Book Description
This book discusses nano- and microfabrication, and how biologists are using such fabricated devices in their research. The goal of the book is to inform materials scientists and engineers about the needs of biologists, and equally, to inform biologists about how nano- and micro-scale fabrication may help to shed light on their own particular research problems. The book also aims to stimulate innovative, productive interactions between materials scientists, engineers, and biologists; and, to explore ways that materials scientists and engineers can exploit biological principles and biological assemblies to produce new and ever-smaller devices. In addition to serving as a resource for scientists in the field, the book is also intended for any biologist or physical scientist who wishes to understand the current state-of-the-art, and what research is currently being done using biological nanofabrication.

An excellent book about a fascinating issue.......2005-09-30
This is an excellent, well-researched, well-written book about a very complex issue. I recommend it to anyone interested in the Navajo-Hopi Land Dispute, or to anyone living in the Four Corners states.
What is the Navajo-Hopi Land Dispute?
Well, over three quarters of the land that used to belong to the Hopi tribe has gradually, since the 1860s, been taken from them and given to the Navajo. Now, of the sprawling reservation at the center of the Four Corners states--Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico, the states whose corners all meet at one point--only the reservation's small, misshapen center, the small hole of a big donut, is Hopi reservation. The rest, on all sides of the Hopi, is Navajo.
In the early-1970s, Congress enacted a law that gave the Hopis back some of their land, but by that time, the land had been lived on by generations of Navajos and become sacred to them.
Some of the Navajos left, and were relocated into shoddy houses with dry wells and no roads to reach them, and many sold or traded their new houses to unethical real estate agents, and ended up with little or nothing. Most other Navajos refused to give their land back, and were then forbidden to make any repairs to their homes, or to build on their land.
The Hopi reasoned that the land wasn't the Navajos' to maintain, and hoped the building freeze would drive them out. But the Navajos remained. Navajos whose homes were unfinished had to live in what was already there, and Navajos whose homes were damaged couldn't repair them. Many ended up living in houses with broken doors, broken windows, and holes in their roofs, which rain and snow could blow into. The building freeze went on for over a quarter century, but now the Navajos have finally been granted permission to repair their homes and build on their property, and the two tribes are working hard at getting along. Each tribe has been wronged, and finding a compromise hasn't been easy.
This book does a wonderful job of examing this issue, and if the book has any faults at all, it's that the author seems unable to hide that she has a slight(?) preference for the Navajos' side over the Hopis'. Overall though, this book is great. Scholarly, but nor boring. Factual, but always interesting. It's full of very real people, very real problems, and very good writing.
A Moving and Informative Book.......2000-04-07
I bought this book while I was driving through Northern Arizona and headed into the area described by the dispute. This book is a moving account of how the anglo practice of drawing borders and lines on the land has affected two ancient peoples. It also aids in showing Native Americans as the heterogeneous group that they really are. We (and I include myself in this group) have a tendency to look at Native Americans as a single group, at least within a single geographical region. The history of Hopi-Navajo interactions is an example of different peoples with different world views who were able to co-exist for generations before the formulation of artificial boundaries. We also see the pressures on traditional practicies by economic imperitives. I strongly reccommend this book for anyone interested in the recent history of Native Americans and the Southwest.

Book Description
This junior/senior textbook presents fundamental concepts of structure property relations and a description of how these concpets apply to every metallic element except iron.
Part One of the book describes general concepts of crystal structure, microstructure and related factors on the mechanical, thermal, magnetic and electronic properties of nonferrous metals, intermetallic compounds and metal matrix composites.
Part Two discusses all the nonferrous metallic elements from two perspectives: First it explains how the concepts presented in Part One define the properties of a particular metallic element and its alloys. Second is a description of the major engineering uses of each metal. This section features sidebar pieces describing particular physical property oddities, engineering applications and case studies. An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department.

This book is a basic reference providing concise, accurate definitions of the key terms and concepts of organic chemistry. Not simply a listing of organic compounds, structures, and nomenclatures, the book is organized into topical chapters in which related terms and concepts appear in close proximity to one another, giving context to the information and helping to make fine distinctions more understandable. Areas covered include: bonding, symmetry, stereochemistry, types of organic compounds, reactions, mechansims, spectroscopy, and photochemistry.

