            Book Description

explains that our familiar three-dimensional world is a reality arising from an invisible ocean of unmeasurable energy which surrounds and permeates us. This conception as remarkable as it seems arises in a natural way from the ma thematical formalisms of modern quantum theory-a theory which is the most successful in scientific history. Physicists describe this nonphysical level of reality with the ma thematical entity called the wave function. Since this level is not accessible to us through conventional scientific equipment presents a detailed study of the wave function using images metaphors and analogies which are grounded in solid science. This underlying basic source of our normal sensory reality is thoroughly investigated and illustrated without the use of ma thematics. An intriguing learning adventure is thus created for the layperson as well as the scientist.

            5 out of 5 stars Superb.......1999-11-11

Fascinating reading, especially seeing how some of science (quantum physics) ties in with things Seth said.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite ready for the future.......1999-04-24

Norman Friedman deserves credit for the way in which he manages to explain the concepts of 20th century physics so well. Unfortunately, his interpretation of quantum physics is rather conservative. The result is that he attempts to prop all of reality into a framework that is just too narrow and limited. It is not the definitive book on the relationship between modern physics and spirituality, but it's a good start.

            5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......1999-01-28

I now feel like I have have as much knowledge as any PHD in Physics or Philosophy!! This easy to read book about our three dimensional universe and it's interdependence with other dimensions and universes, will absolutely fascinate and challenge you to think about everything in a completely different way.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is Good !.......1999-01-09

Norman Friedman has done a wonderful job of synthesizing the ideas of the whose who of Modern Physicists into an intriguing, easily understood presentation. It is quantum physics and its implications all without the math although the math is discussed. If you have ever struggled to understand the concepts of modern physics because the math got in the way (and you were saved by the class curve) then this book will finally tell you what you missed. If you haven't taken courses in the field, the book will clearly tell you the crazy implications. If you've read the writings of Jane Roberts you will be pleased to see that Seth's explainations of our world boundaries is pretty close to the current view. You can converse with great authority on modern physics after reading this book and actually sound intelligent. This is one great book. 5 Stars for Friedman

5 out of 5 stars All of the Concepts without the Math !.......1998-12-30

Dr. Friedman has done a remarkable job of presenting the personalities, concepts and the bizzare reality of modern physics without the math. This book should be required reading (seriously) for all students who think that they may one day take modern physics and also for those who love the philisophical implications of discovering the boundaries of the physical world. You get to understand "concepts" without the "math". This makes the math much more relavent if you ever have to apply it in a class room situation or even discussion at a party. It certainly would have helped me! Esoteric and Scientific all in one package, the book leaves you feeling that you could discuss the implications of modern physics with any leading physicist today and actually be able to intelligently converse! 5 Stars for Dr. Friedman.

2 out of 5 stars Over My Head.......2007-08-31

I have read several dozen books on the subject of Cosmology and related topics. This is a technically oriented book filled with intricate mathematical formulas and is clearly geared for advanced students. I am not shy about mathematics or formulas as a rule and have handled other books on Quantum mechanics, relativity and physics but this book was just over my head.

5 out of 5 stars If you really want to understand Quantum Mechanics..........2000-09-05

...you're probably out of luck, because no seems to really understand Quantum Mechanics! However, understanding how these very strange concepts arose while physics was "under construction" in the early 20th Century is probably the best way to come to terms with it. This book seems to be the best thing to a "blow by blow" account of how different ideas emerged, were discussed, and were modified or rejected. It contains translations of many of the original (mostly German) key papers, along with a prefatory essay that places them in context. Reading these papers is much preferable to reading the typical brief history of QM presented in most text books: you can see what the pioneers were really thinking about, in their own words, as opposed to a retrospective point of view that ignores the ambiguities they actually faced.

It begins with Einstein's derivation of the Planck spectral distribution law; includes Ehrenfest's discussion of adiabatic invariants; Bohr's final presentation of the old Quantum Theory; several papers on the theory of dispersion; and on to the development of matrix mechanics by Heisenberg, Born and Jordan; and Dirac's reformulation.

It does not cover Schroedinger's development of wave mechanics, nor the derivation of the Dirac equation for the relativistic electron, nor quantum field theory. However, the period covered was the most paradigm-shattering part of the development of QM.

Perhaps unfortunately, it is unlikely that the typical student of Physics will have the time to study this book. However, for those who really love Physics and want to understand it, this book is essential. With 17 major papers, it has enough material to occupy months of personal study.

