Book Description
Vander, Sherman, and Luciano continue their successful and pioneering approach, teaching students the importance of mechanisms and regulation, so that they begin to think in terms of processes and sequences, rather than simply memorizing the information. Human Physiology presents fundamental principles and facts of human physiology in a format that is suitable for undergraduate students.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent detail and depth........2002-08-31
I found this book to be invaluable for learning physiology. It was in-depth and has excellent illustrations. A must-have for the physiology student.
Inadequate.......2002-03-29
The book is an easy read enough for an introductory text, but the details for many chapters are really inadequate.
Not adequate in GI.......2002-03-05
This text is absolutely inadequate in the gastrointestinal physiology area for the level it proposes to teach. They really need to get someone who understands this area to help them out.
...........2001-05-07
This book is useless for learning physiology. The text is too misleading and confusing, the diagrams spin you around in a tangled web, and the whole book is shoddy and unprofessional looking. ....
Best Physiology Textbook.......2000-08-24
I loved this textbook. The pictures are very in-depth and the writing flows better than most medical texts. The cost is too high but so are all textbooks these days.

Her descriptive writing style, carefully constructed pedagogy, and accent on key terms and concepts provides students with a firm grasp on how their bodies function. In her twenty-year career with McGraw-Hill, she has written an impressive collection of textbooks including Inquiry into Life, tenth edition, Human Biology, seventh edition, and Understanding Human Anatomy and Physiology, third edition. Throughout the years, her goal remains the same-"to give students what they need to best understand biology."
This text is color customizable so you can create a text that fits your course perfectly.
Customer Reviews:
Yes, attack creationism!.......2006-06-08
"A Reader" wrote, "Good book, but attack on special creation unneccessary". I couldn't disagree more. Putting creationism in its correct place is precisely what good science should do. Part of the job of science is defeating old myths and faith-based means of "explanation" and replacing them with real science. So not only should evolution be taught but creationism should be explicitly mentioned by name and refuted. Science is a process and the best way to show that is to illustrate how it got to where it is today. That means the course of thought leading to today's science must be a part of the scenario. Thus, creationism should be shown wrong and refuted. After all, any astronomy course will show the roots of astronomy in the pre-science ideas that preceded it. Similarly a chemistry course must show how modern chemistry emerged from its precedents such as alchemy.
And that is what this book does. To call for any other approach would clearly be to call for special treatment for creationism. And this would be a giveaway as to the motivations of the person calling for such special treatment.
Great for Indiependent Learning.......2003-01-23
I used this text for a course that I took from Cal Berkeley Extension - online. That is an internet course. I am considering a career change from physical sciences to biotech and need to come up to speed rapidly.
The course covered only the first 2 units (first 17 chapters) so I will only speak to that. This text, with CD ROM (2) and internet learning center is GREAT! Looking at the entire package this is a great way to learn biology. The material covered in those first 17 chapters are exactly what one needs to know - elementary biochem; cell structure; genetics; gene expression; biotech. The illustrations are great and consistent (eg., phosphate groups are always orange-yellow) throughout the text. Actually, I would say that it is about the best illustrated text I have ever seen in my life. The on-line quizes (about 64 questions/chapter) let you know if you have really mastered the material or not. Independent questions at the end of every chapter all have answers in the appendix - so again you can check your understanding. The web site has shockwave art match the parts of the cell to the labels all as part of a package to independently learn biology.
I would say it would be helpful to have a year of college chemistry before plunging into this course - but the chemistry is not too sophisticated. The focus is on essentials - but with understanding. For people considering a switch into biology and want to study independently, I reccomend this book highly. I do not easily give 5 stars - but this book earns it.
Good book, but attack on special creation unneccessary.......2002-07-27
I really liked the 6th edition of this text, which I used for both semesters of General Biology. The illustrations were clear and I think Mader had a clear grasp of the concepts of biology. However, as a molecular biology major and as a person who has seen no evidence that macroevolution has occurred, I object to her characterization of creationism as unscientific. Mader is bold enough to actually state in Chapter 1 (in a connecting concepts box)"When faith is involved, a hypothesis cannont be tested in a purely objective way." She neglects to consider the exorbinant amount of faith it takes to believe in macroevolution. This is a theory which in all actuality is untestable. Furthermore, her statement which was quoted above would be considered by many to be "bad science"! She makes no reference to any studies which support her hypothesis. And I don't believe I've ever heard of any. In the fields of genetics and molecular biology, as we come to understand the complexity of living organisms, the theory of evolution just becomes more and more untenable. It's fine if Dr. Mader believes in evolution. That's her choice. But to go out of her way to rip the growing number of scientists who disagree with her was gratuitous and mean-spirited. This caused me to question HER objectivity throughout the rest of the book.

