        Book Description

The past decade has witnessed dramatic developments in the field of theoretical physics. This book is a comprehensive introduction to these recent developments. It contains a review of the Standard Model, covering non-perturbative topics, and a discussion of grand unified theories and magnetic monopoles. It introduces the basics of supersymmetry and its phenomenology, and includes dynamics, dynamical supersymmetry breaking, and electric-magnetic duality. The book then covers general relativity and the big bang theory, and the basic issues in inflationary cosmologies before discussing the spectra of known string theories and the features of their interactions. The book also includes brief introductions to technicolor, large extra dimensions, and the Randall-Sundrum theory of warped spaces. This will be of great interest to graduates and researchers in the fields of particle theory, string theory, astrophysics and cosmology. The book contains several problems, and password protected solutions will be available to lecturers at www.cambridge.org/9780521858410.

2 out of 5 stars Not a place to learn subject for first time.......2007-07-22

The book by Dine attempts to cover a huge assortment of topics. As a result, the detail needed to learn the subject is sorely lacking. If you don't know it already, it will be extremely difficult to learn the subject here for the first time.
In a lot of sections, the author writes down the relevant equations, but it would take a page or two of detail to explain how they arise, and that sort of detail is lacking, so you pretty much have to accept things on faith.
Further, the author switches metric half way through the book,
so the first half is not consistent with the second half. And as to the cover, there is no explanation of what that is in the text, except in the most remote terms. He mentions LHC in the first paragraph of Preface, and then the first paragraph of the epilogue, so to my mind the cover is mis-leading. He should have probably used some sort of string diagram.

        5 out of 5 stars Clear.......2007-06-30

Dine is that kind of guy who can explain complicated thing super clear.
If you are not a physicist, this book also has something for you: the introduction covers history not familiar with everyone, and I am sure some detail you can find nowhere in other textbook.
        A wonderful book, beautiful stoies.

5 out of 5 stars Fills a much needed gap in the literature........2007-01-23

This volume will serve as a Rosetta Stone for future historians trying to make sense of the pre-LHC era of speculative physics literature. The author has accomplished a heroic task, preserving these elegant yet soon to be forgotten theories for future generations.

            Book Description

The book describes a history of the vortex theory. Introduced at the dawn of science almost 2600 years ago, it had passed through five phases of accumulation of its strength by absorbing the discoveries made during the Greek civilization, the Copernicus Revolution, the age of electromagnetism, the atomic age, and the information age. During the first four phases (see Chapters 1 through 12 of this book), the development of the vortex theory followed the same misfortunate pattern. Each time, this theory managed to bring attention of a new generation of brilliant scientists, who were enchanted by a deep physical meaning of its basic concept. But, although they employed the latest advances in science, none of them was able to produce a mathematical tool making the vortex theory practically usable. The fifth phase began in 1993 with the discovery of a unique spacetime spiral element, called the toryx. The toryx is a particular case of a multiple-level dynamic spiral with a poetic name helicola that describes the paths of all moving celestial bodies in our universe. The ability of the toryx to be turned inside out made it perfect for modeling the polarized prime elements of matter. A close offspring of the toryx called the helyx turned out to be ideal for modeling the polarized prime elements of the radiation particles. This discovery led to the development of a new version of the vortex theory called Three-Dimensional Spiral String Theory (3D-SST) outlined in Chapters 13 through 16.

            Book Description

This book should be at the side of every particle and nuclear physics graduate student and professional. Journeys Beyond the Standard Model starts with a detailed and modern account of the Standard Model of elementary particle physics, the paradigm of particle physics for the last twenty years. Its timely release coincides with the recent dramatic discovery that the neutrino has a finite mass, which is the first indication that the Standard Model is an incomplete description of fundamental physics at short distances. This book presents in detail three possible generalizations of the Standard Model: its extension to accommodate neutrino masses; its extension to avoid CP violation in the strong interactions by introducing a new particle, the axion; and finally, its generalization to low-energy supersymmetry, which provides a link between the standard model and Einstein's theory of general relativity. This graduate text complements the author's previous book, Modern Field Theory: A Primer, which focuses on the methodology of particle physics. Its aim is to give students and professional physicists alike a thorough understanding of the phenomena described by the Standard Model, while keeping track of the most recent and cutting-edge principles of elementary particle physics.

