Very useful.......2002-02-24
I bought this book in search of answer to my problems, and I found it. Along with my physician I have a beautiful three months old daughter after three years of wait. I think it ease my spirit.
The only problem is that it haslanguage that sometimes get too scientific to be understood.
Information Packed!.......2001-05-15
I have been going through infertility treatment for two years. I have read a lot of information and talked to several doctors. This book, however, was the most informative literature that I have read yet. I learned things in this book about my infertility that I had not even heard mentioned from my doctors. Dr. Jansen did a wonderful job of explaining a wide range of infertility challenges and answered any question that I had. His book was easy to understand and filled with excellent information. I was able to use some of the information that I learned in this book to have intelligent conversations with my doctors and recommend treatments not suggested.
It is unfortunate that in this day of managed health care we, as consumers, often have to be researchers and take control of our own health care. However, it is to our advantage that we have wonderfully informative references such as this!

Good technical info, but not your best bet.......2001-04-12
This is a comprehensive guide to the medical or technical aspects of infertility. It contains lots of helpful information about the mechanics of getting pregnant and explains in some detail what can prevent pregnancy from happening. It also discusses various forms of treatment, including IVF, GIFT and ZIFT. What prevents this book from being a top-notch fertility resource: (1) some of the information is already out-of-date due to advances in the field (for example, there's no discussion of Antagon, commonly used with injectable fertility meds and IVF, because Antagon was still being developed at the time the book went to print); (2) the author runs an Australian infertility clinic, and his take on the fertility process is somewhat different from his American counterparts (although he does occasionally mention what is commonly done in the US and Britain); (3) a somewhat cumbersome style - e.g. valuable information is taken out of the main text and put into boxes; extremely technical information is mixed in with the practical stuff a patient needs to know. There is lots of valuable information in the book, but you'll need to supplement it with your own research and other reading.
If you are looking for some answers, this is the book!.......2001-02-23
I have read and searched for answers from many sources. I found this book to be a wealth of information! The book is well set up. It goes into depth on specific problems as well going over the basics. The chapters and headings are labelled and organized well. And the index is very extensive and it is easy to find what you are looking for. The author is not only an expert in this field but also is able to get the information across so that readers without a medical degree can understand. I have been able to use this book in conjunction with receiving treatment from a fertility specialist. It confirms and helps me better understand what my doctor is doing. I highly recommend this book!
Book Description
Practical, frank, and compassionate advice from an infertility specialist.
A diagnosis of infertility can be devastating for the woman or couple who is ready for a baby, but those suffering with infertility should know that there is still hope. Fortunately, there's a helpful, compassionate resource that offers readers just that.
The Baby Solution is a step-by-step, practical guide to overcoming infertility. Reassuring and friendly, this book will give readers an insider's view on getting expert care, providing information about intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), and other standard infertility treatments, as well as the latest state-of-the-art care. It also includes such alternative means of improving fertility as acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. This essential resource gives readers tips to help them financially negotiate a field where the cost of treatment is high and the business concerns of clinics and doctors can sometimes override a patient's best interests. This guide will tell readers how to choose a doctor or a clinic that will give them the best chance of success, how to get the most out of their insurance coverage, and how to keep their relationship intact during treatment. Third-party reproduction options, including sperm and egg donation, surrogacy, and embryo donation, are also discussed.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful and reassuring.......2007-04-24
After reading several books regarding infertility, this one most clearly explained diagnosis and treatment. It uses facts, statistics, and the doctor's own experiences to explain choices in infertility treatment. Highly recommended as a resource for all women facing infertility.

Book Description
Soils are one of the world's most important resources, and their protection, maintenance, and improvement is critical to the continuance of life on earth. Soil Fertility, Second Edition, offers thorough coverage of the fertility, composition, properties, and management of soils. This book carries on the tradition of excellence established by authors Henry Foth and Boyd Ellis, leading soil scientists whose previous books in this field have become multi-edition classics. The Second Edition of Soil Fertility has been significantly expanded to include more information on mineralogy, while keeping the thorough coverage of essential topics. The book presents soils as dynamic, constantly changing bodies, and relates soil fertility and management to the mineralogy of their origin. Four new chapters offer updated information on soil charge properties, ion adsorption, exchange and fixation, and soil reaction. There is also a far greater emphasis on environmental issues, reflecting the increasing importance of environmental concerns to agronomists and soil scientists today.

