    Book Description

Light and time are key environmental components for the majority of organisms. Biologically, time operates at various scales, ranging from the annual cycle of seasons, to the daily cycle of the sun, to the potentially rapid cycle of cell division. What is apparently fundamental to all organisms is the ability to respond in a manner predictive of time. Time-dependent changes in physiology, morphology, and ecology are responsive to various environmental cues, the most significant of which is light. The ability of organisms to perceive, harvest, and protect themselves from light is also of fundamental importance, leading to a variety of biological responses including phototaxis and photosynthesis. This volume, which concentrates primarily but not exclusively on both prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms, provides a series of chapters that explore various aspects of the underlying biology of organisms' reactions to light and time. The volume provides a wide-ranging and up-to-date review of this fundamental area of biology, which is currently advancing at a rapid pace.

        Book Description

Supramolecular compounds are multi-molecular assemblies possessing a great deal of structural, three-dimensional information. This is the first work to deal specifically with crystallographic studies combined with other methodologies, such as molecular dynamics, thermodynamics, NMR and atomic force microscopy.
A wide range of supramolecular systems - ranging from atoms to single 5 kDa molecules to high polymers - involve molecular recognition based on non-covalent interactions having a precise geometry. The work focuses on general structural concepts as the basis for the chemical synthesis of preconceived compounds and devices, such as switches, sensors and biomimetic systems. Further progress will come from the imprinting of structural information into molecular components that spontaneously proceed to self-organization.
The contributions of crystallographers, chemists, photochemists and physicists enhances the typical sequence: conception and design - synthesis - structure and visualization - properties - applications, taking the reader from first principles to the very forefront of the latest achievements.

No other book on the market today can match the success of Halliday, Resnick and Walker's Fundamentals of Physics! In a breezy, easy-to-understand style the book offers a solid understanding of fundamental physics concepts, and helps readers apply this conceptual understanding to quantitative problem solving.

              3 out of 5 stars NOT a beginner's book.......2005-10-04

The first physics course I've ever taken used this very textbook. If you are about to be in the same boat as I was, let me tell you this: this is NOT a good introductory physics text. If you're not one of the kids who took AP Physics in high school, you will probably struggle with this book unless you have a very amazing professor.

Most of the formulas are given as "this is the general formula, and here's how we derive the other formulas from this". There's very little explanation involved with concepts, and when the author tries they are extremely hazy. This book apparently assumes that you've learned every concept before, and that you only need a brief overview and a table of formulas.

Not to completely bash this book - far from it. Formulas are listed in an organized and comprehensive fashion, and useful derivations are given also. If I need to look up a physics formula, this is the book I use as it's actually faster than sifting through Google. Beware, though, if this is your first endeavour into the world of physics.

              2 out of 5 stars What a Struggle.......2005-03-20

I'm using this book for a distance learning course in physics. I suspect it was not written for distance learning. I often find it hard to relate the answers to chapter problems to the explanations in the text. I also have a copy of Cutnell & Johnson's Physics 6th edition. The thinking in the latter is a lot easier to follow.

3 out of 5 stars pretty good, beginners may need extra help with it.......2004-08-20

i'm using this book as a main source for preparing for the physics GRE exam, and i'm finding that it is getting me up to speed for the exam. my previous academic background is actually math/german/finance, but i can tell you that the math background is what makes working with this book fairly successful. i'm pretty much a sucker for big, pretty books anyway, but i really can tell that this one is definitely helping me learn basic physics- fairly good examples, lots of problems, and interesting introductions to each chapter to captivate your attention and motivate you to continue studying. if you're a freshman taking using this book for a course, i would suggest you consult your professor regularly and get help whenever something is not quite clear- it's probably a royal pain in the neck to take physics I/II and calc concurrently, so i can totally understand those of you without the complete math background having trouble with this material- i know i did 20 years ago as an undergrad, and it made me really dislike physics at that time. i don't know what calc classes are like these days, but i would strongly recommend at least 3 semesters of calculus before embarking on a course that uses this book- it'll make your learning experience much more intense, and you'll get a lot more from the book and will be able to appreciate it much more. Oh, and you may just want to try and order the international edition from abroad (Europe, for example)- it's about $100 less than the U.S. price and still has the same content!

              2 out of 5 stars Highly overrated.......2004-07-04

Alright, so of course this is the book required by just about every college in the country these days in their introductory physics courses---well, it shouldn't be. The authors certainly provide mathematical motivation for the concepts they cover, but certainly don't give adequate real-world motivation for concepts. Oh yeah, so, as one idiot reviewer who thinks he's some kind of precocious student said, this book helped him and his high school buddies get fives on the AP Test---WELL BIG DEAL IDIOT!!! GOOD FOR YOU!! I only managed to do that in my freshman year of highschool so I guess it must be really hard or something--*cough* Well, in the real world of people who actually know anything about physics or math or any field, getting a five on the AP exam in highschool isn't anything special. Basically, this book will prepare you to pass exams and standardized tests--it won't give you understanding. For that, go somewhere worthwhile---for example, the Feynman Lectures on Physics, all three volumes of which cost about half as much as Halliday and Resnick's book.

