Book Description
This book is the proceedings of the VIII International Symposium on Nidoviruses (Coronaviruses and Arteriviruses), held May 20-25, 2000, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
This comprehensive new book summarizes current knowledge concerning this group of viruses. It details the genomic structure of the viruses, the mechanism of their entry into cells, their mechanism of replication, RNA synthesis, and particle assembly within cells. The book also describes the epidemiology of these viruses, their pathogenesis, and the role of the immune system in interacting with these viruses.
Customer Reviews:
Review from MicroBiology Today, Vol. 29, August 2002.......2002-08-27
"The book is a treasure for details on various replication functions as well as virus-cell interactions, pathogenesis and vaccine development. The quality of the presentations is excellent. This book should be studied by every 'RNA Virologist', but the intricate replication starategies and other features of these viruses are of general interest to all virologists...the book...is worth the expense and is highly recommended."
Book Description
This pedagogical classic and essential reference for anyone engaged in research in molecular spectroscopy focuses on the mathematics involved in detailed vibrational analyses of polyatomic molecules. It leads the reader gradually from application of wave mechanics to potential functions and methods of solving the secular determinant. 16 appendices.
Customer Reviews:
A Classical Book.......2007-06-15
This is a classical book on the subject of molecular vibrations. People interested in molecular spectroscopy or Quantum Chemistry should read it. Excellent book!
probably the best book about molecular vibration.......2006-03-03
It is probably the best book about molecular vibrations, cited in many other books.
It treats complex arguments with rigour but at the same time it is able to explain them clearly.
very good..........2001-12-06
In this one, Wilson writes definitively, math/scientifically, and with sincerity of purpose. Don't get confused by the word 'theory.' There's as much math in here as Born and Wolf's P of O. The only diffenrence is Wilson's is much more algebra-based. The mathematics (i.e. isomorphs) is 'taught', without breaking the flow, and is not assumed that you know the stuff already--- or can find it somewhere else. This book stands out because there is more science in here than names of scientists, and his references are for real. I would also say it was unique because books with titles like 'Molecular Vibrations' are usually skipped over for titles like 'mechanics' or 'quantum theory.' Spectroscopy was a major advancement in science, and it is good to see it skillfully treated with enlightening clarity.
A MUST HAVE for those dealing with B matrix methods.......2000-12-29
This is the original work by E.B.Wilson where the G and F matrix formalism is presented. The G matrix, related to kinetic vibrational energy is built uppon the elements of the B matrix defined from "internal coordinates". Many quantum chemistry software packages use this exact methodology to build normal coordinates. For those working on Quantum Chem Molecular Orbital calculations, this book is a must.
1955 classic.......2000-06-28
Reissue of original, which was published in 1955, in the pre-computer age. Solid QM description of vibrating polyatomic molecules, and their interaction with EM radiation. The authors exploit group theory (molecular symmetry) to reduce the calculational work as much as possible. Good introduction to the use of finite groups, e.g. how to exploit the hexagonal symmetry of the benzene molecule.

Book Description
Both the interpretation of atomic spectra and the application of atomic spectroscopy to current problems in astrophysics, laser physics, and thermonuclear plasmas require a thorough knowledge of the Slater-Condon theory of atomic structure and spectra. This book gathers together aspects of the theory that are widely scattered in the literature and augments them to produce a coherent set of closed-form equations suitable both for computer calculations on cases of arbitrary complexity and for hand calculations for very simple cases.
Book Description
Condon and Shortley has become the standard comprehensive work on the theory of atomic spectra. The first two chapters contain a brief historical introduction and an exposition of quantum mechanics along the lines formulated by Dirac. Then follow sixteen chapters devoted to a unified, logical deduction of the structure of the spectra of atoms from quantum mechanical principles. The theory is given in full detail and the results are amply documented with comparisons with experimental observations. When first published, a reviewer in Nature said that ‘Its power and thoroughness leave the general impression of a work of the first rank, which successfully unifies the existing state of our knowledge, and will prove for many years a starting point for further researches and an inspiration to those who may undertake them’. Subsequent reviewers have amply confirmed these views. Science in 1952 commented that it ‘has served half a generation and as a guide in further detailed research’, and Reviews of Modern Physics in 1957 that this ‘monumental book … continues to be the most comprehensive account of our understanding of atomic spectra - the fruit of several decades’ intensive study by a great number of physicists of all countries’.

A Must Have for the Atomic Physicist.......2006-07-22
I ordered this text specifically for the genearlized form of the angular momentum coupling constants near the end of Chapter 3 and have not had a chance to read the entire text. However, this text is one of my Ph.D. advisor's key "go to" texts, and hence, it seems to be a must have for the atomic physicist.
Solid book, though not so user friendly........2001-03-01
This is the legendary "theory of atomic spectra" so often referred to in various quantum mechanics books. It contains detailed accounts of various schemes of describing the spectra of various atoms, dealing with all sorts of approximation schemes. The first part of this book concisely summarizes some of the important aspects of quantum theory (radiation, angular momentum, perturbation theory and the hydrogen atom), followed by a very good discussion of the spectrum of the hydrogen atom and of one-electron atoms in general. Then various approximations are discussed: the central field approximation, jj-coupling, RS coupling, spin-orbit interactions, almost closed shells, etc . . . Although written in 1935 (and revised in 1962), this books remains relevant for today's students; the laws of nature, after all, don't grow old as books do. Another good thing about this book is the wealth of information one can find in it. If it has to do with atoms, you'll probably find it here - for instance, a very good discussion of rare gases and of the finiteness of the nucleus. The good things having been said, it's now time to move on to some bad points. Two, actually; first of all, some of the modern methods of dealing with atoms are not included in this book (naturally, considering the time it was written in). This means that this book is not aimed at helping current research but at neatly summarizing past knowledge. Also, its style is dry and a bit tiresome. I'd recommend this book to people who are interested in learning about atomic physics. It is too specialized for anyone from outside the field.

Modern Quantum Mechanics (2nd Edition)

Book Description
This established text and reference contains an advanced presentation of quantum mechanics adapted to the requirements of modern atomic physics. It includes topics of great current interest such as semiclassical theory, chaos and Bose-Einstein condensation in atomic gases. The third edition of Theoretical Atomic Physics extends the successful second edition with a detailed treatment of the wave motion of atoms near the anticlassical or extreme quantum regime, and it also contains an introduction to some aspects of atom optics that are relevant for current and future experiments involving ultra-cold atoms. Various problems are included together with complete solutions. Because it has more emphasis on theory, this book enables the reader to appreciate the fundamental assumptions underlying standard theoretical constructs and to embark on independent research projects.
