A big deception.......2000-08-09

Besides the wonderful prospects I had when I bought the book I was deeply disappointed when I went through its pages. Even though it includes interesting contributions in several point areas, like isotope editting, and spectroscopy of lipids/membranes and nucleic acids, it lacks a significant chapter about proteins!. Yes, even though at least 80% of the biochemists that use routinely FTIR in their experiments analyse proteins, there is not even a minimal introduction about what a FTIR spectrum of proteins does look like (forget about amide bands other than Amide I! ). Only in one chapter there is reference to the analysis of the Amide I band, but just a theoretical analysis. I miss even a simple table including the typical frequencies of the secondary structure elements in proteins! . Fortunately there is an exception to this in the chapter on membrane proteins (something is something?), interesting but scarce for a book like this one and dangerous because membrane proteins often display different features. Also I miss a sort of simple introduction of the technique very helpful with people that have a first contact with the FTIR. In conclusion. I don't think this is THE reference book about biomolecular FTIR, but a sort of compendium of several experimental strategies in the biochemical FTIR field with very little conexion between them, and lack of a general purpose. If you want some general info about FTIR and biomolecules, go to the classical rewievs they are far more complete, clearer and cheaper!

Excellent FTIR Biochemical Applications Book.......2000-01-11

Biochemical Applications of Infrared Spectroscopy, like most other ACOL (Analytical Chemistry by Open Learning) titles, is a good text for those who wish to learn the basics of FTIR as applied to the analysis of proteins, peptides, lipids, biomembranes, carbohydrates, foods, etc. The book contains chapters dedicated to instrumentation, sampling techniques, spectrum interpretation, quantitative analysis and some applications. Each chapter contains a useful set of questions (answers provided) and there are a few suggested experiments. The book is written at about a senior chemistry undergraduate level but would be useful for those wanting to learn the basics. The sections dedicated to the analysis of proteins and peptides, lipids, biomembranes and pharmaceuticals 'outshine' the others. The nice thing about this book is that it is not merely a 'rehash' of somebodys published work crammed into loosely related chapters (like many other books on the subject). A larger bibliography and references would have made the applications sections better.

This really is a wonderful book, directed at the interpretation of quantum mechanics.

Albert's elucidation of the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics is not only the essence of simplicity, but also accurate. A most unusual combination!

Albert then examines the consequences of that formalism for non-locality, the EPR experiment, Bell's inequality, the problem of measurement and the collapse of the wave function in a laid-back but precise presentation. Some other reviews have criticized the prose, but I found the writing to be friendly, modest and (and here's the punchline) understandable.

This is an elegant piece of work.

Cult film? Spare me........2006-12-09

What the Bleep is NOT "cult" film, and I wonder if the person who used that term even knows what it means or watched the movie "What the Bleep Do We Know".

Succinctly, "What the Bleep" is the greatest film ever made. The fact that Albert disagrees with the filmakers detracts from, and does not add to, his credibility.

Anything that finally attempts to unravel the fabric of deceit and brainwashing that western organized religion has propogated onto the populace is a refreshing addition to our culture and should be required viewing for the entire race.

Also, to the reviewer who mocked JZ Knight and Ramtha: JZ and Ramtha are the real thing. The channeling has been put through an endless battery of scientific tests in an attempt to debunk the phenomenon and the results proved just the opposite: what JZ is doing is real and cannot be explained away as hoax. While channelling, Ramtha/JZ's brainwaves are in DELTA WHILE SHE IS CONSCIOUS - which is scientifically impossible for a human being to do. No other human being has ever accomplished this, and the scientists were forced to conclude that Ramtha "is a non-local phenomenon".

Anyone who viewed "What the Bleep" with skepticism or disdain is obviously one of the many who have been brainwashed by western religion to the point of being so closed minded that they cannot even recognize enlightenment and true knowledge when they see it. It is not "occult" - it is TRUTH backed by science and quantum mechanics. Period.

Horrible Writing.......2006-05-06

This book is so horrifically flawed on so many levels. First, there is the erroneous uncritical thinking involved in dealing with the measurement problem, which despite David's attempt to address, is completely evaded via a multi-layered philosophical detours of an almost paramastabatory nature. Second, on a technical writing level, David is completely unable to formulate one complete, coherent, and logically cohesive sentence. His writing style is to riddled with repeated mistakes in basic grammar that it is genuinely embarrassing to read.

I would greatly encourage those interested in real science to read The Fabric of the Cosmos or The Elegant Universe.

