Thomas Beesley was founder and is the CEO for a leading manufacturer of chiral stationary phases and has published papers on TLC, HPLC and chiral separations involving cyclodextrins. He has also coauthored papers with Daniel W. Armstrong, an expert on modern cyclodextrin columns. Raymond Scott has worked in the field of separation science for over 40 years and has contributed extensively to the development of both gas and liquid chromatography publishing over 160 papers on the subjects.

Description:
A simple, inexpensive and efficient preconcentration and clean-up liquid-phase microextraction method (LPME) using porous polypropylene hollow fibre membrane was developed for the extraction of the antidepressant mirtazapine from human plasma. The effects of different parameters influencing the efficiency of extraction were described and optimized. Under optimized conditions, mirtazapine was extracted with 22@ml toluene from 0.7ml of plasma previously diluted with 3.1ml deionized water and alkalinized with 0.15ml 10M NaOH. Mefloquine was used as internal standard. The chromatographic analysis was carried out through chiral liquid chromatography (LC) using a Chiralpak AD column and hexane-ethanol (98:2, v/v) plus 0.1% diethylamine as mobile phase, at a flow rate of 1.5mlmin^-^1. Detection was carried out at 292nm. The mean recoveries of (+)-(S)- and (-)-(R)- mirtazapine were 29.1 and 28.8%, respectively. The quantification limit (LOQ) was 6.25ngml^-^1 with linear response over the 6.25-625ngml^-^1 concentration range for both enantiomers. Within-day and between-day assay precision and accuracy were studied at three concentration levels (15, 100 and 500ngml^-^1). For both mirtazapine enantiomers, the coefficients of variation (CV) and deviation from the theoretical values were lower than 15% at all concentration levels. The developed and validated method showed that LPME is a promising technique for sample preparation for the analyses of chiral drugs in biological samples.

Brilliant softwate.......2007-08-10

The applets on this is just great for understanding many physics concepts. It covers most topics (mechanics, waves, electrostatics, magnetism etc), it has interactive menus so you can change the parameters in the experiments and it logs the output and plots them for you.

Highly recommended for any high school student and even university students. An excellent teaching and learning tool. I highly recommend it to my students since it moves abstract concepts closer to the concrete stage.

If you are a parent, this is a MUST have for your child to aid their learning of physics concepts.

The downside is some of the applets do not work but they are a small minority. Note you need to enable the java function on your browser, just go to Sun Microsystems website, it should work.

This is an excellent book both for a teacher as well as the student. It extensively uses modern technology for explaining the complex phenomena in Physics.

The Authers have called it Physlets i.e. Physics Applets.

The applets presented are highly interactive, and allow the student to interact and fully understand the behaviour changes by changing various parameters.

It gives an excellent grasp of the topic under discussion and also gives a sound understanding of the concepts using visual medium.

The authers need to be congratulated for their highly innovative and pioneering work simplifying the pedegogy of learning/teaching physics.

Large number of illustrative examples. The reader can develop his/her own Physlets.

Highly recommended.

Great tool for visualizing quantum physics concepts.......2006-08-20

This book is an attempt to teach modern physics to students by enabling them to visualize various physical phenomena via Java applets designed to demonstrate various physics concepts - thus the name "physlets". The book and its accompanying CD contain around 250 such physlets that span a broad spectrum of physics courses, although the emphasis is on quantum theory. The book has some discussion of the concepts involved, particularly in the context of the parameters of the particular Physlet being examined, but this really wasn't meant to be a textbook. It's just a supplementary text for a variety of physics courses in which visualization of a concept is a real roadblock in learning. The book has 200 exercises, and they are not what you would expect in a physics book. The problems largely consist of running a physlet and answering some questions about your observations, or you are asked to change the input parameters to a physlet and explain what you observe versus what you observed when the default parameter was active. At no point does the author assume you are a Java programmer yourself and ask you to code up your own physlet, although if you know how, that would probably be a very educational activity.
