        Book Description

An understanding of spectroscopic methods is a pre-requisite for students in chemistry and related disciplines from the undergraduate level onwards. Inorganic Spectroscopic Methods provides a firm introduction to common spectroscopic techniques and interpretation of spectra, and their application to inorganic-based systems. The approach taken is unashamedly aimed at the application of the techniques and interpretation of the spectra obtained. Worked examples, illustrative diagrams and references for a theoretical approach are provided throughout the book. Beginning with a introductory description of electromagnetic radiation and its interaction with matter, each subsequent chapter covers the physical basis of related spectroscopic methods (vibrational, resonance, UV-visible spectroscopy, mass spectrometry) and their applications typical in inorganic compounds. Each chapter ends with a number of set problems and short questions in the margin are given throughout the chapters to test the basic concepts. The final chapter offers an integrated approach to the identification of unknown materials - putting together the techniques discussed. This essential text for all undergraduate chemists will also benefit postgraduates in chemistry, and undergraduate and postgraduate students of biochemistry and the biomedical sciences.

                  Book Description

Spectroscopy is an analytical method used to detect and identify samples, and analyze the electronic structure and behavior of a compound. Electronic structure is the bonding of inorganic compounds that give rise to a compounds' physical properties and reactivity. The two volume set covers current development in inorganic electronic spectroscopy. Because the field is inextricably linked to the more general area of electronic structure, the volumes will cover both inorganic spectroscopy and electronic structure.

This second volume includes a series of case studies demonstrating how various methods and procedures in Volume 1 can be applied to important and topical areas of inorganic spectroscopy and electronic structure

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Many Useful Chapters.......2007-08-01

This is a multiauthored volume, which inevitably means that is more disjointed and uneven in depth than most single-author books. However, the advantage of such books, when done well, is that the authors usually make fewer errors and present their material as experienced practioners. This book is done well - and I found several chapters useful in preparing a set of lecture notes in a "Physical Methods" course for inorganic chemists. The depth of the chapters is, as I've indicated, uneven. Chapter 1 (Ligand Field Theory...), for example, is beyond the level of most first-year chemistry graduate students, but will be a useful reference for more advanced students. Most of chapters 2, 3 and 4 (EPR, Mössbauer, and polarized electronic spectroscopies) and more accessible and very appropriate for graduate student beginners. I've not had occasion to study the remaining chapters (luminescence, laser, IR, Raman, resonance-Raman, photoelectron, X-ray absorption & EXAFS spectroscopies & Electronic Structure calculations) as closely, but most seem to be very well done.

One major complaint - with both the hardcover and paperback editions: the binding is GLUE! I borrowed a copy of this book from a colleague and a page fell out while scanning a figure for a class! Embarrassing and Annoying! There is no excuse for Wiley to produce books that aren't cheap so cheaply!

                    Book Description

Spin-orbit coupling makes the spin degree of freedom respond to its orbital environment. In solids this yields such intriguing phenomena as a spin splitting of electron states in inversion-asymmetric systems even at zero magnetic field and a Zeeman splitting that is significantly enhanced in magnitude over that for free electrons. This book describes spin-orbit coupling effects in quasi-two-dimensional electron and hole systems. The first part provides a general introduction to the electronic structure of quasi-two-dimensional systems with a particular focus on group-theoretical methods. The main part of the monograph is devoted to spin-orbit coupling phenomena at zero and nonzero magnetic fields. Throughout the book, the main focus is on a thorough discussion of the physical ideas and a detailed interpretation of the results. Accurate numerical calculations are complemented by simple and transparent analytical models that capture the important physics.

                      Book Description

Few books exist that cover the hot field of second-generation spintronic devices, despite their potential to revolutionize the IT industry. Compiling the obstacles and progress of spin-controlled devices into one source, Spintronic Materials and Technology presents an in-depth examination of the most recent technological spintronic developments. Featuring contributions from active researchers and leading experts, the book chronicles the main research challenges in spintronics. It first depicts the different classes of materials systems currently under investigation for use in spintronic devices. The contributors also address issues concerning the operation of spintronic devices, such as the new principle for future devices that use spin-polarized current. This promises to enable switching of individual spin components of the device while avoiding crosstalk at the nanoscale. The book concludes with descriptions of both Si and III-V semiconductor-based spin transistors and the integration of spin technology with photonics. The second-generation spintronic devices discussed in Spintronic Materials and Technology will not only improve the existing capabilities of electronic transistors, but will enable future computers to run faster and consume less power.

