    Book Description

Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics was a revolutionary book that caused a sea change in theoretical physics. Here, John von Neumann, one of the leading mathematicians of the twentieth century, shows that great insights in quantum physics can be obtained by exploring the mathematical structure of quantum mechanics. He begins by presenting the theory of Hermitean operators and Hilbert spaces. These provide the framework for transformation theory, which von Neumann regards as the definitive form of quantum mechanics. Using this theory, he attacks with mathematical rigor some of the general problems of quantum theory, such as quantum statistical mechanics as well as measurement processes. Regarded as a tour de force at the time of publication, this book is still indispensable for those interested in the fundamental issues of quantum mechanics.

von Neumann's account of why he uses the mathematics he does and his critique of the Dirac formalism is worth the price of admission. Those who deride him for avoiding the delta formalism seem to have been seduced by its meretricious computational facility. von Neumann anticipated - actually began in this book and his work on continuous geometry - the modern approach via non-commutative geometry to physics (see Alain Connes), and M-theory.

5 out of 5 stars Hilbert Space Formulation of QM.......2003-04-10

The ultimate source of Hilbert Space applied to Quantum Mechanics. John von Neumann was the first to systematically formulate QM in such a powerful and elegant vector space. If this is the Bible of QM in HS, Hughes is the missioner! Get the book as well -- The Structure and Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics.

4 out of 5 stars Has Strengths and Weaknesses.......2002-07-30

    First the strengths:
    (1) The author gives a rigorous proof of the incompatibility of the two theories of quantum mechanics, that is, the evolution of the state vector as determined by Schrodinger's equation and the collapse of the state vector by means of an observation. He does this by the concept of entropy.
    (2) He gives a thorough treatment of the "consciousness school" of interpretation, which makes for an interesting,if not entirely convincing read.

    The weaknesses:
    (1) the font is a pain to read; it looks like it came off an old typewriter. I wonder why the publishers couldn't put it into a more modern readable form.
    (2) Von Neumann writes this book , in part, with the intention to dispel the mathematical nonsense, as he perceives it, of the Dirac delta function. Therefore he casts everything into the unwieldy formalism required to do without the distribution. Indoubtedly he was trying to change the dirac formalism in use in quantum mechanics at the time but was fortunately unsucessful in persuading physicists to use his alternative language.

Summary: I recommend this book for anyone wishing to deepen his or her understanding of the foundations, conceptual and mathematical of quantum theory.

    5 out of 5 stars a classic.......2000-08-23

As an undergrad, I am sorry that I cannot share the perspectives of professionals as expressed below. After initial introductory courses, I got fascinated by certain untold conceptual issues. And one of the textbooks (probably Griffiths) suggested von Neumann had tried to prove mathematically that the classical formulation is just the furthest the formalism can go and we don't have to worry about underlying complexities. Later, Bohm created a formalism which von Neumann "proves" to be mathematically impossible in this book. I bought this book just to find out how the proof goes. But I got stuck with some tedious proofs on Hilbert space (which he calls a "digression"). This part isn't essential but as the braket notation is not used you need to consult this part. I think at least a strong background in linear algebra is required. Definitly not an introductory textbook. Most useful for those who study history of physics.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice historical approach.......2000-02-01

This is not the kind of book I would recommend to a novice person in the area, but it does give a very interesting view of how was quantum mechanics born. It begins with a thorough discussion about the mathematics of Hilbert spaces and operator theory to later merge Heisenberg's and Schrodinger's theories in one rigorous mathematical theory. It makes some remarks that allows the reader to see how was the 'new' quantum theory born and developed, since it briefly discusses the theories of Heisenberg and Schrodinger in the way they originally stated them. Maybe the most disturbing issue would be the notation since in 1932 dirac had still not developed the bracket formalism.

      Book Description

Aimed at graduate physics and chemistry students, this is the first comprehensive monograph covering the concept of the geometric phase in quantum physics from its mathematical foundations to its physical applications and experimental manifestations. It contains all the premises of the adiabatic Berry phase as well as the exact Anandan-Aharonov phase. It discusses quantum systems in a classical time-independent environment (time dependent Hamiltonians) and quantum systems in a changing environment (gauge theory of molecular physics). The mathematical methods used are a combination of differential geometry and the theory of linear operators in Hilbert Space. As a result, the monograph demonstrates how non-trivial gauge theories naturally arise and how the consequences can be experimentally observed. Readers benefit by gaining a deep understanding of the long-ignored gauge theoretic effects of quantum mechanics and how to measure them.

