Book Description
With riches from New World conquests pouring into Seville in the 16th to 18th centuries, the Spanish nobility of Andalucia built exquisite houses and palaces. This book chronicles the finest of these treasures, traces the development of a distinctive regional style of architecture and decoration- the beautiful tiles, dramatic staircases and doorways, columns, and arches, and the cool exterior patios that are so integral to Spanish building. Many of these homes are miraculously preserved with their authentic interiors intact, and a fascinating text tells the stories of the families that built and lived in them.

Great.......2003-10-28
This book is more like reading an illustrated autobiography than a how to book. This is fine with me. Chamberlain is a master of the traditional British style landscape. With a limited palette of earth tones and simplified brush work he creates muted, moody landscapes that to my mind are more compelling than the brightly colored items in most watercolor instruction books. Its a matter of taste, but Chamberlain's work really speaks to me. He's more concerned with communicating the beauty of the world than his own artistic cleverness.
beautiful style.......2003-06-30
I like this book for the illustrations. Chamberlain has a fresh spontaneous style and draws well. The paintings illustrated are representational, easy to like, well composed and very attractive. I haven't paid much attention to the text...no criticism, I'm just burnt out long ago on how-to painting books. But this is worth while for the quality of the paintings.
Very inspiring.......2002-01-08
This is an awesome book. It has inspired me to paint on-site more and has given me some invaluable additions to my palette. His style is attractive to me because it's more masculine and similar to my own. His narrative is very inspirational and instructive. Reading it and viewing his work will get you out painting every time.
An enormously attractive plein-aire painter........1999-11-02
Trevor Chamberlain is one of the most authentic outdoor painters working today. He is a "painter's painter," and anyone who has ever picked up a brush wishes in his or her heart of hearts that Chamberlain's style could be his or her own. His books make this dream almost seem a reality.

Very useful.......2006-10-12
This book presents some fine instruction and some fine illustrative paintings. The best part, for me, is that Ms. Lewis shows many color mixtures used to achieve many of the specific colors shown in her paintings. You can learn from this book.

Roy Lang's "sea and sky in oils".......2007-09-19
I have always been confused when trying to paint sand. A wonderful example of this is explained.
The waves in this book are painted and a great explaination follows.
Sea and skies made easy!.......2007-09-12
I'm a self taught weekend painter when the mood strikes, so trying to figure out some aspects of painting techniques has come after many hours of trial and error; as it should be. Self discovery in painting is one of the most rewarding of experiences a painter can have. All those "I get it experiences" when you see something come together for the first time!
I've never done a seascape before and I releasied the need for some help in the matter! This book looks as though it can do the trick and am looking forward to trying Mr. Lang's techniques!
After finding this on Amazon I looked for it locally at art stores and found it. As soon as I opened the book and leafed thru the pages I felt there is more than enough info and help for me to give it a go and try it for myself! Perhaps I'll update this review AFTER I finish a seascape!

