Book Description

Until recently community ecology—a science devoted to understanding the patterns and processes of species distribution and abundance—focused mainly on specific and often limited scales of a single community. Since the 1970s, for example, metapopulation dynamics—studies of interacting groups of populations connected through movement—concentrated on the processes of population turnover, extinction, and establishment of new populations.

Metacommunities takes the hallmarks of metapopulation theory to the next level by considering a group of communities, each of which may contain numerous populations, connected by species interactions within communities and the movement of individuals between communities. In examining communities open to dispersal, the book unites a broad range of ecological theories, presenting some of the first empirical investigations and revealing the value of the metacommunity approach.

The collection of empirical, theoretical, and synthetic chapters in Metacommunities seeks to understand how communities work in fragmented landscapes. Encouraging community ecologists to rethink some of the leading theories of population and community dynamics, Metacommunities urges ecologists to expand the spatiotemporal scales of their research.

    Book Description

No species occurs everywhere. Indeed, the majority are absent from most places, and where they do occur they are usually quite rare. Gaston discusses the structure of these distributions - the structure of the geographic ranges of species.
Gaston is particularly concerned with the factors that determine the limits to a species' geographic range, how the sizes of those ranges vary, and patterns in that variation. Also considered are the distribution of individuals amongst those sites where a species does occur and what determines that
distribution, and some of the practical implications of all these.
Both in a pure and applied context, ecologists need a broader perspective on their subject matter than has historically prevailed. This book provides one such perspective.
A must have book for any researchers and graduate students studying macroecology, biogeography and conservation biology.

      Book Description

Cambridge Studies in Ecology presents balanced, comprehensive, up-to-date, and critical reviews of selected topics within ecology, both botanical and zoological. The Series is aimed at advanced final-year undergraduates, graduate students, researchers, and university teachers, as well as ecologists in industry and government research. It encompasses a wide range of approaches and spatial, temporal, and taxonomic scales in ecology, including quantitative, theoretical, population, community, ecosystem, historical, experimental, behavioural and evolutionary studies. The emphasis throughout is on ecology related to the real world of plants and animals in the field rather than on purely theoretical abstractions and mathematical models. Some books in the Series attempt to challenge existing ecological paradigms and present new concepts, empirical or theoretical models, and testable hypotheses. Others attempt to explore new approaches and presents syntheses on topics of considerable importance ecologically which cut across the conventional but artificial boundaries within the science of ecology.

                  Book Description

This text provides a thoroughly modern graduate-level introduction to the theory of critical behavior. Beginning with a brief review of phase transitions in simple systems and of mean field theory, the text then goes on to introduce the core ideas of the renormalization group. Following chapters cover phase diagrams, fixed points, cross-over behavior, finite-size scaling, perturbative renormalization methods, low-dimensional systems, surface critical behavior, random systems, percolation, polymer statistics, critical dynamics and conformal symmetry. The book closes with an appendix on Gaussian integration, a selected bibliography, and a detailed index. Many problems are included. The emphasis throughout is on providing an elementary and intuitive approach. In particular, the perturbative method introduced leads, among applications, to a simple derivation of the epsilon expansion in which all the actual calculations (at least to lowest order) reduce to simple counting, avoiding the need for Feynman diagrams.

This book deals with a most interesting and dynamical area of modern research in physics.
In the frontmatters, Cardy explains that, too often, in the past, students who were willing to go into research in condensed matter as quickly as possible, found a difficult time struggling and mastering techniques that were initially devised for particule physics.
                  K. Wilson built an arch between these two sub-fields of physics, through his Nobel-prize-worth insights.
However, as Cardy rightly points out, renormalization group methods can be more efficiently explained, learnt and applied by condensed matter, in a Feynman-diagram inspired presentation of the perturbative renormalization group. This subject then reduce to relatively simple combinatorics.
This is one of this book main contribution.
After explaining carefully scaling concepts and the various corresponding laws of critical phenomena, as well as field theory and Landau-Ginzburg theory, Cardy goes on to explain those from renormalization group methods.
The usual (exactly solved) statistical models appear at various parts of the book.
Welcome additions to the literature are chapters on random systems (those with impureties), polymer physics and critical dynamics.
A final chapter offers a primer on how conformal symmetry pops out at the critical point. This is a most active subject of current research in the field.
I should stress however that this book is meant for advanced students.
The typical student would have a background in phase transitions and statistical physics, as well as prior acquaintance with basic (quantum)field theory.
This book would probably be more profitably read with a more experienced student or a teacher at hand, for it is written in a rather condensed form and due to the vastness of the subject can hardly give an overview of it.

The material presented in this invaluable textbook has been tested in two courses. One of these is a graduate-level survey of statistical physics; the other, a rather personal perspective on critical behavior. Thus, this book defines a progression starting at the book-learning part of graduate education and ending in the midst of topics at the research level. To supplement the research-level side the book includes some research papers. Several of these are classics in the field, including a suite of six works on self-organized criticality and complexity, a pair on diffusion-limited aggregation, some papers on correlations near critical points, a few of the basic sources on the development of the real-space renormalization group, and several papers on magnetic behavior in a plain geometry. In addition, the author has included a few of his own papers.

