Book Description

Designed both to encourage beginning naturalists and to challenge more experienced observers to look at the familiar in new ways, A Field Guide to the Familiar offers an introduction to common plants, animals, and natural phenomena. Beautiful drawings add to the book's refreshing approach to nature study. Organized by the seasons of the year, each chapter focuses on one subject and one learning objective. From fall's first frost to the field crickets of high summer, this innovative guide explores in depth such familiar sights as bumblebees, rainbows, acorns, blueberries, and shooting stars.

Each chapter includes descriptive information to help readers identify each subject, as well as life cycle information that shows how a subject functions within a grander scheme. Readers learn that every plant and animal -- even the atmosphere -- has its own story, and they begin to perceive the natural world as whole, interconnected, and continuous. Whether read sequentially or used as a field companion or handy desk reference, A Field Guide to the Familiar gives every reader a sense of the natural world as an accessible -- and endlessly fascinating -- place.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A fine book by a first-rate nature writer . . ........1999-08-21

Lawrence, a naturalist and newspaper columnist, knows a great deal about a great many things, and she parades her knowledge graciously and triumphantly in this field guide to familiar wildlife. The book is not an identification manual. Rather it collects short essays on topics ranging from fall wildflowers to shooting stars. All are solidly researched and elegantly written, and throughout run Lawrence's gentle humor and original insights. I recommend this book to nature lovers everywhere!

        Description:
Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is a proven technology for detection of vapor phase chemical warfare agents. The technology is suitable for field portable instrumentation due to its small size, high sensitivity, speed of analysis, and low power consumption. However, it suffers from a limited dynamic range and potential difficulties in identifying compounds in complex matrices. The use of gas chromatography (GC) coupled to IMS can overcome the difficulty of chemical identification in mixtures by separating the sample into individual components before detection. Using this approach, IMS technology has previously been adapted to detect biological aerosols using an open tube pyrolyzer and a short GC column (Py-GC-IMS). The open sample introduction tube of a Py-GC-IMS instrument would be a convenient configuration to accept aerosol particulates, and while viewed as needed for aerosol trapping, is not optimal for liquid chemical analyses. To examine the usefulness of an existing Py-GC-IMS system for analysis of chemicals in water, an existing open-port sample interface was replaced with a septum-equipped closed tube injector to contain analyte vapors resulting from liquid injection. Tributylphosphate (TBP) was used as a surrogate chemical warfare agent, and aqueous injections into both closed and open tube assemblies were performed. Sample introduction into the closed tube inlet was also accomplished using solid phase microextraction (SPME) preconcentration. The limit of detection for TBP using an open tube, closed tube, and closed tube configuration with SPME sample introduction was 0.980, 0.196, and 0.0098mg/L, respectively.

          Description:
A gas chromatography/ion trap mass spectrometry method was developed for the analysis of simazine, atrazine, cyanazine, as well as the degradation products of atrazine, such as deethylatrazine and deisopropylatrazine in environmental water samples. Isotope dilution technique was applied for the quantitative analysis of atrazine in water at low ng/l levels. One liter of water sample spiked with stable isotope internal standard atrazine-d"5 was extracted with a C"1"8 solid-phase extraction cartridge. The analysis was performed on an ion trap mass spectrometer operated in MS/MS method. The extraction recoveries were in the range of 83-94% for the triazine herbicides in water at the concentrations of 24, 200, and 1000ng/l, while poor recoveries were obtained for the degradation products of atrazine. The relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) were within the range of 3.2-16.1%. The detection limits of the method were between 0.75 and 12ng/l when 1l of water was analyzed. The method was successfully applied to analyze environmental water samples collected from a reservoir and a river in Hong Kong for atrazine detected at concentrations between 3.4 and 26ng/l.

            Description:
New methods have been developed and applied successfully for the determination of dissolved inorganic, organic and total carbon in water samples. The new methods utilize two instrumental setups, Reagent-Free(TM) Ion Chromatography (RF(TM)-IC) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was measured in untreated samples along with Cl^-, F^- and SO"4^2^- using RF(TM)-IC and by in-line mixing with 0.1M HNO"3 to enhance CO"2 removal in the nebulizer, followed by ICP-AES analysis. Total dissolved carbon (TDC) was measured by in-line mixing with 0.1M NaOH following ICP-AES analysis. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was obtained as the difference between DIC and TDC. Only non-volatile organic carbon could be detected by the present method. The workable limits of detection obtained in the present study were 0.5mM (RF(TM)-IC) and 0.1mM (ICP-AES) for dissolved inorganic and organic carbon, respectively. The power of the new methods lies in routine analysis of DIC and DOC in samples of natural waters of variable composition and salinity using analytical techniques and facilities available in most laboratories doing water sample analysis. The techniques are sensitive and precise, can be automated using gas-tight sample vials and auto-samplers, and are independent of most elemental interferences with the exception of chloride overload by saline samples when using RF(TM)-IC. The new methods were successfully applied for analysis of DIC and DOC in selected samples of natural and synthetic waters.

