High-Pressure Shock Compression of Solids IV: Response of Highly Porous Solids to Shock Loading (Shock Wave and High Pressure Phenomena)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 038794995X |
Book Description
Much of the current interest in shock compression of porous solids stems from the desire to bond hard, refractory powders into strong and dense solids. However, while much is known about the effects of shock compression on monolithic materials, the unusual physical and chemical processes that take place when a porous medium is shocked have been little studied thus far. This volume -- with contributions by leading researchers in condensed matter physics, physical chemistry, metallurgy, mechanics, and materials science -- begins to address that gap. The focus is on heterogeneous deformation mechanisms, nonequilibrium thermodynamics, and chemical processes. The contributions discuss such topics as modeling the complex interplay of thermal, mechanical, and chemical processes; experimental data on pore collapse and their interpretation; and synthesis of new materials through shock-induced chemical reactions. By presenting not only the most recent results, but also the open questions that remain, these essays convey the excitement of developing a scientific basis for understanding shock compression of highly porous solids. Topics covered include > Shock Compression Science in Highly Porous Solids > Shock Loading of Porous High Explosives > Continuum Mixture Modeling of Reactive Porous Media > Two-Phase Media Model of Shock Compression with Chemical reaction > Constitutive Modeling of Shock-Induced Reactions in Powder Mixtures > Discrete-element Modeling of Shock Processes in Powders

Amplification of Nonlinear Strain Waves in Solids (Series on Stability, Vibration and Control of Systems, Series a, 9)
Alexey V. Porubov Manufacturer: World Scientific Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9812383263 |
Book Description
This book treats two problems simultaneously: sequential analytical consideration of nonlinear strain wave amplification and selection in wave guides and in a medium; demonstration of the use of even particular analytical solutions to nonintegrable equations in a design of numerical simulation of unsteady nonlinear wave processes. The text includes numerous detailed examples of the strain wave amplification and selection caused by the influence of an external medium, microstructure, moving point defects, and thermal phenomena. The main features of the book are: (1) nonlinear models of the strain wave evolution in a rod subjected by various dissipative/active factors; (2) an analytico-numerical approach for solutions to the governing nonlinear partial differential equations with dispersion and dissipation. This book is essential for introducing readers in mechanics, mechanical engineering, and applied mathematics to the concept of long nonlinear strain wave in one-dimensional wave guides. It is also suitable for self-study by professionals in all areas of nonlinear physics.

Numerical Computation of Stress Waves in Solids
Xiao Lin Manufacturer: Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 352740094X |
Book Description
Stress wave propagation in solids caused by impacts or other impulsive loading is a basic phenomenon encountered in many branches of physical sciences and engineering. This book presents methods for numerical modeling of stress wave propagation in solids. Finite Difference Methods and Boundary Element Methods are mainly used. The author primarily discusses solving two-dimensional problems with direct applications in engineering. The effects of material properties (elasticity, plasticity, viscosity, etc.) on the wave patterns are considered.Customer Reviews:
A book for both, mathematicians and physicists (engineers).......2001-09-02
decomposition. Still, the many aspects where stress
wave modeling differs from CFD are clearly detailed:
the existence of single points and associated
challenges to numerics, the existence of various
constitutive relations, which may render different
numerical schemes most useful, etc. Those points are
amply discussed. --- Overall, the book is written in
such a way as to enable the engineer to grasp
mathematical concepts properly and, in turn, the
mathematician to grasp the physics at hand.

Spectral Finite Element Method: Wave Propagation, Diagnostics and Control in Anisotropic and Inhomogeneous Structures (Computational Fluid and Solid Mechanics)
Srinivasan Gopalakrishnan , Debiprosad Roy Mahapatra , and Abir Chakraborty Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Accessories:
ASIN: 1846283558 |
Book Description
In recent times, the use of composites and functionally graded materials (FGMs) in structural applications has increased. FGMs allow the user to design materials for a specified functionality and therefore have numerous uses in structural engineering. However, the behaviour of these structures under high-impact loading is not well understood. Spectral Finite Element Method: Wave Propagation, Health Monitoring and Control in Composite and Functionally Graded Structures focuses on some of the wave propagation and transient dynamics problems with this complex media which had previously been thought unmanageable.
By using state-off-the-art computational power, the Spectral Finite Element Method (SFEM) can solve many practical engineering problems. This book is the first to apply SFEM to inhomogeneous and anisotropic structures in a unified and systematic manner. The authors discuss the different types of SFEM for regular and damaged 1-D and 2-D waveguides, various solution techniques, different methods of detecting the presence of damages and their locations, and different methods available to actively control the wave propagation responses. The theory is supported by tables, figures and graphs; all the numerical examples are so designed to bring out the essential wave behaviour in these complex structures. Some case studies based on real-world problems are also presented.
This book is intended for senior undergraduate students and graduate students studying wave propagation in structures, smart structures, spectral finite element method and structural health monitoring. Readers will gain a complete understanding of how to formulate a spectral finite element; learn about wave behaviour in inhomogeneous and anisotropic media; and, discover how to design some diagnostic tools for monitoring the health or integrity of a structure. This important contribution to the engineering mechanics research community will also be of value to researchers and practicing engineers in structural integrity.

The Meaning of Consuelo: A Novel (Bluestreak)
Judith Ortiz Cofer Manufacturer: Beacon Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

Book Description
La nina seria, the serious child. That_s how Consuelo_s mother has cast her pensive, book-loving daughter, while Consuelo_s younger sister, Mili, is seen as vivacious-a ray of tropical sunshine. Two daughters: one dark, one light; one to offer comfort and consolation, the other to charm and delight. But something is not right in this Puerto Rican family. Coming of age when American influence threatens to dilute the island_s traditional Spanish customs as well as to harm, perhaps irreparably, its fragile ecology, Consuelo watches her family and culture being torn asunder-much like the island itself.Customer Reviews:

Great coming-of-age story set in Puerto Rico circa 1950's.......2004-05-04
As Consuelo transforms into a senorita she begins to realize that the individuals who are closest to her are becoming a mystery. Her cousin and best friend Patricio all of a sudden reverts into his own world and stops attending school. There are concerning rumors circulating about his relationship with the pueblo's notorious cross-dresser. In addition, Consuelo's younger sister is slowing adopting curious and strange behaviors that include developing a language of her own. There is little solace or comfort with her parents as her mother suspects her father of having an affair with a woman at work. Nothing is at it seems.
THE MEANING OF CONSUELO is filled with frank and sorrowful details of how one girl's transformation to become a woman is burdened without being melodramatic or overdramatic. Judith Ortiz Cofer's prose is sprinkled with colorful Spanish words that add texture to this narrative. I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to others who enjoy multicultural themes or coming-of-age stories.