        Book Description

Quantum mechanics is of central importance in chemistry. To understand matter and its chemical transformations it is necessary to take a microscopic view connecting experimental observation to the properties of constituent molecules. However, at this microscopic level atoms and sub- atomic particles do not obey the classical laws of mechanics that pertain to the everyday macroscopic world. They obey the laws of quantum mechanics. The aim of this book is to explain the fundamentals of quantum mechanics from the point of view of chemistry; to describe areas of chemistry where quantum mechanics is most important; and to show how quantum mechanics is applied to chemical problems. To this end, the book is divided into two parts: the first deals with the foundations of quantum mechanics (concentrating on exactly soluble problems and the reduction of complicated problems to simple foundations) and the second is a tool kit for applying quantum mechanics to chemical problems (thus concentrating on approximate methods). Although advanced mathematics has been kept to a minimum, the nature of the subject means a certain amount of mathematics is necessary and it is assumed the reader is familiar with a typical first year mathematics course. Quantum Mechanics is an intermediate level text aimed at second and third year undergraduates.

            Book Description

Despite outstanding achievements, Quantum Chemistry has failed to achieve exact representations of molecular data from exact quantum principles. Hadronic Chemistry is a new, nonlinear, nonlocal and nonunitary covering discipline which admits all quantum models as particular cases, while permitting invariant representations of molecular data exact to any desired accuracy. These results are due to a new mathematics necessary for the invariant treatment of nonlinear, nonlocal, and nonunitary theories, known as Santilli isomathematics, and a new structure model of molecules with strongly attractive correlations of valence electron pairs in single couplings, which correlations are nonlinear, nonlocal, and nonunitary, thus outside all the capabilities of Quantum Chemistry. Following a systematic presentation of the basic methods, the new model of molecules, and its experimental verifications, the author applies Hadronic Chemistry to the prediction and experimental verification of a new chemical species, called magnecules, consisting of stable clusters of molecules, dimers, and individual atoms under new non-valence internal bonds. Finally, the author applies all these results to the industrial development of new, clean energies and fuels.

                Book Description

This book deals with a central topic at the interface of chemistry and physics - the understanding of how the transformation of matter takes place at the atomic level. Building on the laws of physics, the book focuses on the theoretical framework for predicting the outcome of chemical reactions. The style is highly systematic with attention to basic concepts and clarity of presentation. Molecular reaction dynamics is about the detailed atomic-level description of chemical reactions. Based on quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics or, as an approximation, classical mechanics, the dynamics of uni- and bi-molecular elementary reactions are described. The book features a detailed presentation of transition-state theory which plays an important role in practice, and a comprehensive discussion of basic theories of reaction dynamics in condensed phases. Examples and end-of-chapter problems are included in order to illustrate the theory and its connection to chemical problems.

                                  Book Description

Phantasmagoria explores ideas of spirit and soul since the Enlightenment; it traces metaphors that have traditionally conveyed the presence of immaterial forces, and reveals how such pagan and Christian imagery about ethereal beings are embedded in a logic of the imagination, clothing spirits in the languages of air, clouds, light and shadow, glass, and ether itself. Moving from Wax to Film, the book also discusses key questions of imagination and cognition, and probes the perceived distinctions between fantasy and deception; it uncovers a host of spirit forms -- angels, ghosts, fairies, revenants, and zombies -- that are still actively present in contemporary culture. It reveals how their transformations over time illuminate changing idea about the self. Phantasmagoria also tells the accompanying story about the means used to communicate such ideas, and relates how the new technologies of the Victorian era were applied to figuring the invisible and the impalpable, and how magic lanterns (the phantasmagoria shows themselves), radio, photography and then moving pictures spread ideas about spirit forces. As the story unfolds, the book features the many eminent men and women -- scientists and philosophers -- who in the Society of Psychical Research applied their considerable energies to the question of other worlds and other states of mind: they staged trance seances in which mediums produced spirit phenomena, including ectoplasm. The book shows how this often embarrassing story connects with some of the important scientific discoveries of a fertile age, in psychology and physics. Over a sequence of twenty-eight chapters, with over thirty illustrations in colour and black and white, Phantasmagoria thus tells an unexpected and often uncomfortable story about shifts in thought about consciousness and the individual person, from the first public waxworks portraits at the end of the eighteenth century to stories of hauntings, possession, and loss of self as in the case of the zombie, a popular figure of soulessness, in modern times.

