Book Description
Nuclear Transfer Protocols: Cell Reprogramming and Transgenesis is a comprehensive review of nuclear transfer technology in vertebrates, aimed at reprogramming differentiated nuclei and effecting targeted gene transfer. The authors provide readily reproducible techniques for the generation of cloned embryos and animals in a number of key research and commercially important vertebrates. Additional chapters provide alternative cutting-edge methods for nuclear transfer, such as zona-free nuclear transfer. Of immense benefit are descriptions of procedures associated with cloning, such as in vitro maturation of oocytes, activation and culture of cloned embryos, maintenance of pregnancy, and neonatal care of clones.
Nuclear Transfer Protocols: Cell Reprogramming and Transgenesis provides an understanding of the factors involved in nuclear reprogramming, which is imperative for the success of cloning. A section dealing with such cloning-related issues as aging and normality of clones is also included, making this an essential comprehensive handbook for research and commercial laboratories involved in, or intending to work on, nuclear transfer. This book will prove beneficial to molecular biologists, stem cell biologists, clinicians, biotechnologists, students, veterinarians, and animal care technicians involved with reprogramming, nuclear transfer, and transgenesis.

Book Description
A unique approach to quantum field theory, with emphasis on the principles of renormalization Quantum field theory is frequently approached from the perspective of particle physics. This book adopts a more general point of view and includes applications of condensed matter physics. Written by a highly respected writer and researcher, it first develops traditional concepts, including Feynman graphs, before moving on to key topics such as functional integrals, statistical mechanics, and Wilson's renormalization group. The connection between the latter and conventional perturbative renormalization is explained.
Quantum Field Theory is an exceptional textbook for graduate students familiar with advanced quantum mechanics as well as physicists with an interest in theoretical physics. It features:
* Coverage of quantum electrodynamics with practical calculations and a discussion of perturbative renormalization
* A discussion of the Feynman path integrals and a host of current subjects, including the physical approach to renormalization, spontaneous symmetry breaking and superfluidity, and topological excitations
* Nineteen self-contained chapters with exercises, supplemented with graphs and charts
Customer Reviews:
Extremely solid for self-teaching.......2006-04-06
This book is an ideal introduction to quantum field theory for a graduate student. Assuming a strong background in basic quantum mechanics and classical mechanics, Huang develops quantum field in a methodical fashion. In contrast to other popular quantum field theory books (such as Peskin) Huang doesn't leave out important details, especially with regard to the mathematics behind spinor fields. Plus the book is very readable.
A good introduction to the physics behind renormalization.......1999-05-16
A very good introduction to QFT. It starts with a rather classical account of QED, then develops renormalization and applies it mainly to statistical physics. So the text does not cover non-abelian gauge theories, and is not sufficient for readers who learn QFT for particle physics applications. But the exposition of renormalization is really excellent and complete. I liked the exceptional clarity and lucidity of most calculations, and the excellent set of problems. Solving them all extends the book's scope far beyond the table of contents.
Book Description
Starting with a simple quantum theory postulates, this text introduces mathematical techniques that help answer questions important to physical theory. The entire book is devoted to study of a particle moving in a straight line; students develop mathematical techniques by answering questions about the particle. 1981 edition.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent overview of the material.......2007-02-16
