Book Description
In this illustrated essay, Lars Muller traces the history of "Swiss Graphic Design" from the 30s to the 60s. Muller-Brockmann's posters have become world famous for their ability to convey information with great visual tension, a sense of drama, and an extreme economy of means. Muller-Brockmann created a body of work in which timeless principles of visual communication are inscribed.
Customer Reviews:
this is excellent!.......2001-03-07
A good introduction to Muller-Brockmanns work, the book takes us from his very early works to later exhibitions and poster design. It even mentions 'Grid Systems', which I am a firm disciple of. Graphic Design is a subject of which to have strong oppionions and Lars Muller has just that. I enjoyed his comments in the preface which were valid and sound. All in all an important walk through past design, which should stay contemparay for times to come.

Never too old for paper dolls.......2007-08-20
This fun book is all that it was cracked up to be. Written by Terry Taylor in a light-hearted, fun style,
it explores the various forms of paper dolls and the whimsical world of the child-at-heart. Well illustrated
with explicit instructions for even the klutz-- like me. Taylor's book will inspire you to try everything he
presents. And to draw from within yourself to create more. Have fun, you little cut-ups!!!
Now, back to my scissors and paper....
NOTE: This was supposed to be a 5-star rating. I'm new at this..... DUH.
paperdolls.......2007-02-20
Great book, I have recently begun creating and trading artdolls and ATC artdolls and this book is full of ideas and techniques. Also includes patterns for some paperdolls. I think this book is great for beginner crafters as well as those persons interested in paperdolls.
An inspiring, interesting book to own!.......2007-01-15
Honestly, I have not tried any of the art projects from this book yet, but I know that someday I will. However, that said, it is still a really cool book to have! I keep it on my coffee table, and find myself flipping through the pages quite often just for fun and enjoyment. It is a must for a paperdoll collector (like me), as well as for anyone interested in altered art and/or collage. Nice book to add to your collection!
. . . CREATE PAPER DOLLS WITH ' ATTITUDE ' . . . ?.......2006-10-20
Am I allowed to think of Terry Taylor's book as a "fun hodgepodge"? My spine usually stiffens when the noun "fun" is used as an adjective, but nowadays that probably proves what an antiquated & hopeless sense of humor I have.
O.K., maybe I am jealous? What unadulterated fun it would be, dragging out about 80-years-worth of ephemera & building chapters to share with other demented collectors. My mother cut paper dolls from fashions printed in copies of "Godey's Lady's Book" ( a Civil War era magazine bound into books). These were provided by her maiden aunts; now those genes seem to be showing up in great-granddaughters who are terribly clever at "concocting" paper dolls over a century later. Reviewer mcHAIKU suggests that crafty folks in each generation might also welcome an 'artful' bibliography!
Kids who grow up today without being overdosed with TV are the lucky ones. Their imaginations thrive & they don't clamor for store-bought "embellishments" either - they just scan images from their computers, or cut out the most amazing creatures & objects from slick magazine ads . . . or, better yet, create their own from an array of crayons, markers & color pencils. (These are made available by amazon.com in a great variety of departments: House & Garden, Tools & Hardware, Office products, Toys & Games!)
"Artful Paper Dolls" is a useful springboard for those not overly blessed with imagination. For me, its purchase was definitely an indulgence, and cleverly tempts me to take many detours - dragging out what should normally be boxed up to give away: Cracker Jack 'prizes' & milagros, old postcard & stamp collections, buttons, ribbons, lace & other 'furbelows' - you name it.
Terry Taylor sub-titled his book "new ways to play with a traditional form". I appreciate his being 'up front' as a male who grew up loving paper dolls. His other titles show his success at a variety of crafts, so why shouldn't he employ his ebullience and also encourage many amateurs to have fun? Tom Tierney's paper dolls of historical figures are well-researched & while the economy cannot support hundreds of creators of paper dolls, most of us could be adventuresome and create cards & dolls that radiate humor - the "attitude" I alluded to in the title of this review, and which I think Terry Taylor encourages.
LOVE THIS BOOK!!!.......2006-10-19
This book is both inspiring and practical. Many, many wonderful pictures to look at for inspiration and patterns for creating your own! I have already dog eared my pages!!
Book Description
A paper princess once lived happily with the little girl who made her. But now the girl has grown up and left the princess under a paperweight. It's safe there, but the paper princess longs to grow and change, too. The princess must choose: safety or unknown adventure? Though a cat's sharp claws, a baby's sticky mouth, and blustering winter storms threaten the princess as she makes her way, she never gives up hope. Finally, carried on a cloud of butterfly wings, she journeys to a summery land, where a little girl understands her anew with a tender love. Kleven's luminous collage art offers perfect visual storytelling for this many-faceted, transforming journey.