              1 out of 5 stars is this a money-making gimmick or what?.......2004-05-07

Our physics department decided to switch to this book last year, and I have been trying to figure out which edition to buy.. "extended enhanced problem edition", "extended", "enhanced"? How about throwing in a student's companion text that contains "chapter extensions?"? What about getting the right Solutions manual? only 30% of the solutions are in it? And now I just found out they have published (another?) new 7th edition which no doubt will have a brand new array of essential supplements and extensions. Why all these editions and supplements?

Two gentlemen seek Clara Desmond's hand, and each has a claim to Castle Richmond. Another story of love and law from Trollope, this time set in Ireland during the famine of the 1840's.

Among the different houses in the country at which he had become intimate was that of the Countess of Desmond. The Countess of Desmond did not receive much company at Desmond Court. She had not the means, nor perhaps the will, to fill the huge old house with parties of her Irish neighbours--for she herself was English to the backbone. Ladies of course made morning calls, and gentlemen too, occasionally; but society at Desmond Court was for some years pretty much confined to this cold formal mode of visiting. Owen Fitzgerald, however, did obtain admittance into the precincts of the Desmond barracks.

I have spent the last 30 years collecting Trollope and trying to find his less popular works. He is my favourite author from his time, and that includes Dickens who, for all his virtues, I find maudling. This book is one of those one cannot put down, well plotted although it has all the usual Trollope landmarks - so the question is, how is it one can continue reading book after book of this author, never get tired and always be surprised?

CASTLE RICHMOND is Trollope's tale of Ireland, set during the famine. Two Fitzgerald cousins vie for the love of Lady Clara Desmond, the penniless beauty. One has money and title but all that is threatened by a secret.. A finely crafted novel and a gripping read.

I RATE THIS A 5 STAR BOOK. AS USUAL, TROLLOPE WRITES SO WELL AND HOLDS YOUR ATTENTION FROM BEGINNING TO END.

THIS IS THE TALE OF 2 MEN IN LOVE WITH THE SAME WOMAN. THE FORTUNES OF THESE 2 MEN CONSTANTLY SHIFT THROUGHOUT THE STORY DUE TO A FAMILY INHERITANCE QUESTION - WHICH FORMS THE CENTRAL MYSTERY OF THE BOOK. AND AS THEIR FORTUNES CHANGE, THE MOTHER OF THE WOMAN WHOM BOTH LOVE, CONTINUES TO INTEFERE AND ATTEMPT TO SELL HER DAUGHTER'S HEART TO THE RICHEST BIDDER.

I'VE READ A LOT OF TROLLOPE, AND I WOULD RATE THIS ONE OF HIS FINEST. THE ONLY PART OF THE BOOK THAT I FOUND NOT THAT INTERESTING, WAS THE HISTORY PERTAINING TO THE GREAT IRISH FAMINE.NEVERTHELESS, IF YOU LIKE TROLLOPE, DO READ THIS ONE!

                          5 out of 5 stars Trollope's Romance in Ireland.......2000-09-07

I would like to start this review by emphatically agreeing with the other reviewers of Trollope's fiction who say that this is an author that should be immediately re-discovered. Here is a man who created characters that we could not forget if we wanted. We see all sides of his creations, the good and the bad, and there are times when you might even feel empathy for the villians. How many authors can accomplish that?

Castle Richmond is Trollope's romance in Ireland set against the backdrop of the Great Famine. You might wonder if the famine sequences get in the way of the main plot. I certainly thought so myself until I read a brilliantly written chapter two-thirds of the way through the book in which one of the heroes of the story encounters a starving mother and her children. In five paragraphs the book takes on a whole new prespective. Suddenly our hero (and ourselves) become aware that happiness is a relative thing, not something that should be dictated by those we love and how much are in our purses. What an enlightening concept! Anyone who thinks that Trollope is out-dated need only focus on what he is saying in Castle Richmond to see what a truly modern thinker he really was.

Castle Richmond's main plot is a look at two upper class families: the Desmonds and the Fitzgeralds. We follow them through their lives, watching as love is gained and love is lost. We get a complete glimpse into the morals of these people; people who really feel they are doing right no matter who is hurt. I was amazed that the melancholy scenes were almost better written then the happy ones. And there are very few writers of that age and ours that write better dialogue than he.

I hope readers who have read Trollope's more popular works will take the time to read this novel. Trollope obviously loved Ireland immensely, and he need not apologize for setting his story in that country. The land, the people, the circumstances are completely displayed for us to enjoy. It is a comfort to walk in his world, through the path between the elms, through the hilly countryside. I thought more then once that I would go there like a shot if it was offered to me. And that, I believe, is the true magic of Trollope's work.