              Description:
A method for measuring the concentrations of the five regulated haloacetic acids (HAA5) in drinking water is reported. This method uses ion chromatography to separate HAA5 species, followed by post-column reaction with nicotinamide and detection of the fluorescent products. The result of method detection limit, accuracy, precision, linearity and interference studies are reported. The on-line monitoring method is compared directly to USEPA 552.3 in Memphis drinking water. Though not meant to replace the USEPA 552.3 for compliance monitoring, the proposed method does offer attractive alternatives considering the ease of automation and application of on-line monitoring directly from drinking water distribution systems.

                        Book Description

Intended for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in biophysics, physiology, medical physics, cell biology, and biomedical engineering, this wide-ranging text bridges the gap between introductory physics and its application to the life and biomedical sciences. This extensively revised and updated fourth edition reflects new developments at the burgeoning interface between physics and biomedicine. Among the many topics treated are: forces in the skeletal system; fluid flow, with examples from the circulatory system; the logistic equation; scaling; transport of neutral particles by diffusion and by solvent drag; membranes and osmosis; equipartition of energy in statistical mechanics; the chemical potential and free energy; biological magnetic fields; membranes and gated channels in membranes; linear and nonlinear feedback systems; nonlinear phenomena, including biological clocks and chaotic behavior; signal analysis, noise and stochastic resonance detection of weak signals; image formation and description; image reconstruction; hearing and medical ultrasound; atoms and light; near infrared scattering; optical coherence tomography; infrared radiation; ultraviolet light; radiometry and photometry; the interaction of photons and charged particles in tissue; radiological physics and the use of x-rays in diagnosis and therapy; nuclear medicine; and magnetic resonance imaging. Discussion of theory is more closely linked to experiment, and stochastic processes are presented as an integral part of biological systems. A prior course in physics and in calculus is assumed.

Over 800 problems (a 44% increase from the third edition) are included to test the student's understanding and to provide additional biological examples. A solutions manual is available to instructors. Each chapter has an extensive list of references as well as useful bibliographies for further reading. Intermediate Physics for Medicine and Biology is also ideal for self study and as a reference for workers in medical and biological research.

                        5 out of 5 stars A must-read for physicists interested in biology.......2007-10-08

Intermediate Physics for Medicine and Biology (Biological and Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering) is now in its fourth edition, and gets better every time. This is the ideal starting place for biologists who need to use physics to explain something biological or physiological, or physicists who want to apply quantitative physics theories or techniques to biological phenomena or delve into medical or biological physics. The derivations and illustrations are clear and useful, and the book provides detailed explanations rather than just decreeing the applicable equation for a particular phenomenon. The rich set of problems makes it an ideal textbook for physics or biomedical engineering or quantitative biology; the breadth of the material makes it a wonderful reference book.

Busted Flush Press is excited to announce the release of The Man Who Died Laughing / The Man Who Lived by Night, the first two mysteries in David Handler s Edgar Award-winning series featuring celebrity ghostwriter Stewart Hoagy Hoag & his faithful basset hound, Lulu. Out of print for almost 20 years, these books are nearly impossible to find, even online or in used bookstores. In The Man Who Died Laughing, Hoagy & Lulu find themselves in Hollywood, where Hoagy is ghosting the memoirs of has-been funnyman Sonny Day. When it becomes apparent that someone wants to kill the book, Hoagy discovers that ghostwriting can be murder. In The Man Who Lived by Night, Hoagy is off to London to dig up the secrets of reclusive bad-boy superstar Tristam 'T. S.' Scarr, formerly of the legendary British rock group Us. T.S. is ready to reveal all, in a book destined to become a controversial best-seller. But then someone intends to send Hoagy to the top of the charts with a bullet. Busted Flush Press will reprint all eight of the Hoagy & Lulu mysteries in a series of four omnibus volumes.

5 out of 5 stars The Man Is Back.......2007-01-11

David Handler's Stewart Hoag is suave, debonaire, and witty. As a ghostwriter for celebrities, he works with a range of bizarre characters--but none so strange (and adorable) as Lulu, his persnickety fish-eating dog and assistant detective. The first two volumes of the series have been out of print and it's great to have them available again.
Handler also writes another delightful mystery series starring an odd couple--film critic Mitch Berger and policewoman Des Mitry--in a small Connecticut town.

It's great to finally be able to read the first 2 books of this fantastic, funny series.

Whoever wrote this book really loves us.

As you read it, something happens to you on a different level than the "you" that's reading. It's all about how fundementally, rather than being a single entity, in fact we are a cloud, a zoo, a galaxy of little animals (the cells of your body) all living in a giant, ordered utopia of sharing, mutual aid, self-sacrifice, altruism and love. The funny thing is that as you read it, you can't help but sigh and groan, and yawn and stretch, and feel all these appreciative little glows and tingles as all these hidden benefactors feel appreciated for the first time. It's truly better than sex!