Book Description
We've taken a close look at Concepts in Biology and have made some major improvements to the ninth edition. We've added a free Essential Study Partner CD-ROM with every book. And when you open Concepts in Biology one of the first things you'll notice is its compelling new look. We've improved the layout and design and added lots of new or revised art. Within the chapters you'll find the trademark of these two authors remains as it has in the past: to provide a straightforward, concise, concepts-oriented text that gets to the heart of biological principles and keeps technical terminology to a minimum. Through each edition, Concepts in Biology has consistently allayed science anxiety by presenting ideas in a succinct, straightforward manner.

Concepts in Biology 12th edition by Eldon Enger.......2007-02-17
This is a very well written and easy to understand book. It is very similar to
Biology: Concepts & Connections with Student CD-ROM (5th Edition)
in content but it has clearer pictures in my opinion. What this one is not, it is not the 'lab manual' even though its reffered to it as such because it does not contain the experiment excercises the companion book by the same title contains. This is just a paperback textbook.

Easy reading.......2003-12-10
I found this book to be a very easy read. It has great photos and diagrams which illustrate the different concepts. I used the CD rom quite a lot. It has short video clips and tests which are useful.
Very easy read.......2003-05-11
This book was very easy to read, I read the whole thing in a little over a week. Highly reccommended.
If your course requires it, nothing you can do.......2002-10-24
I had to use this textbook for a class, which you probably do to. So you probably have to buy this one. It was okay, not hard to read, but I won't be keeping it as a reference work. The authors definitely have an agenda, promoting certain kinds of nutrition over others with very little reasoning, also seems to act like a lot of alternative medicine couldn't possible work even when there are studies to the contrary. I guess it handles the rudiments of biology okay. I will be selling this when I'm finished with this semester.
Oh, and there appears to be both a hardcover and a paperback. I bought the paperback used, and it seems to have matched perfectly with the hardcover. Never even used the CD.

Book Description
The best-selling text emphasizes the relationships of humans to other living things. Human Biology remains user friendly; relevancy and pedagogy are among its strengths. Human Biology is suitable for use in one-semester biology courses that emphasize human physiology and the role that humans play in the biosphere. The application of biological principles to practical human concerns is now widely accepted as a suitable approach to the study of biology because it fulfills a great need. Human beings are frequently called upon to make decisions about their bodies and their environment. Wise decisions require adequate knowledge. In this edition, as in previous editions, each chapter presents the topic clearly, simply, and distinctly so that students will feel capable of achieving an adult level of understanding. Detailed, high-level scientific data and terminology are not included because Dr. Mader believes that true knowledge consists of working concepts rather than technical facility. Students and instructors alike will find the text stimulating and a pleasure to read and study, especially since the illustration program is outstanding and there are many spectacular four-color illustrations that integrate art with micrographs.

Customer Reviews:
Decent.......2006-01-09
This book is not nearly as comprehensive or thorough as Campbell's Biology, but it does do an ok job with the explanations. The book has a lot of charts that do a good job of summarizing the material, which is a feature the earlier editions of Campbell's lack. Some of the illustrations are as good as Campbell's, but I have noticed some inaccuracies in a couple of the illustrations, even though I have the fourth edition. This is not so good for Intro Students who don't know the difference yet. It also places too much emphasis on Linnean terminology (class, phylum, genus, etc), and not enough on cladistics/phylogenetics (which biologists use preferentially now).
The study guide questions at the end of each chapter aren't very good. They swing wildly in scope, with one question asking minutiae not covered very well in the preceding chapter, the next asking about broad concepts, and some big take-home points missed entirely.
There's also not many practical differences between the 4th and 5th editions. If you have to get it, buy a 4th edition and save yourself a lot of cash. If you don't have to get it, buy Campbell's Biology (5th, 6th, or 7th edition is fine) instead.
Does not explain concepts well.......2003-06-26
I used this book for 2 semesters of introductory biology in college. After the first month, I became frustrated with the poor explanations. I asked a few friends and they recommended Biology by Campbell. What a lifesaver!
I also continued to used this book and also found a number of errors in the pictures. This cost me a few points on tests and quizzes, so this added to my low opinion of this book. I also became hesitant to trust what it was telling me, particularly when there were differences between Campbell and this book.
It has a nice layout, and it breaks topics into meaningful chunks; the explanations were okay most times and simply inadequate too frequently for me. On a scale of 1 to 10, this book is about a 3 or 4 and Campbell is a 9. But reading Campbell also takes more time and effort.

