Electromagnetic Processes (Princeton Series in Astrophysics)
Robert J. Gould Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0691124442 |
Book Description
This book provides an understanding of the theoretical foundations for the calculation of electromagnetic processes. Photon production processes are particularly important in astrophysics, since almost all of our knowledge of distant astronomical objects comes from the detection of radiation from these sources. Further, the conditions therein are extremely varied and a wide variety of naturally occurring electromagnetic phenomena can be described by limiting forms of the basic theory.
The first chapter reviews some basic principles that are the underpinnings for a general description of electromagnetic phenomena, such as special relativity and, especially, relativistic covariance. Classical and quantum electrodynamics (QED) are then formulated in the next two chapters, followed by applications to three basic processes (Coulomb scattering, Compton scattering, and bremsstrahlung). These processes are related to other phenomena, such as pair production, and the comparisons are discussed.
A unique feature of the book is its thorough discussion of the nonrelativistic limit of QED, which is simpler than the relativistic theory in its formulation and applications. The methods of the relativistic theory are introduced and applied through the use of notions of covariance, to provide a shorter path to the more general theory. The book will be useful for graduate students working in astrophysics and in certain areas of particle physics.

Cost Effectiveness Analysis of the "Sea to SWOS" Training Initiative on the Surface Warfare Officer Qualification Process
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423505514 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A633114. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The number of Surface Warfare Officers (111Xs) in a wardroom directly affects the combat readiness and effectiveness of a warship today. Preliminary research indicates that the "Sea to SWOS" training initiative is seen to have a positive effect on the amount of time it takes an 116X to attain the 111X designation. The initial qualitative analysis highlights a perceived increase in retention and readiness (combat effectiveness) while the quantitative analysis shows additional costs to the Navy Personnel Command and savings in training costs for the Naval Education and Training Command and OPNAV N76, the Surface Warfare Resource Sponsor. This thesis examines the cost-effectiveness of the newly established "Sea to SWOS" training transformation on the Surface Warfare Officer qualification process. This initiative leverages shipboard on-the-job training experiences and interactive computer-based training replacing previously formalized classroom training. As a result, this initiative significantly alters the Division Officer Sequencing Plan (DOSP). Based on the qualitative data, the transformation to the DOSP in the Surface Warfare Officer qualification process will most likely have a positive effect on retention and the utilization of fully qualified 111X Division Officer resources through earlier numbers of 111X attainment and increased officer personnel readiness.

The Design and Optimization of a Power Supply for a One-Meter Electromagnetic Railgun
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 142355003X |
The Storming Media report number is A080104. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A naval electromagnetic railgun would be a considerable asset against a littoral environment. By accelerating projectiles to 3 km/s, a naval railgun would be capable of reaching 300-400 nautical miles. Problem such as rail erosion, energy storage and fire control prevent the railgun from becoming a weapon to date, At the Naval Postgraduate School, the Physics Department continues to investigate and develop concepts to overcome these challenges. As part of the methodology, previous students built a one-meter railgun system for experimentation. The existing 1.6 mF power supply is insufficient to fire this railgun effectively. To design a sufficient power supply a MATLAB code was created to simulate a generated current pulse and to predict the subsequent railgun performance. Interrelated factors such as railgun geometry, muzzle velocity, current density and contact surface area were taken into consideration. Also, tradeoffs in capacitance, projectile mass and residual current were weighed against one another to achieve desired railgun performances. From numerous simulations, this study determined that the one- meter railgun with a 21.5 mF power supply could fire a 0.1 58-kg projectile at a velocity of 1 km/s, and leave a residual current of only 4% of the initial energy once the projectile exits the rails.

The Storming Media report number is A881843. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The screening and management of services members with medical situations that render them non- deployable and unavailable for world-wide assignability is a key manpower and readiness issue. The Navy manages service members unable to perform their duties due to medical reasons utilizing both the Temporary Limited Duty Assignment process (TLD) and the Disability Evaluation System (DES). The objective of this thesis is to analyze the Temporary Limited Duty Assignment process and the Disability Evaluation System, identify' process inefficiencies, compile a reference document and assess the impact on Force Structure and the Individuals Account. An in-depth review of the steps in each process is provided with timeline flow charts. This thesis analyzes the factors that contribute to the amount of time a service member spends in a transient and limited duty status. The thesis also identifies the primary claimants and their roles and responsibilities in each process and analyze the inter-relationship of TLD and DES. An extensive summary of findings is provided with recommendations for streamlining the processes to improve efficiency.

Electromagnetic Processes in Dispersive Media
D. B. Melrose , and R. C. McPhedran Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521410258 |
Book Description
This text presents a systematic discussion of electromagnetic waves and radiation processes in a wide variety of media. The treatment, taken from the field of plasma physics, is based on the dielectric tensor; the authors unify approaches used in plasma physics and astrophysics on the one hand and in optics on the other. Necessary mathematical tools, such as tensor algebra, Fourier transforms, and distributions, are included in Part One. Parts Two, Three, and Four cover the properties of media, the properties of waves in various media, and the general theory of emission processes, such as multipole emission, bremsstrahlung, and cyclotron emission. Part Five is at a more advanced level and covers specific emission processes in greater detail.

Electroweak Processes in External Electromagnetic Fields (Springer Tracts in Modern Physics)
Alexander Kuznetsov , and Nickolay Mikheev Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387400745 |
Book Description
This book explores the intersection of particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology known as astroparticle physics. Extreme electromagnetic conditions present in puslars and other stars allow for investigations of the role of quantum processes in the dynamics of astrophysical objects and in the early Universe. Based in part on the authors' own work, this book systematically describes several methods of calculation of the effects of strong electromagnetic fields in quantum processes using analytical solutions of the Dirac equation and Feynmann diagrams at both the loop and tree levels. The consideration is emphasized at the two limiting cases: the case of a very strong magnetic field, and the case of a crossed field. The presentation will appeal to graduate students of theoretical physics with prior understanding of Quantum Field Theory (QFT) and the Standard Model of Electroweak Interactions, as well as specialists in QFT wishing to know more about the problems of quantum phenomena in external electomagnetic fields.

Classic Russian literature.......2001-04-27
There is much emotion in the book, and the feelings permeate or pulse out of the book, absorbing and drawing in the reader like a good book should. Although set in the 1800's at the time the first Russian revolution ( I'm by no means a historian by the way), the book is not heavily focused on politics as works of Orwell are. The political affairs are a very distant and small prop on this rich stage of a book.
When reading the book, however, I strongly recommend the note taking of names, because some characters are referred to by more than one name. It's not hard to follow if you jot a few reminders down when introduced to each character, this will save much confusion later.
On a final note, if you're reading this book, read it purely for it's own sake. This isn't an adventure book with a climax and an unbelievable series of events at the end, so if that's what you're expecting, you'll regret reading the book. However, if you're after some brilliantly rich literature, with excellent characters, settings, and unfoldings of events, then this is a book I highly recommend. It truly is a masterpiece.
