Book Description
Historically, structural biology and virology have been separate disciplines, with the field of virology developing around particular virus families. However, recent advances in the techniques of structural biology, including high-performance computing and graphics visualization, X-ray crystallography, and electron microscopy, coupled with continued progress in molecular biology and virology have caused a major convergence of interests. "Structural virology" now provides some of the most outstanding examples of structure-function relationships in biology. Viruses encounter many common problems in their life cycles, and so the solutions that they have evolved provide instructive contrasts between different biological strategies for survival. These ideas are illustrated by each of the different chapters, most of which cover a viral system that well illustrates a particular biological function. The goal of this book is to unite the structural and biological aspects of virus function. With this in mind, each chapter has been written explicitly by experts to address a broad audience ranging from graduate students to researchers in structural biology, virology, molecular biology, and biochemistry.

Book Description
Both a history and a metahistory, Representing Electrons focuses on the development of various theoretical representations of electrons from the late 1890s to 1925 and the methodological problems associated with writing about unobservable scientific entities.
Using the electron—or rather its representation—as a historical actor, Theodore Arabatzis illustrates the emergence and gradual consolidation of its representation in physics, its career throughout old quantum theory, and its appropriation and reinterpretation by chemists. As Arabatzis develops this novel biographical approach, he portrays scientific representations as partly autonomous agents with lives of their own. Furthermore, he argues that the considerable variance in the representation of the electron does not undermine its stable identity or existence.
Raising philosophical issues of contentious debate in the history and philosophy of science—namely, scientific realism and meaning change—Arabatzis addresses the history of the electron across disciplines, integrating historical narrative with philosophical analysis in a book that will be a touchstone for historians and philosophers of science and scientists alike.

This is the good stuff.......2000-11-09
This book keeps you on the edge of your seat and never lets you go. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to know how to write a mystery and for anyone who loves horror stories. I loved this book and aspire to write such a compelling story one day. But just remember start with the 1st novel. That one will have you tearing at your eyes to read the second!
Good Book.......2000-08-01
I actually recieved this book when I was eleven to read as we traveled (uugh) cross country by car. Needless to say it is an excellent book. i haven't read the first book but now i absolutely have to get the third. while leaving mysteries it also had a quality you don't find in normal chapter books. when your done with a regular book and long to know more there is no way to do so. with these you need only oick up the next book until your curiosity is satified. this is a great book and hope you all will enjoy it as much as i have.
Great book.......2000-07-19
This is a great book, with secrets and plots everywere, has it should be, with Cainites. The secrets that Dire has, even those not known by himself, keep you thinking, and trembling. Great book of a great trilogy.
Suffers from "middle-book-itis"........2000-06-13
The first book of the "Masquerade of the Red Death" trilogy, "Blood War", was a well-written, fast paced, interesting novel with one flaw: It had no ending. This is a common flaw in trilogies or multi-book series; even if the main plot will carry from one book to the next, ideally, some major subplot should be begun and ended in each book, or at the very least there should be an ending of each individual book at a reasonable "break point."
This book did not suffer from this as badly as I expected it to; it did not feel like it had no beginning, in spite of the fact that it was a continuation of "Blood War". And while it had no true ending, the cutoff point was more reasonable than that in the first book.
Still, I cannot rate this book, on its own, higher than a three, because it is not a complete story on its own. The series as a whole may wind up with a higher rating than that, but as an individual book, this is simply a story fragment.
It's a well-written and interesting story fragment, but a story fragment nonetheless.
?.......2000-04-16
This book is extremely good along with its first part and third part. Dire does have secrets but only known to one other person, the mysterious Alicia. Together both are powerful.

An almost-perfect revival of a classic setting........2004-11-06
I was a devotee of the 2nd Edition Masques. This book is better. 23 new core classes and 8 new prestige classes gives plenty of options. Also included is an overview of the world, both historical and "forbidden".
However, the book pays absolutely no attention to d20 Modern, and many of the new core classes are simply over-specialized variants. It is also too tied in to Ravenloft; it could have been made for a more general 1890's setting than it was. However, all in all, a nice book.