Book Description
Soil fertility is one of the most important factors regulating yield and productivity in both the agricultural and natural ecosystems of the tropics, and maintaining soil fertility has become a key challenge to sustainable development in this region. This book presents the ecological processes and management practices which affect soil fertility and then looks at ways to integrate this knowledge to develop economically feasible solutions. Based on a symposium held at the University of Zimbabwe in May 1996, the volume is partly the result of ten years of research by the Soil Biology and Fertility Project in Zimbabwe and includes contributions from researchers in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. The book is divided into five sections covering nutrient dynamics in soil, decomposition of crop residues, tree-soil-crop interactions in agroforestry and in ecosystem dynamics, and prospects for the future. Essential reading for agronomists, soil scientists and ecologists studying the tropics, this volume is also an important reference for decision-makers in land use and development in tropical countries.

Book Description
Fertility in animals directly reflects access to scarce resources, such as food and territory. In humans, the situation is more complex. Patterns of breast feeding, contraception and ideas about age of marriage and desired family size all affect fertility. This book explores the relation among these factors and access to scarce resources, via income, education and other forms of status.

Book Description
This resource guide is based on extensive work done in several African countries. It is intended to provide user-friendly ways to gather, manage and analyze information and data by applying participatory learning and action research, and to suggest ways to use this knowledge to develop strategies for integrated soil fertility management.
This set constitutes a tool kit. It includes a textbook (Part 1); a collection of cases that explore field experiences with participatory learning and action research (PLAR) (Part 2); a set of all-weather Field Tools on laminated cards (Part 3); a CD-ROM including a software package to assist in analyzing data (Part 4); and a manual with detailed versions of the Field Tools plus a User's Guide to the software (Part 5).
This resource guide aims to democratize knowledge. PLAR is an agricultural extension strategy, a methodology with experimentation and discovery at its heart. It promotes mutual learning that increases understanding among farmers, extension workers and researchers. Though this book is about soil fertility management, its approach is applicable to farmer based plant pest and disease control or management of biodiversity. PLAR starts with the farmer's knowledge and ability to observe. Socio-economic circumstances (e.g. resource availability) and gender concerns are built into the process, and are reflected in farming practices that each individual participant decides to explore.
The main aim of the set is to give field workers practical advice on how to work with farmers to improve soil fertility management. It will also help field practitioners facilitate positive changes within farming communities.

