the Xenopus opus magnum.......2004-01-02
This amazing treatise describes the development of Xenopus laevis embryos at a level of detail far beyond that of any other work, of any other species. Longer more laborious descriptions exist for some, but the lucid writing, beautiful illustrations and absolutely astonishing accuracy of this work is beyond compare. How could Nieuwkoop and Faber possibly "see" the level of developmental detail described in this work from serial sections? To this day with our laser confocals and sophisticated imaging armada we see less than these two extraordinary scientists gleaned from their sections.
An absolutely critical reference work for any developmental biologist.
Useful as all get-out.......2000-06-23
We use this classic text all the time in my lab. It's got greatblack & white illustrations of each stage of development, and alsohas excellent written descriptions of the entire process. A must for anybody working with everybody's favorite amphibians!

Book Description
This book offers complete coverage of classic (one-dimensional) NMR as well as up-to-date coverage of two-dimensional NMR and other modern methods. This book focuses on all aspects of NMR including classic methods, modern techniques, practical advice for execution of the NMR experiment, theory, and more. For practicing NMR spectroscopists who want a better understanding of their subject, professors who want a wider knowledge of NMR, preparative (synthetic) organic chemists in industry who want to have more information about how to prove the structures of the compounds they make, and analytical chemists in industry who actually carry out the experiments and want a better understanding of what they are doing.

Excellent NMR book for the ones 'in between'.......2005-08-12
Lambert and Mazzola's NMR book strikes a nice balance between the weighty tomes aimed at NMR specialists, and the structure-determination only books aimed purely at synthetic organic chemists. For someone like me, who is interested in the experimental and technical aspects of the NMR spectrometer and of NMR spectroscopy, but only because he wants to run good, clean NMR experiments, this book is marvelous. Lambert combines concise and clear discussions of key concepts like relaxation, NOEs, phase cycling, and processing parameters, with succint and illustrative examples. One of the unique aspects of this book is the listing of ballpark parameters for many experiments including ones like mixing times, no. of scans, relaxation times etc. For all parameters, the essential things, and those essential things which you have to watch out for, are both carefully explained.
Lambert's book is a very useful tool for those chemists who are 'in between'- that is, those who want to do structure determination themselves and also learn the practical and fine points of spectral acquisition as well as processing, without too much detail, either instrumental or mathematical. Lambert and Mazzola give us just the right amount. A must have on the shelf of any scientist interested in NMR.
Book Description
As with its predecessor, this edition uses a practical non-mathematical approach. Features a number of recent developments in the field including two-dimensional methods, solid state NMR and an enlarged treatment of Fourier Transform methods. Contains numerous two-color diagrams.

OK, but not great........2005-04-29
The real strength of this book is in its compilation of a vast amount of physical data in tables and spectra. It is geared towards the practical chemist who wants to learn and understand classical NMR spectroscopy. The physicist will be disappointed by the convoluted explanations and lengthy paragraphs. There are no errors in the book as far as I know, but the explanations given and proofs aren't necessarily the shortest and most elegant. You'd need to consult other books for that. Also disappointing is its wide use of old school quantum mechanical wave functions rather than density matrix notation. While this is fine, it makes the derivations too long, and for no good reason.
Also disappointing is the price of $100 for a paperback! I boought this book 2 years ago for $70 at a local bookstore. How can the publisher increase its price by $30 over two years? This is absolutely scandalous given that it is only a paperback. You'd be better off buying a cheap pirate Chinese edition for $10.
A complete and comprehensive book about NMR.......2001-06-18
I strongly recommend this book about NMR principles by Harald Gunther. I study chemistry and it was useful for me in structural analysis of organic compounds. I think its most atracttive feature is the the clear and comprehensive way that uses to describe the NMR principles and experiments (including pulse experiments and 2D NMR). You understand what you read without having to read it once again. This book is also very complete and includes some solved exercises

