Book Description
An authoritative textbook and up-to-date professional's guide to basic and advanced principles and practices
Nuclear reactors now account for a significant portion of the electrical power generated worldwide. At the same time, the past few decades have seen an ever-increasing number of industrial, medical, military, and research applications for nuclear reactors. Nuclear reactor physics is the core discipline of nuclear engineering, and as the first comprehensive textbook and reference on basic and advanced nuclear reactor physics to appear in a quarter century, this book fills a large gap in the professional literature.
Nuclear Reactor Physics is a textbook for students new to the subject, for others who need a basic understanding of how nuclear reactors work, as well as for those who are, or wish to become, specialists in nuclear reactor physics and reactor physics computations. It is also a valuable resource for engineers responsible for the operation of nuclear reactors. Dr. Weston Stacey begins with clear presentations of the basic physical principles, nuclear data, and computational methodology needed to understand both the static and dynamic behaviors of nuclear reactors. This is followed by in-depth discussions of advanced concepts, including extensive treatment of neutron transport computational methods. As an aid to comprehension and quick mastery of computational skills, he provides numerous examples illustrating step-by-step procedures for performing the calculations described and chapter-end problems.
Nuclear Reactor Physics is a useful textbook and working reference. It is an excellent self-teaching guide for research scientists, engineers, and technicians involved in industrial, research, and military applications of nuclear reactors, as well as government regulators who wish to increase their understanding of nuclear reactors.

Book is hard to read, even for a nuclear engineering student.......2007-10-06
My professor was so excited when this new book came out. As we started reading it, we realized that the doctor who wrote this book was aiming it at an audience who would already know all of this, never really introducing any new terms or reviewing in any way the new materials to allow the student (who is supposed to be learning it for the first time) to really learn the subject. We ended up switching back to the old book for the remainder of the class. Over all, don't buy unless you already know what you are talking about.

A great overview of reactor technology.......2007-01-20
I am a trained scientist, but not a nuclear Engineer. I wanted to learn more about how reactors work, specifically how they are built, how they function and what they look like inside. Prior to this book, all I found was oversimplistic cartoon drawings made for non-technical people or Nuclear Engineering textbooks that were loaded with equations but had few diagrams of actual reactors. This book is exactly what I needed. It has plenty of technical discussion but is not overly mathematical. Has loads of very detailed drawings of reactors, reactor systems and containment structures, plus discussion of nuclear waste, accident situations, etc. The book describes, many reactor types like PWR, BWR, gas-cooled reactors, fast reactors, heavy water reactors, etc. The book was written in 1979, so it doesn't have info on the latest in technology, but that was not a problem for me. If you want a good, detailed description of how reactors work and look inside, this is a fantastic book. Plenty of detail without a lot of equations and being and older book, the price is very low. New books on this topic are very expensive.

