This book describes what is essentially docking calculations in the context of the Accerlys software. The text is very qualitative and does not provide enough instruction to do any "molecular modeling". It seems to be more guidlines for various software packages sold by Accerlys.

    Book Description

Explore the full productivity of your NMR equipment!

    - How one has to perform NMR experiments?
    - Which experiment conveys the desired information?
    - How do the applied pulse sequences work?
    - How can the desired informations be read off the spectra?
    - Which equipment is needed for special experiments?

The new edition of this highly successful book is expanded by another 50 important NMR experiments dedicated to the latest developments. The expansions mainly concern the fields of chemical applications, of very recent gradient selected experiments now arranged in two chapters (1D and 2D),
and of the basics of solid-state NMR in a completely new chapter.

Again, all experiments from basic pulse determinations to advanced 2D and some 3D techniques have been performed especially for this book. The figures are taken directly from the spectrometer output and the reader can therefore rely
    on the results presented.
Written by leading experts, it is a thorough guide through the maze of modern NMR tools. Being a textbook as well as a reference and work book for the laboratory, this book is a must for every scientist applying NMR as well as for students preparing for their lab courses.

4 out of 5 stars As the title says, your basic NMR spectroscopy catelog........2000-12-09

NMR spectroscopy is a powerful tool for chemists interested in structure, dynamics and function of molecular systems. The success of this technique has lead to a proliferation of experiments yielding a wealth of data about chemical structure ranging from small molecules to not-so-small proteins and beyond. The authors have compiled a core of NMR experiments that will serve a student new to the field or an old-hand who has forgotten the phase-cycle of a particular pulse sequence. The book is sectioned into 14 chapters with the 1st two being introductory ( What is a NMR spectrometer and why is it sitting away from everything else? or If I have radiation dampening do I need to get a mop?). The next 10 chapters take the reader from routine spectroscopy experiments to a variety of 1- and 2- dimensional liquid NMR experiments with and without magnetic field gradients. The last two chapters introduce the reader to some basic 3-dimensional liquid sequences and solids NMR spectroscopy. These two subjects could have been extended but I imagine we will see that in the next volume, 150 to 300 NMR experiments. There are 160 (according to my count) different experiments and measurements discussed and each is organized to familarize the experimenter with the purpose of the experiment, the procedure to perform it, and some expected results for the experiment. The authors have wisely included a readers observation area for each section. This allows the utility of the book to grow as the reader gains experience with each NMR method. This book should be in any NMR laboratory and would be an added help to any course using NMR spectroscopy. I know any undergraduate organic chemistry course should get an attendance boost from experiment 8.15 where the students would determine the alcohol content in polish vodka. (As a student I would have suggested a more hands on approach.) The final upshot is this is an great compendium and should be a staple in any NMR laboratory period.

    5 out of 5 stars a handbook for spectroscopists.......2000-01-22

100 and more basic NMR experiments is an essential book for anyone working in an NMR lab, who occasionally has to do more than a repetitive basic 1D protocol. Braun et. al. cover everything from a brief introduction to a spectrometer, to calibrations and standard tests, right through homo and heteronuclear 1,2, and 3 dimentional nmr.

Each experiment is set out with a schematic of the pulse program, phase cycling, and processing parameters, as well as literature citations and practical examples. It is particularily useful for users of Bruker spectrometers, as a lot of the nomenclature is identical to those of the Bruker instruments.

People who have never done a heteronuclear 2D experiment could get an acceptable spectrum with very little other lterature.

            Book Description

This textbook does away with the classic, unimaginative approach and comes straight to the point with a bare minimum of mathematics—emphasizing the understanding of concepts rather than presenting endless strings of formulae. It nonetheless covers all important aspects of computational chemistry, such as

Throughout the chapters, mathematics are differentiated by necessity for understanding - fundamental formulae, and all the others. All formulae are explained step by step without omission, but the non-vital ones are marked and can be skipped by those who do not relish complex mathematics.

The reader will find the text a lucid and innovative introduction to theoretical and computational chemistry, with food for thought given at the end of each chapter in the shape of several questions that help develop understanding of the concepts.

What the reader will not find in this book are condescending sentences such as, 'From (formula A) and (formula M) it is obvious that (formula Z).'

2 out of 5 stars Too many fundamental errors to be worth considering........2007-06-22

While the stated goal of a treatment of theoretical and computational chemistry without irrelevant mathematical details is admirable, this book falls far short of its ambitious goals.

