Book Description
The past few years have witnessed an explosive increase in our collective knowledge of the biology of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Researchers have acquired new understanding of the virus's biochemistry, molecular biology, pathogenesis, genetics, and immunobiology. Resulting therapeutic advances have significantly prolonged the lives of thousands. Yet, the need to develop better therapies is ever more acute and--given the virus's continued spread through the human population--the need for an effective vaccine is urgent.
These goals can be accomplished only through the experienced synthesis of information from the many disciplines participating in HIV research and through the insights of new investigators. This volume is designed to lower the barriers imposed on investigators by the sheer volume of available information--information that often can be found only in far-flung and specialized journals. It provides, in a single resource, an in-depth overview of the diverse areas that constitute HIV research. The result is a broad introduction for students and researchers new to the field as well as an integrated overview for researchers specialized in particular areas of HIV investigation. The volume will also benefit those seeking technical understanding of the virus's biology, including physicians treating HIV-infected patients.
Each chapter is a comprehensive presentation of one area of current AIDS research--including work on the virus life cycle, epidemiology, genetics, protease and reverse transcriptase inhibitors, receptor and co-receptor interactions, therapeutic targets, clinical treatment, immunobiology, and vaccines--written by a leading researcher in that area. The contributors are Jon P. Anderson, Jan Balzarini, Elana Cherry, Thomas J. Coates, Chris Collins, Jon H. Condra, Mark B. Feinberg, Richard B. Gaynor, Matthias Götte, Daria J. Hazuda, Spyros Kalams, Nathaniel R. Landau, Gerald H. Learn, Norman L. Letvin, James I. Mullins, Willscott E. Naugler, David Nickle, Matthew Rain, Allen G. Book Description
Yield losses and reduced crop quality, caused by plant viruses are an increasing problem. Several important plant viruses are, in addition to their sap and vector transmission, also transmitted through seed. Seed transmission of plant pathogens plays an important role for the early outbreak of
disease in a crop, for the survival of inoculum from one crop season to the next, and for its international dispersal. Freedom from seedborne viral infection can be revealed by certain seed health testing methods. This book provides a practical guide to the commonly used detection methods for
seed-transmitted viruses and viroids affecting both tropical and non-tropical crops.

Book Description
AIDS is one of the most pressing medical emergencies of our era. Despite arguments to the contrary, the majority of AIDS researchers have agreed that there is a causal link between HIV infections and AIDS. However, it is now 12 years since the discovery of HIV and we are still a long way from understanding and controlling AIDS. HIV 1 and HIV 2 are guides to studying HIV in the laboratory. HIV 1 describes studies of the virus and infected cells and covers techniques for handling HIV safely, for studying viral entry, replication, and neutralization, and basic immunological techniques. HIV 2 explores the biochemistry and molecular biology of HIV. Methods for cloning and expressing most of the viral proteins are described, plus assays for studying enzyme function in vitro. It also includes a section on recent approaches to drug discovery. HIV research is highly multidisciplinary so a complete compendium of all related methods would have been unreadable. Instead, theses two volumes focus on the specialized techniques which are unique to studies of HIV. The books have been designed so that a novice entering HIV research can find clear instructions about how to perform standard experiments, such as assays for reverse transcriptase or antibodies to HIV. In addition the books include many novel methods which are described in detail for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent guide for beginners.......2000-02-14

Fantastic First Book.......2007-07-27
This book is a great introduction to thermal physics for a physicist, and a fantastic book for chemists who found physical chemistry hand-waving. This books wants you to understand what's going on more than anything. Very self-teachable, that's how I did it. It is on the easy side, and the problems are relatively simple, but if you want an introduction, this is it. Helps with the conceptual understanding better than any other thermodynamics book I've ever read (all physical chemistry books are written by people not able to communicate or don't really understand thermodynamics, just memorize). Stat mechanics in it is a little weak, but still a good introduction.
Good Stuff.......2007-02-20
I have this book for an undergrad Intro to Thermal Physics class. I think it's great. The author takes a mixed approach and varies between thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. I don't find this annoying. It's nice to see how they are interrelated. Schroeder also reveals the depth of thermal physics and the large variety of areas it covers.
It's valid criticism that there are not many examples and the problems can be very challenging. Some answers in the back of the book would be nice. It is not a book that is for the self-teacher, but with a good professor it's very nice. Finally, the price is amazingly low. If only more texbooks were this cheap!