Classics!.......2007-01-28
I remember finding this book in my mom's collection back when I was about 7 or 8 yrs old, and it's probably the reason I became a horror reader. The stories are all well-known classics (The Monkey's Paw being my favorite of the bunch), but it's the artwork that makes this a must-have. Each story is beautifully/grossly illustrated, and if they wouldnt scare guests, I'd frame the pages themselves! (Ya I'm sick!) If you can find it, get it!

At 33, this "kid's" book is still one of my faves!.......2007-07-03
When I was in the third grade this book came out in the Troll Book Order Club. (Now a part of Scholastic, if I'm not mistaken) I think it was all of $1.97.
It quickly became one of my favorites. The years went by, I buried it in a multitude of other children's books that I outgrew and proceded to forget about.
When I graduated college with my Elem. Ed. degree, I reclaimed all of my books from home and put them in my "professional" library. :)
Ten years later, I've never read this to a group of kids without them sitting on the edge of their seats. Waiting... Wondering what the prince will find...
It's always the most popular book in my classroom library.
I need to replace my original, actually, because it was loved so much it disappeared. ;)
Fun and hair-raising!.......2005-08-29
Edgar Allen Poe (1809-49) is one of the most famous of American authors of mysterious and macabre stories, certainly the most famous 19th century one. The Masque of the Red Death was first published in 1842, and is rightly considered one of the greatest works of Gothic horror ever penned.
When the story begins, a strange and deadly plague is stalking the land. When the disease is contracted, the victim is dead within a half hour, bleeding from every pore, giving the ghastly disease its name, the "Red Death." The strange and demented Prince Prospero decides to defeat the disease by sequestering himself and a thousand courtiers in a sealed-off abbey, where they can lead a life of comfort, safety and sensuality. But, when the Prince throws a masquerade ball, there appears among the guests a figure dressed as one who died of the Red Death. Why is he dressed like that, and who is it beneath the costume?
I must say, it is easy to see why this is considered a classic of American literature, and why it is still such a popular read over 150 years after it first appeared! I found the story to be quite scary, in the older way, without recourse to blood and severed limbs, and keeps you glued to your chair reading it. I am now quite sorry that it took me so long to get around to reading this story, it's great, and I highly recommend it.
SPOILER BELOW:
By the way, there are those who see this story as something of an allegory, with the seven rooms of the prince's suite representing the journey of life, with the final, black room representing death. Prince Prospero (prosperity?) runs through life, finally meeting his end in the black room of death. Well, I don't know about that, but read it for yourself and see what you think!
Really good book!!!.......2001-12-23
I loved it! It was recomended to me by my 7th grade teacher. She said that bcause I liked Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury she thougt I'd like Masque Of The Red Death so I decided to check it out and I loved it! It was so good. I highly recomend it to anyone who likes to read.
Red Death.......2001-12-07
The book The Masque of the Red Death is by Edgar Allan Poe. I thought this book was great. It is about a ghost that haunts a castle. All the people were scared and they could not escape the ghost. The "red death" killed many people. If you want to find out what happens you should read this book.

