Book Description
Refecting what a new generation of conservation biologists is doing and thinking, this vital and far ranging second edition explores where conservation biology is heading. It challenges many conventions of conservation biology by exposing certain weaknesses of widely accepted principles. Combining contributions from both the school and the new breed of conservation biologists, this insightful text focuses primarily on topics the are integral to the daily activities of conservation biologists. Several chapters address ecosystem restoration and biotic invasions as well as the the mechanics of population viability analyses, which are now a routine facet of conservation efforts. A case history approach is implemented throughout the book, with the use of practical real-world examples. Furthermore, an in-depth look at quantitative analyses is presented, allowing for models and mathematical analyses to pinpoint limitations in existing data and guide research toward those aspects of biology that are most likely to be critical to the dynamics of a species or an ecosystem.

Book Description
MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry is one of the latest and most fascinating new developments in the analysis of organic compounds. Originally developed for the analysis of biomolecules, it has developed into one of the most powerful techniques for the characterization of synthetic polymers. This book describes the fundamentals of the MALDI process and the technical features of MALDI-TOF instrumentation. It reviews the application of MALDI-TOF for identification, chemical and molar mass analysis of synthetic polymers. With many examples, this monograph examines in detail experimental protocols for the determination of endgroups, the analysis of copolymers and additives, and the coupling of liquid chromatography and MALDI-TOF.

New edition of a successful and comprehensive textbook on the atmospheric processes, numerical methods, and computational techniques required for advanced students and scientists to successfully study air pollution and meteorology. From reviews: ' I highly recommend the Jacobson book for graduate students and professionals engaged in atmospheric modeling. They will find themselves frequently reaching for it as a reference. I certainly do.' Daniel J. Jacob, Atmospheric Environment ' recommended as a text for a rigorous course of study in air pollution meteorology and modeling.' T. Warner, Applied Mechanical Review
Customer Reviews:
A hard book to categorize.......2005-12-23
This is Mr. Jacobson's latest update to his unique text on the mathematical modeling of the atmosphere. I think it would be impossible to fully utilize this book if you have not already mastered college level physics, organic chemistry, calculus, both ordinary and partial differential equations, and numerical analysis and have some knowledge of atmospheric science. There are plenty of computer projects spread throughout this book too, so I guess a further requirement would be familiarity with a programming language, preferably MATLAB. This book basically merges all of these fields together in order to develop numerical models of atmospheric behavior. In fact, it looks like it would be a tough read for anyone who is not a graduate student of both atmospheric science and mathematics. By cross-referencing this book's material with old textbooks I was able to get through chapter 5 OK, but I hit a wall when I got to the material on numerical solutions to partial differential equations in chapter six. My advice for scientists and engineers that need to know more about the atmosphere, meteorology, and the accompanying mathematics so that they can do some modeling but don't have the Ph.D. pedigree necessary to get the most out of this book might want to invest in two other particular volumes:
1. "Meteorology Today : An Introduction to Weather, Climate, and the Environment" by Ahrens. It is well-written and easy to read. Plus, it splits the difference between science-fair style books written for high schoolers and terse texts that read like a Ph.D. thesis. Buy it used without the CD or Infotrak and save yourself some money though!
2. "Meteorology for Scientists and Engineers : A Technical Companion Book to C. Donald Ahrens' Meteorology Today" by Stull. It provides the mathematical equations needed for a higher level of understanding of meteorology. The organization is mapped directly to the Ahrens book, and it contains detailed math and physics that expand upon concepts presented in Ahrens' text, as well as numerous solved problems.
Amazon does not have the table of contents for the latest edition of Jacobson's book, so I show that here:
1 Introduction
2 Atmospheric structure, composition, and thermodynamics
3 The continuity and thermodynamic energy equations
4 The momentum equation in Cartesian & spherical coordinates
5 Vertical-coordinate conversions
6 Numerical solutions to partial differential equations
7 Finite-differencing the equations of atmospheric dynamics
8 Boundary-layer and surface processes
9 Radiative energy transfer
10 Gas-phase species, chemical reactions, and reaction rates
11 Urban, free-tropospheric, and stratospheric chemistry
12 Methods of solving chemical ODE's
13 Particle components, size distributions, and size structures
14 Aerosol emission and nucleation
15 Coagulation
16 Condensation, evaporation, deposition, and sublimation
17 Chemical equilibrium and dissolution processes
18 Cloud thermodynamics and dynamics
19 Irreversible aqueous chemistry
20 Sedimentation, dry deposition, and air-sea exchange
21 Model design, application, and testing