Principles of Fusion Energy: An Introduction to Fusion Energy for Students of Science and Engineering
ASIN: 0801854563 |
Amazon.com
Fusion as a source of energy has been a long-sought but never-achieved dream of the scientific establishment. The idea sounds simple enough: create cheap, limitless energy by the same processes that fuel the sun. The problem, however, is scale: how to reproduce the continual fusion of hydrogen atom nuclei in a reactor that is much, much smaller than the sun. This is the puzzle T. Kenneth Fowler describes in Fusion Quest, a book that argues passionately in favor of continued fusion research. Though there has yet been little success in the field, Fowler insists that so much progress has been made that fusion power will likely be possible within the next century. He spends most of the book explaining the challenges that face physicists in realizing this dream. The Fusion Quest is more technical than the average popular science book and will probably appeal more to those readers who have some background in physics and mathematics.
Book Description
A few minutes before midnight on December 9, 1993, a group of scientists at the Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory produced the first definitive demonstration of controlled fusion energy. Within the confines of a doughnut-shaped device known as TFTR, a plasma consisting of equal parts tritium and deuterium was superheated by atomic beams--producing a second-long burst of energy that peaked at three million watts. For a brief instant, the power of the Sun had been captured on Earth.
In The Fusion Quest, T. Kenneth Fowler offers a vivid and colorful insider's account of the decades-long search for fusion power--a potentially abundant and environmentally "clean" energy source that could sustain industrial society in the twenty-first century and beyond. Scientists have known for more than sixty years that nuclear fusion powers the sun and stars. But would it work on Earth? To help answer this question, Fowler explains the physical principles on which fusion is based, describes the experiments that have led to the present state of the art, and shows how all these considerations would affect the design of possible fusion-based nuclear power plants.
Fowler describes magnets nearly as cold as outer space surrounding miniature "stars" hotter than the sun; lasers that for the merest split-second produce a blinding flash more powerful than every light bulb in America turned on at once. And he recounts the exciting discoveries of classical physics from Newton to Einstein, from Faraday to Lorentz, that provide the foundation of fusion science today. Ultimately, The Fusion Quest offers an informative and timely look at fusion's potential to provide an environmentally acceptable new energy source in a future more vulnerable to energy shortages and pollution than many of us realize.
Customer Reviews:
A good fusion book for nobies :).......2006-09-17
Kenneth Fowler does a good job explaining aspects of fusion in detail to those who are less acquainted with it. The downside of this book is that it's old, 1997 and there is likely a lot more research that has happened since then. Quite a fascinating subject well covered in the book. By no means is the fusion quest over.
Endless Quest.......2006-09-12
My first encounter with nuclear fusion was when I witnessed a test of the University of Texas at Austin tokomak reactor during 1975. Sparks the size of my fist jumped as the huge relays closed, sending thousands of amps of current surging the the huge electromagnets that would squeeze the tenuous torus of hydrogen gas into an inferno hotter than the sun -- crushing hydrogen nuclei together to produce energy. Nuclear fusion held the shining promise of limitless cheap energy, with virtually no radioactive waste or accident risk. Since that time I have watched incredulously as national fusion effort foundered helplessly, while our nation squandered its resources on foreign petroleum, and burned into greenhouse gases. After reading this book, I have a better understanding of why we failed. The problem is not money -- Fowler recounts the millions spent of muscular hardware. The real problem is the inability of our nation to harvest our best minds to work on the promise of limitless energy, and the failure of nerve by our country's leaders to make fusion a goal. It will take more than this book to revitalize the fusion effort -- it reads like a dull college lecture, complete with tests at the end. Nevertheless, fusion students will appreciate a chance to aquaint themselves with the specialized terminology and details of this specialized field of physics. Real fusion enthusiasts might be curious enough to look at a less successful attempt at fusion -- Fire from Ice: Searching for the Truth Behind the Cold Fusion Furor by Eugene J. Mallove.

Book Description
In this new approach for a consistent transport theory in nuclear fusion processes Leslie Woods draws on over 40 years of fusion research to directly compare theoretical findings with experimental results, while taking into account recently discovered phenomena. This is thus the first book to find theoretical explanations to the sometimes-puzzling tokamak observations.
Following a look at the quest for fusion power, the author goes on to examine tokamak magnetic fields and energy losses, as well as plasma flow and loop voltage. There is also a discussion of the technical constraints on the recently announced ITER design.

