Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars IT COVERED BOTH TECHNIQUES AND PRECAUTIONS.......2003-03-30

Apart from hinting that this book is more expensive than I had expected, there is no negative comment I have for it.
It is a well-defined lab manual, which will be useful for both students and investigative scientists. The book covered all aspect of microbiology: including related parasitology topics.
It explained various methods used in the identification and classification of all types of microorganisms. High-level undergraduates should appreciate the directives it gave concerning culture-media preparation, as well as sequential isolation of bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and microscopic algae. The same applies to its handling of general microscopy: including the advantages and disadvantages of each type of microscope. This is a very fine companion, which discussed every technique and precaution used in contemporary microbiology lab.

4 out of 5 stars La microbiologia.......2002-05-08

                            Book Description

Fractals and surfaces are two of the most widely-studied areas of modern physics. In fact, most surfaces in nature are fractals. In this book, Drs. Barabási and Stanley explain how fractals can be successfully used to describe and predict the morphology of surface growth. The authors begin by presenting basic growth models and the principles used to develop them. They next demonstrate how models can be used to answer specific questions about surface roughness. In the second half of the book, they discuss in detail two classes of phenomena: fluid flow in porous media and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). In each case, the authors review the model and analytical approach, and present experimental results. This book is the first attempt to unite the subjects of fractals and surfaces, and it will appeal to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in condensed matter physics and statistical mechanics. Because of the technological importance of MBE, it will also be of interest to scientists, particularly materials scientists, working in industry and research. Interested readers may view a sample chapter by contacting our web site at http://www.cup.org/onlinepubs/Fractals/fracts1.html.

5 out of 5 stars Good on self affine scaling.......2004-04-14

I'm not into surfaces and have only used a small part of this book for one purpose: for an introduction to self affine scaling. The topic is presented very systematically, with nice examples. Especially nice is the binomial model of multiaffine scaling. Multiaffine scaling is supposed to appear in "soft" fluid turbulence and is often mislabeled multifractal scaling, which is a horse of a different color altogether!

5 out of 5 stars Fractal Concepts in Surface Growth.......2001-05-16

This is the first book I have so far encountered on interface growth to treat the subject in a simple, intuitive and entertaining manner. All the basic mathematical concepts are explained, the book is easy to read and contains plenty of illustrations and examples from real life. Barabasi and Stanley show how processes ranging from accumulation of snow on car windows, to bacterial colony growth on agar surfacees, are governed by similiar mathematical laws. Exercises are conceptual as well as mathematical, with many questions asking for discussion or further research. This book is essential for novices and experts alike.

                                Book Description

This book addresses the physics of phase transitions in chemical compositions and crystal or molecular structures. It deals with the control of the scale and distribution of microstructural features that are associated with different phases. Here a mathematical framework with the capacity to describe and predict the evolution of phase interfaces. Some of the relevant developments are summarized, with emphasis being placed on the contributions made by those researchers whose works are printed in this volume.

The study of interfaces within and between materials is central to materials science research. For example, interfaces play an important role in many of the mechanical and electrical properties of materials, phase transformations, and material microstructures. This book provides an
outstanding overview of the subject, with broad treatments of all aspects of the structure, thermodynamics, kinetics, and properties of interfaces in crystalline materials. Throughout, the authors emphasize conceptual foundations through the exposition of simple models and descriptions of key
experimental observations. With Interfaces in Crystalline Materials in hand, students in materials science, crystallography, and condensed matter physics have a comprehensive and unified survey of the subject at their disposal.

This book is a true magnum opus as it tries to cover not only interfaces but also the effects of interfaces on the behavior of materials; for example, creep, deformation, etc.

                                  Book Description

This book describes the state of the art of our understanding of liquid-crystal interfaces on a molecular level. The interactions of liquid crystal molecules with a surface play an essential role in the operation of liquid crystal displays (LCD's) and other LC devices that are based on the controllable anchoring of LC molecules on polymer coated surfaces.

This book addresses the microscopic interaction between a macromolecule (liquid crystal, polymer) and a wall, using state of the art surface and interface-sensitive experimental techniques, such as Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), Linear and Nonlinear Optical Microscopy and (Dynamic) Light Scattering (DLS). These experimental techniques were complemented with computer simulations and supra molecular chemistry methods to develop controllable polymeric surfaces.

                                      Book Description

Against the background of the high politics of Sixth Dynasty Egypt, a powerful love grows between Rhadopis, a courtesan whose ravishing beauty is unmatched in time or place, and youthful, headstrong Pharaoh Merenra, worshiped by his people as a divine presence on earth.

Rhadopis comes of poor peasant stock, but her star rises until she become the most celebrated woman in the kingdom, entertaining her countless lovers, who include the most powerful men in the realm, with her dancing, singing, and stimulating intellectual conversation in her white palace on an island in the Nile. Despite the attention and the endless stream of suitors, however, Rhadopis's heart remains cold and loveless -- until events conspire in the strangest of ways to bring her to the attention of Pharaoh himself. From there the two of them embark on a journey of intense passion that is totally absorbing and ultimately tragic. As their obsession for one another burns wildly, they become caught up in the violent turbulence of the politics of the day -- Merenra through his desire to sequester the properties of the priesthood and Rhadopis by her efforts to control the march of destiny and avoid their untimely but inevitable fate. But for Rhadopis, who has played with men's minds and danced on the scattered shards of their broken hearts, and Pharaoh, who has sought to flaunt ancient tradition for his own ends, can the power of love ultimately offer protection?
