Book Description
Hardbound. This book addresses primarily the chemist and engineer in industrial research and process development, where competitive pressures put a premium on scale-up by large factors to cut development time. To be safe, such scale-up should be based on "fundamental" kinetics, that is, mathematics that reflect the elementary steps of which the reactions consist. The book forges fundamental kinetics into a practical tool by presenting new effective methods for elucidation of mechanisms and reduction of mathematical complexity without unacceptable sacrifice in accuracy.
For elucidation of pathways and networks, the book provides a host of new rules relating typical network configurations to observable kinetic behavior. Any configuration producing behavior contrary to observation cannot be correct, so incorrect networks can be rejected by whole classes instead of one by one. For modeling, the book provides general equations and algorithms applicable t

First printing riddled with errors.......2006-02-07
The first printing is riddled with errors. Freeman have published on their Web site 10 pages of errata, but I have found yet another error. I am left wondering how many errors remain, even in the newer, corrected, printing.
The examples are often worked with such abridgment that the student is left staring across either conceptual or algebraic chasms.
Too much page space is burned on problems, and not enough on exposition.
My perennial pet peeve for modern textbooks: the coated paper makes the book too heavy. I had to rip it into individual chapters to make it tolerable. And, of course, it is too expensive.
Gives me the creeps everytime I see it.......2004-07-29
What a bulky book, my all time companion during those long walks to the city library. How I would open you and reopen you and close you and reclose you every other day! How I kept all my stuff in you so that I might not have to spend hours searching for the appropriate answer pages! How I'd cuss when you got some of the answer solutions wrong! How I'd get annoyed when your problems did not occur in real world situations. How I'd struggle to keep my mind when I encountered on of those Niko problems. I still remember the dread I used to feel when I saw a three-dot problem. And the agony that a two-dot would sometimes be harder than a three dot. You gave me many hints to solve those problems, but why didn't you give sufficient explanations? Why? Why did you make me do the same lengthy problem with a differnt set of numbers and then speculate about the different results? Did I learn anything conceptually from you? I think it was all plugging in stuff, and making sense of diagrams. That's why now all that I've learnt seems like a distant memory. You are not welcome in my thoughts any more, oh bulky book!
dazed and confused.......2003-06-30
Terrible book - often when explaining problems, it skips steps (so you have no idea how they got from one point to the next), and they show so few examples. Over 100 homework problems for each chapter, with only the odd-#ed answers in back (no explanations, or even-#ed answers), and most of the problems have nothing similar that are explained in the chapter!
I'm having a rough time comprehending this book, and I'm an 'A' calculus student.
Very excelent........2003-05-12
The first equation that you see in this book is that "Tipler= Quality"
At first, this seems a little pompous and presumptuous. But it is alas, oh so true. When I first started physics this year, I had no experience of calculus. I thought taking a physics course based in calc was going to be hard. I was wrong, as Tipler's explinations were so well done that I found the math to be easy. Although its true that most of my physics learning came from my high school teacher, the only thing he lectured on where things that came almost directly from Tipler. This was convinient if I didn't feel like taking extensive notes. By the end of the simester, I had mechanics mastered. With Tipler by my side, the biggest challenge in learning physics was overcoming my own lazyness.

Achieves its goal.......2007-06-08
This book seems to achieve its goal very nicely, namely, to be a general physics textbook. It competes with the usual suspects: Halliday/Resnick, Serway, etc. This seems to be a market where, if the books are too sophisticated, they sure aren't going to be adopted.
The educational system in most countries seem to emulate this recipe of physics with as little mathematics as possible and a "general course" where students are merely introduced to physics at a level only slightly higher than high-school level. This is one of those books. Whether we like it or not, this is how it is even, apparently, in top institutions in the U.S.
That said, I will disclose that I can't stand Halliday/Resnick, and thought that Serway was too much of a marketing stunt. Tipler, on the other hand, seemed quite reasonable. I think this book stands out for: 1) lack of cruft; 2) clear explanations, that rely on math, rather than verbosity; 3) a sensible choice of *relevant* examples; 4) a nice pedagogical resource, whereby the author gives you an example and subsequently does another one ("You try it"), with step-by-step handholding.
Overall, of the books I used, this was more to my taste. I happened to notice that some Physics teachers (for undergraduates) also seemed to like this book more (and, in fact, I had a teacher describe Halliday/Resnick as a "chronic disease", one that our institution could not get rid of, because the book had been around for so long, and we had so many copies at the library - our libraries in Brazil don't typically throw out old editions). Other books I enjoyed were Alonso & Finn, and McKelvey & Grotch (these two out-of-print, unfortunately).