To be fair, I should state I haven't read this book, but checking it a little against my knowledge, I find it inaccurate. On p. 208 Warner says that George MacDonald wrote a "series" about a boy hero, Curdie. No: he wrote two books, and I wouldn't call two books a series. Warner says that one of the "most successful" Curdie stories is At the Back of the North Wind, but this is a book in which Curdie doesn't appear at all.Warner calls Stevenson's Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde "the most famous doppelganger story of all," but it is not a doppelganger story at all.

5 out of 5 stars The Historical Mystery of the Soul.......2006-12-10

In a spoof of a college curriculum brochure, Woody Allen listed the following course description: "Metaphysics: What happens to the soul after death? How does it manage?" Nearly as funny, but unintentionally so, was the query on a questionnaire sent all over the British Empire by the Victorian anthropologist James Frazer, who was making an inquiry into "the Customs, Beliefs, and Languages of Savages". The question was, "Does [the soul] resemble a shadow, a reflection, a breath, or what?" Presumably the savages all had different ideas, but that doesn't mean that academics and divines all had a uniform and agreed-upon concept of what a soul is (or how it manages). How soul or spirit has been visualized or otherwise manifest in modern history is the theme of _Phantasmagoria: Spirit Visions, Metaphors, and Media into the Twenty-first Century_ (Oxford University Press) by Marina Warner. As a professor of literature, Warner has written an academic work, large and weighty and ballasted with plenty of footnotes. It is wide-ranging and often scattershot, taking in vampires, zombies, magic lanterns, Rorschach inkblots, Peter Pan, psychic photography, time travel, automata, ether, purgatory, transubstantiation, and much more. Warner is astonishingly well-read and knowledgeable, and consistently if the erudition gets too thick for the reader in one chapter, there will be agreeable surprises in the next.

Souls are important things, even if many of us don't have the same beliefs in God or gods that we used to. Warner writes, "Even when we profess agnosticism if not unbelief in a supernatural order, we are the inheritors of much classical cosmology and medieval philosophy about spirit and soul - in unconscious ways and in common parlance." If the soul cannot be completely described, that doesn't bother the author; she has given a broad examination of western attempts to do so. The book takes a more-or-less chronological tour of soul-stuffs, starting, surprisingly enough, with wax, and the lack of souls in waxworks. Souls have also long been connected with breath or with air. Aristotle believed that the "spirit which is contained in the foamy body of the semen" was conveyed by the father. The air in the sky was sometimes thought to be full of souls, and everyone in a cold climate could see that exhaled breath was a little cloud. From souls as material objects we pass into souls as manifestations of light or shadow. We have delighted for a couple of centuries in devices that project forms of light and shadow for us. The original phantasmagoria meant "an assembly of phantoms" and was applied to magic lantern shows, such as those of the notorious Etienne Gaspard Robertson, who found that projecting pictures in a darkened crypt got the best effect if the pictures were scary, like a Medusa's head or the ghost of Banquo. He thus set us up "... for the coming of the horror video, its ghouls, ghosts, and vampire-infested suburbs." Snapping pix of souls was all in a day's work for the spiritualists, with the new art of photography growing along with the new "science" of the séance. The scientists and objective observers never did find a good explanation of how immaterial souls or spirits interact with the material world to let us hear, see, or photograph them.

Warner writes, "The brain balks at non-meaning; meaninglessness, like formlessness, becomes the dominant scandal against reason, and reason, seeking to abolish it, generates fantasies ..." Her book is full of strange wonders, like divine portents in the sky such as "rains of frogs or of fish (and sometimes saucepans)", or the persistent story of the Angels of Mons supporting the good guys in World War One (acclaimed as a true vision against the protests of the man who had written it as a fictional story). _Phantasmagoria_ is a report on centuries of figments of the imagination, and reflects the understanding that ghosts and demons were present in the olden days of any period in the past, and will be with us in newer forms revealed by newer technologies and story-telling powers.

