    Book Description

That molecular neurobiology has become a dominant part of neuroscience research can be credited to the discovery of inducible gene expression in the brain and spinal cord. This volume deals with genes, whose expression patterns in the vertebrate central nervous system were the first to be revealed and then the most extensively investigated over the last 15 years. Immediate early genes (IEG) and their protein products, especially those acting as regulators of transcription (inducible transcription factors, ITF) have proven to be very valuable tools in functional neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, as they are rapidly and transiently induced in specific neurons in response to various modes of stimulation. Thus, they have been used to map neuronal populations selectively responsive to a variety of conditions, such as sensory and learning experience, electrical stimulation of specific circuits, seizures, and neurodegeneration.

This single volume, written by the most prominent authors in the field, brings together for the first time information about the most widely studied IEG/ITF in a whole variety of phenomena of neuronal activation. It starts with a critical appraisal of the technologies employed for the studies on gene, protein, and transcription factor activity in the nervous system. Several chapters present exhaustive examples of expression patterns of the ITF in "vocal" avian brain, mammalian brain sensory regions, areas involved in regulation of circadian rhythms, and the spinal cord. The next parts cover functional and regular aspects of individual IEG/ITF expression: c-fos in learning and memory, c-jun and others in neuropathology and neuronal stress responses, Elk-1, egr family, and CREB in neuronal plasticity and learning.

This volume will be useful as a major reference on this topic. Furthermore, it attempts to unravel the seemingly overwhelming complexity of the phenomena of gene expression in the central nervous system.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, well written and comprehensive book.......1999-11-02

One of my main areas of research is polymer surface characterization and surface treatment. As Project Area Manager for Polymeric Materials at the Institute for Surface Chemistry in Stockholm, it was my job to be familiar with the literature in this area. During that period I read many books and this was one of my very favorites.

The book is well presented and easy to follow. It manages to present the subject in a comprehensive and interesting manner with just the right level of detail. The major characterization methods such as (ESCA (XPS) and SIMS are described as well as an unusually good coverage of the tricky subject of contact angle measurement. Similarly, the methods for modifying polymers such as corona, flame and plasma treatments, plus surface grafting are all covered in a clear manner. The author is obviously an expert on this subject. One particularly useful aspect was that the author considers the industrial aspects of the treatment methods. He mentions topics such as treatment and equipment cost, reproducibility and compares the relative merits of different treatment methods. In my experience, it is unusual to find a combination of a high scientific level and awareness of industrial considerations.

This is one of a handful of truly invaluable books in my personal collection, highly recommended.

In spite of the title, most of the articles in this book don't have to do with characterization or failure analysis -- they're just general articles on plastics from the Engineered Materials Handbook. Also, the articles (which date from the mid-1980s) don't seem to have been revised at all. I don't think there is any new content in this book.

ASM ought to warn people when they do this, especially given how much they charge for their books. My company bought this book for their library (which already had the Engineered Materials Handbook) and was very disappointed.

Fiber-optic networking, on both small and large scales, has lots of advantages over traditional wire and wireless networks. First, optical signals can travel enormous distances without the need for amplification. Second, optical networks provide enormous bandwidth that is hundreds of times larger than that of many other media. In Optical Networks, authors Ramaswami and Sivarajan explore the scientific concepts and engineering considerations behind light-based networks.

The authors begin with the physical phenomena that make optical networks possible. They cover characteristics of light in depth, with an eye toward optimizing light's ability to carry signals long distances. They progress to detailing the hardware that makes networks possible, including multiplexers, filters, amplifiers, transmitters, detectors, and switches. Generally, discussion is theoretical, rather than oriented toward any particular make and model of gear. The authors then cover various means of encoding information into light waves, paying attention to topics such as wavelength routing, network topology, and management.

Readers who are planning to put together an optical network may find that the book's case studies are the most interesting part of the text. The authors give examples of real-world networks that different companies have built, such as AT&T's Africa ONE and Alcatel's WDM Ring. They then analyze each system, picking out the strong and weak points of each.

