Book Description
Molecular ruthenium catalysts, during the last decade, have provided new indispensable synthetic methods that cannot be promoted by other catalysts, and they now constitute an emerging field for the selective preparation of fine chemicals. The major reaction types for carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond formation, most of them with atom economy, are comprehensively discussed by leading experts. The authors highlight the most important discoveries in ruthenium catalysis and propose activation processes, some of them being still controversial. They illustrate the innovation and usefulness in organic synthesis of specific reactions including carbocyclization, cyclopropanation, olefin metathesis, carbonylation, oxidation, transformation of silicon containing substrates, and show novel reactions operating via vinylidene intermediates, radical processes, inert bonds activation as well as catalysis in water. Therefore, the reader will receive a balanced view of this rapidly developing field.
Book Description
A primer on the evolution of particle physics and the search for the fundamental building blocks of matter. The book presents the full current body of understanding of particle physics in way accessible to a reader with some basic principles of physics (energy, momentum, electrical charge). This concise book tells the fascinating story of how 20th century physicists revealed layer upon layer of structure within the atom to reach the basic particles of matter, and then culminates in descriptions of current theories which form the Standard Model and the discovery of the top quark. Includes chapters on cosmology. The book includes many illustrations and photographs, and integrates the stories of the individual scientists throughout. Includes 4 color photographs, and the famous "Particle Chart". The book is a collaboration among eminent physicists (including J.D. Jackson and G. Goldhaber) at LBL, CERN and high school teachers in the Contemporary Physics Education Project to develop a novel book to teach particle physics to students.Book can thus be used as a supplement for courses in advanced high school and physics courses. FROM THE REVIEWS: ¿¿Recommended as a supplementary text for introductory college courses or for advanced high-school courses; science teachers will find it useful for updating their knowledge in an ever-expanding field of physics research.¿ ¿PHYSICS TODAY
Customer Reviews:
Simple. Very simple........2005-02-20
Simple is both good and bad here. I've had a lingering interest in partticle phyics for years and bought this book when the university bookstore was clearing shelves. It is not the first book I've read on this stuff, but perhaps the most comprehensive attempt to cover a large subject. My frustrations came from knowing, on very few occasions, more than the book would tell. Too often fascinating subject matter is shown to you just long enough to pique your curiosity before they switch gears. Thus you are frequently left with an incomplete picture of processes that are, in ways, less complicated that they seem from the text with its lack of clarifying details. With some more thorough explanations this book could be fantastic.
For an overview and a primer this book stil beats the subatmoic snot out of all the other books I've read, and would be the only one I'd recommend to a novice "layperson."
Be careful about where you read this book, though. On a few occasions I was approached by a young lady at a local coffee shop to "what are you reading?" Yeah, particle physics textbooks don't always impress people in the most favorable ways. I still love it though.
Buy this book and learn something new and massively intriguing.
A great introduction to concepts of particle physics.......2003-01-28
I found this book easy to read and fun. Ive gone back to it several times and still enjoy it each time I open the pages.
With only a highschool backround but an interest in science, I would recommend this book for those who are curious about the world around us but dont have the time or the math skills to grind through a deeper introduction.
Information a wannabe physicist can use.......2001-08-08
I wanted a book that would provide me a readable introduction to the world of particle physics. My days at university are a distant memory and I didn't want to wade through reams of notes or a modern text book just so I could satisfy my mild interest in knowing a little more about the subject. The Charm of Strange Quarks was just what I needed. Not only did it provide me with the theory, but also stimulated my interest by giving some historical background. The theory is presented in a simple structured manner, but is also sufficiently challenging to keep me humble in any desire I may have to become an instant particle physicist.
My only two minor irritations: Firstly I did not find the sequence of presenting the theory and the use of Appendices helpful. It made me feel that I was being shown one thing then before I got really familiar with it I would be whisked off to be shown something else and expected to put it all together myself. Secondly I would have liked a couple of new side bar type boxes to be included headed "... and in plain English!" and "This is what it means to you". The side bars and boxes that are included are very interesting and helpful.
I have no idea what a true particle physicist would think of the book, but for me it is exactly what I was looking for and will remain on my bookshelf for further exploration when I feel like taking my brain out for some exercise.

Book Description
The centerpiece of this collection , "The Eternal Husband" (1890) is one of Dostoevsky's most perfect works. Classical in form, it presents his most profound exploration of mimetic rivalry and the duality of human consciousness. Told from the point of view of a rich and idle man who is confronted by a younger rival, the husband of his former, and now deceased, mistress, the story portrays the interchanging hatred and love of the two men.
