    Book Description

This book provides the first comprehensive analysis of how aerosols form in the atmosphere through in situ processes as well as via transport from the surface (dust storms, seas spray, biogenic emissions, forest fires etc.). Such an analysis has been followed by the consideration of both observation data (various field observational experiments) and numerical modeling results to assess climate impacts of aerosols bearing in mind that these impacts are the most significant uncertainty in studying natural and anthropogenic causes of climate change.

            Book Description

The Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds series attempts to make the extraordinarily complex and diverse field of heterocyclic chemistry as organized and readily accessible as possible, presenting a basic reference collection for practicing researchers. Volume 60, Oxazoles: Synthesis, Reactions, and Spectroscopy, Part A proves the sole comprehensive resource on the synthetic chemistry of oxazoles–heterocyclic compounds containing nitrogen and oxygen, specifically five-membered, unsaturated rings. Oxazoles have a wide variety of applications in synthetic organic chemistry and have been found in numerous natural products such as hennoxazole, thiangazole, calyculin, halicondrins, pyrenolide, virginiamycin, amphotericin, and phorboxazoles. This volume provides an authoritative review of the literature since 1983, highlights compounds of commerical importance, and includes in-depth coverage of the synthesis, reactions, and spectroscopic and physical properties for each class of compounds. It also discusses in detail the exciting developments on the use of chiral bioxazolines in asymmetric synthesis.

              Book Description

This volume in the Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds series presents a comprehensive review of the quinoxaline literature from 1975 to the present (2002), updating Volumes 5 and 35. It provides an alphabetical table of known simple quinoxalines, including new compounds discussed in this volume and their physical data, as well as the pyrazines from the original volumes. Biological activities, spectral or other physical studies, and other such materials appear at appropriate points in the text. The in-depth coverage includes synthesis, reactions, spectroscopic, and physical properties for each class of compounds.
Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds, Volume 61: Supplement II provides the most up-to-date summation of knowledge of the synthetic chemistry of quinoxalines.

Physicists think they have discovered the top quark. Biologists believe in evolution. But what precisely constitutes evidence for such claims, and why? Scientists often disagree with one another over whether or to what extent some evidence counts in favor of a theory because they are operating with different concepts of scientific evidence. These concepts need to be critically explored. Peter Achinstein has gathered some prominent philosophers and historians of science for critical and lively discussions of both general questions about the meaning of evidence and specific ones about evidence for particular scientific theories.

                          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Secrets and the strength of love.......2006-10-13

One of Trollope's later and shorter novels, this tells the story of a woman who keeps secret from her husband a previous engagement to another man; when he finally finds out about it he leaves her. What happens is this: Cecilia Holt decides to break off her engagement to the neglectful Sir Francis Geraldine. Later she meets and falls in love with George Western, who has also been jilted; he tells her about his past, but she doesn't reveal hers to him, and then they marry. But Sir Francis writes to Western and spills the beans; appalled by Cecilia's silence and soon suspicious of her motives, leaves her. By the end all is made right by Western's sister Lady Grant.

The central episode that drives the novel seems like a mountain made out of a molehill today, but Cecilia Holt is an excellently drawn character - strong and determined (maybe too much so). She refuses Western's money after he leaves her and expects him to apologize to her when he returns. Trollope's realism is in full control when at the end Cecilia has romantic notions regarding Western's return, but Trollope will have none of it; Western's stoicism is something Cecilia is just going to have to accept. Some of the secondary scenes, especially those involving Sir Francis and Miss Altifiorla, are quite humorous. This novel doesn't rank with Trollope's very best work, but it's still entertaining and interesting in its own way.

1 out of 5 stars Best Kept in the Dark.......2006-07-22

I am an avid fan of Trollope, but even so, I was unwilling to work through this difficult-to-read double-column format wrapped in a garish cover. I presume the original was in a 19th century magazine and this is merely photo-offset, but the product is clumsy and wearisome to the eye.

5 out of 5 stars an affirmation of marriage.......1999-12-04

An editorial review mentioned that this is a story about the near-destruction of a marriage. I see it, rather, as the affirmation of true marriage. Both the hero and heroine--having been misled about the character of previous betrothal connections must overcome feelings of distrust and personal pride to come to a true understanding . . . Trollope uses this novel to show that honesty and integrity are not just virtues; they are essentials. In a time when so many best-sellers end in divorce, Trollope's characters come to the end of this short novel stronger and more true--and still married. And those who are untrue are exposed along the way.

4 out of 5 stars The amostphere is good.......2002-10-15

The story is about 3 children namely Clara, Noel and Bosie. Since their father falls ill, their mother need to take care of their father and earn money so no people can take care of them, so they need to live with their grandmother who they never been met.
Before they went to their grandma¡¦s home, they were afraid because they didn¡¦t know their grandma¡¦s personalities and also afraid she loses temper when she saw her grandson and daughter. But they have a happy life lived with grandma and granddad. Their grandma is called Elizabeth; she asked the children call her ¡§Liz¡¨.
They seem enjoy living with their grandma, but when David came to their house, their live were change into worry. If you want to know who David is and what happen with him, you should read this book.

At the first, when I saw this book at my school library, the book cover attracts me to pick up from the shelves. It gives me a secret and mystery impression, since I like to read this kind of books, so I borrowed it from the school library.
After I read it, the story is a historical of Elizabeth¡¦s family. I am a bit disappointed. But the story seems good, so I haven¡¦t change my book and continuous to read this story.
In ¡§KEPT IN THE DARK¡¨, the character are described very active and interest, the most character I like is Mrs. Battle, it is because she¡¦s outlook is funny and her personality seems like myself.
Moreover, the arrangement of the story is good; it is because the peak of the story is wonderful! Since the author can make an exiting atmosphere, I was one of the characters not a reader!
But the word used in the passages is differ cal, not easy to understand.

Overall, I would recommend this story book to my friend and classmates; I hope they would enjoy it!

3 out of 5 stars Kept In The Dark.......2001-03-16

Boise, Carla, and Noel's father is ill and their mother is left with no choice but to leave them with their grandparents who she has not gotten along with well for a long time. The children are frightened to be left with them, because to them it was like living with complete strangers. Grandpa kept saying David's coming next week and grandma never said anything like she was not happy about it, although the children had no idea who he was they were very curious and would soon find out. This book was not the greatest that I have read, I have not read any other books by Nina Bawden and probably won't. It was all from europe so some of the phrase sounded funny, and the english was a bit different. I would not have read the book on a personal note, but it was for school and so I did, I chose the book because the cover made it look interesting, I guess their right when they say don't judge a book by it's cover. I do like this particular quote from the book because it was ironic, I think. "It's odd staying with strangers who ought not to be strangers. Grandparents. I mean." On page 16. I do know how it feels to go see relatives you never met before, like how they seem to be strangers. I still say the book is not the greatest but it did pick up towards the end. This book is for most people, probably more towards adults.
