Excellent Resource.......2006-07-14
Excellent resource for MEP, plumbing and piping engineers. Provides thorough descriptions of pressure losses, treatments, correct valve uses and lots more. This book, when coupled with a CAD pipe library (such as Hercule Design's ANSI one), has all a designer needs. The inclusion of metric formulae is also most welcome.
wealth of knowledge.......2005-04-30
All the basic information on pumps, compressors, piping, plumbing, and any kind of specialty equipment used for any facility you could imagine.
There is everything from piping connection and configuration of an underground gasoline tank to details on the design of animal laboratories. The book is full of charts and solid recommendations on materials and methods.
Even if you think you know a chapter's subject extremely well, this book will have new and useful information that will extend your knowledge considerably.
If you do mechanical/piping design for commercial, industrial, or healthcare facilities this book is an incredible buy.
Facility Piping Systems Handbook by Michael Frankel.......2000-08-10
This is one of the finest books about facilities systems I have ever found. It's rather banal title is misleading, because this book covers every aspect of the very complicated piping systems that serve institutional, industrial and even residential buildings. To give you an example, the chapter on compressed gas systems explains the working mechanisms of 10 types of compressor motors, and then goes on to explain silencers, aftercoolers, filters (and how to select filters) air dryers (with explanations and diagrams of the verious types), lubricators, air compressor drives, pressure regulation, cooling water, hose and fittings. Then in the same chapter it explains specialized features of compressed gas for light industrial uses, laboratories, and hospitals. And this is just one chapter. There are another 18 chapters with similar levels of detail and comprehensiveness, including vacuum systems, site utilities, general plumbing, waste, even animal care facility systems. This is a terrific book.

A fantastic reference..........2007-08-23
A great book about creating "accidental" watercolor effects. Even if I only manage to utilize a small percentage of what Nita Engle teaches here, it will be a big help to me in my attempts to paint.
How to Make Watercolor Paint Itself.......2007-08-22
I like this book. I mislaid my first copy and had to reorder!
Nita most graciously has shared a lot of information.
Beginners may find the techniques difficult.
I personally seldom use Paynes gray pigment for the reason of the darkness it creates in my paintings. Note: I do mix my own darks.
I found Nita's textures and experiments most rewarding.
I highly recommend her book. BJ Cook Spokane Valley, WA
how to make a Watercolor paint itself.......2007-08-15
This book is in itself a great overall benefit to amatuers like myself who are basically self taught,I have found it very useful in the mixing and flowing of various colours, but experiment is the key word.Thank you Nita.
Great but, what a headache.......2007-03-20
I'm kinda novice in watercolor, and like a lot of people I'm impressed by
Mrs. Nita Engle's work. But this book discouraged me to even try.
I'll come back to it eventually in a few more year.
This is not the book for serious artists. .......2007-01-12
I was disappointed in this book. The art and techniques illustrated are of the type one might expect to see on a TV Craft Show. I would instead recomment Robert Wade's watercolor book.

Very good.......2007-03-09
This book has been taken out of the Library several times since I purchased it for our collection in Jan. My hobby is painting, and I thought the directions and examples were well written and illustrated. A very good book for the beginner to intermediate watercolor enthusiast.
Great inspiration!.......2007-01-06
Photos are wonderful, the demos really help one to see how to get from your photo to a painting - to see from both the photographer's eye and the painter's eye. For those of you that sometimes get stuck in the detail of the photo and want to loosen up - this is a very helpful demonstration. A wonderful kickstart if you're having a "block" too - you do WANT to paint from these photos! Happy Painting!
Rating On Paint Watercolor Landscapes from Photos.......2006-08-30
I really should ask for my money back on this book....it was poorly written, vague in description, the cover is great and appears appealing....this is not worth the price of admission.
Sorry.!!

Help for a most challenging subject.......2005-02-11
I have been painting & teaching watercolor for 15 years. This is the first helpful book that I have found on painting seascapes in watercolor. I accidentally ran across it in the library of a retirement community where I teach & immediately borrowed it. It contains basic sketches & information about the "character" & construction of waves, surf, foam, & trails which the ordinary painter is not aware of. Reading this book is an "education"; it contains sketches & how-to instructions which any painter can follow to practice painting seascapes in watercolor -- one of the most challenging subjects in this media. As soon as I located this book on Amazon.com, I ordered it.
Book Description
One of America's most widely admired artist offers sound advice and answers questions of technical and creative aspects of the art. Thirteen full color demonstrations all begin with a value sketch and detailed descriptions of how the picture was painted. John's irrepressive enthusiasm is evident through out. Includes 37 of his favorite paintings.