Let's hope they republish soon. If you can't wait, books along the same lines (without quite the same magical supernatural side-effects) include "Ageless Body, Timeless Mind" by Deepak Chopra, and a great fictional book "Blood Music" by Greg Bear.

In the early 80s, Stewart Hoag ("Hoagy") was proclaimed to be "the first new literary voice of the 80s" by the New York Times. Now it's the late 80s, and Hoagy is reduced to ghost writing a biography for Sonny Day, nicknamed "The One," formerly of the Martin-Lewis-esque team Knight & Day. Get it?
                                  OK, everybody sing:
o/~ Knight and Day, You are The One ... o/~
Like Martin & Lewis, Knight & Day had The Big BreakUp. The Why of it is at the center of the mystery. Hoagy's sidekick is his Basset Hound, Lulu. This reviewer's Basset, LucyIndaSky, wishes Lulu would have had a bigger role. This reviewer wishes this book would have moved along better. (o/~ "Get along. Little Doggies!" o/~)
No one dies until page 123 out of 184. This would not work for dear Jessica Fletcher, who manages to have a dead body by the 1st commercial in every Murder, She Wrote, and it doesn't work well here either.
The book meanders from Coast to Coast - New York to LA and back and forth. It is an exercise in Celebrity Name Dropping, including the real Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Dino even comes to the funeral, when Handler finally gets around to giving us a funeral to go to.

I pride myself in finishing what I start. Reading this book was one of those times where I had to put in an "effort" to finish what I began. The writing was good, but too often nonsensical. To those who say "but it's part of a series," I say, why didn't the publisher note this on the cover. I realize the answer is few people will first buy and read the fifth book in a series without reading the first. That is why I would have chosen to know it was part of a series. The entire time I read about Jack Erthmun, the echoing detective, I felt as though I had missed something. Horrific murders, half eaten corpses with their mouths full of chocalate, beautiful nude murderesses, a haunted small cabin in the country.....were all interesting in and of themselves, but there was no narrative flow and this kept me from "getting into" the book. It almost seemed as though I was reading a book of short stories with no common theme. Maybe Mr. Wright could set me straight and explain what the point was.

                                          1 out of 5 stars Worst Ever.......2006-02-19

While it makes sense now that I find out this is part of a series, as a stand alone novel, well, it's without question the worst book I've ever read. I'm always angry when I waste time reading an entire book that is as foul as this one, I always like to give a book the benefit of the doubt. I should have stopped reading after the first chapter. If you're a fan, I suppose you're reading the series, if you are considering reading this as a stand alone, don't. Even if it's free, even if you are stranded on a deserted island and it's the only book that washes up with you. You'll be disappointed in the complete lack of plot, ridiculous characters, and completely unsatisfactory 'ending'.

5 out of 5 stars Some people don't seem to realize...........2004-02-19

"Laughing Man" is the fifth in Mr. Wright's "Strange Seed" ("children of the earth") series, begun, of course, with "Strange Seed" (1978, Everest House, then pb by Playboy and TOR Books), and followed by "Nursery Tale," "The Children of the Island," and "The People of the Dark." Those who haven't read at least one of these books won't completely understand "Laughing Man." I've read all of them and I found "Laughing Man" quite absorbing.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable But Falls Apart.......2004-02-08

In "Laughing Man", one could argue that the story falls apart the same as the character does. That his world spirals into madness and confusion, and we, as readers, are expected to take the ride with him. Okay, that's fine. I understand. But confusion does not satisfy my need for a solid, scary story. I'm someone who needs a payoff. Yes, the book is well written and starts off very powerful, but I had to work hard to get through the last 100 pages. I usually love this writer, and although I was still entertained by "Laughing Man", I would recommend some of T.M.'s other work for new readers. "The Last Vampire" and "Sleepeasy" are both much better.

2 out of 5 stars Pretentious and overly elliptical.......2003-11-15

Jack Erthmun ,the protagonist of this book ,is an NYPD homicide detective of deeply unothodox hue.A sufferer from echolalia-a tendency to repeat the last words of what the last person said to him -he is withdrawn ,solitary and has working methods that trouble his superiors. He seems almost to bond with the dead-------he "hears" them speak andthey feed him clues .
He is assigned to a series of notably brutal killings--the victims have chocolate stuffed into their mouths and have been cannibalised. The slayers are a series of women who are clearly not of natural origin ,and there are clear signs that Jack himself is linked in some way to them ,and may himself be the product of a union between his mother and one of these creatures who home is in the woods near the family residence in the Adirondacks.

The book -initially tightly controlled and unsettling -spirals out of control and gets more and more ambiguous as it develops .Indeed the open ended conclusion suggests to me that Mr Wright himself did not know how to end the book .
Some scenes are of a gut clenching intensity that belies the author's reputation as a purveyor of "quiet horror" but overall this book confirmed my view of the author from previous encounters-that he is pretentious and does not possess a strong narrative sense.
Others -it is clear from the reviews on this page -rate the book highly but I do not recommend it to devotees of horror fiction who like emphasis on plot and narrative as it sems to me to be deficient in these matters