Book Description
A commanding encyclopedia of the history and principles of spaceflight-from earliest conceptions to faster-than-light galaxy-hopping
Here is the first truly comprehensive guide to space exploration and propulsion, from the first musings of the Greeks to current scientific speculation about interstellar travel using "warp drives" and wormholes. Space buffs will delight in its in-depth coverage of all key manned and unmanned missions and space vehicles-past, present, and projected-and its clear explanations of the technologies involved.
Over the course of more than 2,000 extensively cross-referenced entries, astronomer David Darling also provides fascinating insights into the cultural development of spaceflight. In vivid accounts of the major characters and historical events involved, he provides fascinating tales of early innovators, the cross-pollination that has long existed between science fiction and science fact, and the sometimes obscure links between geopolitics, warfare, and advances in rocketry.
Customer Reviews:
Handy reference guide.......2003-07-15
The Complete Book of Spaceflight by David Darling is exactly that, an encyclopedia of space exploration, from Apollo to zero gravity. I have to be honest though; I didn't read this book cover to cover. It's got 3,000 detailed listings in alphabetical order, so it's not exactly light reading material - imagine reading an encyclopedia. I have; however, been using it as a reference book for several months, and it's in that capacity that it really shines.
Darling clearly had the non-technical reader in mind when he wrote up his descriptions, as he steers well clear of jargon (in a jargon-laden industry), and I appreciate that he kept some descriptions very short. For spaceflight terms the book functions as a dictionary, and the explanations are kept to a few sentences. For other topics, the book functions more like an encyclopedia; in some cases several pages are dedicated to a single topic (Gemini Program, spacesuits, etc).
If Darling were standing in front of me, and asked me... "well, what do you think? Is it complete?" I'd have to say yes. It's complete. Everything that has anything to do with spaceflight is in there. I've found it useful to consult entries before writing up some of my own stories; especially if it's been several years since I last wrote about a subject (although some space agencies have great press material, many of the aerospace firms provide descriptions of their own programs drenched in marketing-speak).
Taking its cue from its encyclopedic parent, The Complete Book of Spaceflight is liberally sprinkled with photographs, sidebars and tables of information. Unfortunately, the pages are all black-and-white, so you don't get to see any of the images in colour. I wish the publisher could have splurged on full-colour printing - this would let the book spend equal time on your desk and coffee table (maybe they'll consider it for a future edition?).
The other problem, and this is no fault of the author, is that the business of space exploration is still unfolding. Events in the last few months would have already rewritten chunks of the book (Columbia, Rosetta), so it would be cool to see some kind of Internet site with updates.
I think you'd be happy to have The Complete Book of Spaceflight sitting on your desk or in your bookshelf, standing by to help you navigate some of the more obscure space news journals.
The best book ever printed!.......2003-01-18
For many years I have been a spaceflight enthusiast, but was often disturbed by the lack of a general, easy to read reference book. For example, what if I had hear of the LDEF satellite being retrieved by the Shuttle? What if I had never heard of the LDEF satellite? A few years ago, I would have had to search many books and probably would not find it. Now I can just flip open this encyclopedia to L and in short order find a detailed summary about LDEF (which, by the way, stands for Long Duration Exposure Facility). If I read or see on TV the astronauts going on a Shuttle mission, how do I know who they are? Just look them up. If I hear about a deep-space probe launched by a Proton rocket, I can look up the probe and the Proton.
You might say this is good if you are a spaceflight enthusiast who sometimes needs a reference handy, but what about the average person? For them, it is ten times more useful. If you hear about an aspect of spaceflight and it's just technical jargon ( "Boilerplate? What's that?" or "Trajectory?") or would like to know what the different Apollo missions accomplished, this is the book to get.
The author keeps all of his information interesting and concise and so far, after two months or so of ownership, I have not found one single thing left out. Also, useful information can be gained by just thumbing through the book. ("Aerogel? Never heard of that. I'll read its entry.")You might discover just looking through the book who John Stapp was, or what an aeolipile was, or why the Soviets never made it to the moon, or just what they do at the Goddard Spaceflight Center (and, for that matter, who Goddard was).
BUY THIS BOOK, NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
If there is anything you ever wanted to know about spaceflight, whether you work for NASA or have never heard of the space shuttle, this is the book for you.