This book is excellent. I don't pretend it should be used as a course for either quantum mechanics or functional analysis. It is at a level way above that necessary for quantum mechanics and it does not cover enough material to be a serious textbook for functional analysis.
That said at 15$ it is a great addition to any library. A reader can move through the book and really get an understanding of the topics presented. The books by Reed and Simon are a must for any mathematical physicist but they can sometimes be intimidating. The material presented here is relevant and presented in a very straightforward manner. If you have a background in analysis and wish to learn more about quantum mechanics I would definitely recommend this book. Another possible use is as an additional text in a functional analysis course so students can see direct applications.
Incoherent presentation, and not particularly useful........2006-04-06
I'm certain that most of the people in the target audience of this text are familiar with the excrutiating pain that comes with taking a course from a professor's hastily composed manuscript. It's never any fun to wade through an overly terse presentation that's fraught with awkward definitions, unclear statements of important results, and convoluted proofs. If that's an experience you'd like to avoid, then I'd stay clear of this book.
The book devotes itself to a more rigorous development of the theory of operators as applied to a particle moving in one dimension than is encountered in a textbook on elementary quantum mechanics. It seems that this was intended as a guiding principle for the layout of the material, but those already familiar with quantum mechanics are in a position to handle the physics without the machinery developed in this book, and they would likely benefit more from a text on applications of operator theory to more interesting situations (and texts of that nature are fairly readily available). The book rarely attempts to explain quantum mechanics, and when it does make this attempt the exposition and guiding intuition are so bad that anyone lacking a background in quantum mechanics will gain nothing from the text (the Schrodinger equation doesn't even make an appearance in the entire text).
I have hopes that the book will be able to be used as a reference for some theorems and properties of operators, although this does not look promising either -- since I've purchased the book I've taken courses in both functional analysis and quantum mechanics, and the results in this book did not find a use in either of these.
A Unique and Interesting Book........2003-04-23
The book is about the mathematics of a single particle in 1-D space, the line, written for math people. Yeah, it's 300 pages for a little guy moving in a straight line! Isn't that enough?
It's about mathematical modeling, power, and beauty. Physics background is not required. Maybe no idea is even better! Prof. Schechter has spent much time preparing the contents, so you don't have to look around.
This book could be used as a first course in mathematical physics, or a supplement of mathematical modeling or functional analysis. Prof. Schechter teaches us about translating QM postulates into math. Starts off very simple 1-D case for a particle, and no more. Again, isn't that enough?
I think "encouraging" is the best word to describe his style for this book. A very gentle math teacher. The quality of math is as good as von Neumann or Weyl, and the representation is better. He even tells you what probability really is. (Do you know?)
It's more user-friendly than many other mathematical physics books. And the cover is maybe one of the most beautiful among Dover paperbacks.
Yet another "Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics" -- a very unique one!
I was very lucky to encounter this book which was almost hidden in a pile of books. Attracted by the cover design, so I pulled it out hard. Then found that I was right.
If you are kind-of math guy and interested in QM or modeling as well, check this book out. It's hard to find in bookstores, though.