This is an academic book, full of equations, graphs, and schematics. Don't expect to get a lot out of this book if you're wiring up your office's local area network (LAN). Optical Networks is appropriate if you work on big, high-capacity networks or if you want a glimpse of one possible future Internet infrastructure. --David Wall

                      Book Description

The authors have captured what is going on and what is going to be going on in this field in a completely up-to-date treatment unavailable elsewhere. I learned a lot from reading it expect that you will too.
From the Foreword by Paul E. Green, Research Fellow, Tellabs, Inc.
The tremendous growth of bandwidth-intensive services such as the World Wide Web demonstrates the increase in performance that applications will demand from future networks. To meet this demand, optical networks are being deployed and are emerging as the next generation of high-capacity, multi-protocol networks. Engineers in communications and fiber optics, networking professionals, and graduate students in networking courses will benefit from this book's unique coverage of the systems aspect of optical networks.

5 out of 5 stars Great book condition and shipping.......2006-11-10

The book is complete brand new and I got it very quickly after the order even with the free shipping service. In addition, the price is pretty good for the book with such a good condition.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent "Big Picture" book for students in optics.......2002-01-14

I got this book while working on my masters in electro-optics, and found that it completed the big picture of optical communications and how network components fit together which was lacking in my detailed graduate work. I especially recommend it to those with a background other than EE, as it fills in a lot of gaps that EE folks assume that others know.

It starts off pretty light and qualitative, then begins incorporating some equations and formulas to accompany the qualitative descriptions. It does not waist time deriving anything, nor will you find pages of just mathematical equations. It has references and problems at the end of each chapter for the more technical reader.

For non-technical readers, this book is not light reading, but if you are patient enough to breeze over certain sections of math, you will find plenty of useful qualitative descriptions that do not depend on a full understanding of the math. There are even large sections of the book with no math at all.

In short, this book offers an excellent bridge between quantitative and qualitative descriptions of optical communications and optical networks.

5 out of 5 stars Nicely Balanced Introduction.......2001-10-04

This is surely the best book on fiber optics networks. It's that rarity - an accessible academic book which doesn't ignore the practical side of things either. Therefore it is useful both as a textbook as well as a refresher for professionals.

We studied the draft of this book in a course in the Indian Institute of Science in 1997 conducted by Professor K.N.Sivarajan, one of authors and a world-wide authority on the subject. It was an enjoyable course, and we felt that we were truly studying the latest technology - in fact, even some of the future technology, since the book included architectures that hadn't been built yet(ie conceptual architectures)!

Later on, as a professional systems engineer i worked in a team writing firmware for a SONET based product, and this book was much admired by my colleagues as well.

This book has all the basic scientific and engineering concepts and considerations involved in understanding and designing fiber optic networks. The treatment is mathematical and the writing is lucid.

Towards the later part, there are detailed case studies that will be truly helpful for the professionals designing their own networks.

Since it was writen almost 4 years ago, it cannot have all the latest information is this rapidly expanding field - but for a sound, balanced introduction to the fundamentals, this is your book.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Optical Networks.......2000-06-28

Over the past year, I've been involved in a project which required me to learn a lot more about optical networks. In addition to reading the papers from ANSI T1X1 and the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF), I purchased several books on the subject, including Siller and Shafi's "SONET/SDH," Goralski's "SONET" and Laches' "Fiber Optic Communications". Ramaswami and Sivarajan's book "Optical Networks" is definitely the best of the group. "SONET/SDH" gives a good overview, but you need to already know something about SONET in order to understand it. Goralski's "SONET" is too basic, while "Fiber Optic Communications" is too theoretical. "Optical Networks" is "just right" (to quote a famous young lady's comments about a baby bear's porridge). Whenever I need to know something about optical networks, this is the book I turn to. The only problem is that the field of optical networks is moving quite fast right now and this book provides a snapshot of the 1997-1998 timeframe. I wish the authors would put up a web site discussing some of the recent activity in the field, but I suppose it's a bit much to ask them to devote their lives to the book. All in all, if you want an excellent introduction to optical networks, this is the book for you.

I purchased this book, "Introduction to Fiber Optics" by Crisp and "Understanding Fiber Optics" by Hecht to get up to speed on the technology. I work in finance, and am not an engineer. I found this book to be the most clear of the three, and by far the easiest to understand. This book had better diagrams and used better analogies to explain the technology than did the other two books.

The book was laid out logically, and did a good job of building on knowledge explained in previous chapters. There were one page summaries at the tale of each chapter, which were helpful in allowing you to either skip or skim the text. The glossary at the end of the book was especially useful, as was the end chapter on future trends within the industry. The book was a quick read, and once I had finished it I felt comfortable engaging in a discussion with people much more accomplished in the field than myself.