The thinness of the book, rather than evidence of concise exposition, leaves much to be desired in its selection of what mathematical details are omitted and what is left in. It is far too simplistic to the point of misleading, Even many of the pictures, while certainly colorful, are often banal and unproductive (Figure 4.1 is a prime example of a complete waste of ink).

The book is unfortunately also rife with glaring mistakes. One particular egregious example is the use of the term 'molecular dynamics' wherever 'molecular mechanics' is meant, resulting in incorrect conflation of these concepts. Poor notation which fails to distinguish between states as kets vs. their position-space representations gets the authors into trouble, especially when writing expressions involving gradients, or worse, using kets in their exposition of molecular mechanics! Another fundamental error is the explicit use of a time operator when discussing energy-time uncertainty, which is wrong since energy-time uncertainty does *not* follow from the usual operator commutator relationships such as the one used to demonstrate position-momentum uncertainty (as explained in A. Peres's book and many others).

In conclusion, save your money and get another book. It is too full of errors, frivolous details and misleading 'derivations' to be worth serious attention.

                    Book Description

Advanced Visual Quantum Mechanics is a systematic effort to investigate and to teach quantum mechanics with the aid of computer-generated animations. Although it is self-contained, this book is part of a two-volume set on Visual Quantum Mechanics. The first book appeared in 2000, and earned the European Academic Software Award in 2001 for oustanding innovation in its field. While topics in book one mainly concerned quantum mechanics in one- and two-dimensions, book two sets out to present three-dimensional systems, the hydrogen atom, particles with spin, and relativistic particles. It also contains a basic course on quantum information theory, introducing topics like quantum teleportation, the EPR paradox, and quantum computers. Together the two volumes constitute a complete course in quantum mechanics that places an emphasis on ideas and concepts, with a fair to moderate amount of mathematical rigor. The reader is expected to be familiar with calculus and elementary linear algebra. Any further mathematical concepts will be illustrated in the text. The CD-ROM includes a large number of Quick-Time movies presented in a multimedia-like environment. The movies illustrate and add color to the text, and allow the reader to view time-dependent examples with a level of interactivity. The point-and-click interface is no more difficult than using the internet. This book has a home page (http://vqm.uni-graz.at) that includes more supplementary material, additional animations and visualizations, Mathematica® notebooks, and further information."

                    Book Description

Written in the same spirit and with the same vivid style as The Mechanical Universe: Introduction to Mechanics and Heat, this textbook is aimed at undergraduate students of physics and engineering. Thus the authors go into certain questions more deeply, are more concerned in describing the scientific development and consider more fully the verification, implication and justification of the ideas discussed than in the lower level book. Many more specific examples are given and each chapter ends with a problem set (a teacher’s manual will be available). The mathematical tools are of course more fully developed, as befits a calculus-based course in classical mechanics.

I came across the Mechanical Universe telecourses after my third year of College and really liked them.

One day I discovered this book, and then had to buy its sequel.

They are awesome in their storytelling ability and in the clarity they bring to some very difficult concepts. The depth of content is simply HUGE, from Integration and Differentiation to Thermodynamics and Quantum Mechanics.. I can't wait for the telecourses to come out on DVD.

In the meantime, Annenburg also sells the series on video tape to consumers, and any books by Goodstein and Apostol who contributed to this book are similarly astounding.

Consider this a recommendation for casual reading, I already had my grades for the college courses and developed my fanaticism "after" school was out.

Trust me these are to Physics and Mathematics, what "Cosmos" was to Astronomy.

4 out of 5 stars An clear presentation of mechanics.......1999-09-25

I saw the excellent Mechanical Universe Television series while I was in high school and I recently purchased this book. I've just finished reading this book and am simultaneously doing problems in Schaum 3000 Physics problems. This is a great reader to use as it puts the physics in the historical context and traces the reasoning these great scientists used in inducing their conclusions in the first place. The explanations are mostly very clear. Some of the historical interpretations are questionable but they do not detract from the overall value of the historical approach. This is how all physics should be taught.

From the Holocaust to the destruction of the World Trade Center, evil human acts continue to defy all attempts at explanation. This collection of lectures on evil by prominent scholars, writers, theologians and philosophers resonates powerfully as a guide to these dark forces and will help conceptualize a plan for action against them. Included are contributions by Maya Angelou, M. Scott Peck, Rollo May, Raul Hilberg, Samuel Proctor, and others.