Along with "The Eternal Husband" is "A Nasty Anecdote" (1862), a satire on the "reform period of Russia," which portrays a high-ranking official who is convinced that "humaneness" will unite all people in a regenerated society. The other three stories, "Bobok" (1873), "The Meek One" (1876) and "The Dream of A Ridiculous Man" (1877), are taken from The Diary of a Writer, which Dostoevsky published between the completion of Demons and The Brothers Karamazov. Together they represent the culmination and final synthesis of Dostoevsky's philosophical ideas.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful. Even better for Dostoevsky-philes.......2005-11-08
This is a fabulous collection. "The Eternal Husband" is quite interesting and features the trademark Doestoevsian psychological interplay (along the lines of that found between _Crime and Punishment_'s Raskolnikov and Porfiry Petrovich, or _The Idiot_'s Rogozhin and Prince Nikolaevich). However, the short stories included are, imho, superior to "The Eternal Husband." "A Nasty Anecdote" is a very funny satire, especially if the reader is privileged to know a bit about post-"emancipation" Russia. "The Meek One" studies the fascinating, yet highly unhealthy relationship between a husband and wife. At the same time, it meditates on the uses of love in much the manner of _King Lear_. "The Dream of a Ridiculous Man" features the sort of Christ figure found in _The Idiot_ or _The Brothers Karamazov_'s Alyosha. Warning: this story may make you cry.
However wonderful the stories, Richard Pevear's introductory essay alone is worth the price of admission-- with a caveat. If you are familiar with most of Dostoevsky's novels, then you will understand and appreciate Pevear's analysis of Dostoevskian philosophy-- the stories in this collection are even arranged in an order that supports Pevear's theories. However, those unfamiliar with Dostoevsky's work will be very lost.
P.S. These stories are enjoyable for everyone, but those familiar with Dostoevsky will appreciate them even more. I would suggest that Dostoevsky first-timers start with _Crime and Punishment_ or _Notes from Underground_.
dostoevsky lite.......2005-06-18
i read "the eternal husband" after henry miller strongly recommended it in his "colossus of maroussi". from dostoevsky's perspective, this is a short, tight novella. there is little wasted verbiage or plot development. this is much different than his longer novels like "brothers karamazov", "the idiot", or "crime and punishment". i, however, don't think it makes it better.
story is about a cuckolded husband (pavlovich) who comes to visit one of his recently deceased wife's former lovers (velchaninov). the mystery is whether the visit is simply to see an old friend, or to avenge his prior humiliation. suspence rises and falls with each different act by pavlovich. deepening the plot is a daughter who may be velchaninov's.
as far as short novels go this one is good, but nowhere near the quality of "old man and the sea", "great gatsby" or "of mice and men"--all great american novels.
dostoevsky is a great and interesting writer. this is not his best work, but is well worth the read.
Considered Dostoevsky's Masterpiece.......2005-04-16
I started reading The Eternal Husband, a taut novella by Dostoevsky, after I read the literary critic James Wood praise it. By all accounts it is his masterpiece. It even as a style of its own, a compression and economy that Doestoevsky isn't known for. Premise: A cuckolded widow visits the lover of his recently deceased wife to torment him. He never lets his betrayer know that he knows or doesn't know about the affair. Much of the torment is rooted in the betrayer's uncertainty. For pyschological drama, if you like this kind of discomfiting intensity, where the main character seems an inch away from descending into complete madness, you might also like The Horned Man by James Lasdun and Contempt by Alberto Moravia.
Creaky English, but Worthwhile.......2005-02-28
This book is a collection of shorter tales by Dostoyevsky, or rather the novella "The Eternal Husband" plus some short stories.
In "A Nasty Anecdote", Ivan Ilyich Pralinsky, during a drunken night out, tries to prove a point by gatecrashing his employee Pseldonymov's wedding party. It turns out to be a nightmare of social embarrassment.
In "The Eternal Husband", Velchaninov is going through a disturbed time. He then meets Pavel Pavlovich Trusotsky with whose wife he had an affair some years ago. Odd events follow in which Velchaninov tries to come to terms with his own past behaviour and with the strangeness of Trusotsky's current behaviour. But which one of them is the odder?
In "Bobok", a drunken writer hears the voices of the dead in a graveyard, their social divisions and obessions carrying on after death. "The Meek One" concerns a pawnbroker who saves a 16 year old girl from an unwanted marriage only for both their futures to be compromised. "The Dream of a Ridiculous Man" is about an imaginary parallel Earth, uncorrupted until the subject of the dream arrives.
I thought that this was an interesting mixture of tales. "A Nasty Anecdote" and "Bobok" are social satires, the rest are more typical Dostoyevsky works, being introspective and analytical. The collection is compromised by the creaky English into which the originals have been translated. Nonetheless worthy of a read.

A Difficult Translation of Masterful Works.......2003-10-23
As a first-time reader of Dostoevsky, I found this translation to be difficult and the introduction to be inadequate. The wording used is often rough and choppy. It seems as if the translators themselves may not be native English speakers, as there is something odd and awkward about the phrasing used, especially in "Bobok" and "The Eternal Husband". I have since found other translations of these stories that are smoother and more understandable. The introduction could have been expanded to include a more detailed explanation of the political climate of the times these stories were written, especially for "A Nasty Anecdote" in which the changing political climate is a major backdrop to the events of the story.