There are many more books out there for the undergraduate that wishes to have a more sophisticated and mathematically sophisticated understanding of Physics. However, it seems these more "mundane" courses are a pervasive practice. And there's nothing you can do about it. And you are not to blame. So, at least choose a nicely crafted learning tool.
Useful Supplement to Textbook.......2007-01-12
I bought this study guide because there were some concepts that I did not completely understand after going to class and reading the textbook. This study guide goes over difficult ideas and also addresses potential pitfalls. The key concept outlines of the chapter are great for reviewing before class to prepare for lecture.
Just awful........2006-12-21
This is not coming from a student bitter about receiving bad grades in his class; I got a 4.0 in both semesters of engineering physics. I did this, however, despite this book and not because of it. The wording is needlessly abstruse, the sample problems are worked out poorly and, quite often, the answers in the back of the book are incorrect.
I used Douglas C. Giancoli's physics text as a supplement for review before my exams and, without exception, the material was presented in a more concise and understandable fashion than in the Tipler/Mosca travesty.
There must have been happier moments in my life than when I sold this text back to my co-op, but none currently come to mind.
Great book for excellent learning.......2005-07-14
Contrary to what some of the reviewers have said, this book is great for self-study. I know this from experience. It is mostly clear and logical, although there are certain parts that are frustrating because of lack of clarity. There are some examples that are confusing, and, as explained by a previous reviewer, sometimes variables are not explained in new equations.
The best thing about this book is that it has many great, easy to understand examples at varying difficulties. The graphics are excellent and this really helps sometimes. The problem sets at the end of the chapters are good. If you can do the examples and problem sets at the end of the chapters (and I know you can because the author does a wonderful job at explaining the subjects) you will find books on classical mechanics and electromagnetism to be extremely easy.
This book comes with online supplements, but you probably will not use them. They are worthless. Do not waste your time trying to use the online supplements.
UPDATE: I scored 5's (the highest possible score) on my advanced placement physics C exams(both mechanics and electricity and magnetism). I never took a course or had a teacher for this level of physics so my score must have been due to this book!
A review from someone who is also NOT retarded OR stupid.......2005-01-30
The previous reviewer apparently feels that anyone who doesn't agree with him is "retarded" or "stupid". To criticize or classify someone for their spelling errors is pointless and juvenile. It contributes nothing to the book's evaluation. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, regardless of their spelling ability. After all, I could point out that he spelled "retarded" as "retarted" immediately before his spelling comment. Does that make him retarded or stupid? I doubt it. However, in regard to his book review, he is only half correct. The subject is a difficult one, especially for those who are first encountering it. Where he is wrong is in saying that "the way the book is written has nothing to do with this." The presentation of a subject can make it easier or harder; therefore, the book, along with the instructor, has everything to do with it. I've used many textbooks during my courses of study and my 35+ year career. This one is neither the best nor the worst. Textbooks are seldom presented to students for evaluation before publishing. At best, they are shown to people who are already familiar with the topic. This is usually done to locate errors. Very few reviewers approach a new textbook from the vantage point of a student who is looking at the subject for the first time. This textbook covers the topic sufficiently but it does show a weakness in clarity. When this book is used in a Physics class, it will require an instructor capable of guiding the student over its many rough spots.

When smalltime insurance salesman Walter Huff meets seductive Phyllis Nirdlinger, the wife of one of his wealthy clients, it takes him only minutes to determine that she wants to get rid of her husband--and not much longer to decide to help her do it. Walter knows that accident insurance pays double indemnity on railroad mishaps, so he and Phyllis plot frantically to get Nirdlinger on--and off--a train without arousing the suspicions of the police, the insurance company, Nirdlinger's dishy daughter, her mysterious boyfriend, or Nirdlinger himself. This brief but complex novel is a perfect example of the ordinary-guy-gone-disastrously-wrong story that Cain always pulls off brilliantly.
Book Description
Tautly narrated and excruciatingly suspenseful,
Double Indemnity gives us an X-ray view of guilt, of duplicity, and of the kind of obsessive, loveless love that devastates everything it touches. First published in 1936, this novel reaffirmed
James M. Cain as a virtuoso of the roman noir.

Tangling With a Cobra.......2007-05-30
Walter Huff is an insurance agent who visited a client about renewing an automobile insurance policy. Mr. Nirdlinger is out but his wife is in. They'll call him. When Huff gets a call he finds the wife is interested in an accident policy for her husband (without his knowledge)! Huff immediately senses the danger in this; but there is a fatal attraction. Walter agrees to murder for Phyllis and the money, even though Phyllis has no cause to resent her husband. Walter explains the three things needed for a successful murder: help, planning, and audacity (as in a gangland slaying). Walter compares insurance to making a bet that something wouldn't happen (Chapter 2). Then daughter Lola Nirdlinger wants a loan against her boyfriend's car. Months pass, then an accident changes Mr. Nirdlinger's travel plans (Chapter 4). They kill Mr. Nirdlinger according to plan (Chapter 5). Chapter 6 tells about overnight train travel in those days. When Walter returns home he realizes he is now in Phyllis' power (Chapter 7).
