    Book Description

Lively, informative, and easy-to-understand, this book is a fascinating read for scientists across many disciplines and the educated/interested layperson. Beautifully presented with eight pages of color illustrations, Giant Molecules: Here, There, and Everywhere addresses the nature and role of giant molecules, which are the"source"for polymer chains. Grosberg and Khokhlov explain what giant molecules are, how they are formed, where they are applied, and whythey are important in everyday life and in science. The simple, non-technical style is complemented by full-color illustrations.
A CD-ROM enclosed with the book provides simulation of typical behavior of polymers, which is an extremely useful tool for teaching purposes. This feature will be of special interest to the expert in polymers across many disciplines, including molecularbiology, materials science, physics, and chemistry. The CD-ROM also allows the user to create a broad variety of movies simulating an almost arbitrary polymer system, customized to the user's specific needs.
Giant Molecules presents the subject matter much more clearly than the standard scientific text. It provides a unique opportunity to grasp the most advanced methods of polymer physics with the guidance of world leaders in the field. The book features a foreword written by Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, a Nobel Prize Laureate, and each chapter in this fascinating volume is preceded by a quote from such notable sources as Goethe, St. Exupery, and Mark Twain. Written in a simple, non-scientific style, Giant Molecules should be understandable to interested readers at any level, and the color illustrations and CD-ROM add to the appeal of this lively book.

5 out of 5 stars This book explains things........2005-06-08

I am a physics professor working on semiconductor materials. Polymer is not my area, but they always attracts me a lot.
I can't believe this great book hasn't been reviewed yet. Yes, it is written by two Russian scientists. But who said Russians can only write rigorous math books? This book is not a monograph but for everyone interested in polymer physics, material or popular science. It explains a lot of phenomena in a clear, consise and humours language. There is a little math, not hard at all. Freshmen level calculus would be sufficient to understand the book. In fact, all through the book, the authors were showing the interactions between different factors. These factors are the reason that polymers have so many tantalizing and sometimes contradicting properties. To explain those, math is necessary.
The movies included in the accompanied CD are great, think about how much work is put on making them!

      Book Description

Optoelectronic devices are currently being developed at an extraordinary rate. Organic light-emitting diodes, photovoltaic devices and electro-optical modulators are pivotal to the future of displays, photosensors and solar cells, and communication technologies. This book details the theories underlying the mechanisms involved in the relevant organic materials and covers, at a basic level, how the organic components are made.

The first part of the book introduces the fundamental theories used to describe ordered solids and goes onto detail on concepts applicable to localised energy levels. Then the methods used to determine energy levels particular to perfectly ordered molecular and macromolecular systems are discussed along with a detailed consideration of the effects of quasi-particles. The function of excitons and their transfer between two molecules is studied and, in addition, the problems associated with interfaces and charge injection into resistive media are presented.

More technological aspects are covered in the second part, which details the actual methods used to fabricate devices based on organic materials, such as dry etching. The principal characterisation techniques are also highlighted. Specific attention is paid to visual displays using organic light-emitting diodes; the conversion of photons into electrical energy (the photovoltaic effect); and for communications and information technologies, the electro-optical modulation of signals.

                    Book Description

The design and use of chemosensors for ion and molecule recognition - a branch of supramolecular chemistry - have developed at an extraordinary rate. This imaginative and creative area involves work at the interface of organic and inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, biology, medicine and environmental science and is providing new sensors based on the specific signal delivered by the analyte-probe reaction. The emergence of efficient fluorescent receptors has allowed the detection, identification, and even titration of, for example, heavy metal or radionuclide pollutants. Further, with sensors displaying specific and strong complexation properties, such materials could be detected and removed at very low concentrations. Further, among other species of biological interest, sugars, oxygen and carbon dioxide can actually be probed with optodes and similar devices. This is clearly just the beginning of a very promising line of research. Audience: Organic chemists interested in creating new chemosensors, as well as the many potential end users of such sensors.

                          Book Description

Stevenson’s brooding historical romance demonstrates his most abiding theme—the elemental struggle between good and evil—as it unfolds against a hauntingly beautiful Scottish landscape, amid the fierce loyalties and violent enmities that characterized Scottish history. When two brothers attempt to split their loyalties between the warring factions of the 1745 Jacobite rising, one family finds itself tragically divided. Stevenson’s remarkably vivid characterizations create an acutely moving, psychologically complex work; as Andrea Barrett points out in her Introduction, “The brothers’ characters, not the historical facts, shape the drama.”

This Modern Library Paperback Classic includes illustrations reproduced from the original edition.

                          4 out of 5 stars One of Stevenson's Best.......2004-10-04

Stevenson is best known today as a writer of juvenile fiction. This doesn't do justice to his skills as a writer of historical fiction or his ability to explore psychological and moral issues. Master of Ballantrae is one of his best works. Set in 18th century Scotland, it is an exploration of the nature and relationship between good and evil. In many ways, this is a parallel book to Jekyll and Hyde. In Master, the different aspects of human moral behavior are explored in conflict and relationship of 2 brothers, one charismatic and amoral, the other, stolid and virtuous. This is primarily a psychological novel of family tragedy brought about by the characters of the 2 bothers in a conflict ignited by the Jacobite uprising of 1745. Stevenson does an excellent job of handling the characters and plot. As with his other work, there is a nice depiction of 18th century Scotland. This is not a great work, but it is very good.

                          5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2001-09-27

I read The Master of Ballantrae quite recently and I think it is an awesome book. James Durie (the Master) is such a wicked man, but seems to charm (most) everybody. He is such a round character. He torments his poor brother Henry Durie and Henry suffers in silence. Only Mr. Mackellar knows of Henry's sufferings. The Master makes the book so colorful. It's full of adventure, romance, sorrow, and revenge. I highly recommend this book, because it was so interesting and kept you wondering what would happen next. I am sure it will capture your attention as it did mine.

5 out of 5 stars The most beautiful book I have ever read.......1999-10-14

Wild Grows the Heather in Devon is thought provoking, eloquant and superbly written. I have highlighted most of the book. Many of the prayers written, I have taken as my own. Excellent intelligent reading!

5 out of 5 stars Quite simply the best book I have ever read.......1999-03-26

I have always liked everything written by Stevenson, but The Master of Ballantrae far outstrips everything else. It is a subtle insight into human nature, and a great adventure story as well. The episodes are majestic, and the story, though bleak, is very touching. I have read it many, many times and think more of it the more I read it (to paraphrase Mackellar on page 1).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent characters and story.......1998-12-18

I am a big fan of Robert Louis Stevenson, and I think that "The Master of Ballantrae" is his best novel. It has interesting character studies and its exciting story is set in a great variety of locations. It has good adventure plus a very haunting quality to it, and is one of those books that I enjoy re-reading.