Good.......2007-01-08
I am a physics, math, and biology major; minoring in chemistry. The book is written very well and the concepts are explained very well throughout the book.
comprehensive book.......2006-11-10
I like the book al lot, the writes has an excellent view on how to explain the physics step by step. Of course you will need some basic knowledge of calculus (integrals, differentials). What I dislike about the book is that for some of the problems included to practise your skills you need to estimate some values which makes it difficult to check your answer (when you only get a number to compare it with). This, and the fact that the answers to the problems are not in the book (you probably need to buy some other book for it or so). This makes it impossible to check you answers.
Best book available at this level.......2006-09-06
This is best text on Statistical Mechanics and Thermo available at the advanced undergrad level. None of the other texts at this level can compete: Reif contains eveything but doesn't distinguish between important ideas and unimportant details. Kittel and Kroemer is too terse. Baierlein is too long-winded and idiosyncratic. Schroeder's text strikes just the right level: the big ideas are clearly explained and well-motivated. I like the order of presentation. The math is at the right level, the problems are excellent. There is even some humor. I have only two (minor) complaints: 1) the derivation of the entropy of an ideal gas involves some uncertainty-principle-hand-waving when a straight-forward counting of particle-in-a-box states would have done the job. 2) There is little or no discussion of transport properties: diffusion, thermal conductitivy, viscosity, and the like. If you don't like this book, then you won't like the others on this subject.

The Properties of Gases and Liquids
ASIN: 1860940196 |
Book Description
This book is concerned with the prediction of thermodynamic and transport properties of gases and liquids. The prediction of such properties is essential for the solution of many problems encountered in chemical and process engineering as well as in other areas of science and technology. The book aims to present the best of those modern methods which are capable of practical application. It begins with basic scientific principles and formal results which are subsequently developed into practical methods of prediction. Numerous examples, supported by a suite of computer programmes, illustrate applications of the methods. The book is aimed primarily at the student market (for both undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses) but it will also be useful for those engaged in research and for chemical and process engineering professionals.
Book Description
Graduate-level monograph develops theoretical ideas in a relatively informal manner. Nuclear scattering, nuclear scattering by crystals, scattering by liquids, neutron optics, polarization analysis, much more. Problem examples at chapter ends. Prerequisites are some familiarity with basic concepts of quantum mechanics and solid state physics. Solutions. Bibliography. Appendixes. 1978 edition.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful account of complex theory in simple terms.......1999-10-15
An excellent book for learning the basics of neutron scattering, which in the process teaches much about modern methods of quantum theory applied to condensed matter. Squires provides the simplest and most concise treatment of this material I have ever seen.
Excellent book for learning the basics of neutron scattering.......1998-11-11
This book provides a fairly comprehensive overview of the basic theory of neutron scattering, offering some experimental examples. Much of the mathematical rigor associated with formal scattering theory is dispensed with, making it a good introductory level reference.

An Introduction to Thermal Physics
ASIN: 0521337151 |
Book Description
This textbook is intended for introductory courses in physics, engineering and chemistry at universities, polytechnics and technical colleges. It provides either an elementary treatment of thermal physics, complete in itself, for those who need to carry the subject no further, or a sound foundation for further study in more specialised courses. The author gives a clear and concise account of those basic concepts that provide the foundations for an understanding of the thermal properties of matter. The area covered corresponds very roughly to the traditional topics of heat, kinetic theory, and those properties of matter for which there are elementary explanations in terms of interatomic forces. The book is not concerned with experimental detail but with ideas and concepts, and their quantitative application through simple models. The author provides many problems for which the answers are included. The book should also be useful in teacher training and as a reference book in the libraries of schools where pupils are being prepared for tertiary courses.