Customer Reviews:
Completely and Utterly Beautiful and Outstanding--NOT just for beginners.......2007-09-12
This book is wonderful and beautiful. I am somewhat a beginner watercolorist, and I disagree about the previous remark that this book is only for beginners---I believe this book reaches way beyond the beginning steps of learning watercolor painting.
Mr. Robinson begins the book with the usual materials and techniques chapter. He gives good demonstrations of various techniques with brush strokes, wet on wet, chops, reflections stroke, masking out, lifting, and sandpaper edges to name a few.
Chapter 2 is Painting on Location. Mr. Robinson explains how he studied the sea using a movie camera so he could understand exactly what happens when a wave reaches a certain point. Then, planning the painting is demonstrated. Each page is filled with well-designed photos and sketches, and are explained in a well-designed manner that make it enjoyable to read. Values of the water and pencil sketches of rocks are explained along with color sketching. Ten-minute sketches are compared to 20-minute sketches, and a step-by step demonstration is given with full explaination s under each picture.
Chapter 3 is about the Colors of the Sea, and how Mr. Robinson selects his pallet, comparing, for example manganese blue vs. cerulean blue vs. ultramarine blue for water and qualities that factor into using them. Then greens and combined colors for water are discussed....Charging and selection of colors for charging and overlaid lines are demonstrated in a well-organized manner. Then Mr. Robinson explains how he charges the water and rocks along with illustrations to accompany each section.
Chapter 4 is The Importance of Atmosphere. I don't consider this information something a beginner would be concentrating on--I think this book is definitely for all levels of watercolorists. Perspective is explained, and how Mr. Robinson chooses different colors to achieve different atmosphere--warm grays vs. cool, clear day vs rain, fog, incoming fog---each with a beautiful illustration and explanation. Casting shadows, and fog with a sun glow are demonstrated.
Chapter 5--The Importance of Sunlight--"the influence of sunlight on color, sunlight and shadow colors, warm sunlight, high noon light, low horizon sunlight are explained, again, with a beautiful painting to illustrate, but with the purpose of teaching and not just to "show off" the authors beautiful works.....Then, practice steps are given with step one, step two, etc. each illustrated and fully explained....Next, bright light--side light, down lighting, front lighting, back lighting, spot lighting, casting shadows, sun rays are all shown and explained.
Chapter 6 is Composition for Balance and Harmony where he explains spirit lines, lines of motion, tranquil lines, opposing lines, moving lines, rising lines, downward lines---not something a beginner would pay that much attention to....Values and focal points are demonstrated--each with a small painting
Chapter 7---Water As a Reflecting Surface-- light paths, reflecting bluffs, mirror images, extended reflection, broken reflections, light bounce, etc--each separately illustrated. Reflected wave foam, shallow water reflections, sparkles, glare, etc..
Chapter 8 is Skies--sundown, cloud glow, motion drama, etc... Next a Demonstration step-by-step is given beginning with a line sketch, value sketch, choice of pallet colors and then step-by-step explanations are given. Easy to follow--excellent instruction.
Chapter 9 --Waves and Breakers--anatomy of swells, transfer of energy, swells with ripples, whitecaps, etc.--all covered and illustrated along with sketches to explain more if needed. Next, cloud and cloud reflections, breaker anatomy, light through the wave, different views of the wave, collapsed wave, dark-to-light wave....Then, another step-by-step demonstration, again well organized, illustrated, and explained.
Chapter 10--The Forms and Shapes of Foam--foam bursts--how to achieve the effect--
The rest of the chapters include Forms and Shapes of Rocks, Beaches, Harbors and Coastlines---each with more demonstrations.
Photo references are included in the back of the book, along with a gallery of Mr. Robinson's stunning work.
This book is exceptional and well above your average watercolor instruction book. The author holds you spellbound and has some interesting little stories to tell along the way. It is a truly wonderful and beautiful book, as well as being well organized and explained.
OK for beginners - mediocre, at best, for artists!.......2005-10-12
I would recommend this book for beginners only! The special effects, referred to in the title, are basic watercolor techniques. The book itself is not very creative in format, content nor presentation .
Outstanding Book on Painting Water in Watercolor.......2005-06-08
As with his other books, Mr. Robinson clearly and plainly explains steps in the process of achieving a wonderful watercolor painting. The step-by-step photographs and full explanations of techniques are outstanding in terms of instruction and giving pointers to achieving a better painting. I would recommend this book for painters at all levels. Many of the techniques apply to other mediums as well. For anyone interested in painting water this is a must have.
If you really want to learn .......2005-04-22
Mr Robinson obviously has two outstanding gifts: painting and teaching! A rare combination. And he knows all about the subject. Wether you are a beginner or an experienced painter I am sure you can benefit from this book. I absolutely love it! Unlike many other painting instructors he is not exhibiting his own paintings but teaching you how to get into the world of painting sea.

Painting Nightscapes with Artificial Light
ASIN: 8495323346 |
Book Description
The instructional guides in this series help the beginning artist find the answers that the majority of painting books fail to provide: how to create and avoid the little details that can either destroy a painting or make it into a masterpiece. Included are techniques for painting reflections on water in the style of the great masters, for creating textures, for putting life and movement into a work, and for beginning a long and fruitful relationship between the amateur artist and the world of art.
Atmospheric phenomena, as real and varied as weather itself, are often tricky elements of a painting for the beginning artist to tackle. Offering a wealth of techniques for representing such natural occurrences as sunsets and dawns, this book also provides instruction for interpreting landscapes to suggest depth and distance, for capturing the subtle variations of a climatic change, and for portraying the effects of fog, rain, frost, and heat.