Customer Reviews:
Long live Abbie, too bad the goverment killed him..........2000-08-23
Abbie was a rebel and I am proud to be from the same country as him.
He was the first to wear an american flag as a shirt (we see it on shirts, shoes, bandanas, etc now). He was proud to be an american and wanted to keep this country free.
Remember all the freedoms we have and what it would be like if no one fought for them.
Abbie was a publicity-hound and a snitch.......1999-10-31
As Emmitt Grogan of the Diggers said, Abbie Hoffman was a snitch. Fink, rat, stool pigeon, whichever word you prefer. For example: as soon as someone told him about them, he wrote about all the ways to get free food in NYC, which of course meant the authorities shut them all down. But Abbie got his momentary publicity buzz. Typical of how he operated his entire "career."
The right texts but the wrong presentation........1999-03-22
By attempting to reintroduce The Hoff to a new generation, this book certainly attempted the honourable. However, one of the most important elements of the original trio of books that make up the bulk of the text of this volume (REVOLUTION FOR THE HELL OF IT, WOODSTOCK NATION and STEAL THIS BOOK) was the brilliant artwork, punctuating the texts, that was not even mentioned in this one. If you can't find the original three, this will be a passable introduction to Hoffman's brilliance, but be forewarned that you're missing out on a unique experience.

Book Description
Seventeen experts, one voice! The premise behind Marketing: Best Practices is simple yet effective: combine the expertise of the best and brightest in marketing. The second edition continues the tradition of highlighting the best practices from every facet of marketing. Each chapter is written by an authority in their field of marketing, all of whom are highly regarded for both academic and professional achievements. This unique collaboration results in one of the most cutting-edge texts to hit the principles market in years.Dr. Doug Hoffman, in addition to his chapter on Services Marketing, served as managing editor to ensure a focused and streamlined presentation throughout the book. Without losing the distinct flavor of each contributing author, every chapter is consistent in both format and pedagogy. The writing style is uniform and targeted for the undergraduate level. Cutting-edge topics drive the Opening Vignettes, and the copy maintains a lively, energetic tone. The end result is a solid mix of passion, insight, and firsthand experience not typically found in more traditional "Principles of Marketing" textbooks.
Customer Reviews:
Disorganized and loosely written.......2004-02-24
This book is so concentrated on harnessing the knowledge of 17 marketing experts that they forgot to hire an expert writer to make it easy to understand for the student. They talk around many definitions without clearly defining the object of study. Case studies are haphazzardly thrown at the reader and important concepts are vaguely described and with uneccessary complexity. I hope next time they write a book one of their experts is a writer. I feel like I am back in World Literature reading something from the Middle Ages only this time I can't go on the internet for an interpretation.
Very loosely written and unorganized.......2004-02-23
This book promises to bring to us the best and the brightest in marketing by drawing on the knowledge of 17 experts. Unfortunately, they have proven a law in economics known as the law of diminishing returns. As additional units of a variable resource (marketing experts) are applied to a fixed resource (this book),at some point, the returns that can be attributed to the variable resource will decline. This is precisely what has happened. This book is written in a haphazzard format throwing definitions and case studies at the student in a loosely written hard to understand format. Many of the definitions seem to talk around the object of study instead of clearly defining it. I have talked with many students and they all have the same sentiments. Before you rate my review, I suggest that you read one chapter from this book and you will find that I have been very kind towards the author/authors. I would prefer to read a marketing text book from just 1 marketing expert that knows how to write a textbook. This is marketing not world literature. I am an A business student and I shouldn't need to struggle to understand the concepts in this book. The best example I can think of would be the chapter on consumer behavior. VALS is glazed over with little insight on the value of this highly reputed psychographic study. Check out the section on alternative evaluation in the same chapter. Compensatory and noncompensatory models of consumer alternative evaluation are quickly thrown out to the reader with a few vague examples. Even after taking calculus I am amazed at the complexity with which these authors present a simple subject like marketing. You are probably purchasing this book because it is required reading for your marketing class. There must have been some kickbacks somewhere to push this book. Next time they write a marketing book I hope that one of their experts is a writer.
The best of two worlds.......2001-03-02
This book combines the knowledge of excellent scholars of marketing in a clear and structured format which is accessible to undergraduates. In addition, the cases and other teaching materials provide excellent support.
Just Another Graduate Marketing Book.......2000-03-29
This book is no better than any of the other graduate level marketing books that are available. You might think that since this book has 15 authors it might have something that books with only 3 authors lacks. But, if you thought this you'd be wrong. This book offers nothing new and its extremely high price makes it even less appealing.