Book Description
Presents a comprehensive and rigorous treatment of thermodynamics while retaining an engineering perspective and, in so doing, provides a resource with considerable flexibility for the inclusion of material on thermodynamics. Updated for this Third Edition, it reflects an increased emphasis on environmental issues and a recognition of the steadily growing use of computers in the study of thermodynamics and solution of thermodynamic problems. Contains numerous examples, as well as problems at the end of each chapter that are carefully sequenced to reflect the subject matter.
Customer Reviews:
Good reference book, but a horrible textbook.......2003-10-16
This book is currently used in my Engineering Thermodynamics course, and is due to be phased out in favor of another textbook beginning in 2004. The authors of this text, Dr. Sonntag and Dr. Van Wylen, seem to know their stuff; however, they have not done a good job of writing a textbook that a typical engineering student can learn from.
The entire book is black and white text, with a few mediocre drawings, and a minimal number of worked example problems--some chapters do not have a single example problem. The few example problems that are given are usually solved by skipping most of the critical steps. The authors seem to assume that readers will be doing most of the complex calculations in their heads.
What is most annoying, however, is that for many of the book's end-of-chapter problems, the authors have not shown how to solve them anywhere within the chapter. Once again, the authors may have assumed that only geniuses would be reading their text and that they should be able to derive the necessary equations completely unaided by sample problems, illustrations, or other learning aids.
In short, I feel sorry for any full-time student who is forced to learn thermodynamics from this textbook.
For learning thermodynamics, I think "Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics" by Michael Moran and Howard Shapiro is a much better choice. It has plenty of explanatory graphs and illustrations (in color even), as well as numerous worked examples. Dr. Sonntag and Dr. Van Wylen, are you paying attention?
I give this book 2 stars overall.
As a reference book, I give it 4 stars.
As a book to learn thermodynamics from, I give it 1 star.
The Best of Ternodynamics.......2000-03-30
Is a book wich explain detaily, all the laws on termodynamics, has a very good examples and excercises. Another issue, it works on International systems Units, and is very good because the world is changing for using that units on all the industries, it has conversion factor for English and metrics units. I recommend it as the best book for the begining on Termodynamic studies.
Book Description
The amount of time devoted to thermodynamics in many undergraduate courses has been reduced in recent years as newer subjects crowd the curriculum. One possible solution is to concentrate on a microscopic, statistical approach, and present the laws of thermodynamics as a by-product of
statistical mechanics. However, the macroscopic approach is valid and satisfying in its own right and represents one of the great achievements of classical physics. This introduction to thermodynamics presents both macroscopic and microscopic approaches to the subject. Reidi introduces each area
separately and then examines a number of selected topics from both points of view, presenting the strengths and weaknesses of each. This text thus provides a balanced discussion of thermal physics that will form a useful basis for further studies of the properties of matter, whether from a
thermodynamic or a statistical point of view.

The Essential Phantom of The Opera .......2005-07-22

An Essential for any Phan..........2005-01-31
This is the third translation of Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera that I have purchased, and I don't regret it. Most of us are familiar with the "official" translation - the one that is the tie-in for the musical (and countless other editions). Leonard Wolf gives us a newer and - as he feels - more faithful interpretation of the French text. (Sidenote: In the tie-in translation, the Phantom never refers to himself as the Phantom: only as the Opera Ghost, or O.G. In this version, he is always the more musical Phantom of the Opera.)
If you have not read Phantom yet, you may be a bit distracted by the voluminous footnotes. For the familiar reader however, the footnotes are the main reason to buy this edition. Wolf provides valuable insight into many areas of the text. He points out inconsistencies: Raoul goes from being 21 to 20. He provides commentary on the mythological allusions in the text.
Most valuable, he provides artistic commentary on the book. He shows how Phantom fits into Gothic conventions: the damsel-in-distress being menaced by a sexually threatening outsider, only to be rescued by a non-sexual aristocrat. But it is not quite that simple; Wolf shows that there are only two protagonists in the piece: Christine and Erik. He rightly shows Raoul for the foolish little sap that he is. He thinks that Leroux intended it to be that way, and that Christine has a much stronger bond with Erik than she does Raoul.
On the whole, I wish Wolf had written more. How about interpretive essays on the various adaptations, including the Lloyd Weber musical? He does include a lengthy introduction about the novel and Gaston Leroux himself. This volume is a must-have for any Phantom-enthusiast.
Wonderful resource.......2005-01-27
For fans of Phantom of the Opera the musical/movie, or just fans of literature of this time, I think this is a wonderful choice. This copy includes a lot of historical information that someone who isn't from Paris of the time just wouldn't catch otherwise, as well as a lot of critical analysis from an expert.
So, if you want to understand this book much more, this is a great edition.
EDIT: I've specifically learned that this is also a completely different translation than that which is available in public domain, and it does seem to include some nuances which are NOT in the other versions.
A reasonable choice.......2005-01-10
I picked up this copy of Phantom on a whim while at the bookstore and while I do not regret the decision, this book does have some flaws.
There are numerous typographical errors in the text of an obvious nature which do not detract from the story per se, but do make it less enjoyable to read. The annotations are well placed and informative but can become repetitive as their author harps on the basic characterizations of Raoul and Erik. The illustrations are over inked for the coarseness of the paper and can be somewhat unpleasant to look at.
If you are a casual reader, you may not want this edition. However, if you are more interested in the history of the book and the Opera House it depicts than the text itself, this is a copy worth purchasing.
New edition..........2004-12-17
This is the second printing of Leonard Wolf's "The essential Phantom of the Opera" that was first released back in 1996 (just in time for the releasing of ALW's Phantom movie...cleaver).
Many Phantom "phans" have been waiting for this book to be reprinted...and many have paid good money for 1st editions just last year. I have had a first edition since 1996, but also purchased this copy as there was supposed to be 8+ additional pages of info included (haven't found them yet, though...hummmm....).
This is a very good resource for those who wish to research Erik, The Phantom, in depth and learn more about him...more than merely what ALW gave us in his play (it lacks greatly in my opinion....).