Book Description
This book describes the basic knowledge in nuclear, neutron, and reactor physics necessary for understanding the principle and implementation of accelerator driven subcritical nuclear reactors (ADSRs), also known as hybrid reactors. Since hybrid reactors may contribute to future nuclear energy production, the book begins with a discussion of the general energy problem. It proceeds by developing the elementary physics of neutron reactors, including the basic nuclear physics involved. The book then presents computational methods, with special emphasis on Monte Carlo methods. It examines the specifics of ADSR, starting from the neutron spallation source to safety features. A thorough discussion is given on the size of hybrid reactors, which follows very different constraints from that of critical reactors. The possibility to optimize the source importance is examined in detail. The discussion of the fuel evolution follows with its relevance to safety and to the waste production and incineration. The conditions for having a constant reactivity over sufficiently long lapse of time are also discussed. The book also evaluates a number of practical designs that have been proposed. Finally, the last chapter deals with the examination of proposed and possible waste transmutation policies and the role which could be played by ADSR in this context. The potential advantage of the Thorium cycle is discussed as well as different scenarios that could be used to implement it.
Book Description
Some countries have moved beyond the design and operation of nuclear electricity generating systems to confronting the issue of nuclear waste disposal, whole others are still committed to further nuclear facility construction. Volume 24 chronicles these key developments and examines nuclear reactor accidents at Chernobyl, Bhopal, and TMI. The text also analyzes current international knowledge of neutron interactions; deterministic methods based on mean values for assessing radiation distributions; practical applications of the TIBERE models to explicit computation of leakage terms in realistic reactor geometry; and a technique to deal with the issues of finance, risk assessment, and public perception.

An Introduction To The Golden Age Of The Eerie And The Strange.......2006-06-09
S.T. Joshi, author of H.P. LOVECRAFT: THE DECLINE OF THE WEST (1990) and H.P. LOVECRAFT: A LIFE (1996), editor of LOVECRAFT STUDIES and STUDIES IN WEIRD FICTION, has compiled 14 tales of madness, horror and the bizarre which highlight the work of some of the best American and British authors from the 'golden age of weird fiction' (circa 1880-1940).
Following Joshi's informative introduction, he categorizes the stories as follows:
I. Tales of Supernatural Horror
Ralph Adams Cram, "The Dead Valley"
Fiona Macleod, "The Sin Eater"
William Hope Hodgson, "The Voice In The Night"
II. Tales Of Non-Supernatural Horror
W.C. Morrow, "His Unconquerable Enemy"
Ambrose Bierce, "My Favorite Murder"
III. Tales Of Awe
Arthur Machen, "The Inmost Light"
Algernon Blackwood, "The Man Whom The Trees Loved"
IV. Tales Of Fantasy
F. Marion Crawford, "The King's Messenger
Lord Dunsany, "The Unhappy Body"
M.P. Shiel, "Xelucha"
Frank Belknap Long, "The Eye Above The Mantle"
R.H. Barlow, "A Dim-Remembered Story"
V. Tales Of Pseudo-Science
Fitz-James O'Brien, "The Diamond Lens"
H.P. Lovecraft, "Facts Concerning The Late Arthur Jermyn And His Family
The inclusion of Macleod's "The Sin Eater" and Barlow's "A Dim-Remembered Story" alone make this anthology a worthwile purchase.
More Meat For The Stew.......2006-02-13
A good intro into the genre of the weird and eeries tale. Almost all the selections were good reads. Especially notable are Algernon Blackwood's "The Man Whom The Trees Loved" and Fiona MacLeod's "The Sin Eater."
But a Poe selection would have been good to show the pioneering work the great man made to the development of the genre. And why wasn't a selection from Robert E. Howard's vast body of work included? As for Lovecraft, "The Colour Out Of Space" would have been a much better selection than "Arthur Jermyn." For that matter, authors such as Lovecraft and Blackwood and Machen should have had more than one selection. Such an overwhelming influence did these three in particular have on the genre.
If you see this book on the library shelves borrow it.
some great tales.......2003-04-08
some great stories here. by machen, lovecraft, cram and hodgson. also an interesting one by blackwood. but basically, that's it. the non-supernatural and most of the weird fiction was completely uninteresting to me.
Must Read Horror.......2001-01-19
This volume is an indispensible guide to the authors that have inspired modern horror, as well as a darn good read. Blackwood's "The Man Whom the Trees Loved" is a study in despair that will surprise even the most savvy of readers. R.H. Barlow's "A Dim-Remembered Story" creates a feeling of the surreal that is so strong, one begins to question the truth of our own existence. Machen, Lovecraft, and Lord Dunsany are also represented. The book is organized in a fashion that categorizes the stories as examples of various types of weird tales. Many of these stories are out of print, so to find a collection of the finest stories of the genre is, one might say, a stroke of Providence.
