          Book Description

Semiclassical Physics explores a way of doing quantum mechanics using a simplified path-integral formalism, with a focus on the classical motion of the particle. This book attempts to convey to the reader that semiclassical physics can be fun, as well as useful for understanding quantum fluctuations in interacting many-body systems. The text is addressed to graduate students with a basic knowledge of classical and quantum mechanics, and to scientists with an interest in semiclassical methods. The book's approach is informal, guided largely by simple solvable models and by practical applications to real physical phenomena. The new, paperback edition includes corrections to misprints, errors, unclear formulations, and some inconsistencies of notation, as well as the addition of recent references that are of direct relevance to the examples in the book. A new section on Bose-Einstein condensation in a harmonic trap has been added in the context of the Thomas-Fermi model.

            Book Description

This book presents most of the techniques used in the microlocal treatment of semiclassical problems coming from quantum physics. Both the standard C8 pseudodifferential calculus and the analytic microlocal analysis is developed, in a context which remains intentionally global so that only the relevant difficulties of the theory are encountered. The originality lies in the fact that the main features of analytic microlocal analysis are derived from a single and elementary a priori estimate. Various exercises illustrate the chief results of each chapter while introducing the reader to further developments of the theory. This book is aimed at non-specialists of the subject and the only required prerequisite is a basic knowledge of the theory of distributions.

            Book Description

Critical effects in semiclassical light scattering, in which the standard approximations break down, are associated with forward peaking, rainbows, glories, orbiting, and resonances. Besides giving rise to beautiful optical effects in the atmosphere, critical effects have important applications in many areas of physics. Their interpretation and accurate treatment, however, are difficult. This book deals with the theory of these critical effects. After a preliminary chapter posing the problem of critical effects, the next three chapters on coronae, rainbows, and glories, are written to be accessible to a broader audience of physicists. The main part of the book then describes the results obtained from the application of complex angular momentum techniques to scattering by homogeneous spheres. These techniques lead to practically usable asymptotic approximations, and to new physical insights into critical effects. A new conceptual picture of diffraction, regarded as a tunnelling effect, emerges. The final two chapters contain brief descriptions of applications to a broad range of fields including linear and nonlinear optics, radiative transfer, astronomy, acoustics, seismology, atomic, nuclear, and particle physics. This book intends to convey the basic concepts and physical interpretations that emerge from the new approach, rather than the complete formalism.

I have studied Physics with the Nussenzveig's collection "Física Básica" (just avaiable in Brazil) and I can say he is a very good Physics Teacher, and better, a hardline Physics Teacher! His book on diffaction would not be different, and I think who wants to know what matters about diffraction should read this book!

              Book Description

This established text and reference contains an advanced presentation of quantum mechanics adapted to the requirements of modern atomic physics. It includes topics of great current interest such as semiclassical theory, chaos and Bose-Einstein condensation in atomic gases. The third edition of Theoretical Atomic Physics extends the successful second edition with a detailed treatment of the wave motion of atoms near the anticlassical or extreme quantum regime, and it also contains an introduction to some aspects of atom optics that are relevant for current and future experiments involving ultra-cold atoms. Various problems are included together with complete solutions. Because it has more emphasis on theory, this book enables the reader to appreciate the fundamental assumptions underlying standard theoretical constructs and to embark on independent research projects.

                Book Description

In the last two decades remarkable progress has been made in understanding and describing tunneling processes in complex systems in terms of classical trajectories. This book introduces recent concepts and achievements with particular emphasis on a dynamical formulation and relations to specific systems in mesoscopic, molecular, atomic and nuclear physics. Advanced imaginary time techniques, e.g. for decay rates and tunnel splittings, are discussed in the first part. The second part covers current developments for wave-packet tunneling in real-time, and the third part describes thermodynamical and nonequilibrium approaches for barrier transmission in dissipative systems.

                  Book Description

Separation of scales plays a fundamental role in the understanding of the dynamical behaviour of complex systems in physics and other natural sciences. A prominent example is the Born-Oppenheimer approximation in molecular dynamics. This book focuses on a recent approach to adiabatic perturbation theory, which emphasizes the role of effective equations of motion and the separation of the adiabatic limit from the semiclassical limit.

A detailed introduction gives an overview of the subject and makes the later chapters accessible also to readers less familiar with the material. Although the general mathematical theory based on pseudodifferential calculus is presented in detail, there is an emphasis on concrete and relevant examples from physics. Applications range from molecular dynamics to the dynamics of electrons in a crystal and from the quantum mechanics of partially confined systems to Dirac particles and nonrelativistic QED.

                    Book Description

In this book, a number of the world's leading researchers in quantum, classical and atomic physics cooperate to present an up-to-date account of the recent progress in the field. The first part highlights the latest advances in semiclassical theory, whilst the second one is devoted to applications to atomic systems. The authors present the material in pedagogical form to make it easy reading for non-specialists, too. Among the topics treated, the reader will find a new quasiclassical quantization scheme for Hamiltonian dynamics, an application of the semiclassical formalism to photodissociation of small molecules and to the Lorentz gas and discussions of tunneling corrections. Furthermore, one finds papers on chaotic ionization, on the behaviour of hydrogen atoms in external fields, e.g. magnetic or microwave fields.

                        Book Description

The first Summer School of Analysis and Mathematical Physics of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (Cuernavaca) offered graduate and advanced undergraduate students courses on modern topics in the overlap between analysis and physics. This volume contains the expanded notes from the lectures by Brian Hall, Alejandro Uribe, and David Borthwick. The articles introduce readers to mathematical methods of classical and quantum mechanics and the link between these two theories: quantization and semiclassical analysis. Hall writes about holomorphic methods in analysis and mathematical physics and includes exercises. Uribe's lectures covered trace formulae, in particular asymptotic behavior and the relationship between the asymptotics and the geometric properties of the classical system. Borthwick presents an introduction to Kähler quantization, including the moment map, the orbit method, and symmetry and reduction. The exposition in the entire volume is geared to introducing graduate students with a basic knowledge of mathematics into areas of active research.

                            Book Description

Beloved juvenile fiction writer and author of sensational thrillers, Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) was also an ardent champion of reform movements in nineteenth-century America. Inspired by her parents' zeal for the reforms of their day and influenced by a network of other New Englanders determined to remedy the many ills in American society, the spinster Scheherazade from Concord, Massachusetts, was a firm and convincing advocate in advancing measures extending from domestic reform and alternative medicine, to education and communal society, to antislavery and egalitarianism, to feminism and suffrage.

This innovative compilation sheds new light on Alcott's commitment to ameliorating oppressive conditions of all kinds. Madeleine B. Stern pairs selections from the writings of reform leaders with excerpts from Alcott's letters, fiction, and nonfiction works to demonstrate that Alcott was aware of and often moved by the words of other reformers. Stern illuminates the connections between Alcott and the printed sources that filtered into her life and work, and shows how she wove reformist themes throughout her writings, prodding her readers to right the wrongs at home and in the nation.