Customer Reviews:
Above the amateur level........2005-03-20
I bough this book basically for the 5'x5'18% Gray Card which comes along with this book. I have used the card many times unfortunatley I can't say the same for the book itself.
The book may be handy for its small size which you can cary in a 1 body SLR bag.
Lots of technical jargons, no amateur would grasp this book in a single or even triple reading. There are some information that is very usefull, e.g the f stops that could be used for different lighting, film types and all the information you can possible get e.g which film speed has grain, film reactions to different light, which light is best for the type of film, purposes for film. The only thing is you should not expect any other information on different brands, I mean it is a Kodak Book.
There is also information to help you select the right or close to the correct setting for the camera but it's only suggestions to get the correct settings.
This is a good book for the advance and professional photographer but I wouldn't sugect novices to purchase just yet untill they are comfortable with their craft.
Chockful of the best info for the serious Amatuer.......2005-01-12
An excellent reference for photographers above the "point and shoot" group --and could prove very helpful to this large group of photographers also. It should be in camera bag. This is NOT a text book but it has the needed information that you require to make a good photograph when you snap the shutter.
Some topics might be over your head today, but if you are really serious about being an above the average snapshooter and want to become a good photographer this is for you. You will grow into it and find The Kodak Professional Photoguide is indispensible. The chapters are tabbed and will take you quickly to reference materials on every techinical subject concerning picture-taking to which you would need to refer.
IF you are not into film but go digital, it will not be as useful but has some good information on exposure (existing light, metering in artificial light, lighting ratios for portraits, etc). Information you can adapt for using filters, flash and taking care of your camera lenses. For instance camera lenses are different than eyeglass lenses and can be damaged by using eyeglass cleaning techniques.
I use both digital and film and find this book is indispensible for for the serious amateur photographer using either digital cameras or film cameras.
As for the Pro, I am not one and cannot make any comments concerning this book there, except to say many of the pros that I have met have this book with them in the studio and many carry it in their bags in the field.
And it can be bought "used" for half the price. The "used" copy that I purchased was in fact just as good as "brand new".
The word "Professional" is key.......2002-11-16
I wasn't paying close enough attention when I purchased this guide - it's definitely above my level. I'm sure it's chock-full of useful tidbits for professional or pro-am photographers, but I looked through it with a growing sense of frustration, confusion and futility.
There are sections on film types, film care and storage, exposure, filters, flash, lenses, and other important items, but the level of information presented is rather advanced. There are multiple graphs, calculators, and spinning dials to compute correct values. An 18% gray card in the back is very useful for metering, but not worth the price of the whole book, of course.
The size of Kodak's guide is pretty convenient - small enough to fit into most bags without taking up too much space, but not so small that it's unreadable (though the print size is very small.) The charts are in color, and are easy to read. I can't really comment about the actual content provided - while it *looks* very good, I can't be absolutely sure how useful it will be to a true professional.
My feeling is this: if you're a photographer who has a solid grasp of the complexities of the art, but want to take your skills to the next *technical* level, this may be for you. If you, like me, are a relative beginner, who wants to learn how to take better photos overall, this is definitely not it. Perhaps consider Ansel Adam's series instead - a prominent photo magazine editor recommends beginning with _The Negative_.
A very good pocket reference.......2002-10-13
I think every advance amateur should have a copy of this guide in his/her bag. If for nothing else, the condense film guide and the color conversion/compensation dials alone are worth the money. Yes, you can get the same information somewhere else, but this is the only pocket guide that consolidates everything. Professionals may also benefit from it when they have to change from their routine, such as going to a different film. This book is not for beginners.
Definitely for the pros.......2002-03-06
The key word on this photoguide is "professional". I'm a professional wannabe, with decent talent and experience, and I found this guide to be a bit over-whelming. But, maybe I'll grow into it and become a better photographer along the way!