Growing up with in the golden age of computer games was one of the most influential things in my life. I absolutley loved Sierra, and then I began to age like everyone does. Saddly we've come to a time where they say computer games are dead and playstation 2 Dreamcast and the soon to come X-box have dealt an almost death blow to the computer gameing adventure titles. Dispite all the sadness surounding the adverture/role playing market. One game has risen head and shoulders above the rest. Phantasmagoria 2: A puzzle of the flesh. The game is dark, desterbing, graphinc, and full of adult content. Enought to make you sit back and get a tear in your eye for the days of old. The game is tuff aswell, no childs play. That's where the strategy guide comes into play. It's in depth coverage of ever angle the game can take is truly amazing. Being a computer gaming fan I have spent hours, days, even weeks stuck on 1 puzzle. That's why I say thank god for this stratagey guide. Without it you would be just another corpse waiting to happen in phantasmagoria 2: A puzzle of the flesh.

I had come home, too late to dine,
And supper, with cigars and wine,
                                    Was waiting in the study.

There was a strangeness in the room,
                                    And Something white and wavy
Was standing near me in the gloom --
I took it for the carpet-broom
                                    Left by that careless slavey.

                                    But presently the Thing began
                                    To shiver and to sneeze:
On which I said "Come, come, my man!
                                    That's a most inconsiderate plan.
Less noise there, if you please!"

"I've caught a cold," the Thing replies,
                                    "Out there upon the landing."
I turned to look in some surprise,
And there, before my very eyes,
                                    A little Ghost was standing!

3 out of 5 stars I'm Not Educated Enough To Understand It.......2007-02-19

I love Lewis Carroll's work, but sometimes I just have no freaking clue what he's talking about. I experienced this sensation of vagueness a few times during my reading of the Sylvie and Bruno books, but I felt it most while reading some of the poems in Phantasmagoria.

But what I could understand I really enjoyed. I really loved Hiawatha's Photographing, Melancholetta, Size and Tears, and The Lang Coortin', although some of these poems have strangely inconclusive endings. It's interesting to see Carroll's last poem in this book, Fame's Penny Trumpet, where he's really, really mad at academic big-wigs.

Make sure you read Alice before even attempting to read this.

4 out of 5 stars Vintage Carroll enhanced by Frost's art and Gardner's notes.......2000-10-01

This book has woodcuts by Arthur B. Frost that capture the humor of Carroll's poem perfectly. Martin Gardner has provided a short introduction with letters from Carroll to Frost regarding the art and to a friend with regards to para-psychological phenomena. He also provides notes for obscure words or puns. Frost and Gardner are what makes this the version of Carroll's Phantasmagoria you should read.

The poem itself is a conversation between a man of 42 and a less than adept ghost. Among the things learned are the 5 rules of behavior for a ghost, the housing requirements for a ghost etc. Carroll's vintage humor is expressed in a narrative poem of seven cantos using verses of five rhymed lines. The poetry is well written - the rhymes are not forced but natural, the humor relatively subtle.

This book justifies its being in the series "Literary Classics".

5 out of 5 stars We're talking the best of Carrol here........1999-09-15

This poem, writen in five line verses, ranks right up there with Alice in Wonderland. The poetry of Homer with the wit of Dr. Suess. I would suggest this book to anyone who likes poetry in any form.

                                      Book Description

What is real about city life? Real Cities shows why it is necessary to take seriously the more imaginary, fantastic and emotional aspects of city life.

Drawing inspiration from the work of Walter Benjamin, Sigmund Freud and Georg Simmel, Pile explores the dream-like and ghost-like experiences of the city. Such experiences are, he argues, best described as phantasmagorias. The phantasmagorias of city life, though commonplace, are far from self-evident and little understood. This book is a path-breaking exploration of urban phantasmagorias, grounded empirically in a series of unusual and exciting case studies.

In this study, four substantial phantasmagorias are identified: dreams, magic, vampires and ghosts. The investigation of each phantasmagoria is developed using a wide variety of clear examples. Thus, voodoo in New York and New Orleans shows how ideas about magic are forged within cities. Meanwhile vampires reveal how specific fears about sex and death are expressed within, and circulate between, cities such as London and Singapore. Taken together, such examples build a unique picture of the diverse roles of the imaginary, fantastic and the emotional in modern city life.

What is "real" about the city has radical consequences for how we think about improving city life, for all too often these are over-looked in utopian schemes for the city. Real Cities forcefully argues that an appreciation of urban phantasmagorias must be central to what is considered real about city life.

As far apart from the Disney classic as the movie version of Moby Dick is to its literary partner, Alice in Wonderland portrays the fanciful tale of the little girl, Alice, wandering about in a world of her own childhood imaginings and storybook recollections. If you have never actually READ the book, than you have a chance to know what your mother always thought would scare you as a little child, but really just adds to the fantastical wonderland which was the author's intention.