                        Book Description

Nowadays information technology is based on semiconductor and ferromagnetic materials. Information processing and computation are based on electron charge in semiconductor transistors and integrated circuits, and information is stored on magnetic high-density hard disks based on the physics of the electron spins. Recently, a new branch of physics and nanotechnology, called magneto-electronics, spintronics, or spin electronics, has emerged, which aims at simultaneously exploiting both the charge and the spin of electrons in the same device. A broader goal is to develop new functionality that does not exist separately in a ferromagnet or a semiconductor. The aim of this book is to present new directions in the development of spin electronics in both the basic physics and the technology which will become the foundation of future electronics.

                        Book Description

This book is aims to be a comprehensive source on the physics and engineering of magneto-resistive heads. Most of the material is presented in a nonmathematical manner to make it more digestible for researchers, students, developers, and engineers.

In addition to revising and updating material available in the first edition, Mallinson has added nine new chapters dealing with various aspects concerning spin valves, the electron spin tunneling effect, the electrostatic discharge effects, read amplifiers, and signal-to-noise ratios, making this a completely up-to-date reference.

The previous edition of Magneto-Resistive Heads was the first volume in the new Academic Press series in Electromagnetism edited by Professor Isaak Mayergoyz, who is a well-recognized expert in the field.

If any good teachers in this field are available around you, this can help you learn from the teachers very well. But if not, it might take you much time to realize what MRH is, how it works, and what the background is, even if you are familier with basic science (university level). More examples of practically being (having been) used structure, better you understand.

                          Book Description

This book provides an in-depth exposition of spin-stand microscopy of hard disk data which is a new technique recently developed and extensively tested by the authors of the book. Spin-stand microscopy is the first magnetic imaging technique where imaging is performed ex-situ on a rotating disk mounted on a spin-stand. This technique is one of the fastest scanning-based microscopy techniques. It is non-invasive and has nano-scale resolution. For these reasons, it provides unique capabilities for the visualization of magnetization patterns recorded on hard disks. This book is self-contained and it covers in sufficient details the basic facts of magnetic data storage technology, the principles and theory of spin-stand microscopy, its experimental implementations, as well as its applications in hard disk diagnostics, imaging of overwritten patterns, computer forensics of hard disk files, and data-dependent magnetic thermal relaxations of recorded magnetization patterns. This book will be a valuable reference for the magnetic data storage community, magnetic microscopy professionals as well as engineers and scientists involved in computer data forensics, commercial data recovery, and the design of archival data storage systems.

                            Book Description

In this monograph, investigations of the electronic structures of the transition-metal oxides MnO, CoO, and NiO with spin-polarized electron energy-loss spectroscopy are presented and compared with other experimental and theoretical results. After a review of the present knowledge of the electronic structure of the monoxides, the spectroscopic method applied and its special advantages are described. The knowledge and use of the different spin, angle, and primary-energy dependences of the various relevant inelastic electron-scattering mechanisms provide new insights into the excitation processes of the optically forbidden transitions between the crystal-field-split 3d states of the bulk and of the surface.

                                Book Description

Half-metals are particular ferromagnetic materials which can be considered as hybrids between metals and semiconductors. A particular feature of these materials is that electrons at the Fermi level show complete spin polarization making them prime targets for research into suitable divices for spin electronics. This book is both an introduction and state-of-art survey of the latest advances in the understanding and applications of Heusler alloys and related compounds.

                                      Book Description

This book examines the strategic possibilities of poetic self-restraint. Marianne Moore,Elizabeth Bishop, and May Swenson all wrote poetry that is marked by a certain reserve--precisely the motive against which most feminist poets and critics of the last thirty years have established themselves. Kirstin Hotelling Zona complicates this dichotomy by examining the conceptions of selfhood upon which it depends. She argues that Moore, Bishop, and Swenson expressed their commitment to feminism by exposing its most treasured assumptions: they not only challenge the ideal of autonomous self-definition, but also contest the integrity of a bodily or sexual authenticity by which that ideal is often measured.
In recent years critical studies of Bishop and Moore have flourished, a large percentage of them devoted to explorations of sexuality and gender. A gap is growing, however, between feminist repossessions of Moore and Bishop and recent readings of their antiessentialist poetics. On the one hand, these poets are appearing more frequently in the feminist canon, but the price of this inclusion is usually the suppression of their strategies of self-restraint. While Zona questions the poetic privileging of self-expression, she establishes contiguity between feminist poetry and developments in American poetry at large. In doing so she asserts the centrality of feminist poetry within discussions of contemporary American poetry, thereby challenging the common perception of feminist poetry as an "alternative" (which often means auxiliary) genre.
Kirstin Hotelling Zona is Assistant Professor of Poetry and Poetics, Illinois State University.