Excellent Metallurgical Reference in Non-Ferrous Metals.......2006-01-19
I think this book is unique in its content-no other book has such a comprehensive coverage in the metallurgy of non-ferrous metals. It is well written and has a pickupable easy to read style. Finding information on specific non-ferrous metals is very easy. The figures are also very clear.
An interesting read.......2006-01-19
I really like this book. The information, obviously, is very good, but the selling point is the writing style. This book is written in an easy-to-read style that makes the information even more interesting. The text includes sidebars on various points of interest that are related to the material and come from the author's own backgrounds. Overall, I really like this book and would recommend it for a classroom application or for anybody who is interested in nonferrous metallurgy and just wants to read. Highly enjoyable.
good reference for metallurgists.......2005-07-11
This book appears to be written to serve as a textbook, but its greatest value may be to practicing metallurgical engineers. It's the first book I've seen that gives in-depth narratives on all the nonferrous metals. Throw a dart at the periodic table, and whatever metal your dart hits, this book has a detailed description of its properties, alloys, & commercial uses. Most metallurgy references short change metals like vanadium, rhenium, or cesium (even the ASM Metals Handbook), but this book gives substantial coverage to every metallic element. 'Well illustrated.

Detail galore.......2007-02-22
This book was well researched and provides exacting detail to support all the conclusions. It is a good reference for scholarly studies and articles, as much of the research came from the author's PhD studies. However, it is a slow read, a common malaise of many detail intensive books. Nevertheless, if knowledge of the actual accomplishments and the historic challenges of agrarian reform are needed, this book is very helpful.
Peasant Radicalization and Social Change in Bicol.......2000-10-22
This short work describes the implementation and effects of the National Democratic Front (NDF) agrarian reform program in a village in Bicol, the Philippines. It begins with a description of rural society and the history of attempts at land reform throughout the Philippines. It then describes the NDF reform programme in general and goes on to discuss its implementation in the community in detail. Garcia Padilla is clearly an NDF partisan, is unclear about his sources, and has a slightly faulty grasp of English - Agrarian Revolution is not a great scholarly work. Given the limited amount of information available about areas under New Peoples' Army control, however, it will be of interest to anyone concerned with land reform in the Philippines.

Book Description
"A history of discovery as revealing as the ways of science." The New York Times "Offers the purest intellectual excitement, the pursuit of knowledge for knowledge's sake...." Wall Street Journal "Beautifully illustrated, superbly written, and thoroughly documented." San Francisco Examiner This book presents a history of the idea of continental drift, which revolutionized our understanding of geology. Sullivan presents the idea from its tentative beginnings in the 19th century to the accumulation of overwhelming evidence in the 1960s. The second edition is extensively updated to reflect our current understanding of the basic geophysics underlying continental drift as well as more recent corroborating evidence. The book is written at a slightly more technical level than the average New York Times science news story. Walter Sullivan, as Science Editor of the New York Times, witnessed many of the scientific discoveries described here, having, for example, accompanied four research expeditions to Antarctica.