After the accident the insurance investigators interviewed the people on the train. The insurance company believed it was a suicide so they wouldn't have to pay. Keyes uses the actuarial tables to dispute that theory, but he has no proof. It was important for a minister to be present at the Coroner's Inquest. Keyes surmises how it could have been done, and decides to have Phyllis watched. Lola has suspicions about Phyllis (Chapter 9). Lola tells Walter more about her boyfriend Sachetti, and they begin to spend time together. Lola has learned more about Phyllis! In Chapter 11 Walter decides to act for his safety in Griffith Park at midnight. He carefully plots this. But Phyllis has plans as well. Chapter 12 tells what happened that night. [The 1944 film changed the story, the book will be more intriguing.] Keyes in the Claim Department views the human race as "a little bit crooked" (Chapter 13). We learn why Sachetti was interested in Phyllis! [The 1944 film omitted this part.] Then there is still another surprise! Chapter 14 ties up the loose strings to this story.
The book is more complex than the 1944 film, and a better story. Read it before you see the film. [The basic story is similar to Shakespeare's "Hamlet".]
Although I'm not very fond with James M. Cain's works...............2007-03-07
...I thought "Double Indemnity" was one of the finest crime/thriller novels that I've ever read. Walter Huff is an insurance agent who is seduced by a woman named Nirdlinger. They decide to kill Nirdlinger's husband in order to collect his wealth. But then this leads to serious consequences.
With memorable characters, terrific tension, and good pacing, "Double Indemnity" is highy recommended if you're in the mood for murder and money. And try not to judge this book by its publication date. Crime and punishment from the 1930's can be a very interesting thing.
Classic Film Noir in Well Written Prose.......2007-01-18
I saw Billy Wilder's 1948 movie before I read the original 1936 novel by Cain; the movie was exceptional - well paced, taught storytelling. The book is even better.
This is a simple story of love, murder, and insurance fraud. But the complexity of the written landscape by Cain is absolutely engulfing. Walter Huff, a scheming, self-serving insurance agent falls for Phyllis and they scheme to kill her husband for love and the insurance check. But, of course it is never that easy!
With snappy, well constructed dialog, Cain spins film noir better than any camera can.
Double the Fun.......2006-05-05
James Cain followed up his controversial THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE with another thin crime novel DOUBLE INDEMNITY. Like POSTMAN, it brings the reader into a world of moral indifference. In other words, it's great!
The action follows insurance agent Walter Huff, who has at some point come up with an insurance scheme to off a guy and collect the insurance. He discovers his partner in crime, Phyllis Nirdlinger, when she inquires about accident insurance for her husband. But this is James Cain writing. It is not going to be that easy, is it? You bet not.
Phyllis turns out to be way, waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy more dangerous than Walter ever imagined her to be. He learns too late that he is just one more patsy in Phyllis's own plans, much bigger and nastier than the ones Walter himself formulated. Complicating the matter is Phyllis's step-daughter, Lola, whose wholesomeness actually touches some soft spot in Walter's heart.
Perhaps Cain mellowed a little bit between POSTMAN and DOUBLE INDEMNITY. The main character actually feels some degree of guilt for the crime and actually shows concern for someone besides himself. Jeez, what a softie. Do not worry, though. There is enough human darkness here to satisfy even the hardest of readers' hearts.
The darkest side of a railroad track.......2006-04-14
At some point, the narrator of James M. Cain's "Double Indemnity" starts a chapter stating "there is nothing so dark as a railroad track in the middle of the night". The scene that is set in the railroad track is one of the most important in this novella noir about love, deceit and betrayal. It is not impossible to make some connections between this mentioned dark and the dark side of the human soul.
This is a short book and very fast, and, at the same time, very interesting. Cain makes his characters and plot very engaging and dry as well. There isn't much time for many descriptions and digressions. The writer is very matter-of-fact throughout the whole narrative, keeping focus on his story. And as a consequence, keeping his readers' eyes glued to the pages.
The main characters are beautifully developed little by little as the story progress. As such they are able to surprise the readers -- since we don't know everything about them. And they really surprise us! By the end of the book they have gone through the most shocking transformations -- so have the readers' sensibility. This is a classic novel that will last forever.
