      Book Description

Membrane Transport is targeted towards researchers with an interest in the mechanism of solute transport across biological membranes. Its scope is broad, ranging from the techniques required to study transport itself, through the expression, purification and reconstitution of transporters, to techniques for investigation of their structures. As such, it not only proves the necessary technical grounding for newcomers to the field, but should also be of value to "old-hands" wishing to get up to date with recent developments in these areas. While some of the approaches described require sophisticated equipment (e.g. a stopped-flow fluorimeter), most of the protocols can be implemented in any well- found laboratory. Preparation of this volume comes at a time when a result of genome sequencing our knowledge of membrane transporter sequences is far outstripping our understanding of their molecular mechanisms. Our hope is that this book will help future researchers to redress this imbalance.

        Book Description

This book describes half a century of progress in two mainstream areas of biological research: membrane transport, initially a focus of physiologists, and oxidative phosphorylation, initially a focus of biochemists. Robinson shows how the development of new explanatory models had unexpectedly merged these inquiries into a new field, bioenergetics. In the late 1930s, explanations for the asymmetric distribution of ions between cells and their environments invoked absolute impermeabilities of the cell's surrounding membranes. But new experiments contradicted that idea and demonstrated that forming the transmembrane distributions required metabolic energy, implying the participation of active transport "pumps." Subsequent studies identified, isolated, and characterized these pumps as enzymes coupling ionic transport to the consumption of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), an "energy-rich" molecule serving as a cellular energy store. In the late 1930s oxidative phosphylation, the process of coupling ATP synthesis to oxidative metabolism, was identified. The explanatory model emerging in the next decades, however, did not follow the enzymatic precedents of known metabolic phosphorylations but rather embodied the principle that metabolic oxidations drive active transport pumps to create transmembrane distribution of ions, with these ionic asymmetries then driving ATP synthesis. It was discovered that ATP consumption can form ionic asymmetries; ionic asymmetries can drive ATP formation; and ionic asymmetries-like ATP-can also power other cellular functions.

          Book Description

This book deals with the molecular mechanisms of membrane trafficking, a central eukaryotic cell biological process. In the post-genomic era many essential molecules involved in intracellular membrane/protein transport are emerging. A huge task now is to compile the molecular networks that govern these processes. Understanding of regulatory processes and participating molecules are likely to reveal global cellular regulatory circuits that couple membrane trafficking with other cellular functions. Such cell biological features are only starting to emerge. This book puts special emphasis on such mechanisms and processes. The contents discusses the role of coat proteins, tethering complexes, small rab GTPases, Sec1-family proteins and SNARE molecule phosphorylation in exocytosis, endocytosis and membrane fusion. In addition, the role of lipids in vesicle formation and membrane fusion, and some specialized cell biological denovo membrane generation processes are discussed.

            Book Description

This volume details the transport of molecules, large and small, across the membranes of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbial cells. An international group of contributors unify a diverse range of phenomena with the discussion of the signal peptides that target proteins to particular destinations, and the role of chaperonins. Topics covered include secretion of proteins out of the bacterial cell by Type I, II, and III mechanisms, including the newly recognized bacterial signal recognition pathway in Type II; passage across internal membranes of eukaryotic proteins, whether destined for secretion or en route to internal organelles such as chloroplasts and peroxisomes; how bacteria obtain energy required for solute uptake; the role of phosphorylation and evolutionary relationships of the proteins involved; and efflux pumps for toxic substances in bacterial, animal, and plant cells.

                        Book Description

Superstrings and M-theory: provocative and controversial, but unarguably one of the most interesting and active areas of research in current physics. Called by some, "the theory of everything," superstrings may solve a problem that has eluded physicists for the past 50 years, the final unification of the two great theories of the twentieth century, general relativity and quantum field theory. Now, here is a thoroughly revised, second edition of a course-tested comprehensive introductory graduate text on superstrings which stresses the most current areas of interest, not covered in other presentations, including: · Four-dimensional superstrings · Kac-Moody algebras · Teichmüller spaces and Calabi-Yau manifolds · M-theory Membranes and D-branes · Duality and BPS relations · Matrix models The book begins with a simple discussion of point particle theory, and uses Feynman path integrals to unify the presentation of superstrings. It has been updated throughout, and three new chapters on M-theory have been added. Prerequisites are an acquaintance with quantum mechanics and relativity.