Product Description
Many observers have argued that California's system of local government is too complex and fragmented. They contend that such complexity hinders coordination among governmental activities, makes it difficult to establish political accountability, and may lead to inefficient provision of services. Some have further argued that the passage of Proposition 13 in 1978 exacerbated the problem, leading to a proliferation of new cities and special districts and fundamentally altering California's local governance structure. This report examines the long-term trends in California's local government structure and the possible effects of Proposition 13. It presents a new, more accurate method for measuring local government fragmentation and illuminates the factors that contribute to differences in local political structure around the state.
Book Description
This book, a classic in its field, deals with the physical systems and physiological processes that intervene in music. It analyzes what objective, physical properties of sound are associated with what subjective psychological sensations of music, and it describes how these sound patterns are actually generated in musical instruments, how they propagate through the environment, and how they are detected by the ear and interpreted in the brain. Using the precise language of science, but without complicated mathematics, the author weaves a close mesh of the physics, psychophysics and physiology relevant to music. A prior knowledge of physics, mathematics, physiology or psychology is not required to understand most of the book; it is, however, assumed that the reader is familiar with music - in particular, with musical notation, musical scales and intervals, and some of the basics of musical instruments. This new edition has been substantially revised and brought up to date throughout.
Customer Reviews:
This Book Is Waste.......2002-06-26
For the information contained in this book, it was one of the most awkward and long-winded reads i ever experienced. I simply do not agree with the many "kind" reviews readers have given this book. I suppose if you are into the "Harry Potter" stuff, this book may appeal to you- but if you want hard-core knowledge about sound and music, save your money. This text is basically the "glorified" lecture notes of a teachers-assistant (which the book admits), padded with ranting and commentary to "blow up" what would take no more than 20 pages to explain, into a 200+ page "yellow brick road to OZ". And it is not like the book contains "invaluable" knowledge. You can get this knowledge anywhere. With the extremely poor analysis of studies and research which the author is "suppose" to "distill" and convey to the reader, who needs this book!?! You learn nothing! With explanations so typical of a teacher's assistant author- round-about, inconcise, cute- I ended up re-reading passages several times, and afterwards, still saying to myself "what is this dude trying to say?". I already knew a lot of the information coming into this book- i bought it to fill "gaps" in my knowledge (or so i thought). I find this author is weak in the knowledge, weak in the explaining, and i am at a total loss figuring out how this author and this book has made it through three editions. I STRONGLY DO NOT RECOMMEND this book if you are trying to learn the physics of sound and music for the first time, or even the N-th time. If you buy this book, you are going to "rack your brains"!
THE best musical acoustics reference by far.......2001-04-20
I only know the first edition of Juan Roederer's The PHYSICS AND PSYCHOPHYSICS OF MUSIC (almost hot off the presses when used as a textbook for my Spring 1980 Acoustics class for music majors), which I keep close at hand and refer to often (I'm strongly tempted to update though). This first edition at least is much superior to any other musical acoustics book I've encountered, and I've encountered a fair number of them.
It isn't perfect: There is some cultural bias in its explanation of tonality, and its explanation of just tuning is ahistorical and to this extent faulty.
And there are other worthy books: There is Helmholtz's ON THE SENSATIONS OF TONE, and there is the engaging introductory gloss, SCIENCE AND MUSIC by Sir James Jeans.
Excellent introduction to the physics of music........2000-06-26
This is an excellent introductory book about the physics and psychophysics of music. It may be useful for general interested people as well as specialists, since it was written with little mathematics but deep concepts and explanations. In the first chapters the author explains the basic of the physics of music, and then he focus on the biological aspect of hearing and perception of sounds and musical sensations. The book has also three appendices for more advanced people with harder math. Very good figures and an easy-to-read prose complete the landscape of this outstanding book by this argentinian well-known physicist working in the US now.
exciting, comprehensive, broad fund of knowledge.......1998-05-21
excellent review of the subject; can serve as an introductory text in a course, or for self-guided reading; an entry point into an exciting new area in science and the arts; combines and broaches what have traditionally been thought of as very diverse fields; strongly recommend to the amateur as well as to the specialist