Most people these days are reading peskin and schroeder, weinberg, ryder...etc. They are hard. Schwinger's books (3 vols) departs from most treatments; except for some similarity I think with weinberg (who i havent read). Here is what I like: 1) he wrote it to include everything but kept students in mind. 2) he wrote to counteract ''frustration with mathematical ambiguities and physical remoteness...'' 3) it is 'written by sure hands'' I would not recommend this as a first book or you might not see what he's doing; so do sakurai/bjorken and drell/ryder first, then deepen your knowledge on your second pass at the subject. In that context is it superb.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A427083. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Air Force pilots require dependable weather reports so they may avoid unsafe flying conditions. In order to better gauge the accuracy of its weather products, Air Force Weather has established the requirement for an Air Force- wide automated weather metrics program. Under the guidelines for this program, forecasts will automatically be compared to observed weather to determine their accuracy. Statistics will be collected in the hopes of determining forecast error trends that can be corrected through education and training. In order for the statistical data produced by such a program to draw reliable conclusions about forecast accuracy, however, the correct format of the raw forecasts and observations must be ensured before the reports are disseminated. Beyond a simple check for typographical errors, however, the system must also have weather domain knowledge to understand when the input data content does not fit the context of the report, even though it has been formatted properly. This thesis proposes the application of an intelligent user-interface "critic" advice system, to ensure not only correct product format and provide content quality control, but to collaborate with and advise the forecaster or observer during product generation, with the ultimate goal of producing more accurate weather products.

                          Book Description

The peace treaties represented an almost impossible attempt to solve the problems caused by a murderous world war. In The Lights that Failed: European International History 1919-1933, part of the Oxford History of Modern Europe series, Steiner challenges the common assumption that the Treaty of Versailles led to the opening of a second European war. In a radically original way, this book characterizes the 1920s not as a frustrated prelude to a second global conflict but as a fascinating decade in its own right, when politicians and diplomats strove to re-assemble a viable European order. Steiner examines the efforts that failed but also those which gave hope for future promise, many of which are usually underestimated, if not ignored. She shows that an equilibrium was achieved, attained between a partial American withdrawal from Europe and the self-imposed constraints which the Soviet system imposed on exporting revolution. The stabilization painfully achieved in Europe reached it fragile limits after 1925, even prior to the financial crises that engulfed the continent. The hinge years between the great crash of 1929 and Hitler's achievement of power in 1933 devastatingly altered the balance between nationalism and internationalism. This wide-ranging study helps us grasp the decisive stages in this process. In a second volume, The Triumph of the Night , Steiner will examine the immediate lead up to the Second World War and its early years.

                          Book Description

Dick Heldar is a war correspondent and an artist, well-known for the drawings he sends home to the London papers from wars in exotic places like Sudan. When he returns to London, he attempts to make a career for himself as a serious artist -- and re-encounters his childhood sweetheart, Maisie. The pair fall in love. And then he learns that a minor problem with his eyes is actually the onset of blindness, incurable -- the result of a head wound he took during the war. And as his vision fails, the light of everything around him -- his life, his hopes, his dreams -- fail with it. There are trerrible choies to be made -- between the love of the woman he treasures . . . and the love of the men who stood by him at the front. (Jacketless library hardcover)

Torpenhow was sprawling in a long chair with a small fox-terrier asleep on his chest, while Dick was preparing a canvas. A dais, a background, and a lay-figure were the only fixed objects in the place. They rose from a wreck of oddments that began with felt-covered water-bottles, belts, and regimental badges, and ended with a small bale of second-hand uniforms and a stand of mixed arms.

5 out of 5 stars War between men and within men........1999-07-12

This is one of my personal favorites. I read it in high school just for personal pleasure. Kipling's knowledge of art is expressed nicely; he knows his stuff from his father. He expresses his time period honestly and touchingly. As a female of the twentieth century, I cannot understand everything that made Kipling write this novel. It is more than just the simple story of an artist going blind, of wars and art. It is, at heart, the story of two men living in their world of violence and social mores and beliefs, two men brothers in all but blood. I found moments in this novel very touching, all the more so because of the tenderness between Torp and Dickie. This is a novel about friendship mostly, and a very beautiful one at that.

4 out of 5 stars A touching and vivid story about independence and decadence.......1998-10-30

Kipling proves his expertise as an author in this vivid description of a young, cocky sketch artist moving up the social ladder and the introspection he is forced to face when he can't have his childhood love. His professionalism in retelling the themes of independence vs dependence, decadence and self-doubt makes up for his sometimes annoying racist undertones and romantic depicting of the colonialistic era, which is just about the only reason for the missing fifth star.