Book Description
George Johnson writes in an informal, friendly way, to engage as well as to teach. The focus of the book is on the biology each student ought to know to live as an informed citizen in the twenty-first century. Dr. Johnson, at every stage, addresses ideas and concepts, rather than detailed information, trying to teach "how" things work and "why" things happen the way they do rather than merely naming parts or giving definitions.Broader Treatment. The second edition contains 120 pages of new material, much of it added to give a broader biological perspective to the treatment of animals.Modular Approach. Each chapter is broken into discrete conceptual units, each a learning module designed to teach that idea. This learning architecture reveals the underlying conceptual organization of the chapter to the student in a powerful yet friendly way.Essential Study Partner CD-ROM. This interactive, tutorial CD-ROM supports and enhances the material presented in The Living World and is packaged FREE with every text.

Book Description
Recent advances in the study of dynamical systems have revolutionized the way that classical mechanics is taught and understood. This new and comprehensive textbook provides a complete description of this fundamental branch of physics. The authors cover all the material that one would expect to find in a standard graduate course: Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics, canonical transformations, the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, perturbation methods, and rigid bodies. They also deal with more advanced topics such as the relativistic Kepler problem, Liouville and Darboux theorems, and inverse and chaotic scattering. A key feature of the book is the early introduction of geometric (differential manifold) ideas, as well as detailed treatment of topics in nonlinear dynamics (such as the KAM theorem) and continuum dynamics (including solitons). Over 200 homework exercises are included. It will be an ideal textbook for graduate students of physics, applied mathematics, theoretical chemistry, and engineering, as well as a useful reference for researchers in these fields. A solutions manual is available exclusively for instructors.
Customer Reviews:
A great text.......2007-08-28
As some readers noted and others found to their frustration, this is an advanced text. Familiarity with mechanics, tensor notation, and similar are helpful to get the most out of this text. That said, it is a coherent exposition of classical mechanics in a modern light and will help the student develop a more advanced outlook on mechanics problems. I used it to study for my PhD qualifying examination.
Excellent book.......2007-02-08
This is a fantastic book, but one will need some background in differential geometry, calculus of variation and mechanics to truely appreciate it.
Excellent Text.......2006-10-27
This book provides a very easy to read introduction to the ***geometry of physics*** in the setting of mechanics. Most of the explanations that discuss manifolds are very easy to grasp and the level of the book is sufficient to take one into a much deeper understanding of mechanics and physics in general. No book is perfect (even the so called classics) and there are a few minor errors but the big picture is clear. If you are looking for a really good text that will give you another perspective on mechanics then I highly recommend this text. Also note that I have had very good durability with my copy of the paper-back text. It has endured about 7 years of heavy use and is essentially in perfect condition.
Poorly written and bound.......2006-10-05
If this book is not required for your course, do not waste your money on it. Though it covers more than Goldstein, it does so quite poorly. You will learn more from two pages in Goldstein than an entire chapter in this book. The writing is unclear and the coverage of topology is so scant that its appearance is more of a hinderance to understanding than an aid. Furthermore, the book was so poorly bound that it started to fall apart one semester into the course.
Even if you like this approach, do not buy this edition.......2005-10-06
This book is, to say the least, okay. Yes, other reviewers are right when they say it's much better than Marion & Thornton. But Marion & Thornton, I think, is geared toward a less sophisticated audience, whereas this book is geared toward graduate students and beyond. It is written essentially at the level of Goldstein, but offers more insights into Topology. Goldstein hardly mentions topology.
So, because of this, one would think that Jose and Saletan would be better suited for students of theoretical and mathematical physics. But it's not. Jose and Saletan's excursions into geometry and topology are mediocre, at best. They leave out enough details that a real book on differential topology for physicists is required to gain any insight or intuition on the subject. Their transitions from pure physics to these mathematical subjects are clumsy and contrived, and they do not reveal anything that's too much more profound than if they hadn't brought up the subject at all.
And in comparing, on a purely physical level, this book to the book that sets the standard for classical mechanics, Goldstein, Jose pales in comparision. Goldstein keeps the reader fixed on a physical goal, but Jose and Saletan introduce unnecessarily complicated notation at times, and introduce ideas and concepts in a way that seems to defy logic.
And on top of all this, the paperback edition fell apart on me after less than a month of use. Some of the other students in my class who weren't as careful with their books as used them more heavily could even make it last 2 weeks before the pages were falling out of the cover.
So in summary, if you like books that cover a smattering of topics with no real rhyme or reason, or you need a good reference on classical mechanics and some of the more formal mathematics involved, then this is the book for you. But if you buy it, definitely don't buy this edition, at least if you want it to last.