                        4 out of 5 stars a "schaum's outline" of string theory.......2004-02-21

well, it doesn't exactly have those solved examples as in Schaum's Outline books, but the analogy is close enough for the notes. That means this is a terrible book to learn the subject from if you just barely know quantum field theory, but if you've already been exposed to quite a bit of current research topics, even superficially, here is a very neat set of notes/summaries of some core elements. Recommended for intermediate graduate students as a quick reference.

Superstring theory has come a long way since its beginnings in the theory of the strong interaction. The mathematical preparation needed back then was no where near as formidable as it is today, but the experimental motivation then greatly exceeded what is available today in superstrings. Students have to face a mountain of mathematics in order to enter research into superstring theory, and most of this is not explained satisfactorily in the mathematics textbooks and monographs. Therefore, students need to embed themselves in the "oral tradition" of mathematics in order to understand it and gain the insight needed to make original contributions to string theory. This book is somewhat helpful in explaining the mathematics behind string and M-theories, and so the places in which it is will be highlighted in this review.

One of the places which it does this is in chapter 5 on multiloops and Teichmuller spaces. The author discusses the Schottky groups, the constant curvature metric formalism, theta functions, and the light cone formalism, the latter of which is dealt with in the context of string field theories in later chapters. The author points out the Schottky problem as one that has been solved and its connection to the parametrizing moduli space by the period matrix for the calculation of loop amplitudes beyond three loops. He does a good job of explaining how to calculate the multiloop amplitude using these different formalisms, particularly the origin of the "period matrix". An explicit formula is given for the multiloop amplitude in terms of the Schottky groups using the Nambu-Goto formalism. The functional integral does not fix uniquely the region of integration in this formalism, and so this region must be carefully truncated to avoid overcounting. This motivates the author to introduce the Polyakov formalism, which, interestingly, makes heavy use of the research of the 19th century on Riemann surfaces. Thus, string theory should not be thought of as a purely 21st century theory that found its way into the 20th, as some have described it. Much of the mathematics it uses comes from the latter half of the 19th century. The author shows how the singularity structure of the multiloop diagram can be expressed in terms of a Selberg zeta function. The redundancy in the path measure under conformal transformations is removed by gauge fixing, Weyl rescalings, and reparametrizations. All of this leads to the moduli space of constant curvature metrics so as to alleviate the problem of overcounting from reparametrization invariance. The moduli space, as usual, is written as Teichmuller space modulo the mapping class group, and the author shows how to relate the variation of the metric tensor to the quadratic differentials. All of these considerations are then generalized to superstrings, with the author showing how the presence of spinors complicates things to a certain extent. The author does mention the supermoduli space in connection with Grassmannians, but unfortunately refers the reader to the literature for further details. He justifies his avoidance of the Grassmannian approach by purusing a field theory of strings. The latter however is just as complicated, although for different reasons.

Another helpful discussion in the book is the one on Kac-Moody algebras and E8. The author motivates well the need for Kac-Moody algebras, namely that of making sense of the complicated spectrum of the heterotic string. The Kac-Moody algebras are first developed in the book in the context of conformal field theory wherein the author introduces the famous vertex operators. In the case of heterotic strings, the author uses the vertex operators to construct a representation of a Kac-Moody algebra that utilizes the Chevalley basis.

The discussion on F-theory, although very short, is also very interesting and helpful considering that most of the mathematical literature on this subject might be too difficult for newcomers to the subject. The author motivates well the need for F-theory, being that of a theory with twelve-dimensional symmetry that is compactified on the torus. F-theories are thus a Type IIB theory with SL(2,Z) modular symmetry. Elliptic fibrations, of much recent interest in the mathematics community, are shown to originate in the (non-perturbative) compactification of a Type IIB theory on a manifold B, via F-theory compactified on an elliptic fibration of the manifold B.

This is a well written book, but I think it lacks the depth necessary to actually learn string theory from it. I do recommend getting it, but get it along with Polchinski's book and use it as a supplement, something to read to reinforce the main ideas.

I enjoyed this book because it simply portrays how the univeral workings of the universe function. It makes you think just how many forms string can take and in this case, it's one large piece of string. Perhaps, we can use these pieces of string as a source of fuel to help us survive so that more theories of strings can be created.

