Book Description
This is the first book to concentrate on elucidating chemical reactivity from the viewpoint of molecular topology. Describing the most fundamental structural patterns in molecules, topology and graph theory are regarded to be the ideal tools for exploring the relationships between the structure and the properties of chemical compounds. A team of internationally recognized experts from seven countries present a variety of graph-theoretical and topological approaches to chemical reactivity. The specific topics covered include among others, the latest developments in the interplay between graph theory and molecular orbital theory, three dimensional molecular shapes and their changes, isomerization reactions in organic and inorganic chemistry, topological indices and their application to structure-reactivity relationships and mechanistic studies. Useful topology-based reactivity rules and more general principles controlling topology changes in chemical reactions are also presented.
For researchers, teachers and students in all areas of chemistry.

The Casimir Effect and Its Applications (Oxford Science Publications)
ASIN: 9810243979 |
Book Description
In its simplest manifestation, the Casimir effect is a quantum force of attraction between two parallel uncharged conducting plates. More generally, it refers to the interaction - which may be either attractive or repulsive - between material bodies due to quantum fluctuations in whatever fields are relevant. It is a local version of the van der Waals force between molecules. Its sweep ranges from perhaps its being the origin of the cosmological constant to its being responsible for the confinement of quarks.
This monograph develops the theory of such forces, based primarily on physically transparent Green's function techniques, and makes applications from quarks to the cosmos, as well as observable consequences in condensed matter systems. It is aimed at graduate students and researchers in theoretical physics, quantum field theory, and applied mathematics.

Book Description
The Poincaré Seminar is held twice a year at the Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris. This volume contains the lectures of the 2002 seminars. The main topic of the first one was the vacuum energy, in particular the Casimir effect and the nature of the cosmological constant. The second one concentrated on renormalization, giving a comprehensive account of its mathematical structure and applications to high energy physics, statistical mechanics and classical mechanics.
Students will find excellent introductions to the subjects with further lectures leading to the frontiers of experimental and theoretical research, scientists will profit from contributions by outstanding experts.

Book Description
Something went terribly wrong in Moon County, Georgia. The bonds that sustain this predominantly black community were tested by sex, greed, and murder. In 9 Lessons for a Meaningful Life: Voices of Inspiration, J. K. Dennis captures the lives of the unforgettable characters who reveal so much about themselves while sometimes obscuring the roles they play in changing their community. This book is the collected wisdom of individuals who hope to teach others what somebody should have taught them.

(RAW Rating: 4.5) - Southern Lessons.......2005-11-09
Every now and then you get a book that forces you to pause a moment and simply savor what life has to offer. For me, that book was 9 LESSONS FOR A MEANINGFUL LIFE: Voices of Inspiration by J. K. Dennis. When I first picked up this book, I assumed it was another inspirational self-help manual designed to define what a meaningful life is and give step-by-step instructions on how to attain it. Imagine my surprise at the nine jewels I found within the pages of this very moving and thoughtfully crafted masterpiece. Mr. Dennis introduces readers to an imaginary place called Moon County, Georgia, where most of its inhabitants are African-American. This is a collection of nine short stories based on characters from Moon County who have lessons to teach about the things that matter in life.
J. K. Dennis has engineered a very memorable group of stories about living in the rural south while offering some sage advice on living a meaningful life. The characters are very real as their voices capture the essence of the town and vibrantly tell the story in each piece. As I read the stories, a couple of them seemed familiar; reminding me of similar tales I may have heard in my own southern upbringing. Each lesson was humbling and accurately portrayed by the storyteller. I thoroughly enjoyed each one and found it very hard to choose a favorite. I felt that a couple of them could have been a little longer; however, the author did change the pace some by making his last a short novella. For an interesting and out of the ordinary type of read, try this one; you won't be disappointed.

Different, but good!.......2005-07-08
In this read sit back and get ready for a journey to Moon County, Georgia, where you will meet and share the lives of many of its residents. It will be quite an experience.
The author gives us as he calls it, 9 Lessons, in the form of 9 very good stories. Take the first story; we meet the local store owner who paves the way for the rest of the read, wooing us into the southern community in his soft manner.
We are taken along with each story, meeting a young girl in one, who is forced to marry a man she does not love, but learns to love in time; just like Mama said she would. In each story we are carried along with the lives of the people, their problems, their failures and their inward intents in life's matters.
I was surprised, at first I didn't think I would enjoy this read, but I found myself caught up in the stories, the people and the happenings and really enjoyed the book. It's a different read; I feel. Not the norm, but one that brings to light a lot of truths about people that tend to be buried, or ignored. Very well defined and interesting characters, placed in the local of a southern community bringing these stories life.
I believe you will enjoy this one, especially if you want something a little different, yet captivating at the same time.
A New Place in the Imaginary World.......2005-06-30
If you have a taste for small southern towns where quirks seem as normal as the hands on a clock, then welcome to Moon County. That is your georgraphy as you enter the world of J.K. Dennis's "9 Lessons for a Meaningful Life." Dennis takes these quirks and assembles them into 8 short stories and a novella, all linked by place, but also by an atmosphere that is timeless, yet plainly American.
It's true these roads have been trod before. In fiction from near-forgotten names like Erskine Caldwell and William March to those that still strike a chord, such as Robert Penn Warren and Eudora Welty, the small town in a southern county has played host to more than its share of literary talent. We almost cringe when we find ourselves walking behind the slow-moving hay wagon on the sun-beaten road into town. We see the tar shacks down by the tracks, and the palatial pile of lumber way up on the hill, and we think: "Hey, nobody's going to out-Faulkner Faulkner."
So it is refreshing to find a voice that doesn't try. Dennis's setting has the familiarity and comfort level necessary to add flavor without overwhelming his stories. He leaves the action to real people, and doesn't patch holes with atmospherics. At his best he captures the voices of his people to illustrate the nuances of love: love growing like a flower out of a decomposing mixture of sadness and faithlessness; love rising, magical and vaporous, to overcome class, money, and all other obstacles; love failing, and breaking under the weight of violence and pride.
As the title indicates, there are 9 lessons here, told in 9 stories by 9 narrators. My favorites are Grace, and how she manages through tears, Mattie, and her triangular relationship to a child and immortality, and Earl, who shows us a race which is defined by far more than a finish line. Those are the best, but there isn't a bad one in the bunch. The novella, "Sonny and Cleophus," is slightly jarring, in that it requires the reader to adapt to a different pace of storytelling. That's a function of length. But Dennis wisely puts this longer work at the end, where it fits in both style and theme.
The satisfactions in this book are both small and large. Each story has a wholeness of a sort, and if many of them seem a bit ragged around the edges, most of that is intentional. This book relies on a curiously human magic that doesn't wrap itself up in neat packages. Ribbons are half tied, and tape is peeling off the edges. Sometimes you have to search the story to find its core, but the core is there, and worth finding.
Dennis has taken a brand of literature that too often lets its icons fall into cliche, and given the tiny twist necessary to avoid that. He has drawn love, hate and personal history in words that catch in the gut. I don't pretend to know if it's a classic, but "9 Lessons for a Meaningful Life" is a damn good read.