The best book on watercolor technique.......2001-05-09
I checked out this book from the library more times than I can count before discovering it was still in print. It is absolutely the best book I've found on watercolor technique (and I've checked out many of them) and the only one I own. John Pike's style of working and his discussion of technique and choice of materials helped alleviate my anxieties about getting started in watercolor. He keeps things simple. I particularly like his philosophy of using value sketches as a guide before starting any finished work, and the step-by-step color photographs showing a painting's evolution. His accompanying text is also very helpful. I've been painting in watercolor for 8 years and have many books on the subject. Mr. Pike's book is still the one I turn to consistently when I need help or inspiration.
A Beginner Finds a Friend.......2000-06-26
As an absolute beginner in watercolor, my first stop after my first lesson was to the local library. Joining an existing watercolor class of long-time painters left me scrambling for the meaning of what everyone was talking about and doing. In my tiny town nestled in the Colorado Rockies, there were only half a dozen watercolor books in the library, and by some good fortune, John Pike's book, published many years before, had been donated. Even as a novice, I could see that it was far and away the best of the lot, and when I took it home and started reading and studying, I knew I had found a friend. Well, I kept that book out for over two months, and paid a hefty late fee to do so.
I thought Mr. Pike's books were out of print, but on a whim, I decided to search his name on Amazon.com, and it was exciting to find "John Pike Paints Watercolors." I admit this is not the same title I found in the library, but the book review discusses his style of writing and teaching. That style overcame the fear I had to try, to begin, to learn, to dare. He is a teacher! And because of his writing, I was able to begin to catch up to my classmates faster than I had imagined. His paintings are full of life, interesting in subject, and inspirational to a beginner. I am privileged to know that I will have his book on my own shelf.
Insight to watercolor.......2000-06-21
I first got this book in the library and now must own it. Pike's insights have opened new doors for me as a relatively new watercolorist. His methods, techniques and explanations make this one of the few books on the subject that I want to have for ready reference rather than just an occassional read. This is the best artists book I have yet to come across!

Read if You Know Nothing About Photog/Computers/Business.......2003-03-01
Reading through this book was very disappointing to me as a beginning photographer. The book does not deliver what is promised on the back cover or introduction. The author glosses over each topic but never actually gives any information that isn't already common knowledge. The computer information is very vague and outdated, the home business chapter spends time on balancing family/photo/part-time wants and not setting up in your home office specific to photography, the model posing and lighting section gives about five pointers that if you haven't already learned them -- you are really only just thinking of being a photographer, finding models has never been a problem so that part and the two "legal" contracts were useless to me. Keep searching there are bound to be more informative books on the subject. The book lacks focus in relation to the title. I feel like I got hooked by the title and didn't learn what I bought the book for.
Not at all useful.......2001-09-25
The corny cover photo of a swimsuit model in mirrored sunglasses holding a seashell should have warned me to steer clear of this one.
If you're looking for a book to help you take better portraits then you'll find no useful information here. The book is full of large glossy photos, few of which have any artistic merit, and *none* of which contain any technical information whatsoever (no aperture settings, shutter speeds, film types, camera/lens information, lighting configurations, filter selection....nothing.)
Even the business advice is so watered down as to be almost useless. The author's advice on computer equipment and peripherals is already outdated, and the section on running a home office lacks any real information content. Readers with even the most basic business savvy will find themselves rolling their eyes at this chapter. There is nothing here that you didn't already know via common sense.
Both photographers who aspire to improve their work and those who aspire to improve their income will be disappointed. There is no material of value in this book.
A great how too book that is extremely easy to read!!!.......2001-04-18
After looking at this book for almost a year and the greatrecommendation from .... .... This book was a joy to read and provided enough detail and inspiration. Joe's writing style is easy to read and Len Katlman's images are delightful. I am just starting in glamour photography, but with the ideas and hints this book provides it has made my desire burn that much hotter. GREAT BOOK!
Book hits the mark........2001-04-03
As a Published Photographer (Cycle News) and Model (Shutterbug) I really benefitted from the vauable and contemperory way of finacially increaing my love and involvement in the Glamour industry. Joe's new way of looking at the industry and incorperating modern methods and the Internet opens up new realms of profit and exposure for the hobbyist, average or pro Photographer. It evens gives some light tech. info which goes beyond the Title and feels like more for your money. Although Joe's other lighting tech. books are far advanced in Professional Tech and info. This book hits the mark for it's title. Information that I put to work and have directly made more full time income in the Glamour market. Being in the Industry I didn't even think of his different angles till I bought the book. The Photography of Joe Farace who's images I see regurarly in Shutterbug, E-Digitial, etc. and Len Kaltman's one of the Nation's top Glamour Image providers compliments the book nicely. Images my not superceed Playboy but show what is right, necessary and needed to sell Glamour images as both of these Photographers do. Kaltman uses alot of Net models which proves the knowledge and success of the writer using different approaches, techonolgy and ideas. Most images are Glamour style. Some Adult oriented for parents too.. make note. The book hits the mark and earns five stars from me
