 1 star review. Actually I can not only sympathize with the other reviewer (from Singapore) but totally agree with that person. This book is not an introductory text, nor is it really a good stand alone reference. It really is weak on the development of the mathematics for any particular fluid situation discussed. It would be an absolutely terrible place to learn fluid mechanics. However it is good at discussing the mechanisms behind the phenomena. Many books offer equation after equation without a very good explanations; this book offers good explanation after explanation without very good equations. Thus for me I see it as a companion text.
It has its welcome place on my shelf with reason. It covers a lot of fluid phenomena not found in an intro text in what I would call a quick and dirty way.
For example - hydraulic jump. An intro text might have a section on this and would explain it in terms of energy arguments etc.. However the Faber book approachs the problem from a completely different angle and discusses the hyperbolic nature of little waves travelling on top of big waves and discusses the underlying reason why the waves gather on top of each other to form one breaking wave front.
Another example - Taylor vorticies and Benard convection (rotationl flow and natural convection) are treated together because they have the same underlying Raleigh instability - an insight skipped by most texts.
I would recommend this book for people in the field of fluid mechanics for the long haul that also happen to be book collectors. I would also recommend it for any corporate library where fluids are studied.
Redefines 'reading between the lines'.......2002-01-20
This is one of the most confusing and discouraging physics textbooks I've ever read. Faber has an annoying habit of using symbols without properly defining what they are, or only defining them much later in the text, which leads to extreme confusion and frustration. Furthermore, he covers the topics in a wierd order, making it extremely hard to compartmentalise information, especially if you're a first-time reader (to fluid dynamics). What exasperated me most was the fact that Faber simply dumped equations on me without properly deriving them. Faber set out to write a comprehensive book on fluid dynamics for physicists, but in my opinion has come out short. Way short.

Book Description
G.I. Taylor, one of the most distinguished physical scientists of this century, used his deep insight and originality to increase our understanding of phenomena such as the turbulent flow of fluids. His interest in the science of fluid flow was not confined to theory; he was one of the early pioneers of aeronautics, and designed a new type of anchor that was inspired by his passion for sailing. Taylor spent most of his working life in the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, where he investigated the mechanics of fluid and solid materials; his discoveries and ideas have had application throughout mechanical, civil, and chemical engineering, meteorology, oceanography and materials science. He was also a noted research leader, and his group in Cambridge became one of the most productive centers for the study of fluid mechanics. How was Taylor able to be innovative in so many different ways? This interesting and unusual biography helps answer that question. Professor Batchelor, himself a student and close collaborator of Taylor, is ideally placed to describe Taylor's life, achievements and background. He does so without introducing any mathematical details, making this book enjoyable reading for a wide range of people--and especially those whose own interests have brought them into contact with the legacy of Taylor.

G. I. our hero.......2001-08-23
G. I. Taylor was a classical physicist/applied mathematician who made seminal contributions to wide-ranging areas of fluid and solid mechanics. Using unparalleled physical insights, he answered many important and fundamental scientific questions using rather simplistic methods. The importance of his work can be seen by the number of phenomena named in his honor.
As a student and a long-time colleague of G. I., Batchelor is in a good position to give a vivid account of G. I.'s life. Behind the gentle appearance and manners, G. I. had a sharp and original mind. Never going with the crowd, G. I. research problems were highly individualistic. Batchelor attributes qualitities of naturalness as one of the reasons for his resounding success.
This is a highly recommended scientific biography for anyone interested in fluid/solid mechanics and applied mathematics. Not only is G. I's personality captured vividly, but also the scientific work well explained to the non-expert. In fact, a great way to delve into fluid/solid mechanics is by reading G. I.'s works on the subjects.
