Biodegradation of HD and Tetrytol Hydrolysates in a Pilot Scale Immobilized Cell Bioreactor
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423526457 |
Product Description
This is a EDGEWOOD CHEMICAL BIOLOGICAL CENTER ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A206693. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: To address public concerns over the safe destruction of the U.S. chemical weapon stockpile, the Assembled Chemical Weapons Assessment (ACWA) program identified neutralization followed by biodegradation as having potential for destroying the chemical agent and burster charge fills of chemical agent projectiles. This report describes the pilot scale study conducted by the authors at the U.S. Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC), APG, MD. This research builds upon the neutralizationBIODEGRADATION PROCESS DEVELOPED AT ECBC and expands that process to include the burster fills found in mustard (HD) agent projectiles. A 1000-gal immobilized cell bioreactor (ICB) system was used to demonstrate the ability of an activated sludge consortium to degrade the chemical constituents of the US Army's 105-mm chemical agent projectile. The study demonstrated the ability of the Water Hydrolysis of Energetic and Agent Technologies (WHEAT) and the ICB to degrade 99.999% of hydrolyzed HD and its schedule-two breakdown products. During the test period, the ICB system processed 16,896 lb of HD hydrolysate and 660 lb of tetrytol hydrolysate. During the system validation, HD hydrolysate and its breakdown products were degraded to below detectable limits in all system effluents. Through a three-step process, 50% of the effluent was recycled into the ICB. Liquid effluents were characterized as non-toxic by the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). The ICB, process, and study findings are presented.

Book Description
Cell immobilisation biotechnology is a multidisciplinary area, shown to have an important impact on many scientific subdisciplines, including biomedicine, pharmacology, cosmetics, food and agricultural sciences, beverage production, industrial and municipal waste treatment, analytical applications, and biologics production. The two volumes on Cell Immobilisation Biotechnology are the result of the editors' intention to collate the extensive and widespread information on fundamental aspects and applications of immobilisation/encapsulation biotechnology into a comprehensive reference work and to provide an overview of the most recent results and developments in this domain.-"Materials for cell immobilisation/encapsulation",
-"Methods and technologies for cell immobilisation/encapsulation",
-"Carrier characterisation and bioreactor design", and
-"Physiology of immobilised cells: techniques and mathematical modelling".
Audience: This volume is intended to cover the needs of, and to be the essential resource for, both the academic and industrial communities involved in the study of cell immobilisation biotechnology. A combination of biological and engineering/technology aspects is included to reach an even wider audience, such as specialists in biochemistry, microbiology, biology, medicine, chemical, biochemical and tissue engineering, who seek a broad view on cell immobilisation/encapsulation fundamentals and applications.
Reviews:
"It is now over 30 years since serious exploration and development of methods for immobilising cells began. This book fills that need more than adequately, providing information both for experts and for newcomers to the field, and should be available in the library of any institution involved in biotechnology." Chris Bucke in Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology, 81: 730 (2006)
"In summary, this book provides a rich expertise and knowledge on all aspects of cell immobilisation/encapsulation fundamentals. It presents a comprehensive up-to-date source of information for each scientist approaching this discipline."

The Bible for Organic Laboratory.......2000-09-13
Pavia's "Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques" might seem to be a water-down version of Vogel. Vogel is extremely well-written and detailed in laboratory tecniques such as chromatography, distillation, HPLC, crystallization, extraction, etc. A chapter is also devoted to discussion of solvents and reagents, which helps tremendously for separation experiments.
Vogel also discusses aliphatic, heterocyclic, and aromatic compounds and introduces spectroscopic methods. Vogel is recommended for advanced lab course that requires frequent modification of lab procedures and reference for chemists.

Techniques for Nuclear and Particle Physics Experiments: A How-to Approach
William R. Leo Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 3540572805 |
Book Description
This book treats the experimental techniques and instrumentation most often used in nuclear and particle physics experiments as well as in various other experiments. It provides useful results and formulae, technical know-how and informative details. This second edition has been revised; sections on Cherenkov radiation and radiation protection have been updated and extended. Thanks to the author's long teaching experience, the material is presented in a very practical, hands-on way making the book a useful text and laboratory companion for students and experienced scientists alike.Customer Reviews:
Concise overview for the nuclear experimentalist.......2000-08-23
Elaborate references are given for each section that make it possible for the reader to find additional descriptions rather easily. Additional insight on dosimetry and radiation damage and some remarks on statistics make this book an interesting alternative to G.F. Knoll's "Radiation detection and measurement".
The emphasis of Leo's approach is surely (a) on a concise overview rather than an in-depth discussion and (b) on nuclear spectroscopy (gamma and particle detection at some MeV or so) rather than medium and large-scale high-energy physics experiments. Widely used components of high-energy physics equipment are, however, presented, but additional literature might be needed.
One final remark to my fellow reviewer Fabio: One example for a "statistical process" is e.g. the number of electron-hole pairs created in the detection of a charged particle or gamma ray. This process is truely statistical, i.e. it does not depend on things that the experimentator has at hand. The intrinsic resolution of a high-purity Germanium detector with respect to a, say, 3 MeV gamma ray cannot be changed (at least to a large extent). Have a look into Leo's book if you don't believe me!
Quite deep overview, but statistics..........1998-11-27
Expecially good topics: ionization and scintillation detectors; photomultipliers. Lacks: calorimetres and Cerenkov counters! For these topics I suggest: 'Particle Detectors' (many auth.), Cambridge University Press.
Just one thing about statistics: you have always to substitute this sentence:
''... because of the statistical nature of the process...''
with
''...because of the uncertainties related to the process, we choose to treat it as statistical...'' OK, it's a bit longer; but are you sure that all advanced physicians know that Caos does not exist as a real entity? It's just a choice of the experimenter to supply lacks in understanding and measuring the process or to simplify it. If you don't believe so, I ask you: why do you make research? Let's talk about it.