Book Description
The Dirac Equation is a modern presentation of the relativistic quantum mechanics of electrons intended to make new mathematical results accessible to a wider audience. It treats in some depth the relativistic invariance of a quantum theory, self-adjointness and spectral theory, qualitative features of relativistic bound and scattering states, and the external field problem in quantum electrodynamics, without neglecting the interpretational difficulties and limitations of the theory. A novel feature is the extensive use of supersymmetric quantum mechanics in the discussions of, e.g. the nonrelativistic limit, Fredholm and Witten indices, the relativistic Coulomb problem, particles with anomalous moments, behaviour in the presence of magnetic fields, and soliton theory. The book is aimed at scientists and graduate students interested in quantum mechanics who want to learn about the mathematical foundations, the physical interpretation and important applications of Dirac's electron theory.

Book Description
Market: Mathematicians, researchers, teachers, and graduate students specializing in quantum physics, mathematical physics, and applied mathematics. "I really enjoyed reading this work. It is very well written, by three real experts in the field. It stands quite alone....The translation is remarkably good." John R. Taylor, University of Colorado Based on lectures delivered over the past two decades, this book explains in detail the theory of linear Hilbert-space operators and its uses in quantum physics. The central mathematical tool of this book is the spectral theory of self-adjoint operators, which together with functional analysis and an introduction to the theory of operator sets and algebras, is used in a systematic analysis of the operator aspect of quantum theory. In addition, the theory of Hilbert-space operators is discussed in conjunction with various applications such as Schrodinger operators and scattering theory.
Book Description
"One of the great legacies of the classification of the finite simple groups is the existence of the Monster $\ldots$ Work of Borcherds and Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman led to the notion of a vertex (operator) algebra, which was seen to be the same as the chiral algebras used by physicists in conformal field theory$\ldots$ The connections with physics have proven to be invaluable, and it seems likely that another branch of mathematics whose origins are eerily similar to those of moonshine---that is, elliptic cohomology---will turn out to be very relevant too. --- from the Preface
This volume contains the proceedings of a Joint Summer Research Conference held at Mount Holyoke College in June 1994. As perhaps the first conference proceedings devoted exclusively to the subject known as "Moonshine", this work contains something for many mathematicians and physicists.
Features:
Results concerning the monster simple group and other simple groups.
Connections with elliptic cohomology.
Connections with 2-dimensional conformal field theory.
The role of operads.
Connections with modular functions.
Much of Moonshine, the Monster, and Related Topics features new results not available anywhere else.

Book Description
In the course of lectures, held from summer 1993 up to summer 1994 at the Humboldt University of Berlin (SS 93), the Technical University of Berlin (WS 93/94) and the University of Potsdam (SS 94) the author presents basic operatoralgebraic material which is necessary to establish basic concepts of the algebraic quantum field theory as well as to get essential results in this field. The original ansatz of R. Haag (and others) started with the "working hypothesis" of a net of algebras of local observables. The aim of the lectures is to show that the success of this ansatz is strongly connected with deep results in the theory of operator algebras. Some characteristic mutual relations are described. Key words are "Vacuum representations on the four-dimensional Minkowski space and on the unit sphere, DHR-superselection theory, field algebra", and others. The emphasis is to make the material presented clear and readable without missing depth. The hope is to convince the reader of the beauty and stringency of this theory. While the first part of the book describes vacuum representations on the four-dimensional Minkowski space, the second part deals with the so-called DHR-superselection theory, firstly for the automorphism case and secondly for the general case. The constructions of the field algebra and the symmetry group are included. Finally, vacuum representations on the unit sphere S1 are discussed.

Book Description
Quantum mechanical problems capable of exact solution are traditionally solved in a few instances only (such as the harmonic oscillator and angular momentum) by operator methods, but mainly by means of Schrodinger's wave mechanics. The present volume shows that a large range of one- and three-
dimensional problems, including certain relativistic ones, are solvable by algebraic, representation-independent methods using commutation relations, shift operators, the viral, hyperviral, and Hellman-Feynman theorems. Applications of these operator methods to the calculation of eigenvalues, matrix
elements, and wavefunctions are discussed in detail. This volume provides an outstanding introduction to the use of operator methods in quantum mechanics, and also serves as a reference work on this topic. As such it is an excellent complement to senior and graduate courses in quantum mechanics.
Although primarily a book on applications of operator methods, the presentation is made self-contained by the inclusion of an introductory chapter on the formalism of quantum mechanics. Additional background material supplements the volume at various points in the text. Although there has been much
research on operator methods to solve quantum mechanical problems, until now many of these results have remained scattered throughout the literature. Nonspecialists, as well as graduate and upper division students in physics will find this accessible volume to be essential reading in theoretical
physics.

Book Description
This book traces the history of Jane Austen's family from Elizabethan times. The author writes about the various members of her immediate family--her father, her mother, her brothers, James, George, Edward, Henry, Francis and Charles, and her beloved sister, Cassandra. The book also describes the circle of Warren Hastings, and Jane's aunt Mrs. Leigh Perrot, who left her estate to James's son Edward, but who was nearly convicted of stealing and transported to Botany Bay. Readers are shown the contribution each made to Jane Austen's life and art, and the family inheritance that shaped her. Making considerable use of the Austen Papers, George Holbert Tucker has drawn together less well known pieces of information as well as the more familiar biographical details in his intimate portrayal of the Austen family.