Book Description
In this collection of newly translated essays, philosopher and sociologist Raymond Aron chronicles the twentieth century with the authority of an active participant. Combining objectivity with incisive questioning, Aron's reading of movements and people reminds us of what was really at stake. Whether charting the rise of Fascism and Marxism and their respective descents into totalitarianism, or the United States's role as the world's last remaining superpower, Aron was a nondogmatic thinker who emphasized realism over any devotion to theory. The result is history that is less concerned about where it falls on the political spectrum than about getting it right.
Customer Reviews:
Trying hard to find theories and systems: so French.......2004-12-11
Raymond Aron, a witness to the twentieth century, only lived from 1905 to 1983, and was most famous for being a French professor, if not the greatest French professor, as noted in the Introduction by Tony Judt, (See the first note at the end of the Introduction on page xxv). Judt himself has written books on the French left and French intellectuals. I wondered how often Aron might have left France, and Judt reveals that his sense of timing was pretty good. "A Jew and a socialist, he left France following the establishment of the puppet regime at Vichy and joined Charles de Gaulle's Free French organization in London." (p. vii). Like a government that temporarily did not have a country, he must have made a lot of plans for things to do when he was home again. "Upon returning to France Aron served briefly in André Malraux's post-war Ministry of Information before returning to the university world to teach sociology, at the same time taking up what proved to be a lifelong parallel career as a journalist and political commentator." (p. vii).
The essays in this book were originally collected in 1996 in France for publication of a history, and were translated into English for this 2002 Basic Books edition. The first footnote on page 31 has an additional note revealing "All footnotes in this book are Raymond Aron's own notes to his texts," translated from the French 1996 edition. The book has an index, in which there are many entries for Vietcong, Vietminh (League for the Independence of Vietnam), Vietnam war, Johnson and, etc., which lead to a strange footnote on page 362:
"Johnson did not tell the senators that U.S. torpedo boats had been attacked by North Vietnamese gunboats while the South Vietnamese were carrying out commando operations in the same region."
This confusing mix of covert activities is not offered as clarification for the famous resolution of August, 1964, but as an explanation of the American attempt to devise a strategy for Vietnam:
"Like the French colonels in Algeria, many of the president's advisers believed that the techniques of subversion and persuasion could be effective in any circumstances. The commando operations ordered by President Kennedy in May 1961, by way of a riposte to infiltration, then resumed on a larger scale* by Johnson, had nothing in common with the organization of parallel hierarchies. Then there was the conviction, sincere in many cases, that the United States would jeopardize its role all over the world if it accepted defeat in any part of it: This theory was proved by events to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. Last, we must take into account the perhaps inevitable corruption of the men who conduct high politics. . . . To be able to order such bombings in cold blood, and then enjoy a good night's sleep, calls for a kind of transformation. Such a transmogrification may be necessary, but it takes place so easily that it always amazes me when I encounter it in men I used to know before they went into public life."
This is from an essay, "The Imperial Republic," that attempted to understand "The United States and the International System," which was originally published in French in 1984, well after the reunification of Vietnam, the death of former President Johnson, the humiliation of Nixon's efforts to keep anything secret because it was a matter of national security, as he imagined the (expletive deleted) Vietnam war was in a recorded conversation with John Dean that had long been public. But Raymond Aron was dead by then, too, and this publication was actually prepared then by Jean-Claude Casanova, Pierre Hassner, Stanley Hoffmann, Pierre Manent, and Dominique Schnapper. (p. 503, Provenance of Texts). Publication of someone's work after death might allow others to emphasize something which borders on the incredible. In such instances, the crazy bit seems to be the assumption that anyone was getting "a good night's sleep," while artillery was being pounded out for H & I, ambushes at bridges, trails, roads, and rivers had to have some guard up at all hours keeping watch over the kill zone, and people expected to find a newspaper at their front door when they got up to start their day in other parts of the world. Even professors must be up at all hours to find time to put words on paper and keep track of whatever secrets they have been able to discover.
The confusion surrounding the footnote on page 362 has been so great at all times since August 1964, that it looks like a great mistake when a truth slips out in this book: U.S. torpedo boats had been attacked by North Vietnamese gunboats. The gunboats had been directed at a covert operation that was directed on a large scale by Johnson, and the North Vietnamese had expected to run into U.S. destroyers because Johnson had ordered two destroyers to cruise in the Gulf of Tonkin when the undercover operation was also approved, but small swift boats that had attacked a radar installation were able to slip away while the American destroyers were shooting at targets (phantom blips on a screen) that were miles from nowhere. The South Vietnamese were not involved in this operation, in spite of what McNamara told senators off the record. French historians are much more likely to base their accounts on information received from the North Vietnamese, who would be the only Vietnamese who had any knowledge of what happened that night in August 1964, and "U.S. torpedo boats had been attacked by North Vietnamese gunboats" was precisely what the North Vietnamese were saying.
Reading the PENTAGON PAPERS, Aron was unable to figure out Kennedy's policy. "But he refused to send in units of GIs." (p. 361). 15,000 advisers from the Pentagon seems to be about what Bush expected to leave in Iraq before 2003, and he is still trying to make that work.