I would never, ever call this book a 'solid basis' for statistical mechanics--that's Landau, or Sommerfeld.

What Kadanoff does do, like other great theorists, is make the field seem real. For instance, Feynman's diagrams don't add anything new to the mathematics, but they set the idea into focus in a way that makes you think differently about the real world. Before Gell-Mann, chromodynamics was just a mathematical idea: reading him makes you think there's really particles. And who really understood polarization until reading Dirac?

Kadanoff does that for critical phenomena. Even when he covers the material in a uselessly glossy way, he sets the theory on its feet and opens up the idea for more work. I've gotten tons of ideas from reading him.

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps to be inproved in subsequent editions.......2001-07-12

This book is a solid basis for a course in statistical mechanics. Since it was a first edition, there were many typographical errors that made some of the reading a little sketchy in parts. IF you have the patientence to sit down and derive some of the more important results that Kadanoff glosses over, you will greatly benefit from the book. It is a solid book, complete in it's presentation of the material. At time his notation can be a bit unorthordox and can take getting used to, especially for those who are more strict in their "mathematical hygene." One very nice features of the book is that the level of the problems lends themselves very well to a course. In other words an instructor won't have to make up his/her own pwoblems for the most part.

                    Book Description

Over the past few years, finite-size scaling has become an increasingly important tool in studies of critical systems. This is partly due to an increased understanding of finite-size effects by analytical means, and partly due to our ability to treat larger systems with large computers. The aim of this volume was to collect those papers which have been important for this progress and which illustrate novel applications of the method. The emphasis has been placed on relatively recent developments, including the use of the &egr;-expansion and of conformal methods.

                        Book Description

This two-volume work provides a comprehensive study of the statistical mechanics of lattice models. It introduces the reader to the main areas in statistical mechanics and the theory of phase transitions. The development is built on a firm mathematical and physical basis. Volume 1 contains an account of mean-field and cluster variation methods successfully used in many applications in solid-state physics and theoretical chemistry as well as an account of exact results for the Ising and six-vertex models and those derivable by transformation methods. Volume 2 includes extensive treatments of scaling theory, algebraic and real-space renormalization group methods and the eight-vertex model. It also includes an account of series methods and a treatment of dimer assemblies.

                              Book Description

"The books line up on my shelf like bright Bodhisattvas ready to take tough questions or keep quiet company. They stake out a vast territory, with works from two millennia in multiple genres: aphorism, lyric, epic, theater, and romance."
—Willis G. Regier, The Chronicle Review

"No effort has been spared to make these little volumes as attractive as possible to readers: the paper is of high quality, the typesetting immaculate. The founders of the series are John and Jennifer Clay, and Sanskritists can only thank them for an initiative intended to make the classics of an ancient Indian language accessible to a modern international audience."
                              —The Times Higher Education Supplement

"The Clay Sanskrit Library represents one of the most admirable publishing projects now afoot. . . . Anyone who loves the look and feel and heft of books will delight in these elegant little volumes."
                              —New Criterion

                              "Published in the geek-chic format."
                              —BookForum

"Very few collections of Sanskrit deep enough for research are housed anywhere in North America. Now, twenty-five hundred years after the death of Shakyamuni Buddha, the ambitious Clay Sanskrit Library may remedy this state of affairs."
                              —Tricycle

”Now an ambitious new publishing project, the Clay Sanskrit Library brings together leading Sanskrit translators and scholars of Indology from around the world to celebrate in translating the beauty and range of classical Sanskrit literature. . . . Published as smart green hardbacks that are small enough to fit into a jeans pocket, the volumes are meant to satisfy both the scholar and the lay reader. Each volume has a transliteration of the original Sanskrit text on the left-hand page and an English translation on the right, as also a helpful introduction and notes. Alongside definitive translations of the great Indian epics — 30 or so volumes will be devoted to the Maha·bhárat itself — Clay Sanskrit Library makes available to the English-speaking reader many other delights: The earthy verse of Bhartrihari, the pungent satire of Jayanta Bhatta and the roving narratives of Dandin, among others. All these writers belong properly not just to Indian literature, but to world literature.”
                              —LiveMint

”The Clay Sanskrit Library has recently set out to change the scene by making available well-translated dual-language (English and Sanskrit) editions of popular Sanskritic texts for the public.”
                              —Namarupa

”By any measure the Ramáyana of Valmiki is one of the great epic poems of world literature. . . . Now the New York University Press is republishing the translations, without notes and with minimal introductions, in more accessible and less expensive editions, as part of the Clay Sanskrit Library. So far the translators have been eminently successful.”
—The New York Sun [Refers to the nine volumes of the Ramáyana]

The skies darken for the exiles, who have taken refuge in forest hermitages. First one demon, then another, attempts to harm or corrupt them. When these efforts fail, an army of demons is sent, and then a bigger one, but each time Rama again defeats them. Finally Rávana, the supreme lord of the demons, decides to cripple Rama by capturing Sita; he traps her, and carries her off under heavy guard to the island fortress of Lanka. Rama is distraught by grief, and searches everywhere without success.
