    Book Description

The aim of this book is to introduce the use of green solvents throughout chemistry and to provide a comprehensive reference for solvents currently applicable in green chemistry. The first section covers solvents in chemical perspective, and the second section is a guide to green solvents. Overall, this volume defines characteristics of green solvents and their current usage, and explores their importance ecologically and economically. It includes a full range of commercial, industrial, and academic green solvents, and discusses solvents in specific commercial and non-commercial practices. Green Solvents for Chemistry differs from other works on solvents in that only solvents for green chemistry are included along with their chemical properties and toxicological issues.

      Book Description

Environmental problems have become increasingly complex. The procedures for investigating these problems cross the traditional boundaries of organic and analytical chemistry, microbiology and biology. Organic Chemicals: An Environmental Perspective brings together the basic issues of chemical analysis, distribution, persistence, and ecotoxicology. The author illustrates each point with specific examples and presents a mechanistic approach to microbial reactions. Extensive cross referencing between chapters provides cohesion and complete coverage of issues tangential to each topic. The new edition has been extensively revised, and contains a new appendix, a new chapter, plus further revised information throughout the book. In fact, it is a completely new book. A major difficulty in environmental science is that much of the background is widely scattered in the specialized chemical, microbiological, and biological literature. The coverage of all these areas in a single volume, the coherence supplied by the cross references, and the extensive references to the original literature makes Organic Chemicals: An Environmental Perspective a unique resource.

        Book Description

Organic pollutants continue to be a major hazard in the environment. Often difficult to measure accurately and to deal with effectively, these compounds feature more and more prominently in courses on environmental toxicology and environmental sciences. This much needed book is a companion to the highly praised Principles of Ecotoxicology. It covers organic pollutants in greater depth and detail than has been covered in a textbook before. The first part covers issues such as: · chemical warfare · metababolism of pollutants in animals and plants · environmental fate, and effects within ecosystems This is followed by discussion of particular pollutants such as: · organochloride insecticides · PCBs · dioxins · organometallic compounds · polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons · anticoagulant rodenticides amongst others. The book concludes with coverage of ecotoxicity testing, biomarkers and bioassays and future prospects for improved assessment of the dangers these compounds pose. It breaks new ground in offering a concise source of information on these compounds at a level suitable for senior undergraduates and postgraduates. Professionals working within the fields of environmental toxicology and environmental science will also find it a valuable reference.

                            Book Description

Supersymmetry or SUSY, one of the most beautiful recent ideas of physics, predicts sparticles existing as superpartners of particles. This book gives a theoretical and phenomenological account of sparticles. Starting from a basic level, it provides a comprehensive, pedagogical and user-friendly treatment of the subject of four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry as well as its observational aspects in high energy physics and cosmology. Part One of the book introduces the requisite formal theory, preceded by a discussion of the naturalness problem. Part Two describes the supersymmetrization of the Standard Model of particle interactions as well as the origin of soft supersymmetry breaking and how it can be mediated from higher energies. Search strategies for sparticles, supersymmetric Higgs bosons, nonminimal scenarios and cosmological implications are some of the other topics covered. Novel features of the book include a dictionary between two-component and four-component spinor notation, a step-by-step derivation of the nonrenormalization theorem, an extended discussion of supersymmetric renormalization group evolution, detailed analyses of minimal and nonminimal models with gravity (including anomaly) mediated and gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking as well as elaborate self-contained presentations of collider signals of sparticles plus supersymmetric Higgs bosons and of supersymmetric cosmology. Appendices list all Feynman rules for the vertices of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to SUSY.......2006-03-07

This book is an authoritative and current introduction to supersymmetry (SUSY). It is well-written with clear and consistent notation. The book assumes familiarity with quantum field theory and the Standard Model. SUSY is developed from the point of view of superfields, which can be somewhat abstract, but is elegant and rigorous. The subject matter is introduced in a systematic and well-organized manner.

MY father and mother, Lord and Lady Yu Keng, and family, together with our suite consisting of the First Secretary, Second Secretary, Naval and Military Attaches, Chancellors, their families, servants, etc., - altogether fifty-five people, - arrived in Shanghai on January 2, 1903, on the S.S. "Annam" from Paris, where for four years my father had been Chinese Minister. Our arrival was anything but pleasant, as the rain came down in torrents, and we had the greatest difficulty getting our numerous retinue landed and safely housed, not to mention the tons of baggage that had to be looked after. We had found from previous experience that none of our Legation people or servants could be depended upon to do anything when travelling, in consequence of which the entire charge devolved upon my mother, who was without doubt the genius of the party in arranging matters and straightening out difficulties. When the launch from the steamer arrived at the jetty off the French Bund, we were met by the Shanghai Taotai (the highest official in the city), the Shanghai Magistrate and numerous other officials, all dressed in their official robes. The Taotai told my father that he had prepared the Tien Ho Gung (Temple of the Queen of Heaven) for us to reside in during our stay in Shanghai, but my father refused the offer, saying that he had telegraphed from Hong Kong and made all arrangements to go to the Hotel des Colonies in the French Concession.

I knew something was wrong when I saw this book bore the statement on the dedication page "contributed by Ed, Tim & Rodney." (Huh?)

The 1st world library is some sort of crank vanity reprint house (I know that sounds confusing), and they have no business producing books. In this case half the charm of the original edition lay in the black and white photographs that accompanied the text, inexplicably omitted here. I didn't bother trying to read this maimed edition -- realizing, after it was too late to return, that the pictures were left out was quite bad enough. I will not waste time trying to read this to learn what else is missing. I have ordered the book from another company.