Professor David Albert does not promote the occult.......2005-11-16

A previous reviewer expressed her dismay that Professor Albert has appeared in a "cult promotional video" called "What the Bleep Do We Know". I recommend that those concerned or interested by this claim do a search in the Wikipedia for the title of the film, and then search within that page for the phrase "David Albert". Within the paragraph containing his name is a link to an article in the on-line edition of Popular Science Magazine which explains that Prof. Albert does *NOT* and did *NOT* support the views of the filmmakers: the statements he made in his interview for the film were edited and cut such that he appears to support their ideas, when he actually considers them to be nonsense.

I have read this wonderful book by Prof. Albert. I give it four stars instead of five because of the writing style: while said style is occasionally refreshing, it can sometimes be a hindrance to the reader's understanding of the ideas presented by the good professor.

Prof. Albert uses a combination of intuitive and interesting thought experiments, coupled with a conceptual abstraction from the QM math, to engage the reader in a profound exploration of the *consequences* of the quantum reality that seems to encompass the microscopic world (and indeed the universe as a whole).

Beaware: Dr. Albert Appears on Cult Promotional Videos.......2005-09-24

This author appears on the cult promotional video What the Bleep, which was produced by the Ramtha people who believe that a woman is channeling a 35,000 year old cromagnon warrior.

Alberts appears on the film, emphatically waving his hands and talking about physics, which seemed to suggest that somehow our thoughts can influence external reality and its outcome.

How can you trust a man that then appears on such a cult film?

Maybe Alberts was duped and his sayings were taken out of context. But then this speaks of a vainglorious man that was more concerned for getting his image and notions "out there" and seemingly not particular who was doing it or not checking what the film was really about. It would not be surprisig then how such a man can get fooled and have that vanity used against him.

Either way, be careful, as this man seems too zanny to really know what he is talking about and plus his writing style in the book looks like some retarded monkey on crack was sitting in front of the typewritter.

Super Reader.......2007-08-04

Tarzan, back in civilisation, soon has to leave again. The dodgy Rokoff is now again a free man, and continues to give Lord Greystoke problems. This time it is a kidnapping, involving his own flesh and blood, and his wife.

Tarzan must become the ape-man superhero again, but he is not without allies, in the jungle animals, and the native Mugambi, a friend.

"The Beasts of Tarzan" is the third novel about the Lord of the Jungle by Edgar Rice Burroughs. "The Beasts of Tarzan" finds the ape lord settled in civilized London as Lord Greystoke. But he becomes the target of his enemy, Nikolas Rokoff, and his henchman Alexis Paulvitch. The pair abducts Tarzan's Jane and their infant son Jack. Tarzan ends up stranded on a desert island, but with the help of Sheeta the panther and Akut the great ape he makes it back to the mainland. There he meets Mugambi, the giant chief of he Wagambi tribe, a character who goes on to become Tarzan's lifelong friend and ally (a welcome relief after the way virtually all of the natives were just a different sort of jungle animal for Tarzan to torment and kill). This odd group heads off together after the kidnappers into the deep jungle and when Tarzan finds them he lets his inner beast come up with creative ways of making them pay for the mistake of taking his wife and son. If you start reading the Tarzan novels in particular, or the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs in general, in the same order that they were written, then "The Beasts of Tarzan" is pretty much around the time that it becomes clear that the storyline is usually the same. Our hero is separated from the woman he loves and spends most of the book getting her back. You can throw a baby into the mix, change the impediments placed in the way, or alter the locale from Africa to Mars, Pellucidar or the Land That Time Forgot (far and away the best part of the recipe), but the basic plot remains the same. Burroughs was also getting tired of having to write about Tarzan, which he would prove in the next book in the series, "The Son of Tarzan," where baby Jack grows up to become Korak the Killer. Unfortunately there were more than twenty more Tarzan novels to come, which would rely more and more of a formulaic approach.

This is as addictive as previous Tarzan's stories. In this one the archenemy of Tarzan finally gets his desserts. You have to read it!

I like tarzan books. This one was great as well. Tarzan finally got to see some of his enemies die, which was satisfying for me. Also, I enjoyed the "lord of nature" aspect of the book. Anyone that can control a pack of apes and a panther is pretty cool. After I read this book, I just wanted to fight another animal to the death. After I killed it, I would stand above it with the blood running down my throat and scream like tarzan does. I recommend this book for any father who is worried his son might grow up to be weak. Once again, great book.

A classical Tarzan tale.......2000-06-11

Although this is not my favourite of the Tarzan books, it is definitely an excellent story. I just started to read about the adventures of Tarzan and can barely put the books down. Edgar Rice Burrougs is an amazing author. "The Beasts of Tarzan" is no exception.

After Jane and their son Jack are kidnapped, Tarzan has to return to the jungle. Once more he has to rely on his wits and his above-human strength and physique to survive in the jungle. Making several new friend (not all of them human) he has to track down Jane, his son and the men who captured them.

