Written by the inventor of the technique, this book provides the first complete description of atom probe tomography (APT). This microanalytical technique enables the distribution of all the elements present in a material to be experimentally determined. The instrument known as a three-dimensional atom probe (3DAP) is able to determine the spatial coordinates and the elemental identities of the individual atoms in a metal with atomic resolution. The compositions of small volumes are determined by simply counting the number of atoms of each type within that volume, and thus the technique provides a fundamental measure of the local concentration.
The book provides a brief history of the development of the APT technique and the different types of three-dimensional atom probes that have been developed. The various methods of fabricating the needle-shaped specimens and the procedures used to obtain high resolution images of the specimen with field ion microscopy and to conduct a three-dimensional atom probe analysis are described in detail. Special attention is given to the selection of the experimental parameters required to provide accurate analyses. The methods of visualizing and analyzing the three-dimensional data are described.
The technique has been used to characterize the microstructures of a wide spectrum of metals ranging from simple model systems to complex commercial alloys. A comprehensive list of papers relating to the metallurgical applications of atom probe tomography is included.

Atom-probe field ion microscopy is currently the only technique capable of imaging solid surfaces with atomic resolution, and at the same time of chemically analyzing surface atoms selected by the observer from the field ion image. Field ion microscopy has been successfully used to study most metals and many alloys, and recently good field ion images of some semiconductors and even ceramic materials such as high temperature superconductors have been obtained. Although other microscopies are capable of achieving the same resolution, there are some experiments unique to field ion microscopy--for example the study of the behavior of single atoms and clusters on a solid surface. A beautiful presentation which I much enjoyed in grad school. Now I need to return to the subject, but I can't find it in my lib. So I'm ordering another copy and looking forward to reading it again!

THE book on classical potential theory.......1999-05-06

There are few books left in print on this captivating subject from theoretical mechanics. Kellogg's presentation is clear and mathematically formal. This is an excellent reprint from Dover.

Now, if Dover would only bring back into print MacMillan's "The Theory of the Potential" and maybe try to reprint Sternberg & Smith's U. of Toronto Press published (and out of print) "The Theory of the Potential and Spherical Harmonics", they would have themselves a trilogy to corner the science book market for the classical treatment of potential theory.

It takes its origin in two courses, one elementary and one advanced, which the author has given at intervals during the last ten years, and has a two-fold purpose first, to serve as an introduction for students whose attainments in the Calculus include some knowledge of partial derivatives and multiple and line integrals and secondly, to provide the reader with the fundamentals of the subject, so that he may proceed immediately to the applications, or to - the periodical literature of the day. It is inherent in the nature of the subject that physical intuition and illustration be appealed to freely, and this has been done. However, in order that the ok may present sound ideals to the student, and also serve the ma pmatician, both for purposes of reference and as a basis for further developments, the proofs have been given by rigorous methods. This has led, at a number of points, to results either not found elsewhere, or not readily accessible. Thus, Chapter IV contains a proof for the general regular region of the divergence theorem Gauss, or Greens theorem on the reduction of volume to surface integrals. The treatment of the fundamental existence theorems in Chapter XI by means of integral equations meets squarely the difficulties incident to the discontinuity of the kernel, and the same chapter gives an account of the most recent developments with respect to the Pirichlet problem. Exercises are introduced in the conviction that no mastery of a mathematical subject is possible without working with it. They are designed primarily to illustrate or extend the theory, although the desirability of requiring an occasional concrete numerical result has not been lost sight of. to correct the identification of stories developed by James from his various notes and to reveal many noted Victorians James concealed through use of their initials. Certain omitted portions of the notebooks have also been restored.
This volume is especially noteworthy for the body of new material that it contains. It includes a series of James's pocket diaries in which, amid appointments and luncheon dates, he jotted down observations and ideas for his fiction and commented on his personal relations. Also here are some
fugitive dictated notes, in which James offered an autobiographcial meditation on the "turning Point in his life and the "working out" of a story based on a passion murder by an American acquaintance in the south of France.
James's long out-of-print statements for his unfinished novels The Ivory Tower and The Sense of the Past, scenarios for unfinished plays, the writer's deathbed dictation--all these are here as well. An appendix includes a substantial fragment of a story James never completed, and the book even
provides insight into James's "cash accounts." Everywhere throughout the collection, in writings never intended for the public eye, the artist is seen at work. his private prayers to his Muse and exhortations to himself make exhilarating reading.