Customer Reviews:
A great overview for those who have never read Dostoevsky before.......2005-07-29
This is an entertaining novella that will give you an idea of Dostoevsky's genius. Like his great works (Crime and Punishment, Brothers K, The Idiot, The Possessed), it has a lot of psychological power and displays his style of writing. It has enough depth to it that you really get into the story and the characters, unlike some of his short stories. However, it does not have all the philosophy present in his longer works. As Dostoevsky is also known for his philosophical and political debates, some may lament the loss of it in The Eternal Husband. However, many newcomers to Dostoevsky find that the philosophy drags and that they get lost in it. For that reason, The Eternal Husband is an easy read and great for people who have never read Dostoevsky before.
Book Description
A beautiful young widow, Evelyn seeks to escape her grief in Egypt`s tombs and temples, but ancient Thebes offers a more effective cure for her loneliness in the form of a photographer working in the Valley of the Kings. Mark quickly discovers her submissive nature, and tries hard to take the place of her sadistic late husband, Richard.Yet Evelyn cannot forget her beloved master, especially after she thinks she sees him in a dark museum, and then again in the desert`s sensual heat. Mark makes cruel efforts to break her bondage to Richard, but the magical flail of power is still very much alive in the land of the pharaohs. When Richard resurrects, like a character from one of his best-selling novels, a reporter appears to cover the story and Evelyn finds herself the center of a pyramid of men all determined to possess her - body and soul.
Customer Reviews:
Actually quite good for a Chimera Book ...........2004-01-28
This is a wonderfull little story of a young woman wanting to escape from her world after the death of her husband in a tragic accident. Set in modern day Egypt, Evelyn manages to quickly tie herself up with a young photographer,Mark, that actually turns out to be a sexual and erotic enigma for her.
The reader quickly learns that maybe her dead husband and his younger brother are not all tender and sweetness as one may have though considering the mourning agony our heroine is trying to escape from. Young Mark manages to understand some of Evelyns hidden desires and he has no problem stepping into Richards shoes or his widow ....
This is not what I would call one of the hottest of erotica books since the sex scenes are somewhat short and subdued .... ther is however a wonderfull little story that keeps the reader interested as our heroine suffers her 'Eternal Bondage' from really one man to another ....
Erotic BDSM excitement with a good story.......2003-03-27
An aspiring Egyptologist, Evelyn Taylor retreats to the sands by the Nile to heal and cleanse her spiritual self after the death of her husband. The ties of passion (and ties of leather) to her husband Richard are too strong for this world, and Evelyn deals with consuming emotions of her past love, and a new mysterious stranger who seems 'bound' and determined to take the place of her [now] not-so-stiff husband. Evelyn's all-consuming visions and mistrust sew easily into the mysterious fabric of Egypt and weave historical tales with hauntings by her lovers, then and now.
For anyone with even a passing interest in Egyptian history, the words and scenes in ETERNAL BONDAGE will delight. The descriptions of the ancient world set in modern times, laced with the graphic telling of the world of the submissive woman and the domineering man, give good counterpoint of different worlds merged.
Scene descriptions take the highest praise, the main character development comes in second... the erotic passages of violence within sexual play are done fairly well within the context of the story---the erotic writing itself borders on the crude, but the subject matter itself is by nature somewhat less than 'soft'. The bondage scenes are framed with the nature of Evelyn's passion, and then journey into the psychological realms for the reader to enjoy. The sex itself ties the intricate, keep-you-guessing plot together, and the reader is left with a mystery to solve between the spankings and tomb touring.
To the true S&M/bondage world enthusiast, this book will deliver erotic excitement with a story line... the title of the book is wonderful and ties together many possibilities of the words 'Eternal Bondage".
From a review written for SENSUAL ROMANCE
An Absorbing Novel with Depth.......2002-11-14
Evelyn Taylor is still distraught one year after her husband's death in a car accident. Traveling the world, she goes to Egypt to lose herself in the ancient tombs. However, she begins to see visions of her deceased husband, and a photographer tries to help her to solve the mystery of her visions.
This quite nice erotic novel by the author of "Thorsday Night" is somewhat similar to her earlier work, except that this novel takes place in Egypt instead of Miami.
Mark O'Brien, an American Photographer working in Egypt, meets Evelyn in a hotel. After dining together, he seduces her, and discovers that she is used to mild D/s. She then begins to see visions of her husband Richard, and the story deepens from there.
I don't want to give too much away, but I will say that this is an absorbing novel with some depth to it. The author has done her homework about ancient Egyptian history and the Valley of the Kings, so this isn't a simplistic story at all.
Plenty of good sex and discipline scenes to keep the story moving, as Evelyn finds herself used by many other of the male characters in the novel. A must read, if you like the supernatural sex type Erotica...