            3 out of 5 stars A well-prepared travell.......2000-05-09

Judging by this book, Pierre Ramond must be somebody who spends more time packing his suitcases than travelling. He must therefore be a very well-prepared and careful traveller. Two-thirds of "Journeys Beyond the Standard Model" is devoted to the Standard Model of fundamental particle interactions. Considerable understanding can be revealed by undertaking the journeys described in Pierre Ramond's book, provided the traveller invests in the Standard Model groundwork excellently surveyed in the book's initial chapters.

              Book Description

              1. We show that tachyons exist within Black Holes. 2. We extend Special Relativity to include left-handed (Superluminal) transformations to reference frames moving at relative velocities greater than the speed of light. This set of transformations forms a group that includes the Lorentz group as an invariant subgroup. The speed of light does not change under the transformations of this group. We find new features in frames moving at a relative speed greater than the speed of light such as length dilation, time contraction, and tachyons decaying into more massive tachyons - "reverse fission." 3. Using the (Superluminal) transformations of this enlarged group we are able to define tachyons of half-integer or integer spin. We show these tachyons are local and satisfy canonical commutation relations in light-front coordinates (the "infinite momentum" frame). Thus a standard quantization procedure is possible and a conventional light-front perturbation theory can be constructed. 4. Free spin ½ tachyons violate parity and CPT but do not violate C or T invariance. 5. The requirement of Left-handed Extended Lorentz group covariance implies an extended Dirac equation for spin ½ particles with doublets of spin ½ particles: a Dirac particle and a tachyon. We identify neutrinos with tachyon members of lepton doublets, and "d-type" quarks with tachyon members of quark doublets. 6. Further considerations lead to most features of the Standard Model for one generation of leptons and quarks. Thus the general form of the Standard Model, including a rationale for the form of parity violation, SU(2)?U(1), and left-handed doublets and right-handed singlets, is derived. 7. The theory requires quark confinement. The theory does not explain the existence of three generations or the mixing of generations. SU(3) is found to be the minimal symmetry group of the strong interaction if spin ½ baryon bound states are to exist.

These books are great fun for kids and teenagers, even some adults. I suspect, however, that if you don't read Burroughs between 12 and 14, you'll miss out on 90% of the fun. None of his Mars books are to be taken seriously. In "The Mastermind of Mars," for example, before there is even any dialogue, the hero is blown up in WWI, astral-travels to Mars, immediately has a swordfight, then witnesses a brain transplant by an almost-blind, 1000-year-old Martian! Then he falls in love with an old hag with the brain of a beautiful, kind young woman. Later he recruits the help of a gigantic ape with a half-human, half-ape brain. The author isn't the greatest stylist that ever lived, but he knew how to tell a story.

Writers I admire (C.S. Lewis and Robert Sheckley, and I know that there are others as well) have kind words to say about Edgar Rice Burroughs, and claim to derive inspiration from him. I mention this because I have to. It means that perhaps there is something in the man's writing that I'm missing. I must be honest and allow this possibility. The more LIKELY possibility, though, is that writers make poor critics, and will allow their superior imaginations to do the work that Burroughs didn't.

For one thing that has been said about Burroughs is that, while he could scarcely write, and was woefully ignorant, and inconsistent, he at least had a vivid imagination. Like hell he did. His imagination was the most pallid thing about him. This is clearer in the Mars books than anywhere else. Everywhere there are beasts exactly like terrestrial ones but bigger, fiercer, with more limbs and sharper teeth and brighter colours ... every forgettable sort of detail-enhancement that might substitute for true invention.

Burroughs takes the standard view of an ancient, decadent, dying Mars and adds nothing, except damsels and stilted dialogue. These are the books of someone who spends valuable time working out new units of measurement to replace feet and inches, whiles away afternoons dreaming up pointless bigger-is-better variations on terrestrial chess, but makes up the details about character and social organisation as he goes along. Admittedly he has plenty of time, since the story is invariably a fight-after-fight-after-fight affair, the author doing little to disguise the fact that he's being paid by the word. (Never let anyone convince you otherwise: his prose is ghastly.)

If you sense that Burroughs must have been reaching towards something worthwhile, you're right. If you want to know what it was, exactly, read someone by Jack Vance. Any reason there might be to read Burroughs is a reason to read Vance. But not vice versa.

These stories are as much a part of me as my beard. I first read them as a boy nearly fifty years ago, and they're as enjoyable today as then.

When Amazon says a book is 'value-priced,' they ain't kidding. Not only do you get five for the price of one, but you also get to see the original illustrations from a time long past. That alone was worth the price of this book.

Of course, younger readers won't get the nostalgia rush I did, but SF devotees should all read Burroughs; he was one of the giants who founded the genre.