Good adventures for kids today.......2003-05-28

I first read these books a few years ago, when I was twelve. I loved all of the Tarzan series (although Jane and Jack seem to disappear later in the series) but these two novels were my favorites. Although I already owned both books, I bought this version simply because having two of my favorite novels in one volume seemed too good to be true. I re-read these books twice a year. The action keeps coming and never lets up (this from a girl who was quickly bored with The Lord of the Rings).

There is also a sort of poetic irony that Burroughs employs. Tarzan comes from the jungle into civilization, while his son goes from civilization to the jungle. While Tarzan grew up without any sort of guidance or moral direction, he is one of the most chivalrous, honorable, and genuinely good people that I've ever encountered in any book (save the bible.) The implication is that the jungle beasts are sometimes more noble and less cruel (albeit no more gentle) than humans who should know better. Indeed, when Jack and Meriem encounter other apes, baboons, or even people, they insist that they are Great Apes and not human (and are proud of the distinction). This is furthered by the fact that the most unlikely of people (as in the ugly, filthy cook on the ship which holds Jane hostage) sometimes are the most brave and good.

Overall, these two stories are great adventures that hold something deeper for anyone who cares to look.

I have read most of these books and have found them very enjoyable.I am tring to get the whole series again to reread andfor my son's to read as well

The Greystoke Family Saga continues.......2000-05-17

Both of these books follow on the story begun by the 1st 2 in the series. In Beasts, the villainous Rokoff and Petrovich return to destroy Tarzan's family. His son is taken to Africa to be raised by cannibals, Jane is to receive a "fate worse than death and Tarzan is marooned on a jungle island. How Tarzan escapes and foils the schem is a well-told adventure. In Son, young Jack ends up in Africa and runs afoul of apes and slavers. Following in the footsteps of his father, he reverts to a savage stage while battling for the lives of himself and his love.

Tarzan (cont) and Korak - two great adventure tales.......1999-09-18

I read both of these books as a boy, and always remembered how exciting The Son of Tarzan was. I was surprised, rereading The Beasts of Tarzan, at how well it continues the story started by the first two books (Tarzan of the Apes and The Return of Tarzan). If you want adventure, these first four books are, for me, the core of Tarzan. I can't say how they hold up for kids today, but its hard to imagine not liking them. And, saving the best for last, The Son of Tarzan is STILL one of my favorites! It is less well known than the Tarzan legend, and perhaps more exciting as a result.

Completion of the best 4-book series ever.......1998-07-25

In book 3 (The Beasts of Tarzan), the villian, Rokov, kidnaps Tarzan's family and strands him on an island. Of course our hero wins out but the plot is clever, the action terriffic, and the ending satifying. Overall a super ride to follow the first two (excellent) books. In book 4 (The Son of Tarzan), little Jack goes to Africa to return his newfound friend (an ape) to the wild. Jack has a series of great adventures and meets and falls in love with his future wife.

These two books cap the first four in the Tarzan series and all four taken together should make anyone's 'must read' list. 5 stars to all 4.

"The Beasts of Tarzan" is the third pulp fiction novel about the Lord of the Jungle by Edgar Rice Burroughs. "The Beasts of Tarzan" finds the ape lord settled in civilized London as John Clayton, Lord Greystoke. But he becomes the target of his enemy, Nikolas Rokoff and his henchman Alexis Paulvitch. The pair abducts Tarzan's Jane and their infant son Jack. Tarzan ends up stranded on a desert island, but with the help of Sheeta the panther and Akut the great ape he makes it back to the mainland. There he meets Mugambi, the giant chief of he Wagambi tribe, a character who goes on to become Tarzan's lifelong friend and ally (a welcome relief after the way virtually all of the natives were just a different sort of jungle animal for Tarzan to torment and kill). This odd group heads off together after the kidnappers into the deep jungle and when Tarzan finds them he lets his inner beast come up with creative ways of making them pay for the mistake of taking his wife and son.

If you start reading the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs in the order that they were written then "The Beasts of Tarzan" is pretty much around the time that it becomes clear that the storyline is usually the same. In ERB's formula our hero is separated from the woman he loves and spends most of the book getting her back. You can throw a baby into the mix, change the impediments placed in the way, or alter the locale from Africa to Mars, Pellucidar or the Land That Time Forgot (far and away the best part of the recipe), but the basic plot remains the same. Burroughs was also getting tired of having to write about Tarzan, which he would prove in the next book in the series, "The Son of Tarzan," where baby Jack grows up to become Korak the Killer. Unfortunately there were more than twenty more Tarzan novels to come, which would rely more and more on a formulaic approach. However, the chief attraction of this edition as part of the Found in the Attic Series was that includes the artwork of J. Allen St. John from the original edition, which is always a joy to come across.
