Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics
John von Neumann Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0691028931 |
Book Description
Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics was a revolutionary book that caused a sea change in theoretical physics. Here, John von Neumann, one of the leading mathematicians of the twentieth century, shows that great insights in quantum physics can be obtained by exploring the mathematical structure of quantum mechanics. He begins by presenting the theory of Hermitean operators and Hilbert spaces. These provide the framework for transformation theory, which von Neumann regards as the definitive form of quantum mechanics. Using this theory, he attacks with mathematical rigor some of the general problems of quantum theory, such as quantum statistical mechanics as well as measurement processes. Regarded as a tour de force at the time of publication, this book is still indispensable for those interested in the fundamental issues of quantum mechanics.

Hilbert Space Formulation of QM.......2003-04-10
Has Strengths and Weaknesses.......2002-07-30
The weaknesses:
(1) the font is a pain to read; it looks like it came off an old typewriter. I wonder why the publishers couldn't put it into a more modern readable form.
(2) Von Neumann writes this book , in part, with the intention to dispel the mathematical nonsense, as he perceives it, of the Dirac delta function. Therefore he casts everything into the unwieldy formalism required to do without the distribution. Indoubtedly he was trying to change the dirac formalism in use in quantum mechanics at the time but was fortunately unsucessful in persuading physicists to use his alternative language.
Summary: I recommend this book for anyone wishing to deepen his or her understanding of the foundations, conceptual and mathematical of quantum theory.

The Geometric Phase in Quantum Systems: Foundations, Mathematical Concepts, and Applications in Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics (Theoretical and Mathematical Physics)
J. Zwanziger Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
Accessories:
ASIN: 3540000313 |
Book Description
Aimed at graduate physics and chemistry students, this is the first comprehensive monograph covering the concept of the geometric phase in quantum physics from its mathematical foundations to its physical applications and experimental manifestations. It contains all the premises of the adiabatic Berry phase as well as the exact Anandan-Aharonov phase. It discusses quantum systems in a classical time-independent environment (time dependent Hamiltonians) and quantum systems in a changing environment (gauge theory of molecular physics). The mathematical methods used are a combination of differential geometry and the theory of linear operators in Hilbert Space. As a result, the monograph demonstrates how non-trivial gauge theories naturally arise and how the consequences can be experimentally observed. Readers benefit by gaining a deep understanding of the long-ignored gauge theoretic effects of quantum mechanics and how to measure them.

Quantum Mechanics 1: Foundations (Oxford Chemistry Primers, 48)
N. J. B. Green Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0198557612 |
Book Description
Quantum mechanics is of central importance in chemistry. To understand matter and its chemical transformations it is necessary to take a microscopic view connecting experimental observation to the properties of constituent molecules. However, at this microscopic level atoms and sub- atomic particles do not obey the classical laws of mechanics that pertain to the everyday macroscopic world. They obey the laws of quantum mechanics. The aim of this book is to explain the fundamentals of quantum mechanics from the point of view of chemistry; to describe areas of chemistry where quantum mechanics is most important; and to show how quantum mechanics is applied to chemical problems. To this end, the book is divided into two parts: the first deals with the foundations of quantum mechanics (concentrating on exactly soluble problems and the reduction of complicated problems to simple foundations) and the second is a tool kit for applying quantum mechanics to chemical problems (thus concentrating on approximate methods). Although advanced mathematics has been kept to a minimum, the nature of the subject means a certain amount of mathematics is necessary and it is assumed the reader is familiar with a typical first year mathematics course. Quantum Mechanics is an intermediate level text aimed at second and third year undergraduates.

Foundations of Hadronic Chemistry: With Applications to New Clean Energies and Fuels (Fundamental Theories of Physics)
R.M. Santilli Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402000871 |
Book Description
Despite outstanding achievements, Quantum Chemistry has failed to achieve exact representations of molecular data from exact quantum principles. Hadronic Chemistry is a new, nonlinear, nonlocal and nonunitary covering discipline which admits all quantum models as particular cases, while permitting invariant representations of molecular data exact to any desired accuracy. These results are due to a new mathematics necessary for the invariant treatment of nonlinear, nonlocal, and nonunitary theories, known as Santilli isomathematics, and a new structure model of molecules with strongly attractive correlations of valence electron pairs in single couplings, which correlations are nonlinear, nonlocal, and nonunitary, thus outside all the capabilities of Quantum Chemistry. Following a systematic presentation of the basic methods, the new model of molecules, and its experimental verifications, the author applies Hadronic Chemistry to the prediction and experimental verification of a new chemical species, called magnecules, consisting of stable clusters of molecules, dimers, and individual atoms under new non-valence internal bonds. Finally, the author applies all these results to the industrial development of new, clean energies and fuels.

Theories of Molecular Reaction Dynamics: The Microscopic Foundation of Chemical Kinetics (Oxford Graduate Texts)
Niels E. Henriksen , and Flemming Y. Hansen Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0199203865 |
Book Description
This book deals with a central topic at the interface of chemistry and physics - the understanding of how the transformation of matter takes place at the atomic level. Building on the laws of physics, the book focuses on the theoretical framework for predicting the outcome of chemical reactions. The style is highly systematic with attention to basic concepts and clarity of presentation. Molecular reaction dynamics is about the detailed atomic-level description of chemical reactions. Based on quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics or, as an approximation, classical mechanics, the dynamics of uni- and bi-molecular elementary reactions are described. The book features a detailed presentation of transition-state theory which plays an important role in practice, and a comprehensive discussion of basic theories of reaction dynamics in condensed phases. Examples and end-of-chapter problems are included in order to illustrate the theory and its connection to chemical problems.

Conrad's Heart of Darkness: Rebirth of Tragedy
John P. Anderson Manufacturer: Universal Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1581124678 |
Book Description
This is a reader's guide to Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness as art, not as a page-turner but as art. As he has done with other works of Conrad, Anderson traces Conrad's art in a line-by-line analysis of most of this short novel.Anderson traces the unifying theme of the novel to Nietzsche's ideas in The Birth of Tragedy. Nietzsche interpreted ancient Greek tragedy as a reflection of Dionysian and Apollinian life experiencesof the Greek audience. Apollo was a Greek god of the higher orders of civilization and the civilized restraint and control that is necessary for getting along with others. Dionysus, on the other hand, was agod of nature and fertility and is associated with unrestrained, orgiastic worship.
This author shows how Conrad used the contrast between the Apollinian and Dionysian to structure the form and content of the novel: how the contrast holds together the important artistic decisions made by Conrad; how Conrad midwived the rebirth of ancient Greek tragedy as the Congo tragedythe rape of the Congo by Europeans in the late 19th century; and how this could have happenedhow the psyches of the Europeans unraveled in the Congo jungle.
In Conrad's rendition, the unrestrained competitive and hostile Dionysian life forces at the heart of nature not only power the teeming jungle but also lurk in the inherited instincts of mankind. The European search for ivory in the Congo brought these primitive instincts to the surface, out of their holes like serpents with venom of a mixture of desire and hate. The high ground of the novel is an ironyin the Congo clothes do not make the man. The European exploiters dressed in the very proper tropical whites are savage in behavior while naked man-eaters are restrained in behavior.
As with Nietzsche before him, Conrad's approach anticipated central doctrines of Freud and Jung. Conrad's use of Nietzschean elements gives many modern readers a sense of dread or uneasiness, suggesting that the Nietzschean elements jostle important structures in our unconscious.