Great Book!!!.......2007-06-07
My child and I loved this book, It inspired her so much she wanted to make her own paper doll just like the paper princess! we did. Highly recommended!!!!
Wonderful interweaving of nature and fantasy.......2005-04-13
My children and I were enchanted by this book. We love the author's ability to blend imaginary elements -- talking paper dolls, toys and animals -- with real and inspiring facts from nature, namely the migration of Monarch butterflies. The passages which show the paper princess abandoned in the discarded Christmas tree, enduring the harsh winter, awakening in spring, and finally being rescued by the Monarchs "one late summer day...when the leaves are flying like tiny kites" are especially moving. This tale both feeds our imaginations and stimulates our awe for the animal kingdom. Sharing this beautiful and unique book would be a great way to introduce Monarchs in the classroom.
Wonderful and Inspiring!!.......2003-11-06
The Paper Princess Finds Her Way is an absolutely wonderful and inspiring book. Even though "It can be a hard world for small fragile things," the paper princess knows she must change because the world around her has changed. She boldly takes on the challenges of the hard world and finds adventure, beauty and newness. Elisa's writing is wonderfully illustrative; I could clearly imagine the cat who "smiled a sharp cat smile" or the butterflies that "travelled, a magic carpet of sunlit wings." The story made me laugh, smile and think about the beauty in life and the beauty of change. This book is not just for children. However, my eight year old was just as enthralled as I.
"Wait! I want to look at the picture," he urged, not wanting to be rushed before he read the page. The illustrations in The Paper Princess Finds Her Way are intimate and full of details that tell their own stories such as birthday parties or a child
cooking with her grandma. As with Elisa's other books, studying the pictures is much of the fun and I'd become absorbed in the small village or living room on the page. I highly recommend this book for children's libraries, home libraries and all elementary school classrooms.
Another Magical Kleven Tale.......2003-10-22
AT LAST! More adventures about the brave and friendly, soulful paper princess making her way from her (now grown up) creator to the hand of another artistic child in Mexico. What a wonderful antidote to the mass consumer society we live in today. It is definitely a story to cherish and the illustrations are beyond this world! Kleven's illustrations of the Monarch butterflies in flight are mystical and left me hoping for more. Hooray for our brave princess and may her own creator, Elisa Kleven, bless us with more delightful and heartfelt stories!!

A transformation for the deeply spiritual.......1998-07-30
This is a wonderful book of stories about those who have been curious and brave enough to search into their own souls and find lost parts of themselves. I read this book while taking a one week workshop on dollmaking and now I wish that I could go through the year long process discribed within these pages. You don't have to be interested in dolls to see the transformations that dollmaking can bring from an individual's own creativity. Great read with excellent photos of dolls created by artist and non-artist.
Book Description
Susan Crawford presented examples of inadvertent but blatant sexism to her daughter's school. The lukewarm response she received influenced her to research the topic on her own to learn ways she as a parent could have an impact. Finding mostly lengthy books geared toward educators, her research became the start of this book, whose key features include:
more tips than a parent could us in a year!
it doesn't exclude boys form the discussion
a short dip-in-and-out format
includes the solutions as well as the problems.

