        Book Description

This monograph provides an accessible introduction to the theory, and the large-scale simulation methods currently used in radiation hydrodynamics, the study of the dynamics of matter interacting with radiation, when the radiation is strong enough to have a profound effect on the matter. Radiation hydrodynamics applies to normal stars, exploding stars or stars with violent winds, active galaxies, and on Earth wherever matter is very hot. The volume is a valuable text for research scientists and graduate students in physics and astrophysics.

This book began with a series of lectures given for the summer School on Radiactive Transfer and Radiation Hydrodynamics at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Oslo in June, 1999. Those talks focused on the specifics of the dynamic coupling of radiation and matter and on the detailed processes of the interaction.

It is the nature of such lectures that they are more descriptive rather than mathematically inclined. The years since the lectures have been spent in providing a numerical basis for many of the areas that were light in those areas.

Note that radiation as discussed in this book is part of the very high densigy radiation seen in astrophysics in areas like exploding stars. It is not related to the much lower radiation levels seen on Earth or in medical applications. Within it's selected areas of interest it represents the current state of the art in the field.

This work is by far the most outstanding text in the field. It's completeness and attention to detail make it a "must have" for students of radiation hydrodynamics as well as for experts in the field. The republication of this book by Dover has done the field a great service second only to the service provided by the authors in writing it!

I had the fortune of finding this book while I was interested in studying the radiative transfer of polarised radiation. It was really great! I am convinced that this book is a real jewel for anybody interested in radiative transfer. A rare subject like Stokes polarisation is treated with simplicity, great detail and deep understanding of the underlying physics of photon transfer. Some years later I had the privilege of meeting personally the author during one of his visits to the University of Bologna. I treasure the remember of this meeting with such a fascinating mind which had deeply impacted the whole field of radiation diffusion and my own career.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: We present a heuristic algorithm to evaluate alternative item and storage device locations in the Coast Guard's Aircraft Repair and Supply Center (ARSC) warehouse. The goal is to minimize the labor cost of item pickers by locating items in a way that reduces travel. The heuristic assigns items with the highest usage to the storage locations nearest the input/output point and evaluates alternative plans for relocating a limited number of storage devices by pairwise-interchange. We judge the quality of our results by comparing them to ARSC's current item locations and storage device layout. We also develop an iterative linear programming (LP) based algorithm that provides a lower bound on cost for comparison with the heuristic's results. Although implementing the iterative LP solution requires capital outlays beyond current budgets of the ABS C, the solution provides insight into layout and labor cost tradeoffs for long term planning. Our results show that expected travel distances and labor costs can be reduced by 40.2% by reassigning items to locations within ARSC's current configuration of storage devices. By interchanging only 7 of 51 storage devices ARSC could gain an additional 5.6% improvement for a total 45.8% reduction. Our iterative linear programming solution establishes a lower bound of 53.7% reduction over ARSC's current layout.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A913473. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Impulse antennas are specifically designed to transmit and/or receive very short bursts of electromagnetic energy. By their very nature, these short time-duration bursts (impulses) require ultra-wideband transmitting and receiving antennas. This thesis investigates a number of UWB antenna designs to determine their feasibility in receiving an impulse having a 1000:1 bandwidth (10 MHz to 10 GHz) with virtually no distortion. As a tool in aiding the design of such an antenna, this thesis presents original software that was developed to visualize an impulse propagating in the near-field region of the antenna being considered. Such software will significantly reduce the workload and time required for antenna design and provide unique capabilities for heuristic understanding of the physics involved.

                      Book Description

Esau and Jacob is the last of Machado de Assis's four great novels. At one level it is the story of twin brothers in love with the same woman and her inability to choose between them. At another level, it is the story of Brazil itself, caught between the traditional and the modern, and between the monarchical and republican ideals. Instead of a heroic biblical fable, Machado de Assis gives us a story of the petty squabbles, conflicting ambitions, doubts, and insecurities that are part of the human condition.

3 out of 5 stars "Selling my birthright for a mess of pottage".......2001-01-07

In the Book of Genesis, Isaac and Rebekah have two sons, one hairy and red, the other smooth. These are Esau and Jacob, who struggled with each other even in the womb of their mother. Genesis Chapter 25, verse 23, "And the Lord said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger." Later, Esau, the hunter sells his birthright to Jacob, the farmer for a simple meal.

I don't know if my tribal history of well over 3,000 years ago is an apt resource for creating allegories regarding 19th century Brazil, but Machado de Assis gave it a shot anyhow. The entire novel is a rather tedious allegory of Brazilian society at the time. In my opinion, it would have made an excellent short story while a 287 page novel is far too long. The two boys born in 1871 to a wealthy Rio de Janeiro family are alike as two peas in a pod, though their temperaments differ. Their mother, named Natividade ( in case you don't "get it"), represents Brazil, the loving figure who nurtures her twin sons, two contradictory spirits who represent conservative and liberal forces in society. These boys conflict throughout the novel, loving the same frail girl (the future ? the present ?) who never consumates marriage with either. Ah, poor Brazil ! What could the future hold ? The author avoids the question as to which brother is the elder and which the younger by making them identical twins. The novel's title alludes to the Bible story, but the narrative bears only some relation to it. Are petty political chicanery, romantic quarrels, suspicious behavior, and useless arguments based on personal pride or ambition, a mess of pottage ? In fairness, it is a clever idea, but I feel it was over-ambitious and ultimately only partially successful. If you take the novel as a simple story about late 19th century Brazil, it is without much life---a girl who can't choose between two jealous and quarreling brothers, some other plot features found in the author's other works. The style of the novel is the same in the two better known books "Epitaph of a Small Winner" and "Dom Casmurro", with many small chapters with titles that pilot the narrative. There is very little description and much lyrical philosophy, attempted irony and wit. These do not sparkle as in the above mentioned novels. ESAU AND JACOB is not up to the standard of the other two, and will attract only the most dedicated readers; perhaps those who are studying Latin American, Nineteenth Century, or Brazilian Literature. I cannot imagine any average reader undertaking this for pure pleasure in the 21st century, because both style and topic are too far from modern sensibilities. You also need to have a fairly comprehensive understanding of Brazilian society in the last quarter of the 19th century. My final word---J.M. Machado de Assis wrote many better works. Try them.

5 out of 5 stars An appealing retelling of a Genesis story.......2006-11-06

Written for children aged 4-8 years, this story is told in a straight-forward manner in about 25 pages. The illustrations by Diana Mayo are very good. I am delighted to know of this book because children need to learn the foundational stories from the book of Genesis, and this is the first stand-alone rendition of the story of Jacob and Esau that I have seen and liked. The book balances telling details of the various episodes in these brother's lives and giving a succinct overview of their stories. Unfortunately, other books in this series are not equally good.

                                    Book Description

Scoundrel! Deceiver! Trickster! Sound familiar? Those words are often used when the story of Jacob and Esau is told. But who do these words really describe -- Jacob or Esau?

A great character study into the lives of these two brothers. Why is Jacob the one who is listed in God's "Heroes of Faith?"

Have you ever wondered about the events that took place in their lives? Intrigue and deception seem to have beset them. This book will answer many puzzling questions.