Entries include their opinions on cleanliness, safety, hospitality, party potential, best bet for a bite, the hostel's "gestalt", what to do and see in the area, and especially good bargains. They'll also tell you which hostels provide "extras" like Internet access, kitchen and laundry facilities, bike storage and more.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe great once, but not anymore.......2004-05-04
This book meant well, but we set out for Ireland this last March and found it to be horrendously out of date. We found ourselves lost for three hours in the center of Limerick searching for the hostels listed, only to find out they had all gone out of business. It also calls for bringing your own linens -- all hostels in Ireland now provide a blanket, sheets, and pillow. Pretty much the only linen under your own discretion is a towel. The beginning section is good for learning the base facts behind hostels, but it's still no longer a book to be trusted anymore... At least until a new edition comes out.
Great accomadation guide.......2003-11-06
The second edition continues in the fine tradition of the first.Ireland, like New Zealand and unlike the UK, has a lot of private backpacker hostels as well as the official Youth Hostels. So a seasoned traveler needs a guide like this and not just the YHA handbook.Commercial Web sites on hostels often rave about the huge "free" breckfasts some may offer, but omit to mention a hostel has no self catering kitchen. So you have the added cost of having to eat dinner out. This book is really good on saying what the catering facilities are like.Places like Dublin, Galway and Belfast have a LOT of hostels and picking one that is not a dud or miles from the pubs is important. This guide sifts through all the hostels of the big cities and gives a few hot picks on the best of the bunch. In the above 3 mentioned cities in my experience of staying there, the picks were spot on.
Hostels Ireland.......2000-05-10
Paul Karr has done his homework and he receives an A+ for the information in his Hostels Ireland book. My wife and I spent 7 weeks treking Ireland summer '99 and found his book to be invaluable. The information was clear, concise and accurate. Things change and so do hostels and some hostels he recommended we liked better than others. But we did not stay any where we disliked or felt the information in the book had misled us. Hostel Ireland was our bible and served us well. It was our "Lonely Planet" for where to stay. He did a great job and I'm looking forward to any future editions.
I'll have to write another review when I get back!.......1999-08-22
I leave for Ireland in 10 days for a 2 week stay. This book was invaluable in planning my trip and I'm sure has cut down on the expenses. I was able to read it in one night and quickly scanning the reviews was made simple by clever icons giving each hostel the thumbs up, thumbs done, a cleanliness factor, party index, and general brief review.
Excellent, up-to-date descriptions, ratings are questionable.......1999-07-12
Paul Karr offers a comprehensive, honest, regional survey of the best hostels in Ireland. I had the opportunity to stay in four of them recently and I disagree with the ratings that he presents, espe cially in the section "Paul's Picks". Both the Old School House Hostel in Dun Laoghaire and the Bru Hostel on Inisheer Island were average, uninspired hostels, adequate, but certainly not worthy of special attention. I did, however, stay in 2 other hostels which were rated "thumbs up" and found them to be wonderful - clean, friendly, spacious and fun. They are the Old Mill Hostel in Westport and the Aille River Hostel in Doolin. I would not have had the pleasure of staying in either of these without the help of this book. Thanks, Paul!

The BEST!.......2002-06-30
We were in Ireland for 6 weeks and although there are many other Bed & Breakfasts throughout Ireland, this book lists the best ones. Every Bed & Breakfast from this book turned out to be wonderful!
Taylor's review.......2002-04-05
We used the third edition of The Irish Bed & Breakfast Book during our three week tour of Ireland in 1998. We found that the book, while only listing two or three B&Bs in a city, listed the better establishments. Whenenver we used the book as a guide we were always satisfied with our lodgings. Whenever we did not we were unhappy with the lodgings.
The seven places we visited from the book were always clean, comfortable, served good food and were pleasant to visit.
We will be visiting Ireland again in July 2002 and intend to purchase the fourth edition.
Lacking in content.......2000-09-14
I was very dissappointed in this book as a guide for where to stay on our trip to Ireland. It was a huge waste of money. My husband and I were in Ireland for 2 weeks total. We rented a car and traveled from Dublin south along the coast then westward then north along the west coast. We didn't make any reservations ahead of time anywhere; which turned out to be OK. We referred to this book a couple of times when it came time to find a bed and breakfast but we found that it was very limited. For instance it listed about 4 establishments in Waterford when it turned out there were about 40. We got better use out of the free bed and breakfast guides we got through the Ireland Tourism offices.
The Irish Bed & Breakfast Book: Country and Tourist Homes, F.......2000-06-12
I found the Bed & Breakfast book I received from the Irish Tourist Board to be generally more useful than this book. I referred to it for a reality check but found the AA (the Irish equivalent of the AAA) more informative overall than the book.
The Sullivan Holiday in Ireland.......1999-02-27
This book is authored by a couple of ex-b&b'rs. I t reads like a journal of thier vacation in Ireland. There are only a few b&b's mentioned and it seems like only the ones they visited. Much to my dismay the Sullivan's didn't visit Knock, so apparently it does not exist and neither do the B&B's. The only redeeming thing the book has going for it is that for the B&B's mentioned, it gives first hand directions.

brilliant satire on the Irish society of the twenties.......2000-06-24
Liam O'Flaherty's "A Tourist's Guide to Ireland" is a brilliant satire trying to enlighten the innocent traveller. O'Flaherty (1896-1984) who fought together with the writers Sean O'Faolain and Frank O'Connor for the independence of Ireland depicts the reality of the Irish Free State of 1921 and the frustration following the seperation of this country. Published in 1929, his book which has got a harmless and misleading title, presents a poignant, satirical portrait of the Irish society of these years. O'Flaherty mainly critices four classes of the society: priests, politicians, publicans and peasants. The great power of priests, their role in the parish in which they act like dictators, their greed for money, the omnipotent role of the politicians who behave towards Ireland like suitors to a woman (first they are in love with her and when they possess her they treat her very badly), publicans who rob the tourists anyway and peasants who he asks the tourist to pity and admire at the same time are in the center of his interest. He warns the tourists to be very careful with them and he gives them a lot of advice how to cope with them best. This satirical illustration of a national portrait gallery doesn't prevent the author from dividing tourists in four classes themselves. The first three classes are people who come either for knowledge and pleasure or a rest. The fourth class however consists of tourists who only come for profit and who are robbers and swindlers. O'Flaherty writes in the traditions of the great satirists of the 18th century such as Jonathan Swift. This time however Gulliver doesn't have to travel abroad in order to criticise his own people but stays in his country and uses a "harmless" tourist guide to "enlighten" his readers. The book is definitely a very interesting and amusing read and is very recommendable.