More Propaganda.......2007-09-16
I was issued this book in an education class while in college. If your child is attending public schools it behooves you to know how the teachers are being programmed by the universities. This book is feminist drivel and ridiculous to the point of hilarity. If you want to confuse your children by conditioning them to play in such a way opposite of their natures, and you are out of touch enough with the way children play together, and you want your boys to have long hair and wear skirts (why not? let's be equal!) and your girls to get a flat top, this book is definitely something to stock in your shelf next to your copy of The Communist Manifesto. On the other hand, if you want a good laugh with out of date philosophies, this book will still find a place on your bookshelf, right up there next to The Communist Manifesto.
bang bang out go the lights.......2005-09-11
A must read for parents. In an effort to stem the tide of pigeon holing our nation's children I have insisted that my daughter play with guns and toy soldiers. Oddly it did not take much prompting from me to get her brother to play with dolls and cosmetics. He has taken to it like a duck to water which concerned me at first but then I realize that's just my old ingrained gender bias talking.
Recently, much to my dismay, Sally (my daughter who now prefers to be called Sal) toy-pistol whipped her brother Francis when he made the unfortunate error of playing with her G.I. Joe. Luckily after Francis had a good cry and some chocolates he seems to have gotten over it.
Wonderful!.......2001-06-27
This book is a great tool to identify gender bias in any school! I've been substituting in my school district recently and with the tips I found in this book I found many examples of how girls are unconsciously mistreated. This book makes a great gift for parents, students, teachers, and anyone interested in education!
Excellent examples on how to address and avoid gender bias.......1999-10-03
This book presents the issue of gender bias in a very readable manner. I highly recommend this small, easy to read text for any parent, teacher or individual who has any contact with children. Wonderful examples of reframing available, good references and appendixes. Would make for a good gift for teachers or coaches. Very thought provoking.

A Good choice for your children........1998-04-16
As this book is a novelized version of the film Jingle All the Way, the English would not be difficult and the presentation is humourous.
The content is somehow similar to the film and of course, this book is preferred to children rather than adults because of its simple English and story structure.
As a Father or Mother of your children, you would not want them to see novels which are violent or sex-related. Therefore, this book is your choice.
Every child has their own expectation to Santa Claus and maybe , they will like this simple-family-based story!
For me, this book is quite interesting and simple enough for non-English-speakers like me. The Father(Arnold) is cute and 'interesting'. Also, the description phrases are good and if you are not a native speaker of English, you will find this book a good introduction to begin your reading of English books! ^_^

Must for any brother.......2005-02-21
As an older brother it is your duty to swear by the book, "Stamp them out before they multiply!" This is original, funny, and very characteristic of the litigation free 80's. I mean, "Wow!" Topics handled in this book were never for kids. Today this is on the TV all the time. I scanned some images, but some, I just can't put here. Not much text, the cartoons are a riot. I can't believe he said that, and that, and that...OMG. Chain-saw surgery, near-sighted rabbi, send it to San Diego w/an ear ring...unbelieveable. I'm thinking compulsive editiorial cartoonist, however the dedication page is true to the underlining theme of the book, 'Dedicated to Americans...who'll buy anything'. If you don't like it, grow up.
Wow this is great.......2004-04-02
Mad Mike is a friggen genius. This book is hilarious. I am going to invite this guy over my house for a seder!
FUNNIEST BOOK IN AMERICA.......2001-06-03
Mike Marine has written the funniest book in America, "101 Ways to Get Rid of a Lettuce Head Doll". While this book recieved major media coverage, distribution was spotty and it became difficult to find. But what a find it is! If you think these Cabbage Patch Dolls are ugly and commercially exploited, you will laugh you belly off reading this spoof. The drawings are endearingly sketched by a renowned Washington Post editorial cartoonish. They capture perfectly the tone of the funniest book I have ever read. It is so funny, I insist that every one that enters my house sit and read this and some are in tears - they laugh so hard. Destined to be a collectors item, get yourself this book and don't let anyone take it from your shelf - unless they want to read it. It may be dated, but the humor is fresh and timeless. Enjoy............
Laugh Your Head Off.......2000-05-07
Marine is a genius and great talent. Not only can he poke fun at those dumb dolls, but he lampoons cuurent society. This was great fun. Don't miss it.
Hilarious. Side-splitting funny.......1998-08-27
This is a great spoof of the Cabbage Patch Doll. It is a collectors issue. Loved every page!

Book Description
This book explains how to develop more effective risk communications using the Carnegie Mellon mental-model approach. Such communications are designed to contain, in readily usable form, the information that people need to make informed decisions about risks to health, safety, and the environment. The approach draws together methods from the natural and social sciences, providing a framework for interdisciplinary collaboration. It is demostrated with varied examples including electromagnetic fields, climate change, radon, and sexually transmitted diseases.

Practical and well grounded in the literature -- a must own.......2004-07-02
This book is a "must own" for anyone who is interested in conveying risk information to members of the public. It lays out a cohert framework -- and more or less step-by-step instructions -- for identifying what information will be of greatest value to members of a target audience. It is the most useful book I have found thus far to guide my efforts to communicate complex health information to members of various publics.