Book Description
Published two weeks after his seventieth birthday,
Ada, or Ardor is one of Nabokov's greatest masterpieces, the glorious culmination of his career as a novelist. It tells a love story troubled by incest. But more: it is also at once a fairy tale, epic, philosophical treatise on the nature of time, parody of the history of the novel, and erotic catalogue.
Ada, or Ardor is no less than the supreme work of an imagination at white heat.
This is the first American edition to include the extensive and ingeniously sardonic appendix by the author, written under the anagrammatic pseudonym Vivian Darkbloom.
Customer Reviews:
Ada, our ardors and arbors.......2007-05-24
"Ada, or Ardor: A Family Chronicle", Nabokov's longest novel, is also, indisputably, his most involute. Without having read his entire oeuvre (nearly half-way through!) I can still assert this with confidence - and I'm sure most Nabokov fans would concur. Those who have read "Lolita" or "Pale Fire" will already be aware of the density of his writing, his penchant for allusions, puns, his rouguish tendency to deceive the reader. Some readers object to this; they like their prose "simple and sincere", easy to digest, as straightforward as possible. I would advise such readers to stay far, far away from this book.
I must concede, my first attempt wasn't a success. I got about half-way through before slamming it down in a frenzied rage (as I am wont to do). It was exhausting. "Nabokov has gone too far," I remember saying. But a few weeks later I had the strange urge to return to it, as if summoned by the characters. I'm glad I did - I'm glad they did.
Even for the Nabokov aficionado, accustomed to the density, "Ada..." proves startlingly abstruse. The first fifty pages in particular - in which he focuses on the genealogy of the family (the prefatory family tree is indispensible) and the Terra/Antiterra business - are apt to bewilder and discourage the ardent reader. It does then become less challenging, as the protagonist and "writer" of the book, Van Veen, travels to Ardis, the magnificent New England manor, where he meets and falls in love with his cousin (whom we discover, in the first chapter, is actually his sister). Their life-long love affair is persistently condemned and thwarted. But keep in mind that Nabokov himself isn't interested in condemning or advocating incest. As he said in an interview: "Actually I don't give a damn for incest one way or another. I merely like the 'bl' sound in siblings, bloom, blue, bliss, sable."
But the book is more than a 600-page cornucopia of enticing allusions and puns. It is an astonishing paean to memory, love and imagination. The prominent criticism of Nabokov's work is that he is so over-concerned with stylistics that his novels lack depth or poignancy (ugly word, but apt!). This accusation is not wholly unjust - at times he goes overboard; maybe he'd even admit that himself - but when he's at his best, Nabokov is unparalleled (well, nearly), both in emotional and aesthetic literary perfection.
I couldn't say that "Ada..." was Nabokov's greatest achievement - "Lolita" remains for me his total masterpiece - but this may well change upon rereading the book, which I most certainly will do.
Rich Characters.......2007-05-14
Lots going on here: great descriptions, complicated characters, interesting combinattion between historic and fictional period.
"by turns ecstatic and esoteric...".......2007-02-15
I haven't read Lolita, and am now somewhat mystified by my decision to begin reading Nabokov with Ada, his longest and arguably most complex work. The narrative is extraordinarily rich, not so much a generational saga (as the subtitle, "A Family Chronicle" suggests) but the measured, persistently vivacious pulse of a lifelong love affair between the novel's principal characters and narrators, Van and Ada.
Ada and Van are remarkable in their unfolding complexity, their abundances and deficiencies, their engaging humanness. Their lives are saturated with the sensual joys of sex and nature, a fullness that also includes the pleasures of language and literature. For me this is one of the most rewarding aspects of the novel, the warm embrace of the body and the mind in a celebratory vision of the world. And because the book is a memoir narrated by Van, with additions by Ada, the novel also functions as an exploration of memory, time, meaning and signifigance.
The prose is by turns ecstatic and esoteric, rapturously lucid and inscrutably convoluted. This is due, in part, to the novel and it's characters being tri-lingual, with substantial portions of dialogue written in a tumbling mixture of English, French and Russian. But the text itself is effusive and complicated, riddled with continuous verbal and thematic puns, allusions to Russian literature, ironical references and other demonstrations of cleverness, only a few of which are selectively explained (or further complicated) by 16 pages of accompanying endnotes.
Because the book is narrated by Van --"vain Van Veen"-- a certain amount of such embelishment and playful pretension is natural, even amusing. Nabokov seems to be extending his celebration of fullness through the size and complexity of the book itself. However, this tri-lingual density holds readers at a certain distance, and begins to feel more like the indulgences of a self-congratulating wordsmith than the craft of a gifted and sensitive writer. For this reader, it made for a somewhat long slog...
(3.5 stars)

Life is somewhere else .......2006-07-11
"Lolita" is Vladmir Nabokov's most famous book - but those who are able to read his "Ada or Ardor" that may not be his best. It is actually hard to pick one of them. Both novels are superbly written and unforgettable for different reasons. It seems to most readers that "Lolita" is easier to read, the plot is easier to follow and so is time and place. "Ada or Ardor" requires more attention, more ability to untie our bounds to reality and exploit an unknown world, as if life is not here, but in another place.
This place has a name, it is called Antiterra, and this is where narrative is set. `Where it is' is not the proper question - but reader should wonder what it is. And it requires quite a complex answer, that may take the whole book. Therefore, one should stop wondering and dive beneath the surface of the narrative, and get acquired with its characters. "Ada or Ardor" starts with an interesting quotation that could be from Tolstoy's "Anna Kariênina", but it is not. From the on, the narrator - and the reader, as consequence - starts to investigates the effects of memory and passion in the life of the characters - mostly Van, the main one, who falls in love with Ada, his cousin.
With "Ada or Ardor", Nabokov is dealing with the terrain where Proust is the king: memory. But in his version of a character trying to regain the lost time, Nabokov is also a master of language, narrative and effect. This novel is one of the most complex that readers can find in English - or any language, for that matter. There is a plot to follow, but it is the least important qualities when it comes to this narrative. The writer is more concerned with bringing his characters memories to life. And so he does with charm, intelligence and beauty.
Nabokov relation to the language is very peculiar. He has the ability to transform poetry into prose without making it read like pretentious. As a matter of fact, his superb language becomes vital to the narrative that unfolds slowly, on its own speed. This is when readers have to forget what they've experience with another books and let Nabokov's narrator conduce them to an unknown world, where earthy moral, judgments, feelings and relationships are not the law.
"Ada or Ardor" is more than a book, it is a complex and unforgettable reading experience. Its themes may cause strangeness, and the way Naobokov deals with them may disturb readers and leave others open-mouthed - but never indifferent. Since we are living an age where it is rare to book cause any commotion, "Ada or Ardor" stands as a unique piece that can cause the strongest feelings in its readers.