With an Introduction and Notes by Roger Clark, University of Kent at Canterbury One of the great Classics of Western Literature, Les Miserables is a magisterial work which is rich in both character portrayal and meticulous historical description. Characters such as the absurdly criminalised Valjean, the street urchin Gavroche, the rascal Thenardier, the implacable detective Javert, and the pitiful figure of the prostitute Fantine and her daughter Cosette, have entered the pantheon of literary dramatis personae.

Since geniuses, like demons, recognize the presence of a superior God by certain signs, Thenardier comprehended that he had to deal with a very strong person. It was like an intuition; he comprehended it with his clear and sagacious promptitude.

If you ever thought Hey, it must be easy to be an actor, just pay attention to Michael York, who's using only his voice! He keeps separate several characters, male and female, with nuances and accents that we can understand instantly.
Pity about this abridgement is that the translation was never edited. There is no distinction between that and which, for instance. "Which" is used exclusively.

                                    5 out of 5 stars "Les Miserables" : Victor Hugo's grestest achievement.......2001-09-16

If you are the kind of person thirsting for the image of Man as a being to whom nothing is impossible - and to whom everything great is possible, then "Les Miserables" is the novel for you.
With a few exceptions, such as Ayn Rand, there is no writer in world literature who has portrayed such a grand, noble, sublime and inspiring image of man as Victor Hugo.
In "Les Miserables", Hugo has given the best expression that his genius could to this element.

The theme of this masterpiece is : "The projection and glorification of a moral-spiritual force based on Love, Compassion and above all Conscience, aimed at overthrowing the existing order of human existence and establish a new world where these cardinal values will guide human life."

Such an important, profound and philosophical theme could only have been selected by a visionary such as Victor Hugo - whom I consider the greatest novelist of the 19th Century.

Other than Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" I do not know any single novel in world literature which seeks to present a unique philosophy to change the world and give a new direction to human existence.

According to me, the plot-theme is : "The step-by-step purification of a man's soul and his achievement of spiritual perfection."

Jean Valjean is the hero of the novel. The best years of his life have been wasted because of the iniquities and injustice of the prevailing social order. Emerging from prison after 19 years, his soul is immersed in anger, bitterness, hatred and a feeling of vengeance against society. How he acieves spiritual perfection, as viewed by Hugo, is what the story is all about.

However, this point has not been recognised by many. While most say that the theme is : "The injustice of society towards the lower classes", Hugo's intention was to dramatise "Man's struggle against the laws of society".

Keeping this in view, the accepted plot theme is (as best defined by Ayn Rand) : "The lifelong flight of an ex-convict from a ruthless representative of the law", this representative being Javert.

However, the struggle of Jean Valjean continues long after his conflict with Javert is resolved.
Victor Hugo is not just showing that Conscience is above Law, but this: what is the highest level of selflessness and self-sacrifice a man is capable of and what makes it possible.
As far as I can see, the accepted plot-theme has been identified the way it has been, because it defines a specific purpose(i.e., Javert's pursuit of Jean Valjean). Perhaps critcs would dismiss my point of view because neither is it Jean Valjean's explicit goal to become perfect nor does he set himself an objective which would symbolize his attainment of perfection.
But I look at the plot to have been construsted in a manner which inevitably leads Jean Valjean to perfection.

Bishop Myriel is the guiding image for Jean Valjean:his role represents how love and compassion can resurrect a man's conscience.

Fantine is the symbol of the woman and Cossette is the symbol of the child who are the victims of social evils.

Javert-the implaccable, ruthless and awe-inspiring policeman who shall never compromise on his values - is the symbol of blind conformity to the existing legal and social order.

One of the greatest achievements of "Les Miserables" is its sweeping sense of drama. What I love most about Hugo is the superb dramatic situations - suspenseful, thrilling, emotionally intense - he creates.
The scenes are so breathtakingly grandiose and mind-blowing that one can only think : "How did he get such a brilliant idea??!!"
The best part of the novel is the fighting at the barricades during the July Revolution in Paris - led by, perhaps the most admirable hero in 19th Century Romantic fiction - Enjolras.
Enjolras - despite a minor role - made a greater impact on me than the two central characters - Jean Valjean and Marius. One also cannot forget the lovable, heroic, 12 year old Gavroche.