Wish there was more.......2007-07-03
A shame this is a short (really short) story. But it inspired one of the coolest characters in literature. A must read for Poe fans.
Red-masked Death.......2007-06-17
"The "Red Death" had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous."
Edgar Allen Poe had a talent for the macabre and gothic, all wrapped up in beautiful prose. But more beautiful -- and macabre -- than most is "Masque of the Red Death," a short story crammed with symbolism, beauty, and the horror of a disease that no gates can keep outside.
A horrible plague called the Red Death (due to the bleeding from pores) is sweeping a country, killing half of the country's inhabitants in a brief time. Prince Prospero, thinking that the "external world could take care of itself," seals himself and a thousand of his closest friends inside a secluded abbey and prepares a lavish, luxurious party.
Five or six months pass, and still the prince and his pals enjoy the wild, strange parties he throws. But as a clock strikes midnight, a strange figure appears -- a blood-soaked mummer disguised as the Red Death. The enraged prince orders for him to be seized and unmashed... but the figure's true identity is more horrific than anyone can handle.
It's a simple story, and when Prince Prospero orders the doors to be sealed so they can't possibly catch the Red Death, you just know exactly what is going to happen. It's Poe's presentation that really makes the story come alive -- his lack of drama, and his sensually creepy prose.
And he takes time out of the plot to paint a beautiful, bizarre setting -- gilded, jagged, vividly colourful, with stained windows and flaming braziers, but no lights. Poe's writing is at its most exquisitely poetic here ("But the echoes of the chime die away... and a light, half-subdued laughter floats after them as they depart"), and he builds up a sense of foreboding that lingers through the story.
Prince Prospero is one of those people who is always around -- because of his birth and money, he thinks he's immune. Big sense of entitlement, and he's pretty hedonistic. Yet the only compelling character in the entire story is the Red Death itself, a creepy figure who never speaks a word and who simply glides through the abbey.
"The Masque of the Red Death" is one of Poe's most unique, poetic stories, ditching your average chills in favour of a more aesthetically-pleasing kind of horror. A gothic treat.
Trasfixed by the music, narration, and writing.......2000-03-07
I was on my way to pick up my parents at the train station when I turned on National Public Radio and caught this reading of "Masque of the Red Death." I was instantly mesmerized (remarkable for a station surfer such as myself). In fact, I immediately called my husband on the cell phone and made him turn it on at home. And, when my parents finally made it to the car, I shushed them and we all listened to it, with rapt attention, on the way back to my house. I can't remember the last time radio has caught my attention in such a fashion. I am going to buy several of these to play for my daughter when she gets older.
It was great!.......2000-02-24
the book was awesome! I have a question to anyone out there who will answer it. In the story certain words are capitalized that really shouldn't be. Such as Time and Beauty. WHY? If anyone knows, drop me a line. NIKKICELLO@excite.com
Re: Edgar Allan Poe.......1998-01-05
I love Edgar Allan Poe's work, but this would have to be the best because of all the symbols he uses in his style of writing. Most of his work deals with the dark-side of reality and fiction, and I love it.

Perfectly done.......2004-11-06
This was the finest box set printed during the 2nd Edition era. All the books were useful, including the pre-made adventures that let you know how you should frame your adventures. Add to the fact it had nice expansions, and its hard to beat this book, save for the new d20 version.
Masque of the Red Death Boxed Set..........2002-01-24
Ever wondered whats like to play a Ravenloft campaign in the world we live in? This boxed set gives you everything you need to get started in gothic like horror role playing in Earth, in the year 1890. A general map, the character classes and abilities. Its just another good oportunity to role play something quite new... You'll love it.
Gothic Earth adds spice to "steampunk" adventures.......2000-05-17
The Gothic Earth setting is by far the most realistic adventure setting from TSR in decades, but, as noted in another review, successful play requires a good knowledge of the late 19th century, its customs, technology, etiquette, etc. This is NOT beyond the scope of anything required by any "steampunk" RPG, such as "Space 1889" or "Castle Falkenstein" or the "Cthulhu by Gaslight" 1890s campaign. Any background research into "our" world which has been done for any of those games is just as valid for Gothic Earth, and this campaign setting should actually require less mental gymnastics than "Falkenstein" or "1889."
The boxed set is VERY nice, and the maps and illustrations are unexpectedly beautiful (in a horrifically Gothic way, of course!), far above typical TSR standards, but the presentation and background of "the Red Death" entity (Gothic Earth's answer to the Voices of the Mists of Ravenloft) is rather feeble; most skilled GM's could come up with something better as a house rule. The mini-module, "The Red Death," which is included in the boxed set is, however, a very different matter; based upon Poe's "Masque of the Red Death," I adapted it to a "Falkenstein" game (it would have worked just as well in any other 19th century game) and shocked the heck out of my players; it is so obviously based upon the Poe story, however, that player knowledge can easily become a problem.
By and large, it's worth the price, and far less grim than Ravenloft itself.
Looking for a change in AD&D.......1998-06-03
This is by far the most original campaign setting in the AD&D line. While all other campaign settings are rather hack and slash, medieval settings. This setting takes you to 19th century earth in the 1890's. Where you can fight the villians some of the lords of Ravenloft were based after. You can fight Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, Mummies in real Egyptian tombs, and many many more. The only problem is that to do a really good game of Masque, one must do a whole lot of research about the 1890's. I ended up reading 3 books about the History of L.A. where my campaign was taking place in. But if you love to do real good research for a campaign, this is the world for you! Oh, H.P. Lovecraft stories are really great adventure ideas for this setting!