The greatest drawback of "Les Miserables" is the plethore of esssays on various social, historical, religious and other issues, which are exasperatingly long, which interrupt the plot, make the novel cumbersome and the reader impatient.
However, they give the reader a picture of the world which Hugo had in mind (and which he wanted to revolutionize-and how) while writing the book.
They may not be directly related to the plot, but are certainly related to the meaning of the novel.

Further, the plot tends to become loose at times. The coincidences are rather naive and force the reader to conclude that they are meant solely to bring coherence in the story or to present a particular aspect of Hugo's philosophy.
Some may find the descriptions unnecessarily meticulous, though in poetic terms they are stunningly beautiful.

However, all this seems irrelevant if we concentrate on the profound pschycological analysis of the value-conflicts of Jean Valjean (and Javert) rarely matched in world literature; the scope and intellectual value of the novel; its immense social and philosophical significance and its wonderful portrayal of man as a heroic being.

But above all is the unsurpassable dramatic treatment rendered by Hugo's genius : the sheer artistry, the incomparable ingenuity, the soulful emotional content, the startling originality and compelling suspense-there is NO OTHER SINGLE WRITER IN THE WORLD who has equalled Hugo in this aspect-make, in addition to its numerous merits, "Les Miserables" one of the greatest achievements of the human mind.

5 out of 5 stars Reading as Epic Journey.......1999-08-04

You look at this book cautiouly, circling it warily. 1,260 pags?!! (Do not even consider an abridgement, for that is wicked) To read this massive work, you must be brave and determined. It is not easy or light, and, although it is far and away my favorite book, there were many times when I would lay it aside and blink with that slow, "God give me strength" air. Yet what epic journey worth its scratch is fluffy, over-in-a-day fun? Jean Valjean has hardship, so does the reader. One doesn't so much read as inhabit Les Miserables. I lived with this book for an entire semester, and had been dipping my toes into itt for over a year. When I finally read the last pages, there were tears streaking my face. That is a rare compliment to Hugo. My tears were not only for the sad fate of the convict-saint, but for th completion of such a long journey. I never rea Les Miserables to finish it. Perhaps this is merely an indication of insanity, perhaps an accurate reflection of the mind set necessary to read and enjoy Hugo. Get lost in his page-long sentences and revel in the vrebiosity! Be brave, and don't give up.

5 out of 5 stars Long but worth the read.......1999-01-06

I have had the CD of the Original London Cast Musical of Les Miserable for about 10 years and have been a huge fan but nothing could prepare me for the book which although a long and hard read, is the most amazing book I have ever read. Everyone has something to learn from it and if you are looking for a reason to read it heres a reason: in the words of the great Victor Hugo himself : "As long as ignorance and misery remain on earth, books like this can never be useless."

5 out of 5 stars Eponine: Truly the most fascinating character of the novel!.......1998-01-05

I read Les Mis last year as an assignment for my high school English class and instantly feel in love with the story and characters (I ended up reading the abridged version 3 times).

Upon reading all of the other reviews, I was startled that nobody even mentioned the character of Eponine. She is the epitome of progress and definately the most intriguing, not to mention original, characters of the novel. She was brought up to lie and steal, but yet had room in her hardended heart to love Marius. At the beginning we see her as a bratty, jealous child and yet in the end she was a martyr. I feel Eponine made one of the most remarkable changes of attitude in the novel. Her progress is commendable. May we all have such great revelations.

Truly the most remarkable and moving book I've ever read. A must-read!

I read alot, but this is the first book that I have read that had affected me so much. The characters are memorable and the plot is fantastic. This is a book where you don't have to look very hard in order to find a conncetion to your daily life. Javet, Jean Valjean, Colette, and Marius among others will remain with you for the rest of your life and wherever you go you will surely find someone who will remind you of them. Read this book!

Les miserables is a really good book because even though it has more than one book in it, it still flows from one story to the next and I think that this is a really good book and that this is the biggest and most wonderful masterpiece ever written in the history of the world.

Victor Hugo's Les Miserables is the best book I have read even though I am still reading it. I am in seventh grade but according to my school districts reading system I'm reading a ninth grade book!!! All in all I think that kids who like reading and are 13 years old should buy and read this book!! This is what I think about Les Miserables!!! Nathan F. Ward
